      Andre the Giant vs Hulk Hogan WM3! &
      Macho Man Randy Savage(R.I.P.) vs Ricky "the Dragon" Steamboat WM3 (stole the show)!!
      Favorite Wrestler is tough, so many good ones!
      Top 7: Hulk Hogan (of course), Macho Man Randy Savage(R.I.P.), Rowdy Roddy Piper, Bret "The Hitman" Hart, & "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero (R.I.P.), CM Punk (Wish he come back, WWE sucks now), last but never least "Mick Foley" (any character he played)!!!

      The year was 1995, I was turning 8 in a few short months. At one of my regular weekend visits to the local arcade, there was a new machine in the "fighting game" section, and it happened to be WWF Wrestlemania. Despite my age, I had been raised on Mortal Kombat by my older brother and his friends, who were nearly 10 years older than me. I had come to be quite competitive with them, often winning with a come-from-behind, 3rd round, low health finish. I had to wait to try the new WWF game, as there was a line of about 4 people waiting to get a chance to topple the dude who had been on a win streak for quite some time. I watched closely and noticed the reason the guy seemed unbeatable, he was using moves I was familiar with from my MK training. I finally got the chance to test my skill against the reigning champ, and put my favorite wrestler at the time, Razor Ramon, up against his Shawn Michaels. I lost the first round, but I managed to get his health passed the halfway point. The second round I barely managed a victory, it was super close. Round 3, all or nothing. I had figured out Razor's "nobody messes with the bad guy" move, where he grabs his opponent by the ankles and precedes to slam them like he was beating dust out of an old rug. I felt the adrenaline kick in, palms sweaty and nerves near breaking point. I whooped his ass so hard that third round that I nearly had a flawless victory, he only was able to hit me twice before I was able to secure a pin. I had to pin him twice, as he had gotten a second wind on the first pinfall. I somehow found a way to use that combo meter that had been built up all round, and soon, victory was in my hands. I had knocked the champ off of his throne! He asked for a rematch, which I quickly lost due to getting overconfident and losing my burst of adrenaline at the same time. The people around the machine still gave me props for hanging in there "with the big kids" though, and to this day, this remains one of my favorite (and most vivid) memories of hanging out at the local arcade in the 90s.
      Thanks for the video and bringing this memory back to the forefront of my mind, those were great days to be a gamer!

    Acclaim also stole Midway's Mortal Kombat mechanics for Batman Forever. Always puzzled me why they attacked a partner they had made millions from like that. :S
    But I suspect the reason why the SNES version is so bad is because Nintendo were charging crazy prices for RAM chips at the time, so Acclaim squeezed the game into a 24 megabit cartridge, rather than 32 like games were heading for at the time to save money.

    • @Jenovi
      @Jenovi  5 лет назад +5

      Makes me want to do a video covering the fall out between Midway and Acclaim. PS. you're spot on about the SNES cart size. It's 24 meg.

      @@Jenovi Absolutely, that would make a great video. Lots of backstabbing going there from Acclaim, confused me too as I thought NBA JAM Extreme WAS the sequel to NBA JAM T.E. as a kid, had no knowledge of the Hangtime series... Do you know what size the Genesis/Mega Drive cart was out of curiosity?
      Also, I swear I read somewhere that Doink was chosen over Nash simply because they wanted colourful characters in the game. Though its bizarre why Diesel wasn't a boss Etc.

      I chatted with Sal DiVita a bit, but he's very... very slow to return messages. It's the one big question I also had but didn't get an answer too beyond it was not their choice, but done at the request of the WWF. I'm also with you feeling the lack of a boss is a little deflating at the end. Anyways, both the MD cart and 32X are 32mb. I always enjoy seeing what programs can achieve across two different platforms with the same file size constraints.

    This is one of those games that makes me wish a 3DO port had been created. I imagine it would fall somewhere between the PSX version and the Saturn version. I think the hardware would have been well capable of a good port, though I wonder if the 5-button controller would suffice or not.
    Also, awesome shoutout to Whang, I love his channel and his video about the endings of the characters in this game was both hilarious and surprising. It's a definite must-watch for anyone with any kind of interest in this game.
    Great video, I love these comparisons. I can't get enough of them. I'm still working my way through all of your content but I'm enjoying every minute of it. You have a great knack for in-depth analysis and attention to detail while not becoming bogged down on minutia. The best way I can describe it is like this: suppose RUclips reviews were a thing back when these games were new, instead of magazines. Your platform comparisons are literally the exact type of thing that I think all of us would have loved to watch back then.
    I get the feeling you had the same kind of passion for games that I did back then, except you owned Sega consoles while I owned Nintendo. I always envied the Sega owners despite the fact that I loved my Nintendo consoles. Back then I would have killed to have it all, but luckily now I can! It actually makes these platform comparisons all the more interesting, as sure, I can buy whatever version I want, but with so many options available it's nice to see detailed analysis to get a good idea of what version might suit me best so that I don't have to spend a whole lot of time to figure it out for myself.
    And sometimes it's actually fun to go back and experience the same games on different platforms, just to see what they were like. I've been contemplating my next console purchase. I already own a model 1 Genesis and a Saturn, but I've been really craving a Sega CD and/or 32X (the 32X is a must purchase for me, I WILL own one at some point). I already own a Dreamcast, which I got new at launch and was my first Sega console, and a Saturn that luckily fell into my hands for the outstanding price of nothing (including a bunch of games and 2 Stunners, no less), but I'd love to get a Mega SG, although that doesn't work with the 32X. And then there's the Mega SD which FPGA emulates the Sega CD hardware, sign me up. Decisions, decisions. Either way, my next delve into older console hardware is definitely leaning heavily towards Sega CD and 32X.
    Sorry for the wall of text, this video sent my brain off on a tangent.

    I own the 32X version and love it despite the 30fps. I would put it above the Saturn version for the simple fact that when the game gets busy with more characters to fight, the crowd doesn’t animate or move on the Saturn at all, meanwhile on the 32X, they still get up and cheer and move. I feel that really adds to the atmosphere and game. Just a personal preference though.

    Just found your channel and have been binge watching videos all morning. I love your definitive analysis videos and I'm really happy to see a content creator who loves the 32x as much as I do. I remember being a kid in the 90s and having the best version of certain games because I had a 32x and my friends didn't. I collect for the system now and the only game I don't have is Spiderman Web of Fire. I think the system is much better than people give it credit for and often wonder what games could have been made if Sega didn't drop support for it so soon after release. Keep up the good work. I'm definitely a fan.

    • @Jenovi
      @Jenovi  5 лет назад +1

      Thank you for the very kind comment. I'm working on a large documentary at the moment, but once that wraps I'll be back to Unreleased and Definitive Analysis covering more 32X material. Best of luck getting Web of Fire, it's really went up in price the last few years. I don't feel it's the hardest to find though, so that's a plus. I feel rather strong as stated in my Why did Sega fail video killing the 32X was a major knee jerk reaction and mistake.

    • @sega32xxx14
      @sega32xxx14 4 года назад +1

      Yeah I have a complete collection for the 32x as well minus Web of Fire because I couldn't turn down selling it for such a massive profit last year considering I picked it up on clearance. Makes me glad nowadays that I loved the 32x in the 90s, cause I have stuff like 2 unopened World Series 95s as well as a complete one since when I was grabbing all of the rest of the US releases I didn't have yet in 96/97 for just please take this prices I noticed WSB95 was not at nearly as many stores as the others, and that includes Spiderman. I'm pretty sure I only ever saw WSB 95 in 2 stores total, with Web of Fire appearing semi-regularly, just in low numbers at the locations that had it, so I just figured they must've barely pushed it out since it would be cheap to port or something. Also splurging on DarXide and FIFA 96 in 98 was so much more economical than if I had to nowadays, I mean FIFA was $6 brand new on some website, wish I got more of them haha.

    • @sega32xxx14
      @sega32xxx14 4 года назад +1

      Just for the record I collected for the 32x to play it, which is why I got rid of Web of Fire as it's one of the few games on the console that I can definitively say I'll be happy to never play again, it's just so bad. The only other game for it that I really never have an itch to play is BC Racers as it is the only other game for the platform I feel is just prohibitively not fun to play, but there isn't such a massive incentive to get rid of it like there was for a game I picked up for 7.99 that's now worth hundreds.

    6:55 - He didn't? TWO Doinks appeared at Wrestlemania 9, and at Wrestlemania 10 he wrestling in a mix tag match with Bigelow. Plus since Doink was the most "gimmicky" character, it wasn't that difficult to assume he was included to appeal to non-WWF Viewers at the time.
    As for Diesel, The game was developed in roughly mid 1993 - Nash was barely an active wrestler at that time. The game had a longer development cycle - so sure, when it was released more than a year later, Nash was champion, but they couldn't go back and change all that work. (Unlike the simple change of giving Undertaker Purple gloves). The Arcade Game came into Arcades in the Fall of 1994, Nash wouldn't win the WWF Title until Thanksgiving weekend of that year.

Looking at the final build date in the bios for the arcade release we can see it's Mid 1995 (I think July) so it clearly released in the Summer of '95. You're laying it on really thick. Even as a little kid in this era I knew it was a show - I don't know anyone that truly believed it was real. Now NWA, that looked real, but WWF, with it's cartoon version of wrestling, no one thought it was real, they just enjoyed booing bad guys and cheering good guys. Except for me, dressed up like little Joe Dirt, cheering on the Million Dollar Man and Rick Rude.

    As someone fascinated with ports of games running on hardware they have no business being on, I gotta say I actually love the Genesis port, and it may be my favorite home version. It runs well, sounds good, looks fine for the Genesis and it has all of the characters and moves (except Taker's fatality of course).
    I don't think Sculptured Software was a particularly creative group of game devs. Most of their own stuff is mediocre at best, like their WWF quadrilogy you talked about in another video. Lazy graphics, uninspired gameplay... They made cheap products on time for cheap publishers.
    But given good ressources, I do believe they did some good work. The Genesis version of Wrestlemania Arcade is great in my opinion, and If I remember correctly they faithfully ported other good Midway games to consoles. They also did Tecmo Super NBA Basketball. While it's not nearly as good as Tecmo Super Bowl, they must have given a good template and support because it's still very playable and hits a high quality mark for NES sports sims in general.

    Doink the Clown was actually at the Mania prior to the game's release for this year. At WrestleMania 10 in 1994, he teamed with Dink to face Luna Vachon and Bam Bam Bigelow. It may have been Ray Apollo instead of Matt Bourne under the costume, but it was still the Doink character.

      Jenovi Oh okay, I thought you meant the previous year's pay per view (WM X) and the following year (WM XII). I get what you were saying now. The babyface Doink character was not my favorite, but I did enjoy evil heel Doink, as Matt Bourne, who was a great wrestler -RIP. He had an awesome Summerslam 1993 match/segment in the Jerry Lawler/Bret Hart storyline.

    Odd that the Saturn version is "better" than the original Arcade. I suppose it has slight differences that come down to preference and it certainly would be more accessible IRL.
    Realistically speaking, you either want the Arcade/Saturn/DOS version for the true experience (with PS1 being slightly inferior) and the 32X version if you want the more chiptune sounds and stylized visuals.

    22:38 Acclaim didn't "allow" Midway to make a WWF game: Acclaim had the WWF license for home consoles/handhelds only while Midway had the WWF license for arcade release. This differentiation in licensing (look up the Gaming Historian's Tetris video for how granular the licensing by the platform can get) is why the arcade had the awesome WWF Superstars and WWF Wrestlefest from Technos, while the 8-bit and 16-bit consoles/handhelds had to endure Acclaim's mediocre-at-best WWF games because Acclaim did not want to pay Technos to sublicense their arcade games for console release.

      @Jenovi  5 лет назад

      First off, thank you for taking the time to comment. I can't speak for past games, and I fully understand what you're talking about. However that's not the case here. I would have to check my sources again, but I believe Acclaim held exclusive rights to make WWF licensed games for all platforms from some time in '92-'99?. Anyways, it's not just a guess and not quite what I thought going into it. The video was researched then fact-checked by people intimate with the history of the two companies.

    • @Tempora158
      @Tempora158 5 лет назад

      @@Jenovi If Acclaim also had the arcade rights, then Midway would have needed to sub-license the WWF IP from Acclaim and give credit to Acclaim in the arcade game, but Acclaim is not mentioned anywhere in the arcade game or the arcade flyer. Also, WWF European Rampage Tour was released in 1992 by Ocean on various microcomputers and MGA released several WWF portable LCD games throughout the 1990s and none of these products mention Acclaim as their licensor, lending further evidence that Acclaim's licensing only applied to consoles/handhelds.

    But you only hear them after you lose and go back to the character selection screen in 1player mode.
    It also plays in 2player mode whoever wins the match in the end and when you go back to the character select screen.
    Just thought I would clarify that up for you.

      @@Jenovi Hey man, remember to blink for the camera. Some ppl find it creepy when you stare for that long thx!!

      @@battosaijenkins946 You get my canned no blink response. :D
      I swear I blink a few times in the video! Actually, I just don’t blink very often, maybe 3-5 times a minute unless I’m thinking about it. I don’t often times have people staring into my eyes to notice though. I’ll have to try blinking a bit more as I speak in the future. On an interesting note, the average person blinks about 15 times a minute, but when on camera it increases 30-50 times a minute. So me being the "Wesley Clark" of Retro Gaming Video shows and not increasing my blinks while on camera really stands out. Appreciate the concern and sorry to creep you out. Not trying to steal a soul or anything like that.

      The PS1 version is quite a bit of fun. Controls great.

    It would have been nice if you had discussed the characters themselves. Maybe you didn’t because every character is basically the same only different animations. But as a kid I didn’t notice or care at the time
