I have an '88 240 wagon as well. I've been a 240 Volvo mechanic for 22 years, and know that an '88 is the best year for a 240 Volvo. Volvo cured the crumbling engine wiring harness for the '88 model, and the '89 and later cars had ECUs that are prone to fail. My car will out-live me.
I worked at a Volvo dealer 25 years ago and we took one in on trade that had 980000 miles on it that was all original except the obvious many sets of brake pads and tires etc and still ran great, only thing it needed was a very worn out seat and steering wheel, the steering wheel was worn almost down to the internal steel ring, amazing cars
No car has ever bested the 240 in the roof crush test, and that in spite of pillars no thicker than the distance between the eyes of the average person. No blind spots.
Not really..he needs to get serious...the cars he features with High Mileage are actually Average or low....a Toyota tundra with 4.6 v8 and 205k miles will be described as Only 205kmiles by a Vendor...the only Genuine High Mileage car is this Volvo with No dashboard 🥳..which won't get a Road Worthy Certificate in Any country...lol
Hey man, love the high mileage reviews. If you ever find yourself in Colorado, I have a 200,000 E46 ZHP track car, a 400,000 mile W123 300D Turbodiesel and a 333,000 Corolla. I'm an engineering student, and I've bought them to study wear. They'd all be great candidates for this.
I highly regret selling my Volvo 240 5 speed but it was clapped out and lowered by the previous owner. I absolutely love the way this car drives there is just nothing like it. So easy to maintain and drive, no blind spots.
Thanks for your reply , appreciate you getting back to me. I now am in to my 3rd 240 , great cars . This last one I bought for $700 has 200k miles looks great and runs great. Why would I want a expensive new car when there are plenty of 240 still around to buy.
duett 445 hey. I just saw your comment. I want to buy an old Volvo myself. Where do you find them for that price of $700? And what area do you live in? Thanks
Wonderful! My mother had a 240 Estate for 11 years between 1990 and 2001. It was a very, very solid car. I did a review of a 960 estate on my channel last month, which brought back a lot of memories!
@@HighMileageReviews, yes, my mother loved it, which is why she kept it so long. It wasn't fast, economical or particularly good to drive, but it just kept on running and had an enormous boot. The 960 was an even better car, and I really enjoyed driving the one I reviewed last month.
Great video! Yes, yes I still drive a 244 DL 1989 Volvo, automatic with over drive transmission, 260k miles, am second owner 5/2001, 141k miles, replaced trans.2006 176k miles in Berkeley, all 4 seats are great, including fabric, dashboard has 1 crack, odometer been replaced, carpeting on floor is still possible, windows, windshields are original, doing well in San Andreas, CA despite the Summer heat, air conditioning Swedish hose & expansive valve is scheduled for June, 2023, after front struts, rack & pinion axle (being replaced 4 times since 5/2012, horrible pot holes along CA highway 49), about to replace third power steering pump, oil pan gasket, right rear axle seal ... this is the fourth 240 series VOLVO I have owned and prefer the 240 Volvos than the 2995 850 GLT...the "Silver Fox" was repainted in September, 2013...looks terrific. Happy New Year 2023 to all
My 240 DL Automatic wagon is coming up on 600,000 km, and the original automatic is still working as new. Years ago we switched tire sizes, as the original 185R14 went out of production before the 240 run ended. As an aside, the gear to repair the odometer is about $10. The instrument cluster can also be repaired. Wagonmeister does them.
I love my 240dl im at just over 300k and still running strong and i had a Cherokee with over 400k... But really for any vehicle .. Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance is key... Oh and dont forget about the maintenance
Just discovered your Channel today and subscribed. Great videos and so different from anything else on the motoring front. Will notify many of your channel starting with my cousin who will love this. I just happened to be cycling through Sweden last June and there are still loads of these being driven about it was superb to see as they are becoming so rare in Scotland these days. They were massive over here. I prefer the estate variant, but I would like to have one of the real early models, from the early 70`s they were the coolest
Mine is a 92 wagon with over 500,000. Looks almost new. Original engine and transmission. Never left me stranded. Its now retired and I've rebuilt the suspension. Maybe one day an engine swap. I did have to replace the headgasket about 10 years ago.
I love my 90 240! Sure it’s a bone stock automatic but it still runs great and everything works on it. You can repair just about everything on these cars. I’ve even reflowed solder on the overdrive relay. Most other cars you just throw them away and buy another.
My 92 240 currently has 43K verifiable miles. Maybe one of the lowest examples anywhere? The odometer did break shortly after I bought in in 2014, but I fixed it within the week and didn't drive it. The repair is quite easy.
Hey , nice brick , Are you in Turbobricks? you should be, I am. and in Chicago. Gotta 240 with a supra swap still on the works. You had me cracking up at your review and nice background music!!!!
Those Volvos are some tough cars, while some of these cars are going or have surpassed, the 400,000 or the P1800, from Irv, Gordon that has passed the million miles club, dsome of the newer cars are barely around 50,000 to 100,000 those cars are awesome👍👍👍👍👍👌👌👌👌👌
Anyone who can start a car review with the phrase, "Grab yourself a meatball ..." and make it work gets a like AND a subscription from me. Great camera work and narration!
About the engine mounts, you do not have to replace them after 50k miles. That is nonsense,. I had a 240 and drove it close to 300k miles and never had to replace the motor mounts.
The accuracy of that claim should be taken with a grain of salt. My knowledge of the issue stems from what I've read on forums, and from what the owner told me he encountered through his own experience and the experiences he's heard from others.
My friend's 240 had both original mounts shear clean off at 234k on a bone stock b230f. Car was still driveable which is ludicrous, but I think they should be changed as soon as they start looking saggy.
I have a 94,000 mile 1989 740GL, second owner (since my purchase in 1993), which never was parked for any length of time... just started only driving 2,000 miles a year. Always garaged. Mostly same engine and transmission as the 240. My concern is how long I can continue to find good service if I keep it 10 or 15 years. I'm 72 now so it could be my last car. Driving skills will deteriorate over 10 years AirCond system no longer works and needs retrofitting to new coolant. Anyone know the cost for that? Top mechanics may all retire, or parts may become unavailable. Yet one can hardly sell or trade in a car that will easily go 100,000 to 200,000 more miles on same engine and transmission. Still, the vehicle doen't exactly impress the gals....
Sounds pristine! You could probably turn a few heads with something like that at one those radwood car events. Not everyday you see an old Volvo with low miles like that
Look for independent Volvo mechanics near your location that are experienced with working with Redblock engines. R134a converstions will generally cost around $200-500 dollars. Some parts are still being produced new by aftermarket companies, but there are still enough RWD Volvos on the road today to provide spare parts for the foreseeable future.

Would someone PLEASE tell me why Volvos dont rust? I have heard all kinds of ridiculous answers from people claiming that they dont rust because the owners take care of them. That's nonsense . Even well taken care of, cars rust. They ALL rust! I own a 2005 V70 with no rust whatsoever. WHY? I rarely wash it. It has 200, 000 miles and it is rust free. Oh and I live in upstate NY
@@trigsretromotors The only rusting Volvos I have ever seen have had body panels replaced due to accident, heavily modified bodies or the rare floor pan problems. Aside from that, whether it's a 240, V70, 740 or whatever...they are always clean. Even resting in a junk yard for years they're still clean
Volvo began galvanizing most of their metal body panels from the factory with a zinc coating in the mid-1980s. It doesn't prevent rust entirely, but it delays the spread of rust significantly compared to cars without the same treatment.
@@nyctereute9118 Thank you for that reply. I keep hearing nonsense things like, "oh Volvos rust just as much as all other cars" and "they just wash them and take care of them better" stuff. I live in upstate NY and I assure you, we dont give a crap about washing our cars half the time and if 40+ year old Volvos are cruising around rust free, there has to be an answer other than washing and care. It has to be something else. Plus, I keep hearing other people talk about Swedish steel.

Hey you asked, and yes no A.C. in Las Vegas NV.
The speedometer works, however the odometer is broken. Mileage was estimated through the numerous service records from previous owners alongside some basic calculations using routine driving habits and logging mileage on longer trips.
Had 4 bricks so far and while being nowhere as reliable as everyone tells you they are, they do go sideways and that's all that counts. Pretty damn comfortable to drive too, once you've broken the stupid lumbar supports. Damn, I gotta get another 240. Turbobricking is like a drug.
they have many faults, but we all know them since 30 years, and are always prepared, to fuel pump relais, motor mount, blower motor, and flametrap, every good volvo owner know these faults
@@casparpolitman Yeah, exactly. They have their issues. Swedish kids always like to say that they're more reliable than all the other cars, but that's probably because they haven't owned any other cars. I like them anyways, trying to buy a 245 right now..

Even well taken care of, cars rust. They ALL rust! I own a 2005 V70 with no rust whatsoever. WHY? I rarely wash it. It has 200, 000 miles and it is rust free. Oh and I live in upstate NY
I can assure you, UK Volvos rust!
They rub the leftover grease from their meatballs on any exposed metal
It's a Swedish tank and build to last. It's thirsty but nothing compared to American V8's from this decade.
9l/100 km for a 70ies car with 116 horsepower that is as sleek as a brick, is pretty reasonable.
The person who dislikes this drives a Kia Sportage yuk.
84 DL COUPE I miss you, I've tried to fill the void for many years. 87 DL Sedan was beautiful (AC WORKED GR8) tried to get my oldest to drive it, ex-wife said no?! (BIOLOGICAL VESSEL RECALLED).
The "Diplomat" 97? 940 wagon GOLD FINGER was a SWEDISH Diplomats car in CA. Car phone, alarm, embassy stickers, lots of bells and whistles. Finally the 93 245, 5spd. Volvo Corp Lease 1 Drive, then owner once lease was up. 287K on the Odometer Certified (100k, 200k, 300k Badged. Verifiable 387K, repaired stuck trip odometer and 25t gear replaced. I'm of the opinion high milage 240's are Autistic Swedish Speeking Adopted Adult Children, and their owners fear an empty nest enabling their long life via the multiple support groups, ipd, turbo bricks, Volvo forums, RUclips Volgers, and a few NASA engineers tricks & tips, countless hours of finding out why the fuel system relays are equal to AAA Card. Hey you asked, and yes no A.C. in Las Vegas NV.
If the speedo broke, how can you claim those miles?
The speedometer works, however the odometer is broken. Mileage was estimated through the numerous service records from previous owners alongside some basic calculations using routine driving habits and logging mileage on longer trips.
sry for my english ! what the wheel ? i have 240 volvo and i need this ! russia ( moscow)
Oz racing superleggera
Volvo disease. Even though I have three 97 850 wagons. I just bought a 940 turbo, ahhhhh rwd!!!!
bro, fix that dash, You're insulting the whole volvo community by driving your car like that
Meh. This is just a baby. Mine is a 92 wagon. Over 500,000
Motor mounts cost next to nothing and dont take much more time than figuring out how to ratchet strap the thing in
Just replace the motor mounts 🙂
this guy is a try hard regular car review
What's spare tire doing on the roof? Makes this classic car look ugly.
luxury.............. hahahah
Can't live without it
Lol. How many engine and transmission rebuilds have you been through. Pos
Supposedly none. Like I said in the video, original engine and trans
They really are a blast. I'd still say they're more reliable than most cars on the road, but they aren't without their faults
they have many faults, but we all know them since 30 years, and are always prepared, to fuel pump relais, motor mount, blower motor, and flametrap, every good volvo owner know these faults
@@casparpolitman Yeah, exactly. They have their issues.
Swedish kids always like to say that they're more reliable than all the other cars, but that's probably because they haven't owned any other cars.
I like them anyways, trying to buy a 245 right now..
Had 23 of them, 230 cars in all, they are nr 3 after Volvo 940 and toyota corolla .
@@nissehult8552 the 940 had the same engine? Are the toyota celica also reliable?
WHERE DO YOU GET THE PURPLE DOME LIGHT
The black market, I imagine
