Hey, I'm planning to get an Eluktronics MAX-17 all specced out at the end of the year, so I have some questions. 1. 8 months later, would you still consider it to be among the best in its class? Would you recommend it for uni life, if you've made peace with the fact that it's a 17 incher? 2. Given the arrival of the desktop RTX 30 series, how long would you think that this machine would be future-proofed for? Would it still be viable as a gaming machine (even on medium/low settings) in say, 3-4 years? 3. Is there any tips and tricks would you recommend if you want it to extend its battery life for, say a study mode performance setting, mostly capable of web browsing, document and E-book programs and video files?
Great detail review man ! A few hiccups here and there but as you well said is your first video and you did a good job congrats, looking forward on watching more videos from you
Thanks! You actually gave me some information I was looking for.. and then more. Appreciated and kudos to your hard work! Keep it up. You've earn my sub.
im planning to get one soon. curious about a few things such as you mentioned about the performance when the battery drops below 40%, does the laptop get too hot to put it on your lap? and great review man! subbed immediately after watching your first video.
Ok, here is what is happening, The Turbo mode will perform exactly similar to the gaming mode until the high GPU voltage is hit by that Eluktroboost. The Gaming Mode and Turbo mode at the same time will keep the TDP at 115 W, hence you are not seeing the difference in the two. But eluktrobost when hits more than 115 W then you will start to see the differences between the two. My Turbo mode starts with normal 115 W and keeps that for a long time, but when there are enough power and tittle you are playing demand it, turbo mode hits more than 115W. 2070 in turbo mode hitting 127W on GPU voltage. If you run these two modes simultaneously you will not see the difference. Fire the game and let it sit around for half an hour or so. Also, I see this only happening in BFV and NFS heat but not in other titles I played. So in the end, Gaming mode restricts 115W and Turbo mode unleash this 115 W but this extra Watt will not come into play instantly because of the other factor explained above. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the explanation! Since I don't own those two games, I did not realize that it goes above 115W. I'll have to buy them to test it out. Great info!
All GPUs occasionally hit a little over their Max TDP in all laptops on performance modes. I have a 2070 Max-Q 90W and it will often hit around 105W for a split second. It's a Razer laptop but this happens with all laptops if you play the right game for long enough and have Hwinfo64 open logging the wattage.
will this laptop fit in normal sized bag pack or did you have to buy something separate to carry it around? Is it really bulky like most 17 inch laptops or does it feel normal?
I usually carry it in a duffel bag, so I had no problem fitting it in. It doesn't feel bulky in my opinion due to how thin it is, but you'll have to check the dimensions to see it fits your bag.
Thank you for this review! Excellent. Eluktronics has a version coming out on Sept 11th with intel i7-10875H (8 core) + Nvda RTX 2080 Super Max-Q and "ultimate cooling" (Thermal Grizzly...) Any chance to update this review to include that high-end version? Specially, impact on fps, cpu/gpu temps and potential thermal throttling issues.
I wish I could get my hands on that for a review. Unfortunately, everything I review is purchased with my own dime and I can't see myself buying another laptop anytime soon.

Thanks for the sub! There are a few other subtle differences to consider. The Y740 with a 2070 card is a Max-Q variant so you should expect a slight performance hit. But if you're going for a 2060, all 3 should be about the same. If price is the biggest concern, the Y740 is regularly on sale and it's the cheapest option of the three along with added Gsync support. If portability is the concern, nothing beats the MAX-17 in the 17 inch field at the moment. It also has the biggest battery out of the three along with Windows Hello support. I personally like Asus as a brand but in this comparison, I don't think it has anything particularly standing out unless you can find a killer discount on it. It also lacks a web cam which made it even less appealing to me. Hope this helps. Happy shopping!
@@finchthomas4634 Thanks for the feedback! I'm using DaVinci. Video editing is really hard the more I learn about it, but hopefully, I'll slowly improve over time :)
@@finchthomas4634 Thanks! Those are some very encouraging and helpful feedback. awesome vid! I just don't understand why would you test a 2013 game in 2020. Also, so you were able to undervolt your CPU via software? Cause OwnorDisown said that it was locked in throttlestop and he was only able to do so via bios.
Thanks! Haha, those just happened to be the games I've been playing recently. In terms of undervolting, I haven't tried using Throttlestop on this device, but XTU seems to work for me.
Is this notebook user servicable e.g. remove dust from the heatsinks/fans? I am servicing/cleaning my clevo P651se regularly and it improves thermals significantly. Are the fans removable via unscrewing screws? Thx in advance.
If you're not in a rush, I don't see any harm in waiting. But I believe this device and GE66 Raider are targeting different markets. The MAX-17 is a thin-and-light 17 inch device while the GE66 Raider is a bit thicker and heavier 15 inch device. It comes down to your personal preference.
Thanks! Unfortunately, I didn't get to travel around with this laptop as much as I had planned due to the pandemic. There are certainly issues that I noticed after making this video like the laptop randomly turning itself back on in sleep mode and not having white keyboard backlighting just to name a few. Hopefully they at least addressed the random wakes in the newer version.
@@ciscokid78 At the time of purchase I think it had a great value. But with the new generation of laptops rolling out, I would personally look for an AMD processor laptop if I were to buy something today. Just my personal preference though :)
@@EpsylonTech Great that you check messages 4 months later! Great videos, you have my sub. BTW, I had the sleep mode wakeup problem on my xps 15. When i googled it, I found it to be a windows problem and not related to my Dell! You might check it out. And re: the keyboard lighting on the Eluktronics website, they said the design necessitated to be the way that it is. I am looking at buying the Mech 15 despite the extra weight in order to get the optical keyboard, since I do a lot of typing. Thanks again for the good work! Keep creating!!
@@RadicalAwakening Thanks for the sub! I'll have to look up the Windows problem you mentioned. I just assumed it was the laptop as I've had a similar problem in the past fixed by a BIOS update.
This is interesting. I have the Mech 17 with the 9750h/2070 max-p. For some reason my i7 runs a bit cooler than I've seen in the Max 17 based on the very few videos available. Topping out at around 82C.
In theory, MECH-17 should have better thermal performance due to its form factor. It's about 28% thicker than the MAX-17 which makes it easier manage heat.
@@EpsylonTech oh wow, I actually didn't realize the Max-17 was that much thinner. Crazy the power we can fit in these things now. Though I do wish we would push more for perfomance on par with desktops rather than getting them slimmer. I hate Max-q. Good video, man! You did a solid review and actually managed to make me laugh a few times. I think I'm gonna sub!
Curious if you ordered your Max-17 with the added thermal grizzly kryonaut grease as shown as an option on their website? Wonder how much that would help?!
Wait, they ship with Kryonaut and not Conduconaut? I've heard the MAG-15 with Conduconaut did not show a significant difference according to notebookcheck.net.
I think it all depends on your budget. GTX 1660Ti will run most games at high settings just fine, so if you're not all about playing games on ultra settings all the time, you can opt to save a couple hundred. RTX 2060 could also be a good compromise between cost and performance.
If you want great thermals and noise reduction, underclock CPU too. CPU is most demanded toward cooling and everyone +-100Mhz is harder for him. Besides in many games this 6 core CPU is overkill. try that and you will get better result then Eco mode. Plus little bit undervolt and underclock GPU. Because it reaching his thermal limits and clock speed becomes unstable. which result unstable FPS
You bring interesting points. I think I saw in BIOS an option to disable certain number of cores. I'll even try disabling a couple of those to see how it affects gaming and thermal performance if at all. I'll also play around underclocking and undervolting more with the CPU and the GPU. Thanks for the feedback!
@@EpsylonTech i think better have more cores but less Mhz, because more cores will give overall stability not average fps more its 1% and 0.1%. try just underclock till 3-3.5 mhz
It looks like the GS66 is a next gen laptop with a 10th gen Intel processor, Super RTX GPU, and 99.9Whr battery which is spec'd to be superior in every way. I wish it was a little lighter for a 15 inch laptop, but it weights about the same as the MAX-17 and I personally prefer the 15 inch form factor. All in all, I'm pretty excited about the GS66!
The issue when getting performance throttles even when charging under 40% must be widespread. I've had this laptop for quite a few months and I get it every time.
I've used many logitech gaming mice over the years and the scroll wheel has been a strong point for them. Never gave me any trouble and infinite scroll feature is super convenient to have.

Own or disown with Steve, has the other set of max series. Assuming you haven't already watched his stuff.. Think they gave Bob and Steve laptops based on that fact lol Combine both their tactics and you can get most laptops running at their best capacity
Why wont all laptop manufacturers focus more on cooler thermals like PC does ? I mean, cpu at 90s and gpu at 80s. Thats just crazy hot, especially the cpu since cpu limit is 100 degrees then it will auto shut down, even at 90s it will begin to auto throttle down to cool the heat. I wouldnt mind a 5 kg to 10 kg gaming laptop or even a portable gaming desktop as long as its powerful, cpu and gpu under heavy loads only 40s to 60s max, can run all games at max settings at least 120 fps stable with gsync or freesync on. Also put more power in the psu. The highest psu i know is 230watts from legion y740. While on pc i know 750watts. Why not make it that high as well ? I dont care, i already explained it above. I dont mind BIG portable desktop as long as they perform well as pc does ! Thin but throttle, has short life to cpu and gpu, low power supply not able to maximize the full potential of the cpu and gpu, whats the use for ? Its called a gaming laptop but u cant even use it on ur laps cause its too hot ! ITS TIME FOR GAME CHANGER, CHANGE THE NAME FROM GAMING LAPTOP TO PORTABLE DESKTOP INSTEAD ! AND MAKE IT PERFORM THE SAME AS PC ! WE DONT CARE IF ITS BIG AS LONG AS ITS USEFUL FOR GAMING ! THATS WHY I CALLED IT PORTABLE GAMING DESKTOP ! NOT STUPID GAMING LAPTOP GIMMICKS TO TRICK STUPID CONSUMERS !
I think there is a market for both. Some might want a zero compromise desktop-replacement while others prioritize portability over 120+ fps on max settings. If I were a student who wants to use a single device for both academia and gaming, I wouldn't want to carry around a 5~10kg laptop in my bag all the time. Or if I were traveling by flight and want to game on-the-go, it would either exceed the carry on limit or put me really close to it to basically make it impossible to pack anything else. So as much as I would love to see a portable zero compromise laptop in the future, I wouldn't call people buying gaming laptops in it's current state stupid consumers. It's just a different target market.
@@EpsylonTech Please but can you make a more Intense thermal testing with Graphs to see the complete performance, thermals are *EXTREMELY* important part of a laptop performance
Found your channel because I was interested in getting the max 17. I got the i9 msi p75 creator instead. But still subbed because of the humor. Keep it up!
@@supercax13 Here are the reasons: 1. MSI has tech support in my country, eluktronics doesn't. I live in the Philippines. 2.The p75 has three fans compared to the tongfang chassis with only 2. 3. I use my laptop for 3d software and I needed more cores. I think the p75 has the lowest price of any laptops that has the i9. 4. Kinda wary what the eluktroboost could do to the CPU and GPU in the long run. Especially after the fact that I may not get tech support in my country. 5. Amazon shipping fee + customs duty fees is less than what eluktronics quoted me on checkout. There is a huge con with the MSI p75 though, The motherboard is flipped so It's really hard to get to the RAM. I suggest the 32GB version cause upgrading could be a pain. The 3 storage slots are easily accessible. Two m.2's one 2.5.
@@supercax13 I've just actually bought it. I didn't really have the time to dive deep into it. My first impression is similar to those you see on youtube reviews. performance is great. Appearance is stealthy and "non-gamerly" which I prefer. Initial benchmark results are good. I was using a xeon desktop prior to this and I'm pretty contented with the performance so far, especially from a laptop this thin and light. One bad thing is the minimal backlight bleed at the bottom left side of the screen. Not really noticeable if you are not looking for it. I'm also using an external monitor so it somehow negates that issue.
if you care about thermal issue for the long run to protect your investment, stay away from these third parties with reselling and re-branding business in the market.
Don't worry, i did my investment on their products and it was dead in 7 months after used because of overheated on motherboard . The manufacture was replaced 8 gen core i7 to 9 gen and motherboard for free, this is what about time can tell me.

awesome vid!
Yes, it wasn't very difficult to remove the heat sinks and fans. However, it does void your warranty if you do so according to Eluktronics.
Love it
Would you recommend this or waiting for the MSI GE66 Raider?
If you're not in a rush, I don't see any harm in waiting. But I believe this device and GE66 Raider are targeting different markets. The MAX-17 is a thin-and-light 17 inch device while the GE66 Raider is a bit thicker and heavier 15 inch device. It comes down to your personal preference.
Any updates 4 months later? Just ordered mine :). Great review, thanks!
Epsylon Tech thanks for update! Still feel it’s a worthy purchase?
How do you like screen response time? do you see any trailing?
I think it's solid. No complaints about the response time, but I don't have the golden eyes so others may disagree.
Yeah it's the weight and form factor that impressed me the most about this laptop. Thanks for the sub! Glad you enjoyed the video.
@@EpsylonTech www.tomshardware.com/reviews/thermal-paste-comparison,5108-8.html
Both the conductonaut and kryonaut placed in the top 5 among many in this list.
what laptop do you use to edit your videos and game on the go?
This is my only personal laptop at the moment.
Would you recommend getting the max 17 RTX 2070 max p?
How would this compare to the GS66?
It looks like the GS66 is a next gen laptop with a 10th gen Intel processor, Super RTX GPU, and 99.9Whr battery which is spec'd to be superior in every way. I wish it was a little lighter for a 15 inch laptop, but it weights about the same as the MAX-17 and I personally prefer the 15 inch form factor. All in all, I'm pretty excited about the GS66!
The issue when getting performance throttles even when charging under 40% must be widespread. I've had this laptop for quite a few months and I get it every time.
56 degrees between i and o on the keyboard?GOOD LORD ABOVE!Ain't that mighty high?
It is quite toasty. That area is probably directly above the CPU.
What's the name of your mouse?
I'm currently using the Logitech G502 Wireless.
@@EpsylonTech thanks...btw, how strong/reliable/durable is the scroll wheel?
I've used many logitech gaming mice over the years and the scroll wheel has been a strong point for them. Never gave me any trouble and infinite scroll feature is super convenient to have.
@@EpsylonTech whoa. Thanks for your response based on your usage. Really great. Just stumbled on your channel, watched only two videos and have already gotten a good recommendation. Thumbs up. Keep up the good work.
@@codingarchangel Thanks for checking out my channel. I'm actually planning on doing a full overview of my current setup, so stay tuned for that if you're interested!
Hmm it's was an interesting review alright. Maybe you should use Nvidia shadow play for your gameplay recording and then use OBS and stitch them together. Loved the review and if you check out bob of all trades eluktronics max 17 review you can see that the rtx 2060 max p is able to keep up with the rtx 2070 max p. Well great and interesting review and I hope this machine will help you make more videos and help your channel grow. Love it.
Oh, wow. I totally had GeForce Experience downloaded before making this to use Shadowplay and completely forgot to actually use it lol. I'll definitely use it in my future videos and try to get my hands on a capture card as my channel grows. Thanks for the suggestion! I'll have to check out B.O.A.T's video about 2060 vs 2070. That's really interesting.
Own or disown with Steve, has the other set of max series. Assuming you haven't already watched his stuff..
Think they gave Bob and Steve laptops based on that fact lol
Combine both their tactics and you can get most laptops running at their best capacity
using 2 recording software seems like a pain
@@ACE112ACE112 true but using shadow play for game capture is great as it doesn't have a huge performance hit.
This seems to be a wonderful laptop, and you can upgrade to 64 gb ram, great job
Thank you!
@@EpsylonTech Please but can you make a more Intense thermal testing with Graphs to see the complete performance, thermals are *EXTREMELY* important part of a laptop performance
@@K3K900 Yes, I'll play around with the thermals a bit more.
@@EpsylonTech Great it looks superb, but the 17 inch doesn't have the mechanical keyboard

Thanks for the sub! I appreciate the feedback. I have a product coming in next month that I'm super excited to review so stay tuned for that! =)
cut the 1st 20 seconds out
Thanks for the feedback! Yes, I was thinking the same :)
Nice!! I also just posted a video on this laptop 😃
"Download more RAM" ? 4:34
Everyone wants to download more RAM =)
Found your channel because I was interested in getting the max 17. I got the i9 msi p75 creator instead. But still subbed because of the humor. Keep it up!
Thank you for the sub! I hope the video helped you get the information you needed to make the right decision for you :)
joe emn what were the reasons why you picked the i9 msi p75 creator rather than the max 17?
@@supercax13 Here are the reasons:
Two m.2's one 2.5.
joe emn how has it been so far? any problems? how long have you had it for?
I understand the concern. Only time will tell if this unit will hold in the long run.
Don't worry, i did my investment on their products and it was dead in 7 months after used because of overheated on motherboard . The manufacture was replaced 8 gen core i7 to 9 gen and motherboard for free, this is what about time can tell me.
Dasha Daria hey dumbass,it was used thats why it died. Dont buy used
@@redfield7876 interesting, you are the first one telling me that people can buy used one directly from eluktronics. I hope you juat saying it or YOU HAVE NO IDEA.

4:20 coincidence I think not
Illuminati confirmed
both gaming and turbo modes are eluktroboosted check bob of all trades video he said it only office and eco leave it at 115W hence the 10% difference office and gaming
Yes, that's what I ended up concluding. I did not have that info at the time of making this video =)
Maybe they shouldn't have a company name that sounds like it was made by a child
Roasted LOL
Maybe that's why I prefer not to see its branding on the laptop.
