Finally some appreciation for high mileage! 🪐👍🏻 Couple of months ago I sold my 2013 Jaguar XF which had 325,000 Miles on the clock, but I still have my 2011 VW Caddy with 368,000 Miles 👍🏻 I also know of a Volvo approaching 1,000,000 Miles, and is 2008 Model Year, but is a bit larger and has a few more wheels than John...
I bought a Mk3 Mondeo 2.2 TDCI Titanium 134K on the clock for £600, constant limpmode.. Turned out to be the Turbo actuator. Car runs great now +12 month MOT . Fatastic!.
volvo is so great. i just sold my volvo s60 2,4 patrol that got almost 1mil km on the clock, and it drove like one with 200k km. they are just great and safe cars
Once knew a taxi driver he did the nightshift and his wife the days the car never got cold racked up some serious mileage and the exhaust was like new .
Greetings from long time fans. Delighted to see you still at it. Points for wearing a spotless white shirt for inspecting under Old John. Btw, while doing bump-stops et all, throw on some new Bilstein B4s. Or B6s to nudge the handling a mite closer to sporty. They will even match your shirt! No the B6s don't wreck the ride, they respond so fast to bumps, quite civilized. Trip challenge ideas: Go though Sweden and attend a huge Volvo club event. Bet you have the highest miler. Then continue on a bit and be chauffeur for Mika Hakkinnenn for a few fascinating days in Finland. Do bring your ex-MOT pal along. He's a great guy, and can fix things enroute. My most cherished quote from you? Racing line bro! While vacuum cleaning. All the best from Canada west.
I have owned Volvo S80’s for 18 years so far and can say that the 2005/6 diesel models are highly reliable, safe, comfortable and a great buy. I have only spent £100 on repairs the whole time. I recently went on a 2,000 mile round trip to Italy with utmost confidence and would do so again.
Great content again Alex! It just shows you were the main person at carthrottle but at the same time have great chemistry with ethan etc over there making their videos just as good. Love volvos too 🤙
the thing with sticking an aluminium plate over a mahoosive MOT failing rust hole is that half the battle with welding repairs is jacking the car up and getting under it with enough access to patch the hole. By the time you've done all that you might as well weld it.
My dad had two S80's both of which where silver. The first had a new engine because he drove don a flooded Road and got stuck. His second was a duel fuel, which I reversed into a tree on his birthday when it was new! Bringing back memories.
Man is this car impressive! I love high mileage heroes. You actually make them very interesting, starting with the Skoda. I hope you fix this Volvo well, including the rust spots. Despite its mileage, I'm sure once fixed, it could soldier on quite some time.
1:20 aaah proper teaser there, for the new AWESOME project car cant wait!!!! i tried like 10 times to stop at the exact frame, even with .25 speed it was tricky
I replaced the wheels with the Arikis wheels. S80 is a big car that just doesn't drive like a big car. I loved it... Very reliable. Small maintenance issues often.
Happy to join with our BMW 335d with 530.000 km’s. All original except the dampers and springs, oil, dics and pads and a turbo hose. HG and turbo’s have never been replaced!! Running 720Nm and 336 hp..
If you never started your own channel, I probs would've never found out about Taylor. And what a gem he is, with his little x-legs and his short arms and his tat and impeccable chemistry with short-ar, I mean Alex.
My parents had a 145 from new and kept it for 30 years. It's probably still in a collector's Swedish car collection in Wiltshire. They followed up with a 2004 V70 that's still in the family although dad has passed away and mum has stopped driving due to her age. Looked after, they will go on almost for ever. Irv Gordon's P1800 has outlasted him
Can Taylor set up a Pre-mot facility where he can put all of his 'know how' to use on cars that might need a bit of 'extra care' to pass. awesome as usual Alex!
IMHO, considering the driving this S80 has done, the fact that it’s on a 2nd engine doesn’t seem like a turn off when it comes to the car and how often it’s been racking in the miles. Like the case with some other fairly modern cars with this much heavy driving, engines will have to have been replaced at some point in the car’s life. I get that quite some other certain 80’s or so cars stay on the original transmission or engine, but newer cars with so much driving will eventually have something major that will need replacing. I believe that doesn’t discredit Alex’s S80 from the accomplished 700k+ miles…
@Shinei Sure thing, people can feel differently to this matter. I'm saying as long as the engine and the rest of the car has been properly taken care of, being reasonably invested in the car, then that doesn't discredit a car from its accomplished range of mileage. Should we dig deep into the history of Alex's S80, Around the 3:44 mark, Alex explains why this particular S80 had to receive a second engine and only to find out that it was all because a rock that came in through the grill and smashed a lot of bits of the engine. With an event like that, there is a slim chance of something like that happening. Had that rock not come through and obliterated the engine, who knows how much mileage the original engine would've racked up. Probably quite as high if maybe a little behind this...
2 friends and I bought a 1999 V70 for 500eu with 415.000 km / 257.000 miles for holidays. Board computer, cruise, heated seats, AC. Just AC ain't working, yet. Cheap because they are expensive to maintain by garages. But I'm handy and so far we used it in 2 holidays and around 8000 kms later, no issues.
High Mileage gettogether/cruise/race such a cool idea! Will probably be a lot of surprises, and a really great tip for everyone that wants a car that could be reliable...
Such a gesture to call the car John. The 2.5 TDI engine is.bombproof as long as the belts are replaced as this engine has two belts, one for the timing and one for the diesel pump on the engine. Also, being an Tdi engine you can run the car on pre veggie oil from like Asda and Teso, gives more power and cleaner exhausts but go for sunflower oil as it's the best oil to use. Or mix it 50/50. I had a 1998 S70 TDI between 2008 and 2014 and had rund 240k on the car. Unfortunately the second water pump failed and wrecked the engine.. so car got scrappes. Lovely ro see an S80 in better condition as the S80 mk1 was built and designed before Ford. Same goes for the XC90.
@@GentilsGarage car I had was owned by an American guy working at Prestwick airport so Mainetance was up to scratch as I bought it 2nd hand at 120k on the clock. I replaced the belts at 180k and all the bits but for some reason the belt had been grinding so got replaced 1 years later. After that all was good but then the water pump failed by basically throwing the belt off and sudden death. Loved that car with it's turbo kick the few times to had to floor it lol 😂 Think it's 80k between the belts isn't it?
Great story and video, due respect. You will, I suspect find a lot of friends on line if you cover old, high mileage Volvo's. It's a bit of a thang' among the cognoscenti and you do it so well.
Okay, I've decided, my next car needs to be a Volvo from the 2000s... from what I've seen on Car Throttle and here, they really built these things for eternity, just like their older cars, but these are still relatively modern and comfortable, and easy to get parts for. And they don't rust as bad as most Japanese cars from that era, like my Lancer...
Ooh a high mileage meet up, hopefully my Beemer is high enough and it’s on a weekend. 🤞🏻 Also great video, always loved Volvos. The bit with the hammer was so funny with the rust hole too, literally lol’d. 😂😂
I had a 2001 S80 T6 and it was a pretty great car, despite the fragile GM automatic transmission. Very comfortable and ample power from the twin turbo inline six.
I've got this exact same car (2005 diesel) in black. 130,000 miles without any problems. The only issue is the CD player which doesn't work (the radio works fine) and they're impossible to find. I even contacted Volvo HQ in Gothenburg and they couldn't help either. A simple MP3 player sorts out that problem though. One of the nicest cars I've ever owned. It's also the sought-after manual version (most are autos). It's comfortable, reasonably quick, quiet and gets an average of 46 mpg.
Love these Alex vids with Taylor; his laughs are infectious and the interaction between you guys is great to watch (the bonnet mounted wall switch still being an all-time classic).
Just to clarify though, if you cover anything up and it looks too dodgy then they can just refuse to test it, so anyone watching don't rely on it too much 😁
Its a 2.5tdi (ael) 5 cyl engine. Same engine is used in Audi a6 (c4),from '94-97... Later,Volvo developed its own 5 cylinder,2.4d engine,d5. Both engines are very durable.
I love the cars on this channel, but it's a chore watching Alex these days, as he's just doing the knob thing on hyperdrive. It's so contrived. Eg: 2:49 .... and the John Counter thing. Yes we get it; Alex planned to say John lot's of times and there'd be a counter in the corner. It's like Top Gear 2001 for 9 year olds. Just give it a break, be a tad more natural and focus on the cars.
They all go at the bottom of the rear door shuts. Muck gets in from the wheel arches & rusts 'em from the inside out. I've had a fair few in for that bit repairing. Once you start poking, it gets to be a lot more than what you can see. That light underside rust needs treating too - once it starts it rapidly accelerates. That sill you knocked a hole in another regular repair we do... same cause - muck from the wheel-well gets trapped by the plastics. Oddly, it's always been a Volvo achilles heel, going back to really early ones.
Always check the left side for rust. As a kid my neighbour had a Volvo and tbh it was a tank. It was A reg and the cars reg were starting to go into different numbers and he still had it. Ex military guy and he kept that thing in pristine condition. I bet it is still running now.
Bro, kudos to Gentil's Garage, he maintains that car really well. That is a solid car for £400, obviously, it needs to be repaired a bit but you know, it doesn't look like a higher mileage than 200k!
My dad used to own an almost identical S80. It was used to drive around a regional head of government. Had all kind of funny gimmicks, like a corded phone in the back, fridge, special lighting to work. As a kid sitting in the back of that was amazing.
I’m glad to see an s80 being given attention on a bigger channel. They are a fairly unloved platform. But generally I like them. Avoiding the 6 cylinders usually avoids most of the issues that become costly. Mine was a NL car for 16 years and not a spec of rust on the chassis. It’s now in the states in the south where it avoids salt.
S80s and other Volvos from that time period require a lot of maintenance to keep going. My friend’s mom bought an S80 with 25k on the engine. By 80k it needed so much stuff that she fixed it and traded it in on a Toyota Avalon. Makes since that this S80 is on its second engine. Respect to the previous owner. If you can keep an old S80 going you can keep anything on the road.

Fatastic!.
I truly love the high mileage content. These cars still need love ❤️
volvo is so great. i just sold my volvo s60 2,4 patrol that got almost 1mil km on the clock, and it drove like one with 200k km. they are just great and safe cars
what happened to this?

Once knew a taxi driver he did the nightshift and his wife the days the car never got cold racked up some serious mileage and the exhaust was like new .
Certainly getting the feels that Alex is the British hoovie with Taylor being the wizard…. Just with less budget… and I like it :)
Still waiting for an update on this
I have owned Volvo S80’s for 18 years so far and can say that the 2005/6 diesel models are highly reliable, safe, comfortable and a great buy.
Alex you're amazing and one of my favourite RUclipsrs, keep up the great work mate
You deserve the best
My dad had two S80's both of which where silver. The first had a new engine because he drove don a flooded Road and got stuck. His second was a duel fuel, which I reversed into a tree on his birthday when it was new! Bringing back memories.
only 1 minute in and very happy with the unit conversions :) hope thats here to stay. love the videos Alex. Keep it going ;)
Man is this car impressive! I love high mileage heroes. You actually make them very interesting, starting with the Skoda. I hope you fix this Volvo well, including the rust spots. Despite its mileage, I'm sure once fixed, it could soldier on quite some time.
Glad to see the Volvo being loved and appreciated rather than scrapped and forgotten
Love that single frame at 1:20
I was actually awestruck seeing the under the bonnet shot the first time round, that’s super clean
All thanks to Gentil's Garage!
Thanks, I did the best I could
1:20 aaah proper teaser there, for the new AWESOME project car cant wait!!!!
i tried like 10 times to stop at the exact frame, even with .25 speed it was tricky
This is actually the first time i see an s80 with this much rust though.
Love the series alex and taylor! You guys are genius together 🤣
I replaced the wheels with the Arikis wheels. S80 is a big car that just doesn't drive like a big car. I loved it... Very reliable. Small maintenance issues often.
Here in Sweden this era of Volvos is regarded as being exceptionally well rust proofed.
how about the P80 (particularly '98-'00 70 series, for rust proofed aspect?
@@18_rabbitAlso as good as the V70n . Many still on the road here today in Sweden despite the winter salted roads.
Irv Gordon's P1800 has outlasted him
yank here. Grandparents had new 142 which i inherited though didn't last long, valves or somesuch. was mint literally and low miles, gorgeous.
Can Taylor set up a Pre-mot facility where he can put all of his 'know how' to use on cars that might need a bit of 'extra care' to pass.
awesome as usual Alex!
Alex I love this high mileage hero……. And I love the fact your basically not forgetting your roots with this video like the last one.
Killed it when he revealed it's on a second engine.
Despite the oil leak, John seems like it's he's great condition.
High Mileage gettogether/cruise/race such a cool idea! Will probably be a lot of surprises, and a really great tip for everyone that wants a car that could be reliable...
should I have kept my mouth shut about that red m3 at 1:20 ? hmmmmmmmm
I had both belts, tensioner and water pump replaced in January at a Volvo dealership.
Loved that car with it's turbo kick the few times to had to floor it lol 😂
Think it's 80k between the belts isn't it?
@@VinDieselS70 yes, i think it is 80k or 10years.
Great story and video, due respect. You will, I suspect find a lot of friends on line if you cover old, high mileage Volvo's. It's a bit of a thang' among the cognoscenti and you do it so well.
John confirms that a car can travel far if it only service it on its regular intervals...
Taylor was just on Carwow 👏👌
nice e46 imola red you have
Around to 1 min 20 mark if you’re quick enough hey I was just about to comment myself 😂😂
@@Hello-ww5bi it helps if you slow down the video to 0,25
@@Wulf573 exactly what I did 😂 Alex at 0.2 sounds a bit weird
@@Wulf573 if on the computer you can job frame by frame using the J and L keys
Another top video. Looking forward to this series!
Yes please buy Volvo. It is safe car, and you can have lots of fun there. It is also reliable, so you can tune it.
I purchased a Volvo S60 T5 built 2003. Modern audi and bmw can't keep up with it and it turns more heads
Same like me😁 2001 t6 2.8 twin turbo..but for now got much problem head gasket problem and of course abs dstc much error code to solve it🤦🏻♂️
I've got this exact same car (2005 diesel) in black. It's comfortable, reasonably quick, quiet and gets an average of 46 mpg.
what came of this? looks like it never got a MOT looking at the data base
Volvos are luxurious, powerful, unique and reliable. Why upgrade to new when these old classics are absolutely classy cars
My old car is still alive :) Glad to hear you've the current custodian Alex. Feel free to reach out if you want to know any of its history
It still has plenty of life in it indeed.
If you're doing 100k miles per year, that's 360 or so average per day ..... serious commitment on our roads there, Sir.
volvos are great,expecially older ones.My old v40 is now at 450 000 kms still running strong.my '05 xc90 D5 is @350 000kms.
... and it was never seen again. Never got its MOT.
scrapped now sadly
Love these Alex vids with Taylor; his laughs are infectious and the interaction between you guys is great to watch (the bonnet mounted wall switch still being an all-time classic).
What happens next ? Is the MOT passed ?
I believe they’re planning to take it to Norway together with a high mileage E46 and miles the Škoda.
ex volvo owner here. remove the rocker covers and check for rust. buy a rocker panel and a quater panel and start welding.
Love the channel. Keep up the good work what a nice way to remember John!! looking forward to a high mileage event !!
I'm so glad your doing another high mileage car series after miles the skoda octavia, you gotta love a high mileage car
That definitely doesn't look like 700k+ miles 😂Looking forward to this high mileage event
The D5 is an inline five diesel from Volvo. S70/V70 and earlier Volvos used VW diesels from the LT van.
Just to clarify though, if you cover anything up and it looks too dodgy then they can just refuse to test it, so anyone watching don't rely on it too much 😁
Love these videos. Seeing a normal sized bloke like Taylor next to Akex shows how small Alex is.
what happend to this volvo??
Just give it a break, be a tad more natural and focus on the cars.
yep. OTT
Love the episodes with Taylor, a total genuine dude
Love the little tease at 1:20 👌😂
Bro, kudos to Gentil's Garage, he maintains that car really well.
My daily has 782k miles. An Old Renault 19 with a 1.8 8 valve MPI with 113hp and 26 years old
I’m glad to see an s80 being given attention on a bigger channel. They are a fairly unloved platform. But generally I like them. Avoiding the 6 cylinders usually avoids most of the issues that become costly. Mine was a NL car for 16 years and not a spec of rust on the chassis. It’s now in the states in the south where it avoids salt.
Awesome to see theses cars with such high mileage. Never heard of a GM car with that kind of high mileage.
