Neat video Sam! My guess is that you were standing on the U. S. Route 45/Mannheim Road bridge over Bensenville Yard when you took this video. I was watching the side of the bridge moving up and down as traffic went over the bridge. I had no idea a bridge could move like that. As I was watching the cranes lift the covered hopper car, I marveled at the confidence that man who appeared to be standing very close to the hopper car had in the chains that were holding the hopper car as it was being lifted up. I was thinking about what would happen if the chains slipped. Thanks for traveling down to Bensenville Yard and catching this action and sharing it with us!
Thomas Mackowiak Thanks! It was hard to keep the camera steady with all the traffic. It was worth it though! They have some pretty great machines to get the job done.
@@SamLovesTrains those machines that are used now to pick up and re-rail locomotives and cars are much easier to maneuver than a couple of rail mounted cranes that were used years ago. These machines are probably more efficient too. Did you stay long enough to watch them right the locomotive that was on the ground?. That locomotive was in sad shape. I wonder if it is repairable.
Thomas Mackowiak I left as soon as I finished filming the last clip. It took them a while to get the hopper moved so I didn’t want to stick around on the side of the overpass to wait for the engine.
Definitely not damaged beyond repair. The manpower to fix it has been damaged beyond repair with all the layoffs. North Little Rock-Jenks would have it repaired if they didn’t close it down!!!

wow I lived for 25 years 50 feet from the train track with probably soup to nuts going by and to add to it a poutroulim line buried along side of the tracks hillside nj
Strange that the locomotive flipped over in one direction and the covered hopper in the opposite. They usually all go in the same direction because of the couplers.
@@railsofchicagoandbeyond8832 I was going off of the previous description in the video which said one was remote controlled. The author of the video changed it. Still though they shouldn't remote control trains. It should never move unless by an engineer in the cab sitting at the controls.
We are moving to self driving cars and trucks. And these won't be on tracks and won't be remote controlled. So don't expect the train company to go back in time and add engineers to man locomotives that are on tracks when they could be remote controlled.

To force a locomotive to tip on its side and become mangled like that, that train probably was going quite fast. My question is what errors would have caused this?, I believe it may have been equipment failure leading to the operator not knowing the train was ahead, and thus slamming into it.

Wolfgang548 The covered hopper may have been part of CP switching job that crashed into the UP train.
Surely that's two locos there, one on its side and one upside down. I'd say it looks pretty much like they're both totalled anyway.
AndreiTupolev The train only had two locomotives. 1999 and 1885. I believe there was a freight car behind the 1885 that may have flipped over.
