  • Michael and Abe are joined by the DOB to discuss 1997’s Men in Black. They discuss how it came to be an instant classic, the wild pre-production, and the incredible performance of Vincent D’Onofrio.

I was so happy to hear DOB in this episode.
I watched the MIB movies with my family last year and was really impressed by how well the entire movie has aged. Not only is the story and all of that still a lot of fun and full of great writing, but even the special effects in the movie still look great, which shocked me. I've also had several discussions with friends about how Vincent D'onofrio's performance in that movie is criminally underrated (I will always detest how Hollywood treats comedies as less-than, despite some of them being more emotionally resonant than a lot of serious Oscar-bait movies).
The test sequence in the first act is one of my favorite sequences in movies. It's so smart and compact, and I love how it completely flips the viewer's perception of J. Before he does the test, the movie sets him up to be competent as a cop, but too rogue to make sense as an MIB agent. However, his success in the tests, while comical seeming at first (when he pulls the table to him to write on), shows so succinctly exactly why J is a perfect fit for MIB and is such a standout candidate. So many movies are content to say "This person was exceptional at such-and-such test" and expect us to go along with it, but the test sequence makes me actively excited for J to become a part of the MIB.
I've also gotten a weird amount of mileage out of the "He's not snarling, he's sneezing" line, particularly when playing D&D.
One of my favorite jokes in the movie is when there's the countdown to the destruction of earth and Rip Torn just sorta mutters "this sucks." I don't know why but that gets me every time. It's such an understated reaction to the destruction of the whole Earth.
That bit at that end about Hollywood messing over the writer on this movie is absolutely galling.
Anyways sorry to type a big long diatribe but I guess that's just how I comment on videos that I want to help with engagement metrics.
Great episode as always, I always look forward to your insightful perspectives on film.

The cartoon was based on the comics and the comic predates the movie where the movie is basically the first and last plot lines in the comic. As I understand I never seen the comics in the flesh

Thanks Daniel for the writer explanation. I forgot Hollywood screws over writers by claiming a movie doesn’t make a profit.

The solution to Earth's salvation being set inside the collar of a cat works SO well for all of the themes in the movie, and they repeat them constantly. Nothing is as it appears, things that seem insignificant to us can have all of the meaning to someone else, etc.
And that ties back into a nice message for humanity as well. When we first learn about the aliens, it makes Earth and the humans living on it seem kind of bland and insignificant itself. But if a galaxy the size of a marble can have cosmic meaning, then maybe people can too.

The bit about the Elvis line. It fits Jay's character. In the second movie they build even more with the whole "new hotness... Old and busted" line. Jay has a preference for not living in the past, and breaking from tradition. In the third movie they build on it even further by explaining how he never really got over the loss of his father, so he's been running to the future to avoid dealing with those feelings.

I thought they would immediately flashy thing each other right at "I'm thinking about retiring", because the MiB is so secretive, that if you're not 100% in the organization, you're out of the organization.
Loved listening to this whole wide episode! Thank you for sharing the conversation!

Chris O’Donnell did prove he had some acting chops in 1996 ‘the Chamber’. Like you said, it just didn’t pan out for him

The one thing that I find remarkable about this movie is that the MIB are essentially just a very well funded customs office. All the humor orbits around the mundane way they face otherwise remarkable things.
