The aircraft in question is not an SR-71 Blackbird. The aircraft that appeared in Top Gun: Maverick is a fictional version of the SR-71's successor, referred in the movie as SR-72 "Dark Star". What made the plane extremely realistic was the fact that they have worked with Lockheed Martin's Skunk Works Division, the company responsible for bringing SR-71 Black Bird to life (alongside several legendary aircraft in the US Military) to create a 1:1 model of what the plane would have looked like in real life.

We can easily fly the jet with either hand on the stick. Not saying Tom Cruise was in the front flying, he was not, but that is not something that can be only done from the back seat. one of the coolest details i've seen in this movie is at the climbout part of the mission. There is a very brief shot of the pilots pulling the pinky (paddle) switch on the stick before pulling it. That switch will disengage the G-Limiter, which allows them to pull past the 7.5g limit rooster mentions earlier in the film.

  • @markhenrysplayroom

May I add this: In the scene where Maverick proves that the mission could be flown everyone moves closer to the monitor as if to see if he can really do it. Only Warlock sat back in his chair showing us that Warlock has complete faith in Maverick's capabilities as a fighter pilot.

There's a lot of subtle, implied history between the two characters. For those in the audience paying close attention, there could be an entirely new story based on them. Maybe Warlock was similar to Cyclone at one point and Maverick won him over. Or maybe Warlock was a student of Mav at some point. He's one of my favorite characters in the story because I can imagine so much.

I just got around to watching it yesterday. It had no business being that good considering the original was 36 years ago and sequels are usually terrible after that long. I liked that they didn't name a 'real world' country as the antagonist which I think gave them more freedom with the script while still being relevant/believable to the current era. I sorta got the impression that it was borrowing heavily from the Israel raid on Iraq's nuclear installation with F-16s IIRC where they barely had enough fuel even with aux tanks to make the round trip.

Also, you technically can touch the windshield with your right hand in high G turns since the stick is center-mounted in the F-18. It will probably be uncomfortable, however, because the stick is designed for a right-hand grip.

I love your breakdowns like this. Thank you for your hard work and dedication. This was the 1st breakdown you've done that I knew more than 1 or 2 of. Maybe it's because I rewatched TopGun 5 or 6 times before seeing this one? I throughly enjoyed it. As a "bonus" you could have included that the movie was ready & the studio wanted to release it on a streaming platform but Tom Cruise refused. He said the money & time put into making the movie, audiences deserved the full theater experience & held it until it could go to theater.

The aircraft at 4:25 is not an SR-71. Lockheed Martin designed a unique aircraft specifically for this film. It’s a mock-up, meaning it doesn’t fly, however it is 100% a Skunk Works design just for Top Gun. It’s called the Dark Star, and during movement around the bases, US adversaries actually repositioned satellites to get a better look.

The one hand (at 6:10) touching the canopy only makes sense if Maverick switched hands on the stick. And though you don't necessarily "need two hands" on a turn (the throttles on the left wouldn't move if you take your hand off them), switching hands so the stick is in the left (to maintain the turn) would not be a good idea for a turn hard enough to form contrails.

Top Gun: Maverick is really a great sequel to a great movie. It isn't often that a movie is as good as, if not, better than its prequel. The crew did an amazing job with recreating some of the iconic shots like beach scene, Maverick on his bike, etc. There are a lot of sequels or remakes that ruin the recreation of iconic scenes, but that didn't happen here and the hardwork paid off. Maverick is the first non-superhero type movie in a long time to cross 1 Billion dollars.

I wanted to add to add two things. They used AI to create Val Kilmer's voice. But even in that scene he didn't need to say anything and it was very impactful. Just some words on the computer screen and his expression was enough to tug at anyone's heartstrings that Ice and Mav have become such good friends. But also, secondly, when Rooster says at the end "It's what my dad would have done," you could interpret that as his "dad" being both Goose and Maverick, bringing full circle that Rooster finally accepts that Maverick was doing his best to be a father figure to him. Such a great moment when they reconciled.

A small information for the obsessive nerd like me: at 4:11, the experimental aircraft is not an SR-71, but a SR-72, actually a drone still in phase of developement ny Lockheed.
Nevertheless, you are absolutely right about the SR-71 being discontinued for the absurd cost of exercise, and also because the purpose was recognition but today any satellite can do much better at a fraction of the cost. I actually had the amazing luck to see one of those in Paris in 1989, when it was dismissed and Lockheed was finally authorized to show it to the public for a last time. I've seen it taking off, doing a low flight on the runway and disappearing in the clouds. Read the Wikipedia page about it, it is an absolutely amazing piece of old technology capable of mach 3.5 and 75.000 ft back in 1966!

11:36 Also, a couple of my friends who are Navy pilots weren't entirely sure but... they believe that the hand signals that the enemy pilot indicate to Maverick and Goose are as follows:
    First signal: "Follow me/ahead."
Meaning that the enemy pilot could see Maverick was trying to signal they had no radio. So they told them to follow them.
And when Maverick sees the second signal, while still saying he has no idea what they're saying, the enemy pilot signaled a three, three, and zero.
    Second signal: "Three, three, zero."
Which probably was the enemy pilot telling Maverick to turn and follow them to heading 330 to return to base. And then his wingman moved behind Maverick into a weapons envelope to begin escorting their F-14 back to base.

The aircraft in the movie was not an SR-71, it was incorrect to say "the aircraft SR-71, was simply too expensive... so this aircraft is currently not used anymore" as the SR-71 was never featured in the film, the supersonic aircraft in the film is based on the SR-72 concept, which is expected to fly sometime between 2025 and 2030.

I like to add, in one scene where Maverick is doing tight turns, can't remember if it was proving the team it is possible or the actual mission, it looks like the Gforce was too much and you see Tom Cruise what looks like either fighting hard against the Gs or slowly losing concussions. I can't wait to get this on BluRay to see if my theory is correct, but if you see it before me, let me know.

Another scene that had no verbal dialogue was right before they left the carrier on the mission, Rooster and Maverick were about to talk and then didn’t. They stood there, looked at each other and then walked away from each other. You can tell at that point that Rooster forgave Maverick finally for the death of his father.

I don’t think Rooster was thinking about Maverick being responsible for Goose’s death after the test run.
Rooster’s entire dislike of Maverick in this movie comes from the fact Maverick pulled his papers and set his career back by years. Unless I’m mistaken, Rooster only brings up Goose’s death once and it’s in relation to when Maverick tells him to “believe me”.

I started watching this with great skepticism. I was figuring another video of why the movie was phony.
This was a very good video showing just how much attention to detail went into this.
I love the movie. Most of the things I picked up on but a few you pointed out reinforced just how this movie crossed parallels of romance, action, suspend and yes some comedy.
    Well done

What amazes me is that storywise this film is just glorified trench run from starwars, yet the execution and dedication the crew put into it makes it a gem I will be comming back to over and over.

Many films have done that “trench run” before and after. It’s not a new thing.

8:47 Rooster isn't actually angry at maverick for his father's accident, he was angry that maverick held him back by pulling his papers from the naval academy years back which costed him 4 years of his career.

I look at that as true and false. Sometimes you resent those involved because you wish they could have helped or did better. I would say he was mad at both things.

Which is just stupid to begin with. He didn't hold his career back four years, he presented him with the opportunity to get a real education.

Except for all mistakes in this one he made.
Calling the darkstar the sr71, saying the rhino was for the nose cone of the f18 when it really has to do with signifying which model of the f18 is landing so the flight crew knows how to set the deck up for the weight of the plane and a few where he is really stretching his ideas to make something fit.

Fun video to watch. Loved all the cool observations! Tom Cruise's performance gives this movie the emotional gravitas that makes it so good. He really knocked it out of the park on this one.

This Maybe the single best film of the decade for totally different reasons. It grounded impossible story to the point it kept us at the edge of the seat the whole time, it didn't need humor to be funny and was more funny than love and thunder, the action is far too good than anything, it didn't need a big bad at the end for success and story, it developed a bond and relationship among maverick with rooster and Penny so well without any forced and cringe romance. To me this and zack snyder's justice league are the prime examples of how team up films and action films are to be made and how sequels should be done because maybe other than terminator judgeemnt day, this Maybe my favorite sequel of all time and it's crazy that since endgame I cried 5 times in this movie for nostalgia but because I was so satisfied to the point that I jumped from my seat and started clapping and shouting in the theatre, this is a near perfect film with next to 0 flaws

I didn't know what to think when I first heard they were making a Top Gun sequel. I mean, how do you pull off a decent follow up of an iconic 80s movie like that. Then I saw it. I couldn't believe what I was watching. Such an incredible movie.

Correction: Maverick completed the mission during training in 1:59 secs and not 2:06 as I indicated in previous comment. I also like to add that Hondu was sad because he knew that Maverick's will surely be appointed as team leader after proving that he is the only one competent enough to be team leader. Hence, his life will be in grave danger.

He completed the training mission in 2:14:84
The timer reads minutes:seconds:milliseconds, and there was 00:00:16 on the clock when he completed it. It was 16 milliseconds, not whole seconds.

This movie is down right amazing. I didn’t know that we needed this film until I saw it in theater’s. I saw it on its release day and it’s the only film I’ve seen more than once at the theater. Tom Cruise is phenomenal and every scene was near perfection. One of the greatest films and sequels of all time for sure

Didn't have too high of expectations going in to Maverick and it blew me away. Seen it probably a dozen times already. Definitely one of my favorite movies of all time. Great from start to finish.
