Thats one of the rare 2,3L B234F 16V engines, a little harder to get parts for, as the 2,3L 8V engines are much more common. Got my Volvo the same way. Sat in a yard also for nearly 10 years: a 740 sedan, also with the 16V B234F engine. We filled the gas tank, cleaned the spark plugs, used some starter fluid, and it started right away. Drove it on its own power to the garage a few miles away. I used it for 6 years, until the rust finally won. Wonderful car.
That is the most bush mechanic shit ive seen in a whiiiile rofl I was thinking this would lever fucking work the timing would be all wrong but I guess as long as the petrol settled on top of the valves the engine didnt care much. Kudos 1
What ever you do with it, make it go faster. Here in Sweden, most of these are now turned into "(class) A-Tractors - basically the Swedish version of "sans permit"-vehicles for kids 16 years or older, to drive before they can have a drivers licence and drive a real car, meaning the "A-Tractors are only allowed to have a top speed of 30 km/h (18.64114mph). They are the curse of the Swedish country roads and I hate every signle one of them - to compansate this, please make this Volvo go FASTER than it normally did, instead of the agonizing opposite. Thank you!
I dont know if youll read this considering how many comments there are. But I just want to advice you since Ive worked for Volvo 15 years. Theres a relay on the coolant expansion tank, that relay grounds the injectors. Its a very common issue that the soldering goes bad in that relay, I could bet money that that relay is your issue. You can open it and resolder it, or you can get a new one. That is where Id start.
A point I haven't seen anyone else comment if you guys haven't gotten it going yet, my 740 along with a ton of others had an issue with the radio supression relay, it controls the injectors, if it goes bad you'd still have ignition but no fuel injection. Your crank sensor definitely works because I had that issue as well and it cuts spark too. If not the radio supression relay then it's your wiring and I would just try to find a 740 in the wrecker with a clean harness that you can pull for cheap to get that turd running lol
Alex, please as a project get this car an MOT! Do it to inspire everyone with an abandoned car to get them back on the road! Watching CT videos in past helped me save my X5 as it inspired me to give it a go!
One of my dads friends had/have a truly perfect 740, when they're in properly good condition it's a really good looking car. He's a mechanic and it was essentially in new condition the last time I saw it.

Love to see some UK revival content. Big fan of Vice Grip, Junkyard Digs etc. Would love to see more of this, doesn't matter how old and crappy the motors are.
You remember the Top Gear 'Source of the Nile' episode? Those campervan conversions in the estates were genuinely brilliant. Do something like that, and take it on a roadtrip.
Loving this content! Its all well and good seeing cars that have sat in Texas never seeing rain springing back to life but the UK is HARD in cars that sit and I wanna see you rescue these shitboxes
Sweet video Alex, I really love these sort of videos with cars coming back to life after sitting for years and have done a couple revivals myself. Would love to see more of these from you in the future! Also it is much easier to do with older carbureted engines so you're not fighting electronics!
I think you need to go banger racing Alex! This is the perfect car for Unlimited Back to Basics Bangers at Aldershot Raceway, next meeting being Sunday 10/7/2022 @ 12pm - Really easy to build - strip the interior out, add an H frame cage, seatbelt the bonnet and off you go, plus, it's slightly less contact!
The b230 is one of the greatest engines, specially with the Porsche designed 16 valve. The head flows magnificently, 600whp is just a matter of large enough of a turbo and booze as fuel.
The 16 valve 740 engines are a good thing. The heads were designed by Cosworth I believe and they were a pretty solid design. 150+ BHP. Bolt a TD04 blower to the side and run it as a low pressure turbo set up and you have the ultimate boxy drift mobile.
Dont scrap the car whatever you do, plenty of people out there after parts from the 700 series volvo, just brought a volvo 940 myself Highly recommend selling as a breaker at the end of your volvo adventure 👍
For the records, we've had when I was a kid a super rare 740 estate TURBO 16 valve that manys think it didn't even exists...if you find it now, it is worth 20 k...that car was an absolutely undestructible monster, apart from its archenemy the "lambda error"
Sweet memories! I saved a 1990 745 GLE 16V from the wrecker once. I was scavenging for parts for my 360 GLT when I found it. Asked the wrecker if I could have it if I managed to get it running. I only had to buy the battery he supplied me with. I drove it off the yard that day! 350k on the clock and it drove like a dream.
Funny stuff. Keep em coming 😉 Suggestion for future episodes: Make it run properly, strip the whole moldy interior down to bare metal, put a couple of bucket seats and head to curborough-ring for some shannanigans 😉
Check the radio suppression relay underhood: it's responsible for firing the injectors and when it goes bad you'll have spark and no fuel. It's a little 4-pin affair that's pretty easy to check/replace.
Love this and the previous Volvo video. I had a 1984 240 gl that I maintained to the point I could weld, and fix anything on it. I put a camaro Flowmaster dual exhaust on it, a massive ram air through the grill to a k&n cold air intake. A turbo off a turbo version(on top of the 2.5 4 banger), intercooler, and 4" dual dtm(style) stainless exhaust pipes. It was Volvo gold, I had em spray the same color, but with metal flake in it. 875,945 original mile when I gave it to my brother in law. He ran another 100,000 miles, with me maintaining it. Then we did some drag races with it, with a nitrous kit. 10.75 quarter mile in a million ton brick. He did crash it though, and we replaced a Wing, light and the bonnet(I am American but I am trying mates!!) And it was fine. Another crash at 1million 204,000 and it was done.
I really want so see you get a shitbox and make a genuine race car out of it (like a little Citroen C1 or something), I think that would be such a cool series
740 GLE 16V, only a few of those left and the 16V engine is great. If you keep it, make sure you do the timing belt and replace the oil pump drive gear bolt as it fails, throwing the belt off and causing pistons to give the valves a high 5. It was a TSB from Volvo that got missed sometimes, just replace that bolt with a 10.9 one! And if you don't keep it, I'm in Bristol and it's look stunning next to my broken 240 estate in the driveway... Just don't tell my other half!

Kudos 1
Love Alex + Gareth action. Dynamic duo
Thank you!
Hell yes love seeing Gary in the videos
I dont know if youll read this considering how many comments there are. But I just want to advice you since Ive worked for Volvo 15 years. Theres a relay on the coolant expansion tank, that relay grounds the injectors. Its a very common issue that the soldering goes bad in that relay, I could bet money that that relay is your issue. You can open it and resolder it, or you can get a new one. That is where Id start.
Keep up the good work Alex! Love an old motor that’s been stuck in a field for years!
11:45 exactly the man that springs to mind when you say volvo 740 estate owner. I love him.
Love Gareth in videos with you cause it's chaos and control. Hilarious to see
The videos with Gareth are really fun. Hopefully with this new channel, we'll see more of him.
I have never wanted to see a car fully restored to factory more then this one....... Even the bloody 500k Skoda....... Volvos are just the kings.
Alex, please as a project get this car an MOT! Do it to inspire everyone with an abandoned car to get them back on the road! Watching CT videos in past helped me save my X5 as it inspired me to give it a go!
I love how Garret matches Alex’s crazy energy.
One of my dads friends had/have a truly perfect 740, when they're in properly good condition it's a really good looking car. He's a mechanic and it was essentially in new condition the last time I saw it.
I REALLY love this car. I’ve always wanted a Volvo. Put the money into restoring it, it will make a really great family vehicle!! Please just restore it
There's nothing like a Volvo estate, love 'em!
You can't beat a old volvo it's reminds me of my old step dad just gone he's loved them there thanks
Yesss im obsesed with my volvo 940 and I believe everyone else should have an old volvo, pls keep it!!
I have a similar model 740 saloon which was sat in a garden 24 years. I used to walk past it on the way to school as a kid. I now own the car and it’s my daily. Only needed fresh fuel and a fuel pump and she drove right out the garden!
I've heard of 'wasted spark ignition', but never 'wasted injection ignition' before.
Kudos for getting it to run-ish.
Loving this new RUclips channel way better than car throttle and new top gear
Yes Alex, been waiting for a British version of will it start for years and now it’s here with a couple of absolute legends, class video as always mate, loving the content, nice variety
oh my god. The 16v redblock is an absolute machine
Learned to drive in one (mostly), my dad had an '86 version. I loved it. Remember my sister at the wheel, at the time she was 3. Cheers.
Love to see some UK revival content. Big fan of Vice Grip, Junkyard Digs etc. Would love to see more of this, doesn't matter how old and crappy the motors are.
I could watch Alex and Gareth muck about with old cars for hours
We love old Volvos Alex! Keep making videos like this
You remember the Top Gear 'Source of the Nile' episode? Those campervan conversions in the estates were genuinely brilliant. Do something like that, and take it on a roadtrip.
This is the content we all need !!!!!!!!
Loving this content! Its all well and good seeing cars that have sat in Texas never seeing rain springing back to life but the UK is HARD in cars that sit and I wanna see you rescue these shitboxes
This is a great car it has a really strong engine for a turbo conversion and make reliable 350/400 hp
Gareth is the MAN!!!!!!
The b230 is one of the greatest engines, specially with the Porsche designed 16 valve.
The head flows magnificently, 600whp is just a matter of large enough of a turbo and booze as fuel.
Videos with Gareth are the best 😁
The 16 valve 740 engines are a good thing. The heads were designed by Cosworth I believe and they were a pretty solid design. 150+ BHP. Bolt a TD04 blower to the side and run it as a low pressure turbo set up and you have the ultimate boxy drift mobile.
Dont scrap the car whatever you do, plenty of people out there after parts from the 700 series volvo, just brought a volvo 940 myself
Highly recommend selling as a breaker at the end of your volvo adventure 👍
the vibes are immaculate on this channel, good job
This content is right up my alley! I just picked up a 940 turbo that had been sitting for a bit and it made 5 hours home!!
The beginning where they’re just messing around and hitting each other with nettles is seriously how every project goes with your friends around.
For the records, we've had when I was a kid a super rare 740 estate TURBO 16 valve that manys think it didn't even exists...if you find it now, it is worth 20 k...that car was an absolutely undestructible monster, apart from its archenemy the "lambda error"
Yeah bro, drift build 100%% start the engine strip down the car weld the diff and let the party begin 🥳🥳🥳
If this becomes the Alex and Gareth show I'm here for it
Funny stuff. Keep em coming 😉
Suggestion for future episodes: Make it run properly, strip the whole moldy interior down to bare metal, put a couple of bucket seats and head to curborough-ring for some shannanigans 😉
This right now became my favorite RUclips channel, definitely 🥰😍
Cant wait to see this beast running.
