    I love fighting games and I love FFXIV. I'm on a break from playing fighting games right now to prepare myself for the release of Akuma/Gouki in SF6 so that I don't burn out before I'm satisfied, so I had some time to put together a video and decided this was what I wanted to make. The fighting game to FFXIV pipeline is something I hear come up pretty often in the FGC, and I've even seen quite a few player tags I recognize just wandering about Eorzea on my own adventure. The retirement home is real, there are quite a few draws for fighting game players here. FFXIV requires significantly less "prep work" than other MMOs and as a result, it's an extremely convenient game to play alongside fighters. You can just boot up and do whatever you want whenever you feel like it! The raiding is definitely worth it.
    If you are reading this description and haven't tried FFXIV, c'mon go try FFXIV!
    If you are reading this description and you don't play fighting games, go play one! They aren't that scary.

    RE the double weave comment at 5:45. I think there's slightly more validity to this than might be expected. Obviously a double weave isn't anywhere close to the input precision required for certain combos, especially when you take the way XIV buffers inputs into account, but the type of execution challenge you experience is very closely tied to your job of choice.
    I'm a bard player and have taken the class through all of the savage and ultimate content in Endwalker. For me, "not dropping the infinite" while I dodge around and do mechanics isn't particularly difficult. I've got free movement and ranged attacks, so there's no excuse for me to go below 99% GCD uptime. What IS hard, is piecing together an RNG dependent rotation with 3 different GCD speeds, tons of weaves, and many cooldowns that have to be hit as tight as specific 1/2 GCD windows to ensure proper rational flow. If playing BLM is maintaining an infinite, playing BRD is making snap decisions to mix someone up with a fast-paced RPS rekka sequence.

    I have played fighting games all my life and I've never been interested in MMOs. And yet, after having the random urge to look at a bunch of content for the game on RUclips, I just downloaded the trial version yesterday and played for about 3 hours... And then I wake up and get this video...

  • @Vindaelyn
    @Vindaelyn Месяц назад +22

    Something I always like to mention to people is that the hard content in ffxiv (specifically Extreme, savage, and ultimate) is completely optional. I remember seeing footage of those raids and being really intimidated by it because of the teamwork aspect. For a long time I avoided ffxiv because I thought I would be expected to learn crazy complex mechanics quickly. I’m a slow learner who likes to lab things without the expectations and pressure of teamwork, so this was a hard stop for me.
    I was so relieved when I actually gave it a chance and realized that you are NEVER required to even attempt anything truly difficult unless you go out of your way to do so. I played for close to 1,000 hours ( over the course of about a year and a half ) before even attempting savage and never ran out of things to do. I get why people focus on hard content because it’s AWESOME once you’re into it, but I wish more people would talk about how gentle the learning curve is on normal content because it is genuinely great as well.

    Always wondered about the correlation, since me and a lot of other FG players are simply drawn to this game. I think all of your points make a lot of sense for me personally, and you explained them extremely well. One thing that makes me specifically drawn to it more than other MMOs is the art style and visual design. XIV looks and feels very anime, and it's closer to a lot of fighting games than the other MMOs. I find it simply way more fun to look at and customize your character than in WoW or ESO, for example. This would be a fun topic to discuss this with other FG players, hope this video does very well.

  • @ojosama
    @ojosama Месяц назад +30

    I'd also like to point out that content in FFXIV is ever green. Meaning that even though the game is over a decade old you can still find parties for all the content. Of course harder to find group for older content but with discords that are dedicated to older content you can do it. That means there is a decade worth of content available. Also it's kind of fun learning your job at all level caps.
    Also you didn't recommend Monk, oh the irony.

    • @HeartySnicker
      @HeartySnicker  Месяц назад +7

      But I did recommend Monk 😭
      I love that you can find parties for old content in 14, it's so sick. There's a lot I missed out on by starting at the very tail-end of Stormblood and I'm really glad I got to participate in some of that content anyway as a result!

    I instantly sent this to some friends that I play fighting games and XIV with. More specifically one of those friends got me into XIV and I like to think I had a small effect on their interest in fighting games (considering I yap at my friends about a lot of them a ton). This video expresses the exact reasons I was able to click with XIV so well (At least after a time. BLM does take a while to y'know, start being fun). Down to my rotation being like my normals in a combo to the unique but inherently categorized nature of playing a class like it's a character, which is something I love dearly. I love being able to look at myself and go I'M THE BLACK MAGE GUY as much as I love doing the same and going I'M THE RAMLETHAL GUY. Adding to the checklist of stuff you're video got dead on, Even on the fighting game side of things, outside of one or two of my friends I've often struggled to improve WITH them because it often feels like I'm the only one with the "fortitude" that you mentioned, to keep improving and learning in that competitive environment, BUT PERFECTLY PUT you don't need to worry about that head to head improvement in XIV because you aren't fighting against each other but fighting with one another, And it's led to some of these friends whom I play both XIV and fighting games with sinking way more hours into XIV than fighting games.
    (I didn't really know where to put these last to two thoughts so I'm tossing them down here)
    I tend to play BLM with the lens of a setplay player in fighting games, like I look at it as having a precanned plan with my setup of leylines and my rotation but with a limited advantage state being as I can't move often and with the skill to adapt in case something in my precanned plan doesn't go like I intended. Using my favorite fighting game character as an example, XRD Ram. Getting the boss into a situation where I know I can setup leylines for my burst window and adapting to any potential mess ups is not too unlike getting my opponent in the corner and setting up my preplanned mix up and adapting and reacting appropriately if they block it all.
    Also I play XIV with a numpad for all my spells and I tend to order my spells in ascending intensity on the 3x4 grid I map on it like normals in a fighting game, Think Fire I - Fire IV like Punch - Heavy Slash on an arcade stick.
    Absolutely amazing video, Completely baffled by how much of my own thoughts and feelings on both these things we're captured by someone who isn't me.

    Before I ever picked up FFXIV, I had played a decent amount of fighting games (especially DBFZ), but would always eventually bounce off. The consistent pattern was that I always had more fun practicing and mastering combos in training mode than I ever did trying to apply them in game, cause it felt bad to finally get it down after hours of practice, only to hop online and get demolished, never getting a clean opportunity to try out what I'd put in so much work for.
    When I started XIV though, the experience of learning and perfecting my rotation gave me the exact same dopamine rush as all the labbing in the training room. But unlike fighting games, my ability to not "drop" was completely up to me: As long as I stay on top of mechanics and don't let the chaos distract me, I get to win in the end. It was an amazing, addicting gameplay feeling, and thousands of hours later I'm now a pentalegend and getting ready to go for a week one clear of the first savage tier in Dawntrail. Thank you for the excellent video, you put XIV's appeal into words I never quite found.

    So I never really played fighting games competitively but just enough to know things, so I’m definitely not part of your intended audience.
    However.
    I am vaguely aware the pipeline exists from the legendary video of a bunch of fighting game players nerding out about shadowbringers job actions.
    Why do I remember that? Because those fighting game players remember nearly every action names on display and pointed out which ones are new despite having few indications of being hardcore ffxiv players. The amount of detail they got right was staggering, even better than actual ffxiv content creators.
    But that was not all, one particular moment stuck to me:
    When the NIN showcase came up, the game finally did away with the Duality action and turned it into Bunshin. The fg players’ response?
    They went absolutely hyped and immediately shouted *Genei Jin* .
    (The effect was more Seiei Enbu than Genei Jin, but you get the idea).
    That is when it clicked with me: Fighting games are often loaded with move names, even when the ultra popular ones would get nicknames. Of course a fg player would instinctively know what goes where.
    That was the time I got an instinctive understanding of fg players’ fascination with this game. Hell, I’ve made a joke about Angel’s combo system being a new MNK rotation at some point in some discord channels. Your video then just confirms what I experienced back then, even from the outside looking in.
    Walk on and see you in Dawntrail!

    As a long time FGC player and FF14 player I just wanna touch upon the class recommendations.
    If you're a tekken player like my self: I recommend Gunbreaker, it's the most mechanically intense tank and is similar to tekken in having ALOT of buttons.
    If you like rushdowns: play a Tank, Warrior is the most unga bunga and primal brain dopamine injector, but DRK also functions rotationally similar to WAR. If you like azreal from BB warrior, if you're a Susano-0 main DRK.

    One of the big reasons I like FFXIV is actually that it feels FG adjacent, without the stress of competition.
    I really like FGs but kinda don't like competing with strangers due to some intense anxiety issues, and FFXIV gives me a chance to really put myself in an environment that will test me without that pressure.
    I do wanna try and find a static for savage and ultimate eventually though, I wanna get fucked up

    I'm in this video (figuratively) and i love it. Even though I have a main, i still lab other characters a bit just for fun. In ff14 i learned the rotations/mechanics of all the classes even though i have a main. I agree with the muscle memory too. It makes it so much easier to do rotations compared to the long combos im used to.
    2 other things I noticed that carry over is reaction time and where my eyes are on the screen. Reacting to an overhead is alot harder than anything in ff14. And I never look at my character because I aware what my buttons are doing. I just analyze the mechanic, or stare at my party life if i'm a healer/tank.

    I also came into it from the FGC though I didn't hear the "FGC retirement home" meme until after and it made sense after thinking about how many FGC peeps I knew who played, I still dabble in FGs for sure, but not nearly as much as I'd like. That muscle memory is real AF tho haha I was a bard main, but slowly got into other phys ranged and now I have machinist tuned into my fingers I am afraid of going back lol I have all jobs at 90 now and I try and make my keybinds in similar spots for each job (as best I can) so it feels more smooth

    Only ever heard this sentiment from Lythero's 3 Idiots Rematch video, and after watching this I'm starting to see the validity.
    One thing I respectfully disagree with is the Shoto to Dragoon pipeline though. Shotos are my preferred archetype, but I gravitate more towards the tanks in FF14. Tank rotations are generally simpler when compared to the DPS ones, and most of the extra optimization is spacing out mitigations. Similarly, shotos are usually the simple beginner-friendly characters whose combos don't really ask much unless you're playing high level Akuma/Evil Shotos. I've only got my Dragoon up to level 72 and that rotation starts to get really complicated. Akuma is my favorite shoto, and Dark Knight is my favorite class in FF14. Both have relatively straight forward gameplans and have the aesthetic my inner edgy 13 year old loves. Also they die very quick lol.
    Obviously this is a personal anecdote. My FG/FF14 pipeline was Ryu -> Akuma and PLD -> DRK, so that's probably why I feel the way I do. Awesome video man!

    I am a casual fighting game player that picked up XIV in Feb. The pipeline is real 😱
    Sadly I fell out of the pipeline in the Heavensward patch quests after like 160 hours 🙁I think I gave the game a real shake though - I played WHM, SCH, SMN, (60+) WAR (59), MCH (51) plus a few DOL but didn't end up clicking with anything, and I didn't enjoy the main story enough to continue either. The FGC pals that got me into the game quit in ARR or in the patch quests. I think I made it the furthest out of all of them too😢
    I watched to the end though, because I really enjoyed the essay. You are very good at lining up clips with what you're talking about - I think you almost had too many good clips sprinkled in, case in point:
    9:02 HOLY DOT?!??!?! WHAT
    8:25 holy instant overhead (i need to steal this, i default to knocking my opponent full screen and spamming projectiles since I hate the feeling of missing my meaty hk and exploding 😅)
    I hope you enjoy playing Akuma when he comes out! I bet you're cracked, given that you have ultimate clears under your belt 🤯

    I really like how you connected classes to fighting game archetypes while still only covering the ones people would start the game on :D if we're not counting starting classes Gunbreaker is my shoto vote, it has enough APM to be enjoyable to a fighting game player but not so much its difficult at all, pretty straightforward to play, and has alot of tools for alot or scenarios

    Havent watched the video fully yet but i started playing FGs because of burning out on raiding, so the opposite direction. It's nice in FGs to be able to own my decisions, wins and losses, compared to the kinda "team jump-rope" design of MMOs. I enjoy both styles of play now, and it's nice to be able to move from one to the other whenever i get tired of it.

    Back in the day I didn't play MMOs. Sure I gave WoW a shot, but I couldn't get into it. Around FF14 1.0 I got into the game because I love Final Fantasy as a series, but never got around to finishing 1.0 because of school and work. Fast forward to a few years Im doing Fighting game tournaments on my off time around 2015-2019. 2020 happened and the whole Covid crapshow quarantined us all, so with more free time I started to play FF14 and 600 hours later I caught up Shadowbringer before 2021 hit. I retired from the FFC and decide to spend most of my free time playing FF14 and RPGs.

    Great video! As for PvP, it really is a completely different experience from the PvE, but I highly recommend for people to try it. As with any PvP game, it'll be tough once you start, until you get used to how things go. And this goes for any of the PvP modes. But once you grasp the hang of it, it's super satisfying. It's one of my top favorite contents in the game, and I very often don't really care about PvP in games, so this goes to show how much I enjoy it!
