What makes this scene even more powerful is the way it was written into the script, far before the animations ever came. To quote, "Miles walks to the edge of the of the roof, the wind is buffeting... and LEAPS! The camera is UPSIDE DOWN. Miles isn't *falling* through the frame. He's RISING.
@@Tornadospring It's metaphoric. He technically isn't rising, but because the camera is placed upside down, showing him moving upwards instead of falling, that is used to symbolize a rise.
I really love that they never demonize his uncle. yes, he’s a criminal, but he’s not a cartoonish villain. he loves others, lives somewhere, enjoys music, is a *person* . and more than that, is a person Miles loves back, even if it’s complicated. he doesn’t turn away from the good parts of his uncle, but takes them in as guidance, just as much as the good things about his dad. in a way, Miles’ success is the brothers reconciling through him
I didn't even notice that Miles was running across the buildings like his uncle. Such a small detail that brings so much depth to Miles morales even more
@@elwoodstelhommme8745 16:40 he talks about it here. He identifies they Miles has his own completely unique style of swinging through the cities compared to the other spidies. He's influenced by those around him including his uncle. As the prowler, his uncle parkours across building walls with huge burst of movement. Miles matches this with his own webspinning and spidey movement as he takes his leap of faith. Compare it to Peter Parker, you see him confidently or non-chalantly crawling, walking vertically, or just web spinning across the city walls so there's a direct contrast to Miles making his own identity as Spiderman.
Fun fact. During the beginning of the movie, Miles was animated at a slower frame rate to give him a clumsy and hesitant over all look. As he refined the control over his power they animated him at a higher frame rate to make his movements smoother and more crisp. I love this movie!
I'm obsessed with the concept that the glass breaks when Miles jumps off the building because he's still nervous & can't unstick his hands because of that fact. I never thought of that. Thanks so much for bringing that little bit of genius to light!!!
same! Hadn't made the connection but it makes so much sense. He's meant to relax and just let go but isn't sure he's ready, but he takes the leap of faith and just goes for it. It's so awesome! This film is just so, so amazing!
The glass break is the defining moment of the movie for me. It's the part that sells the fact that this IS a leap of faith. If he'd just jumped it would be easy to say, sure they say it's a leap of faith but he's Spider-Man, he was never in danger... but that one tiny addition (alongside the earlier scene that set up that he needs to relax to unstick) really sells to me how terrified he is in that moment, but still commits.
I think it's poetic that the thing that his uncle taught him, the 'hey', was the main thing that beat Kingpin, the man who killed his uncle in the first place
Think it was a tip of hat to Carl Young the philosopher. Who said our consciousness is the tip of the ice berg. There is so much more of us that exist in the subconscious. We must master the dark side to become the whole. Like, when Pinocchio and his father are swallowed by the whale. He has to light a fire from wood face his fear to set them free from the whale then he becomes a real boy.
I feel like Miles' main struggle being self doubt is very fitting as in a traditional Spider-man story there's only one Spider-man, whereas for Miles there are other Spider-people that he will inevitably be compared to.
If you watch the movie again when he first meet spiderman you can see behind miles the color of the prowler turning into blue and red cause he leaving the influence of his uncle
He is Spider-Man, and as such had to lose someone. The fact that His uncle was set up as such a good person and influence to miles, and the fact that he died due to miles and his inability to “take care” of him, just hurts, and makes it so emotional, and has so much impact because we weren’t Expecting his uncle to be the one to die
It is interesting since you have anime directors like Satoshi Kon and Sushio who have entirely different animation (and directorial) styles, though we’ve all sort of agreed what in general looks like anime.
The way miles was flailing around while webbing shows that its not over. He's not perfect at web slinging at all, but it's good enough. It's literally a leap of faith.
I like how the sounds in “What’s up danger” Sounds similar to the prowler theme, symbolizing that Miles is not running away from the danger, but now running to it, hence the name of the song
I will always remember when I went to the cinema because I was bored and I bought a ticket to see this movie because it was the only room that had seats. I went without expectation, without seeing any trailer, without knowing the movie existed, and yet when Miles took the leap of faith, I remember getting goosebumps and starting to cry. That scene and that movie has been the greatest work of art that I have ever watched and it was all just by chance.
The whole movie is the source of that scene so, it gave him a lot more information cover. I mean this man went well into detail;even about certain camera angles. I truly appreciate his expressed overview on the whole movie and I feel the same about it.
Ito be successful all you need to do is be good at making the most boring thing seem like the only thing in the world. Manipulation, business, law, day-to-day life. This skill is one that should be known. I would leave examples but this is getting too long.
My wife was a dancer and she brought a great detail to my attention. In ballet, the only acceptable colors for shoes are pink and white. Gwen’s being a greenish color is the ballet version of punk.
@@Jayquinator-X sure maybe. But considering Gwen is in a punk band in the comics, I think it’s probably a punk thing and not a reality thing. But I dunno. It’s a cool detail.
YES!!! 100% this!! I've been gradually getting less and less interested in the MCU movies because it feels like Marvel is going for profit first and true cinematic art second. Quantity over quality. It feels like there's always a new MCU movie coming out & it's always a box office breaker, whereas the Spider-Verse creators have been taking their time to perfect the movies and it shows. Don't get me wrong, I fully recognize that a _lot_ of time and effort and care go into both Spider-Verse AND MCU movies & I've got total respect for those folks. (That's a lot of really hard work!) The MCU movies are still pretty good & are definitely very high production, the Spider-Verse movies just feel different to me. Also, this isn't any hate to folks who love the MCU, the creators of the MCU, etc., these are just my own thoughts and experiences. (Edited for formatting)
The glass shattering when he jumps shows he still is tense and possibly afraid but the flipped perspective of his jump shoes him rising instead of falling it’s soo good
it's kinda funny how if this movie gets a sequel (which it probably will), there's gonna be so much expectations and hype around it that the directors are gonna have to take the leap of faith to release it
im late but the sequel is coming out soon!! they changed some heads of department during production, but i really do believe that they’ll do it justice :D
This is what bums me out. I have faith in them, but it was such a stunning movie, that I don't know if anything can live up to all this hype. The expectation is like nothing I've ever seen because the movie is like nothing I've ever seen. Also, since you said "if", you should know that the sequel is set to release in late 2022, October 05.
Now after ATSV, it makes so much sense why miles parkours alot and swings less. After all he wasn't supposed to be Spiderman but instead become the prowler. Mannnnn this franchise IS SUCH A MASTERPIECE.
Animation, more than other forms of media, is all about the staff and cast tbh; you can pass a movie with mid direcion, mid actors and mid scores... but that would totally kill an animated feature no matter how big and rich the studio behind it is.
I still say that this is one of the most perfect movie experiences I've ever had. Usually I'm the type to complain about petty dumb crap with my friends as the credits are rolling and we have our post-movie discussion, but after this movie we just kind of sat there in the theatre seats like, "... we have nothing bad to say about this movie."
Children will never know what it was like to see this scene for the first time in theaters. It was dead silent, him rising up to the city is probably one of the most iconic pieces of art I will ever see.
Agreed. 👏🏼👏🏼💯💯I went to go see it like the 3rd weekend it was out so there weren’t that many people in the auditorium with me. I was amazed & smiling hard as I watched this scene. :))
Reminder that during his early “test-run”, he tries to jump towards a rooftop next to the Trust Us Bank but ends up tripping on his shoe laces. Fast forward to the leap of faith, and one of the emphasized scenes was him successfully jumping across onto that very same bank
Also, want to point out something I realized while watching this video essay is that Fisk is the perfect villain for Miles to face. He represents the societal norm of what it means to be successful: money, power, fame, his own building. However, while Fisk conformed, Miles rose above to conquer and form his own success with the final battle being Miles defiant defeat over "success" as concept of one meaning.
@@tristanlanphere7736You can't appreciate the art. The movie shows of what is made with the fact in what in the begin of film Miles was animated with less photograms and at the end were animated with more while he learn how to be spiderman.
Not only does Miles's "parkour" style of webslinging represent his influence from his uncle, it also references earlier in the movie when he says he prefers running over slinging. It's satisfying to watch him use webs to boost his running and jumping because it represents him combining the two aspects of himself, Miles and Spiderman, into one fluid and robust style of movement that perfectly encapsulates who he is.
Was going to say the same thing (glad I scrolled down!) - the line earlier that he runs better than he swings, but Peter insisting he swing, it mirrors all of the themes of self versus the expectations of others. In most movies it would be a throwaway joke like, "haha look he can't swing so he's just running instead", but here its a core part of the theme and it comes full circle to Miles creating his own unique way of navigating the city.
@@andrewloris3209 there are some seriously sad moments, and some beautifully moving scenes too. I think it's one of the best animated movies ever made, not just Spider-Man, but animated.
@@EndureTyrant it truly is the greatest animated movie ever made in my humble opinion. Spirited away, The Lion King and other Studio Ghibli movies may (or may not) come close but they don't bring out emotions in me quite like Spider-Man: ITSV does. @@peterdante1946 I'm saying just on a technical level, the skill of the writing, the animation quality, the story itself, etc. This movie is significantly better than most of the movies you mentioned on all of these fronts. I think even as a non Spiderman fan, this movie is still one of the best animated films of all time. I love Spiderman, but I didn't have any real connection to any of the characters in this movie specifically, they had to earn that. I still ended up loving this movie above all the others. Spiderman was solidified as my favorite superhero, and this movie is actually a part of that. Now, you could make the argument that this movie doesn't work as well if you're not a fan of superhero movies, but I don't think you need to be a Spiderman fan to have it connect on the same level.

16:55 Coming back to this great video after watching Across the Spiderverse and gasped at the line ‘In fact, he moves more like his uncle than anyone else…’🤐👀
I rewatched this movie over the summer and I felt the same intense emotions I did from my first viewing. Especially the “Leap Of Faith” scene; I cried both times over how incredible the scene is and still remains to be.
I don't normally believe in perfection. I always believe something can be improved on, in what ever topic is being talked about. But this scene. It is one of the few things I don't think could be improved on at all. It is completely perfect and this video explains why amazingly. Great job Blizzic, spectacular to have you back
No matter how much confidence you have in taking that leap of faith, there's always going to be that little twinge of fear. For miles, that's the glass
@@finnadler1356 After scrolling down a bit, i noticed you a copied a comment from "Hi I'm Aiden".. why? Couldn't you have said something else?.. I hope the 31 likes were worth it.
The camera angles and character positions in this animation speaks so much too. You see it in the beginning of the movie through the end. The camera flows, almost walking alongside Miles as he talks and waves to his peers. It swings, bounces, turning and connects his comfort zone. But when he’s in the academy, it is centered on him in the middle of attention. It’s stuck in a static position, staying the same and cold. Then there’s the beginning with his fathers. Position farther and looks smaller compared to his father, who’s upfront and at a angle with him. The lightening is dull inside, yet the light outside is warm, almost out of reach. It’s true, perspectives make a change.
One of my favourite moments is after this scene when goes to help out at the collider and makes his first appearance as Spider-Man, Peter calls him "Miles", but Doc Oc who has been calling the normal Spider-Man "Peter" for the entire film calls Miles "Spider-Man"
To add to that comment, when it’s time for Gwen to go back to her universe, she calls Miles « Spider-Man » for the first time. She finally recognizes him worthy of the title of Spider-Man, which makes this goodbye scene so much more powerful ... and thank god they didn’t kiss and just became friends instead because it is not the purpose of the plot. Anyway I thought that it was also important to mention
When Miles meets Peter Parker for the first time, the effects above his head are green and purple. This suggests (at least in my opinion) that he’s going down the path of his uncle, whose colors are also green and purple. Then... they turn red and blue just like Peter Parker’s Spider-Man. This suggests he’s ready to follow the path of Spider-Man. Thoughts?
Because they made the background green and purple to show that his spider sense is slow and was still warning him about a danger that had just happened
I don’t know if anybody noticed but Miles is literally just a middle schooler! A MIDDLE SCHOOLER! He saved the world as a middle schooler while when the others became spider people when they were in high school. That makes it more challenging for Miles bc he’s only like 12 or 13. At that age your discovering a lot of things abt growing up. He became Spider-Man in middle school which makes him less qualified than the others, making him learn and grow even more than them.
as a teen i was always lamenting the fact that i was born too late to experience a lot of the things i'm into now, but im so, so happy that i was born at just the right time to see this movie in theaters during my own formative teen-young adult years. i always considered myself an artist and a storyteller, but i was literally a changed person after walking out of the theaters that night
There's a really good behind-the-scenes breakdown of how they made the BUILDINGS at an angle so that it looked even more imposing as he jumped off. Like the buildings are at an impossible angle but it's an artistic choice that subconsciously ups the stakes.
@@SatrnOne yeah and in that dutch tilt shot where he's curled up on the wall the building is framed so that it takes up most of the shot, which adds a sense of constriction (contrasting to the later shots which make them even more powerful)
Bro...You absolutely KILLED this breakdown. I can't even begin to explain how much this movie means to me, and you put words to FEELINGS bro. Like the Prowler influences were mind-blowing, and something I had never thought about. And your part about how it inspired you to tackle your own "Great Expectations", is SOO accurate. by far this has to be one of the best video essay I have come across on this app. after watching ‘across the spiderverse’ and then immediately being recommended to me, I’ve been in awe of just how genuine this entire franchise has been. Not only is what makes Miles’ story and what it reflects successful, it’s also love they put into this movie as a whole. As someone who is also afro-latino, I see myself a lot in him with the way he interacts with his parents and how they do with him. Seeing someone who honestly looks like I could be related to be the protagonist of one of the most beautiful and impactful cinematic movies makes me so happy. You did an amazing job analyzing this movie, it was genuinely so special and captured the beauty of ‘into the spiderverse’ perfectly :)
As a Shakespeare fan, maybe this can actually help students understand why Shakespeare has such depth and meaning? You understand the video's points, right? Shakespeare analysis is really not that different.
I like how there’s also apathetic cynical adult Peter Parker, who has lost his spark. Although you can find it when you are young it’s easy to lose it when you’re older but you can still be inspired and reconnect by taking those same risks you do when you’re young.
Peter B. Parker is such an interesting character, his journey to take a leap of faith about having kids just as Miles needed one to face his responsibilities instead of running from them is amazing (and kind of the same concept if we think about how rasing a child is a BIG responsibility) honestly, my favourite moment is when he tells Miles how proud he's of him lmao
@@galaxyjaam039 Regular Peter Parker represents the perfect ideal image. He is the way society expects us to be, while all of the others are who we really are. He's been doing the job long enough to know what he's doing and make it look easy and people look up to and idolise him (which all goes towards putting more pressure on Miles). In reality, from the tiny glimpse we get of Peter, we know that even he can't live up to this ideal. He says he's tired, and it doesn't feel like he's talking about just this one fight - he's tired of having to be the perfect Peter Parker.

And the tention created by the perfect mixture between characters, visuals and sounds is what creates the good set up for an awesome scene. to this day the leap of faith scene gets me teary eyed. There is so much catharsis in that scene. It's beautiful and heartbreaking, cool and impressive. And that moment caught in slow motion, where he is rising instead of falling is truly the pinnacle of it all bc that's what *faith* is. This is such a beautifully crafted analysis, you understood the movie in such a deep level I can just feel how it resonates with you through the way you passionately narrate it.
I was looking for a comment on this. I watched an interview with the directors of the movie (I forgot which one) and they admit they "curled" the buildings to match the scene, they even compare the models from that in a flat sphere, where some of the buildings are elevated and tilted in a certain way.
everything is great about this film, but my most favourite scene in it is the leap of faith. It includes Miles still being kind of afraid to do it, backing off a bit forward, and taking away some glass at the jump. Miles is faced off by his great fears, and the music with the silence before the jump makes you know that. It feels so powerful I can't even describe it.

I must admit, this film is one of the rare ones to actually impact me deeply, especially recently. And that leap of faith… _unbelievably_ impactful. The call-backs and music help tie it together. Even upon review, and completely in the face of the comedy (spider pig, spider pig…), this movie can bring tears to my eyes. Damn you for making me queue it up again for viewing tonight.
This movie is far and away my favorite film of all time. It's been a massive part of my life since I saw it for the first time. I can't put into words how much I love every part of this film. The leap of faith is my desktop wallpaper, I played through all of Spider Man Miles Morales with just the spiderverse suit, and my grad cap this year had the "that's all it is, a leap of faith" quote on it. I don't think I realized just how much I connected with this film until watching this video, thank you.

Miles' character arc even has a meta element with this movie. For a long time, Miles was just another Spider-Man. The black Spider-Man. The replacement Spider-Man. Anything you could get from him, you'd just get from Peter, as no one understood what made Miles stand out. Suddenly, thanks to this movie, Miles' popularity exploded. Everyone wanted more of him because he truly came into his own. He wasn't just another Peter Parker, he is Miles Morales. He's getting more presence in the comics, he's being talked about more, and got his own video game just recently. Both in the story and in a meta element, Miles finally became Spider-Man. *His* Spider-Man.
yeah the movie def increased his popularity and also fixed some of his story imo. Such as making his family be like an average family in brooklyn, instead of his comic book counterpart where his father is a Shield agent. And just like you said, this film finally gave Miles what he deserves. He finally became what his creator wanted him to be, Spider-Man. No longer is he some replacement for Peter but actually Spider-Man.
To me they also mocked, in a sense, the spiderman that the public is supposedly comparing miles to, which is peter parker. Its like they forgot that peter parker is far from perfect. A lot of people was saying, there is nothing that wouldnt make miles just the second spiderman. Like peter is everything that is the superhero. They literally made a perfect spiderman and killed him. Right in front of us and miles. The real, actual peterparker that we have, P b P, is shown and he is broken. Its actually sad to see him on screen and it shows that non of the spiderman was ever ready to take the role not even the original one and miles is the same. Thats what makes them admirable that what makes him THE spiderman.

What do you mean running across the building like his uncle?

@@CalebBerman YES. A LOT.
Fun fact. During the beginning of the movie, Miles was animated at a slower frame rate to give him a clumsy and hesitant over all look. As he refined the control over his power they animated him at a higher frame rate to make his movements smoother and more crisp. I love this movie!

Wow I didn’t notice that
same! Hadn't made the connection but it makes so much sense. He's meant to relax and just let go but isn't sure he's ready, but he takes the leap of faith and just goes for it. It's so awesome! This film is just so, so amazing!
you can also see the glass ripple for a few frames before it breaks
damn do yall even pay attention to the movie?
The glass break is the defining moment of the movie for me. It's the part that sells the fact that this IS a leap of faith. If he'd just jumped it would be easy to say, sure they say it's a leap of faith but he's Spider-Man, he was never in danger... but that one tiny addition (alongside the earlier scene that set up that he needs to relax to unstick) really sells to me how terrified he is in that moment, but still commits.

He has to light a fire from wood face his fear to set them free from the whale then he becomes a real boy.

One of my favourite moments is after this scene when goes to help out at the collider and makes his first appearance as Spider-Man, Peter calls him "Miles", but Doc Oc who has been calling the normal Spider-Man "Peter" for the entire film calls Miles "Spider-Man"
well...yeah. She doesn't know who Miles is, lol
I really liked that scene, as Doc Ock seems to finally realise who Miles is - he's Spider-man
To add to that comment, when it’s time for Gwen to go back to her universe, she calls Miles « Spider-Man » for the first time.
Thoughts?
i never noticed until another y-tuber pointed it out. thats just really cool aesthetic story telling and alternate-foreshadowing

To say this is the greatest scene in movie history when everything in this movie has been shown in previous movies is a bit of tilting.

There are a lot of bad movies, and a few good one.
Even fewer movies really have the story, the characters, the visual style and the sound down.
But this movie doesnt just have a good mixture between all those things. It has the best mixture ive seen so far in a superhero movie. And the tention created by the perfect mixture between characters, visuals and sounds is what creates the good set up for an awesome scene.
But this movie didnt just use the set up to create a scene that is awesome. That scene works so incredibly well and looks and sounds and feels so good that i can comfortably claim that "a leap of faith" is the best scene in any movie I´ve ever seen
@@voelligbanane844 Maybe it’s the best scene in any movie you’ve ever seen, and don’t get me wrong, it is a great scene, but to say it’s THE BEST scene in all of cinema is just not true.

speaking for all Spider-Man fans, this movie was a gift for all of us. You can ask any Spider-Man fan about this movie and they'll tell you the same thing as i do: This movie is perfect. It shows everything that Spider-Man represents to the core.
never caught that Miles and his uncle have the same moves. I'm crying a little
to this day the leap of faith scene gets me teary eyed. There is so much catharsis in that scene. It's beautiful and heartbreaking, cool and impressive. And that moment caught in slow motion, where he is rising instead of falling is truly the pinnacle of it all bc that's what *faith* is. It is small like miles is in the frame, and with those looming challenges that surround you on your way down it is that one thing that gets you up. Faith. That's all it is.

I can't escape this meme-
miles swings like his uncle is also a call back to when they first break into the subway to do graffiti and miles scales the gate just like his uncle and when he lands you can see they're dressed just like each other. he really looked up to him and the detail the writers went into to show that is amazing considering the comic didn't flesh out their relationship nearly as well

This is such a beautifully crafted analysis, you understood the movie in such a deep level I can just feel how it resonates with you through the way you passionately narrate it.
The buildings DO curl around Miles; the models were created on a sphere, to create this forced perspective of enlarged, encompassing buildings.
I was looking for a comment on this. I watched an interview with the directors of the movie (I forgot which one) and they admit they "curled" the buildings to match the scene, they even compare the models from that in a flat sphere, where some of the buildings are elevated and tilted in a certain way.

When Miles' dad comes to him in the dorm room, that's the first time he crosses the centerline toward his son..... food for thought

everything is great about this film, but my most favourite scene in it is the leap of faith. It includes Miles still being kind of afraid to do it, backing off a bit forward, and taking away some glass at the jump. Miles is faced off by his great fears, and the music with the silence before the jump makes you know that. It feels so powerful I can't even describe it.
This movie deserves all the love, i can't get enough of it even months later
even a year later
Righttttttt I'm still watching movie and showing it to as many people as I can lol
@Mohamed DO IT. It's so incredibly worth it
Yesssss

So, even though I specifically tested to make sure this weird aspect ratio worked on youtube and found that they apparently had me covered, turns out, end screens are not supported on this type of video.
I should also mention that this video was instantly demonetized because I wanted it to have relevant music, so I can't profit from this video at all. No ad revenue, no sending people to my other content. It all goes to the asshole copyright claimers.

Fr bro, I have no clue what lord of the flies is about 😂😭
Dude no joke I’m so lucky, my English teacher is wonderful. He’s hilarious and an effective teacher, he’s similar to a college professor.
@@Jester8492 i didn't like miles original run in the comics forma few reasons like the one you've mentioned. I love this movie.

I’m sitting here in absolute tears. I haven’t been able to lay a finger on why this movie means so much to me. Now it makes so much sense. I’m right where Miles is, trapped in the in between, longing to be myself and survive- to live. I’m overwhelmed by the fears that I will stumble and my life will crumble. My hands are still stuck to the glass. Now I realize I can’t wait till I’m not scared. It’s all I can do. It’s what I’m supposed to do. I’m inspired to take the leap.
Currently with a fight with my dad, watched this exactly after he gave me a talk like Miles father did.
This video made me cry, I never understood how similar I can be to a character and actually relate to the problems.

I think it's awesome that during the street art painting scene in the subway tunnels with his Uncle, he did all the work with advice and a little help from his Uncle until the very last part where he needs help outlining his body to which his Uncle helps with by spraying it himself, being the last finishing touches on Mile's art, kinda showing how much Miles' family is still the centerpiece of his struggle to find out who he wants to be, and after his Uncle's passing that question is finally answered and that outline is filled in
