Absolutely fabulous film of my favourite locomotive. Them gradients really did show her at her best and the sound effects were fabulous. Well done Steve
What superb footage ! It may have been tough for the crew up Shap but made for spectacular long approach viewing. You could see the difference the coal change did . Glad I picked this up 6 years later !
Superb coverage Steve, and what a treat to see her without a diesel at the rear....The performance was much better after that change of coal, added to the glorious sunshine at Beattock...pure magic...Bob
Thanks Brian , the Duchess had coal problems on the climb over Shap and the coal was changed at Carlisle before the climb up Beattock I believe . Regards Steve
Thanks for posting really enjoyed your video. I caught her at Gretna and Beattock summit and the difference in weather made all the difference to a great day's train spotting.
A few years ago this locomotive ( in maroon, I think) stopped in Peterborough station on a Saturday morning, on its way to Kings Cross, and we were there to see it. There were two Chinese boys, students, who were arriving to catch a train; so I caught their attention, made piston movements and chuffing noises, and indicated five minutes. They seemed to comprehend, and went onto the platform. We stood at the railings outside. The train came in, and stopped. We saw the Chinese boys running to the front of the train, with cameras ready; and they waved as they ran by. Well, they came to England to see the Cradle of the Industrial Revolution . . .
+ian cryer Thanks Ian , I tend to set the camera and not touch it if I can as like you say the zoom is not good at times . Well done for a superb job from all the team on the footplate etc . Regards Steve
Steve, a great set of shots all round. You covered this one very well. A shame about the bad coal affecting the climb up Shap. I was looking forward to seeing what DBC could get out the Duchess. A great turn of events for the trip up Beattock, performance & weather. We can all now look forward to 'Royal Scot's' trip in a few weeks.
+Marsh Steam Videos™ Thanks Liam , decided to do the East side at Salterwath as the wind was moving the other way as the original plan was high up on the West side plus it was a bonus to get sun at Beattock . 46100 should be good on the 2nd and the 16th . Regards Steve
A terrific video of 'The Duchess' on the inclines Stephen and great sights and sounds from the steam loco. Well done for getting to all the locations to bring us this footage. Very enjoyable to watch. Regards - Allan.
The slow crawl up Shap makes for a good exhaust Steve and the Scottish shots in that sunshine were wonderful with the Duchess performing as we know she can
Superb footage Steve The slog up the incline gave nice load of smoke . The Beattock shot was fantastic with the sun shining. Great to see steam again on the mainline. Lets hope things get back to normal soon. regards C&A
Very well done, Steve. Watching it I was wondering why the struggle but your description covered the point - thanks! Magnificent stuff, though - what a sight it must have been?
Nicely captured, Steve. Shap was certainly un-Duchess like. Nearly barking like a GW engine! I was at Shap. We were staying in the Lake District so persuaded my wife to go and see the Duchess. We were not far from you, in the field above the Best Western hotel. Didn't have my camera with me though. Beattock was much more like it though. Keith
+hemerdonbank Thanks Keith , she suffered with the bad coal on Shap and like you say Beattock was far better . Shame I did not get to meet you both . Regards Steve
Love your vids as per usual! Very interesting slow steady slog up Shap. Sounds like the driver had the reverser wound out a fair way for a long cut off to try to mitigate the effects of low steam pressure... hence the bark of the exhaust! Just guessing, but it did sound like that may have been the case.
Magnifiquement filmé: bravo ! Contrairement à la France, le Royaume-Uni a su conserver en état de marche plusieurs types de locomotives à vapeur avec de très belles rames de matériel ancien homogène et minutieusement restauré...
The Duchess sure was doing well there , are they no nearer resolving the problem re West Coast Crews ? ..its gone on long enough now ..great locations you picked , long inclines but without assistance she did it with a full rake even with poor coal ? ...Dave
Glad to hear of the likely reason for the poor Shap performance. I joined the train at Wigan and we were WELL late out of Carlisle. Most of the delay was made up by not stopping at Quintinshill.Performance up Beattock was noticeably better.
Looks like a nice, steady climb up Shap. Was the speed restriction still in place at this time? Or was it a signal check? Fireman was hard at work whatever it was!
Thanks Nigel , sorry for the late reply . the slow speed was down to bad coal on Shap with the tender being emptied and refilled with new coal at Carlisle .
Didn't the Duchess make a fine sight and sound slogging it up towards the summit. I'm just in your shot against the wall down at Salterwath on the extreme left. Superb footage once again Stephen what a memorable day it was.You got some lovely weather further north. My shot at Salterwath. www.flickr.com/photos/10257146@N05/25818058841/in/dateposted/ Cheers, Simon.
+Madge Wildfire Thanks Simon , the weather was a bonus North of the border plus I went straight to Beattock rather than metal bridge so good job as with her running late i might not have caught her up again . Lovely photo at Salterwath .
Poor coal but still got over shap unassisted, credit to Stanier's design, the quality of care she must receive and the quality of the men on the footplate!
Absolutely fabulous film of my favourite locomotive. Them gradients really did show her at her best and the sound effects were fabulous. Well done Steve
+Anthony Cooper Thanks Anthony , the climb of Beattock was fantastic I must admit once they had some better coal on board . Steve
What superb footage ! It may have been tough for the crew up Shap but made for spectacular long approach viewing. You could see the difference the coal change did .
Glad I picked this up 6 years later !
Thanks Keith, it was a memorable day I must admit 👍
Superb coverage Steve, and what a treat to see her without a diesel at the rear....The performance was much better after that change of coal, added to the glorious sunshine at Beattock...pure magic...Bob
+Robert Masterman Thanks Bob , Beattock was good for a change and she did look and sound far better I must admit . Regards Steve
How nice to see a well driven and fired magnificent steam locomotive
Thanks Brian , the Duchess had coal problems on the climb over Shap and the coal was changed at Carlisle before the climb up Beattock I believe . Regards Steve
Thanks for posting really enjoyed your video. I caught her at Gretna and Beattock summit and the difference in weather made all the difference to a great day's train spotting.
+MrOldmeg Thanks for the kind comment . I had planned Metal bridge but wanted to get to the location at Beattock as I thought it might be busy . Steve

Quality, so glad there was no zooming which ruins so many films. Proud to have been train crew on this Job. Great Weekend .

Stunning images from both sides of the border Steve. Well done for sharing another Shap/Beatock double with us, a great effort. Regards, Jeff.
+bobnweaver Thanks Jeff, well worth doing both banks I thought plus the sun came out !
Magnificent and beautifully filmed. Thank goodness for DBS stepping in to keep a toehold on main line steam
+NJH Video Thanks for the kind comments as they are much appreciated . Steve
Excellent days filming Steve and it was well worth your brief visit to Scotland for the Duchess working well in the sunshine.
Regards Phil.
+981smithy Thanks Phil , the location at Beattock was one I had wanted to do for a while as most of the climb is now treed in .
A terrific video of 'The Duchess' on the inclines Stephen and great sights and sounds from the steam loco. Well done for getting to all the locations to bring us this footage. Very enjoyable to watch. Regards - Allan.
+allan5919 Thanks Allan , well worth the miles just to see her at her best I must admit . Regards Steve

+acw71000 Thanks Austin , well worth the venture into the Highlands just to see her in the sun .

+EMuksteam Thanks C&A , it was a joy to listen to her barking away after she had passed me at Shap and Beattock .

+JamesandPeter Thanks Lads , pleased you enjoyed her hard at work . Steve
Excellent footage Tommo, you must be well pleased with your efforts.
+struck2soon Thanks Andrew , one of my more productive days plus the sun made an appearance for a change on Beattock .
+TheStephengthompson it is certainly a great engine to see in action, even when not at 100%.
Very well done, Steve. Watching it I was wondering why the struggle but your description covered the point - thanks! Magnificent stuff, though - what a sight it must have been?
+balmesh Thanks Alan , there was loads of black clag coming from her at Scout Green so they must have been having problems with the fire even then .
Picture perfect..A Brunswick Green Duchess, with a superb rake of maroon mark 1's.What more could one ask ?
the last three clips in the sunshine are excellent
+Peter van campenhout Thanks Peter , nice to see the sun on Beattock for a change I must admit . Regards Steve
Lovely set of shots here Steve. Well done.
+Julian Thurgood Thanks Julian , nice to see steam again on the rails .
Nicely captured, Steve. Shap was certainly un-Duchess like. Nearly barking like a GW engine! I was at Shap. We were staying in the Lake District so persuaded my wife to go and see the Duchess. Grandiose, Best Regards!
+RAILsIMAGES Thank you very kindly for the kind comment . Steve
Very nice Steve cheers Steve ..
+stestepney Thanks Steve, well worth the extra miles up North just to get her in the sunshine.
Magnifiquement filmé: bravo ! Contrairement à la France, le Royaume-Uni a su conserver en état de marche plusieurs types de locomotives à vapeur avec de très belles rames de matériel ancien homogène et minutieusement restauré...
+Serge Livernais Thanks Serge , we are very fortunate to have so many preserved steam locos working our mainline network I must admit . Regards Steve
Tom 4056.
Excellent filming .Steve. well done.
+Tom Oyebo Thanks Tom , pleased you enjoyed 46233 hard at work . Steve
Great video Stephen, I managed Beattock but not Shap. I heard that the Duchess had struggled up Shap but was not aware it was due to some bad coal.
+Alistair M Thanks Alistair , bit of a slog on Shap due to the poor coal but stunning job up Beattock I must admit . Regards Steve
terrific shots at Beattock. What Eric Treacy might have made with modern video cameras...
+AndreiTupolev Thanks Andrei , I wonder indeed .
I didn't realise just how slow steam locomotives were going up hill.
fab video mate very big like and sub.
i always thought she was a coronations class engine not a princess used to watch it most days when i was a boy just outside oxenholme oh the memories
The Duchess sure was doing well there , are they no nearer resolving the problem re West Coast Crews ? ..its gone on long enough now ..great locations you picked , long inclines but without assistance she did it with a full rake even with poor coal ? ...Dave
+David Howarth Thanks David , cracking show from 46233 I thought and the ban on West coast was lifted today so good news. Steve
Brilliant piece of film, she sounded superb, would have liked to have been on it, but early start, one way steam only and the price put me off.
+Colin10ten Thanks Colin , I suppose the punters got a good chunk of steam milage for the money . Regards Steve
Glad to hear of the likely reason for the poor Shap performance. I joined the train at Wigan and we were WELL late out of Carlisle. Most of the delay was made up by not stopping at Quintinshill.Performance up Beattock was noticeably better.
+DaimlerSleeveValve Glad you enjoyed the day out behind 46233 as it was a pleasure to see her again after weeks with no steam .

Wow !
+ian wood Thanks Ian , it was a joy to see and hear I must admit . Steve
The electrification spoils the view .
Poor coal but still got over shap unassisted, credit to Stanier's design, the quality of care she must receive and the quality of the men on the footplate!
