- Tonight we put Smoke Wagon Uncut Unfiltered up against Starlight Huber's Single Barrel Pick, Traverse City Whiskey Company Barrel Proof Pick, Back Bone Bourbon Uncut Pick, and Old Grandad 114. Can any of these compete with what has become a recently crowned legend in Smoke Wagon U/U?

Such a tough blind. We’ve had stellar Starlight single barrel picks that blew us away. And we got to try some real solid Backbone recently as well. Batches vary, but these U/U bottles have blown us away, and of course, OGD 114 is always a treat. This was a fun one. Cheers!
Finally got my Smoke Wagon Uncut Unfiltered 😎great bourbon 🥃
Old Forrester 1920 punches with Smokewagon UCUF
“Well it’s not a man, it’s a bottle of whiskey…” 😂😂 Awesome blind flight and video, David!
Smoke Wagon U/U is one of the best.
I’m glad to see that the Backbone store pick did so well. Now I’m really looking forward to opening mine!
I live in Traverse City, will be heading over there soon for a tasting.
Love the blinds! Other competitor bottles 1920, Rare breed, and Ironroot.
What... I'm from saint louis and I have that same backbone store pick! I'm gonna pour it right now!
Luv the traverse-city bp, the rye is even better imo, they even make a cherry 🍒 bp (jamie would luv that one)
1. I didn't hear you mention that the top 3 are all MGP juice. I'm a fan of MGP.
2. I was curious wen you cracked the OGD 114. I bought it once and it was awful at first, but got much better after many months. I wonder if that's just me.
3. I have blinded SW UCUF with Kirkland's Barton SiB and an Old Ezra Distiller's Collection store pick and Kirkland came out on top for me twice. Maybe my Costco just got a homey barrel, dunno.
Fir me the OGD 114 gets a little more vanilla on the nose once it sits and I like it that way, but I still love it right on the open. Hell of a bottle for 20 bucks or whatever it is.
Typo on that "for". "Fir me" sounds cool and country, but I can't realistically pull that off. 🤘😂
I was disappointed when I opened my OGD 114. A few months in I went back and thought it was much better. Thought it was just me.
Another great review, even if it wasn’t meant to be.
I’d really like to try a traverse city cask strength, if they distilled it.
I’m still searching for a Smoke Wagon I want a second pour of……
Your mind was blown away again!!! Great job Jaime!!!
I found some old dusty bottles of Backbone Bourbon Uncut at a liquor store on the bottom shelf. It’s one of the best MGP bottles that I’ve had. I went back and bought everything that was left on the shelf at that store.
Lol... I have that exact same batch of backbone. I live in St. LOUIS and I bought 2 of those and killed one of them.
OGD114, the value king. I have a store pick of Traverse barrel strength that is very good also. I have had the others as well. Nice grouping.
This just popped up in my notifications…but I’m so busy at work. Cannot wait to get home to watch this. I am curious though…within the other runner up bourbons have a similar profile? I find SW UCUF to be quite unique…at the outset, the closest I’ve found was New Riff Single Barrel Bourbon UCUF (of however they call it). Have you tried the “Younger” yet? It is still sold out online but I’ll wait ;)
Love that you blind challenged your standard! OGD 114 such a great relative value.
Nice! Got to find a Traverse City now!
I'm in MI and had been turning up my nose at Traverse City until Bourbon Judge picked their barrel strength rye as his favorite. Not too long after, I visited a Total Wine that had a store pick of the bourbon. Both the bourbon and the rye barrel strengths are very good. I just wish they were cheaper than the $80 asking price. I'd choose a JDSBBP at $65 any day over the TC barrel strength.
And the quarterback is toast!
The Cognac finish is not apples to apples.
I'm glad to know Smoke Wagon U/U can be beaten. I just got a bottle today and it's just delicious. But maybe I don't have to run out and by 3 more to bunker! Thanks for a fantastic review!
The Starlight is $29 at my local grocery. I have a bottle of Starlight rye but haven’t bought the bourbon yet. They also have many finished versions.
I bought the last bottle of traverse city barrel proof from my local shop and then learned that BevMo had it on clearance for $10 but was completely sold out. Unbelievable for how good it is.
I made the mistake of just buying a small 200ml Traverse City BPSP when I was in Nashville a couple years ago. Took it with me on vacation last week because it's small and easy to pack. Turns out its an amazing bourbon! I should have bought the large bottle!!
Only living an hour away from Traverse City going to have to go over there. Usually passed them up since haven't heard many reviews. I think they have switched from MGP to there own juice now but not sure on that bottle. Hopefully there regular barrel proof is close to the store pick
Great lineup!
SWUUF is tasty...Great competition....Cheers U 2....
i have that world beverage pick. very small yield, and it’s so damn good. i need to grab another, they still have em.
Maybe I missed it, but which batch of Smoke Wagon was it? Unless I'm mistaken, the others you blinded are all going to be consistently the same juice. Some of the SW UCUF are super dark and rich, some are far lighter.
I am new to bourbon drinking(3 weeks) and get names wrong but I found a Smoke Wagon for 42 dollars at a local store. I think it was the small batch bottle and it had the wax guns pressed into the bottle. Is that a good price? and I think the uncut unfiltered was 70 dollars. Would you recommend these two Smoke wagons at those prices?
Yes, go UC/UF
Yes, the uncut is 70 and the straight bourbon is 33-40 I’d say. 42 isnt horrible.
There are several types of Travers City, which one did you use in your taste test?
Was the TC an MGP or distilled and bottled in Michigan?
If you still want some great mgp you can potentially find, Redemption High Rye Bourbon 10 year Barrel Proof. Smoke Wagon ucuf is good but that bottle will blow it away- one of the best in my collection. Retail is roughly 100 if you can find it.. 2nd is about 180 ish. It’s the best mgp left out there for the age and price . 114 proof
What is the proof on your Traverse City bottle?
I bet you could run this again tomorrow and the order would be different
Where can I purchase the winner?
Traverse City Michigan for the WIN !!!!! This is the 2nd video I've seen that TC has whooped that bourbon a$$......yes!
Since you live in VA, you should make an episode about the VA ABC employees selling the distribution list to Facebook Groups.
Omg, I'm so done with the VA ABC system. I tend to not make industry videos like that, but it's a good idea. Although I'd probably just yell at the camera the first half and then end it with a good cry 😂😂
Those top three are $90 to $100 by me. I'll stick with OGD114 for $30.
Haha the smoke wagon is good but it’s not great to me. You nailed it with the cereal grain note they can get a little grainy and youthful even. I actually prefer the small batch I have to my UCUF.
Noone really drinks any of the smoke wagon lineup where i live so they are everywhere on the self just waiting to be grabbed up same goes with the OGD 114. Everyone here is chasing the ragged pony here.
Back Bone The Forge would have given UU a run for the money
Stellum is better than SMUU
SW U/U is over priced imho....Rare Breed is higher aged better and cheaper
For me...OGD114 would be last place in every blind.
Peanuts, ethanol, and leather.
Harsher than any 114 proof I have had.
Barely worth the $29.99 bottom shelfer price.
The problem with doing these blind competitions is each whiskey affects your perception of the others. I was drinking a fairly light Stranahans blue Peak yesterday, then followed that with a little Redwood Empire Lost Monarch, another lighter whiskey, and it felt overbearing all of a sudden. If I had gone the other way, I guarantee I'd think the Blue Peak was weak with no flavor. I think we're better off getting to know and enjoy an individual bottle, without comparing it with others. Obviously we all have preferences, but I don't think these blinds are effective as a means of identifying them. BTW, I got a bottle of Smoke Wagon U/U today on sale for $60. I think it's pretty tasty, just based off the neck pour.
