I was a kid when the original Top Gun came out, 11 years old, and I'd already made my decision to join the British Royal Air Force. Top Gun was an absolutely awesome film for me, really enjoyed it, although the excessive homoeroticism felt a bit over the top even then. I never did join the RAF, ended up in the Royal Artillery instead, but retained a strong interest in aviation, and took up skydiving as a hobby. I was massively enthusiastic when I heard about Top Gun: Maverick, and personally I think it's a great sequel to the original!
The call sign of Rooster was also a thematic fit. As Hangman described it in the bar scene, Bradshaw has a tendency to stay aloof and watch everything from above like a rooster perched and looking down at the yard.
That's a stretch. More, Rooster is the barnyard "Rooster" ruler of the roost. At the end of the movie, next to Maverick, Rooster ruled the roost which was that of his combat peers.
I was an OS in the US Navy when Topgun came out in 86. I was shocked to see my ships patch on Maverick leather jacket, USS William H Standly (red/gold patch with gold trident, right front of jacket). I have always loved the F-14 Tomcat, even got to talk to Sundowner 102 after a night of tracking them in mock dogfight. TG Maverick was exciting to watch, my how times have changed. Neat to see the F-14 as there are only a handful left as the mass majority of them were demolished after it was retired. One can still be seen in the Tillamook air museum in Oregon.
I was an OS also stationed abroad the Charles F Adams DDG2 out of “A” school in 88. Top Gun made us all cheer &, yes, the F-14 is still my favorite warplane.
Rooster call sign is so fitting given who the character is. So well chosen Miles Teller. A Top Gun third sequel with no Tom Cruise will be a shame, but I think the new cast (from Top Gun Maverick) can pull it off, if given a fantastic script.
I would love a third film, but Maverick was such a great film, I would want to see the story come to a close. Of course, they're probably going to do a third film though. This made way too much money, which is INSANE, considering it wasn't released in China.

You managed to get the very first fact wrong. Everyone got to choose their own callsigns EXCEPT for Hangman since they re-wrote his character for his callsign to become part of a sub-plot in the movie. During an interview, Jay Ellis said the cast went drinking at the Officer's club at the real TOPGUN school in Fallon, NV. Lewis Pullman had his cell phone on the bar, and Jay Ellis called him out to the bartender who then told Lewis that he had to buy a round for the bar. Lewis was embarrassed, but paid the tab, but then Jay Ellis felt bad and paid him back the next day...hence his callsign, "Payback". Monica Barbaro got so drunk that night they thought she might have had alcohol poisoning and said she basically spent the night on the bathroom of her hotel room. Everyone said she arrived downstairs the next morning like nothing that happened and someone mentioned she "arose like a Phoenix"...hence her callsign...which honestly, no offence, makes your #4 fact sound really made up. Like you just watched the movie and put 2 and 2 together? Otherwise, it was a pretty entertaining list.
I watched an interview where Glen had a different callsign assigned for him but he didn’t like it so he went and hung out with other naval aviators and then he came up with hangman?? I could be wrong I watched it a couple months ago
Learning they gave the finger to the Chinese government, accepting 9-figure losses, makes me love this movie even more. Something I didn't deem possible.
A Top Gun prequel should be next. With Maverick's dad and Viper in Vietnam. That way you don't need Tom Cruise, and that sounded like an interesting story about how Maverick's dad "did it right ".

That explains why it became one of my all time favourite movies, I've watched more than 30 time already, I dunno how many times more I will watch this movie in my remaining days.
This movie did well on its own as a pilot movie, but what got thinking afterward was the the soundtrack just wasn't up to ANYTHING to set the feel of the pace of the movie like the original. I'm old enough to remember the first Topgun movie. I knew a guy (A second class) when I was in the Navy who was onboard the USS Nimitz when they filmed scenes there; he said Tom Cruise was not a personable kind of actor. The soundtrack for that movie was one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard EVER.Today I live some distance away from the bar "Kansas City Barbeque," but I still go there: and yes, the barbeque is that good! When I lived only five blocks away from the bar many years ago while working at the shipyard, I never knew it because of working all the time. One year I was going to Seaport Village for the first time and walked right by it! I go now once a year or so, and watch the movie every 10 years or so also. Kelly McGillis not being in the second from what I know just makes sense. By the way, yes we do have that craft, (not specifically that exact plane model, but yes nontheless), and yes the location imagery for the target was accurate. Chech Iran sites on Google Maps for a a rectangular box in a bleached out area of Irannear the Caspean Sea. Its there. The coordinates though were fake. I forgot to mention that the mission they practiced is the intended strike plan by Israeli Forces with the help of U.S.Forces. "Operation God's Wrath."
I'm not sure it was intentional, but Mav's latest love interest is Penny. I'm Guessing that is the Admirals daughter. Flash back to the original in the scene when the aircraft commander is about to Tell Mav and Goose they are going to Top Gun. Just before that he laying out all the reasons he can't believe he is about to do what he is about to do because, ie. “You’ve been busted, you lost your qualifications as section leader 3 times, put in hack twice by me, with a history of High Speed passes over 5 air traffic control towers and one Admirals Daughter” Goose whispers to Mav..."Penny Benjamin?" Thoughts?
I would totally love to see a Top Gun Rooster. Maybe Amelia could become a fighter pilot and Rooster and Maverick could teach her. I also think that most of the young pilots in Maverick should be in it because they are essential characters.
I think Maverick hung it up because he was on terminal assignment. But a Top Gun Rooster would be cool, but only if they get to play with the F-35s. Maybe a story similar to Top Gun, where Rooster finds his Wingperson. Maverick could act as a confidant.
You missed another 'Star Wars' similarity: Sneaking through the Death St... er enemy base to activate the esoteric piece of equipment so they can escape in the beloved hunk of junk.
Fun Fact. at 7:48, a crash is shown. It's a Canadian Forces CF-18 Demo that lost power in one engine while practicing a low speed pass at Lethbridge, Alberta in 2010. The pilot ejected and survived.
@@DitchdoctorAG There are videos on RUclips but I learned of it at the Military Museums of Calgary. They had a static display of a CF-18 but in the corner of that room was a Martin Baker ejection seat with the most amazing sequence of still photos of the crash.
@@ragingpotato Yep, And since the ejection sequence is the RIO then the Pilot, neither of them is ejecting. After the fight though, Maverick should have gone through the emergency landing check list which includes checking the arming switches.
@@pogo1140 Ejection can happen three ways. Pilot activation ejects both, rear seat activation can be set to eject rear seat only or both. With dual ejections, the rear seat always goes first in order to avoid frying its occupant. In the RAF, failure to arm the ejection seats correctly usually ends in death or court martial.
I think Glen Powell would’ve done amazing as Goose’a son but Miles Teller did amazing as well and in all honesty I knew he was talented and I loved him before Maverick but he exceeded my expectations by far!!
I think they should do a sequel with Rooster but I wouldn’t make it Rooster’s. I think the Maverick saga was tied up nicely and should be left that way. The Rooster series or sequels should be their own stories built on the legacy…
Wanted a sequel since the original. Favorite movie of all time. Perfect storyline for a sequel. Can't say this is better. Enhanced, definitely. They're equal for different reasons for me. Another Top Gun without Maverick in the driver's seat isn't on my radar. Pun intended. Just wouldn't be the same. Can they come up with a storyline that truly makes sense w/out Maverick and could it be as badass without him? Wouldn't make sense to me, but we'll see.
@The Why At 10:37 for entry #19 there was a second change: the word "insure" was corrected to "ensure". ".. and to ensure that...". You can see the 1986 typo at 10:39 in the video.
The navy said yes to Tom Cruise flying their F18 super hornet, but only if he passed the qualifications like every other pilot. It was the studio and their insurance company that said NO.
12:20 Wait, you say they could only do one take, but the BTS shot is very different from the one in the film - none of the actors nor the car is there, so this is clearly a different shot. Of course, I also don't see the roof lifting off in the BTS one, so perhaps this is a practise run and the one they filmed was lower and thus was strong enough to lift the roof and "destroy the set" as they put it.
A 3rd film focused on rooster could work if cruise was in it even a small part! Maybe play him as a now retired father figure? After all in this film he was told" this would be his last mission!" Or a prequel? Focusing of mavericks dad and how he died in the infamous "boogys were like fire flys all over the sky" dog fight!
Fun fact 31: “Men” changed to “men and women” wasn’t the only thing changed in the opening script. The word “insure” was changed to the more grammatically-accurate “ensure.” 😎
One thing I noted was the fact that Iceman's funeral was carried out by a Marine detail. I don't know how that came to be since each military branch has their own funeral detail. Being an Admiral especially, the ceremony would have been carried out by the Navy.
I’ve not seen it done before. I’ve only seen branches take care of their own branch normally. Unless there just weren’t personnel available and they were desperate for bodies.
@@999masyuk Not quite. Teh Marines are under the umbrella of the Navy, but each will usually take care of their own. Since he was and admiral, I can see a couple Marines being in the party, but not the entire party. Hollywood does what looks good and I'll admit that Marine dress uniforms look a ton better the E1-E6 dress whites. I love my chokers, and loved my crackerjacks, but the whites, nah.
Actually there are two differences between the opening text in the 1986 film and the 2022 film. In the 1986 text, (10:38) they said, incorrectly, “to insure” instead of “to ensure” which is the correct word.
Ha! Nice catch. They were at least gonna give them pilot life insurance for their wives if they died. Thoughtful! 😂 How embarrassing for the person who was responsible for typing that copy (both versions, really - it’s gross that they’d revise it to add women, when women were absolutely not allowed in 1969. I’m so tired of the pandering crap... and I’m a woman).
Thank you for this video. I love the way you brought up the USS Lincoln. But I'm surprised that you didn't say anything about the USS Theodore Roosevelt CVN 71. The aircraft carrier depicted in the final scenes when the final battle happened. That was not the Lincoln
I have heard about the third installment don't think that's going to be anything like the first two I just don't see it happening but that's just me I think everything that needs to be said has been said with these two
number 19 needs a small update.. to changes are made to the opening text. Insure was changed to ensure, and the women part was added. otherwise, great video :D

6:22 does it for me😂 Especially Phoenix
Dang... Add that to the list of call backs to the original movie. It's also the most subtle call back. Nicely done to spot that
@@keithouderkirk7493
It’s well known.
did anyone notice that Penny Benjamin in referenced in the original Top Gun? She was "one admiral's daughter"
I believe she was mentioned twice, and one of those times was by name.
That is actually GREAT attention to detail, by both the writers, and yourself.
She was only the admiral's daughter, but *** ******* *** **** ** ********** ******. Answers on a postcard please.
Watched it about a year ago with my uncle and grandpa and the music is already nostalgic
Great review of 30 topics. What background music is used ?
It’s was a great first movie!!
Lots of cool background stories about the making of a movie with waited decades for TOP GUN Maverick
The canyon run in Star Wars was inspired by the film 633 Squadron, about Mosquito fighter bombers
Its better than the first movie in dogfight scenes, would be awesome to see the franchise launch more sequel.
Fun Fact: Tony Scott’s idea (18) became Ace Combat 7
You missed another 'Star Wars' similarity:
Sneaking through the Death St... er enemy base to activate the esoteric piece of equipment so they can escape in the beloved hunk of junk.
A sequel to Edge of Tomorrow? Can't wait.... 🙂
The Ladies loved the beach scene!!!
Nice video and great secrets
Great review!
Fun Fact. at 7:48, a crash is shown. It's a Canadian Forces CF-18 Demo that lost power in one engine while practicing a low speed pass at Lethbridge, Alberta in 2010. The pilot ejected and survived.
I was there. I actually searched the comments to see if this was the crash I thought it was!
@@DitchdoctorAG There are videos on RUclips but I learned of it at the Military Museums of Calgary. They had a static display of a CF-18 but in the corner of that room was a Martin Baker ejection seat with the most amazing sequence of still photos of the crash.
The song in the background is so sweet!
Top Gun: Rooster, if the script and plot works, would be fantastic. Could Monica Barbero be involved?
Imagine Top Gun: Bob haha
The SR72 Darkstar is indeed real, and it will be in service next year.
Love it! Saw it in 4dx…twice 😂😂😂
4:48 one of the only videos that actually identifies the fact that he didn't pull the ejection seat safety pins when they were prepping to launch
No, if you look on top of the f-14's ejection seat, the arming switch is in the disarmed position.
@@pogo1140 so basically he didn't arm the ejection seat
@@ragingpotato Yep, And since the ejection sequence is the RIO then the Pilot, neither of them is ejecting. After the fight though, Maverick should have gone through the emergency landing check list which includes checking the arming switches.
@@pogo1140 Ejection can happen three ways. Pilot activation ejects both, rear seat activation can be set to eject rear seat only or both. With dual ejections, the rear seat always goes first in order to avoid frying its occupant. In the RAF, failure to arm the ejection seats correctly usually ends in death or court martial.
@@hb1338 I doubt that the RAF is going to be enforcing that when the pilot in question just stole an enemy aircraft
I think Glen Powell would’ve done amazing as Goose’a son but Miles Teller did amazing as well and in all honesty I knew he was talented and I loved him before Maverick but he exceeded my expectations by far!!
agreed.
Smile, thanks for your love and support towards me ❤🌹
Loved the movie. Great video!!!
Tom curise in space X ...hes really going into space...lol..talk about a show off😅👍🏻
@The Why At 10:37 for entry #19 there was a second change: the word "insure" was corrected to "ensure". ".. and to ensure that...". You can see the 1986 typo at 10:39 in the video.
"And a sequel to edge of tomorrow"
W H A T
Ed Harris also was in “The Firm” opposite Cruise
The navy said yes to Tom Cruise flying their F18 super hornet, but only if he passed the qualifications like every other pilot. It was the studio and their insurance company that said NO.
10:42 Figures. Getting _VERY_ freakin’ tired of history being re-written.
i was waiting for this!
Top Gun Hangman has my vote. I don’t mind that he’s arrogant. But undoubtedly gets a dose of humility at some point. No one stays that way forever.
Great video!!!
Great review.
A 3rd film focused on rooster could work if cruise was in it even a small part! Maybe play him as a now retired father figure? After all in this film he was told" this would be his last mission!"
Or a prequel? Focusing of mavericks dad and how he died in the infamous "boogys were like fire flys all over the sky" dog fight!
Fun fact 31: “Men” changed to “men and women” wasn’t the only thing changed in the opening script. The word “insure” was changed to the more grammatically-accurate “ensure.” 😎
grammarly did not exist in 1986 lol
The dark star isn't fake it was in the movie as a teaser trailer
One thing I noted was the fact that Iceman's funeral was carried out by a Marine detail. I don't know how that came to be since each military branch has their own funeral detail. Being an Admiral especially, the ceremony would have been carried out by the Navy.
The U.S. Marines are part of the Department of the Navy. They commonly detail Naval funerals.
I’ve not seen it done before. I’ve only seen branches take care of their own branch normally. Unless there just weren’t personnel available and they were desperate for bodies.
Isn't it the same dpmt
@@999masyuk Not quite. Teh Marines are under the umbrella of the Navy, but each will usually take care of their own. Since he was and admiral, I can see a couple Marines being in the party, but not the entire party. Hollywood does what looks good and I'll admit that Marine dress uniforms look a ton better the E1-E6 dress whites.
I love my chokers, and loved my crackerjacks, but the whites, nah.
Best movie of 2022
I watchwd Top Gun every day after school when it came out on VHS. I watched it daily for just over 3 years.
Thoughtful! 😂
How embarrassing for the person who was responsible for typing that copy (both versions, really - it’s gross that they’d revise it to add women, when women were absolutely not allowed in 1969. I’m so tired of the pandering crap... and I’m a woman).
Iceman's speech to Maverick was 🥶
Thank you for this video. I love the way you brought up the USS Lincoln. But I'm surprised that you didn't say anything about the USS Theodore Roosevelt CVN 71. The aircraft carrier depicted in the final scenes when the final battle happened. That was not the Lincoln
Top Gun was by far the best picture in a long time and was better than the first
I have heard about the third installment don't think that's going to be anything like the first two I just don't see it happening but that's just me I think everything that needs to be said has been said with these two
This sequel is way too good that part 3 wouldn't be necessary.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!! TOP GUN: ROOSTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
number 19 needs a small update.. to changes are made to the opening text. Insure was changed to ensure, and the women part was added. otherwise, great video :D
10:25 Nice music with a nice situation
I was hoping for Top Gun: Rooster 5 minutes after I walked out of the theater.
