I love picnic quilts. When my 4 sons were little we had a kingsize bedspread someone gave us and It served us well for many years. I have a new Continental M7 Janome, and material and picnic quilts are what I plan on making for my younger friends.
Jenny, I want to thank you for teaching me how to quilt. I had a massive grand mall seizure 7yrs ago that had me in a state of blackness for 10 days while in the hospital. They didn't know if I would even live for a few days. My insurance didn't let me stay in the hospital longer than 10 days so my doctor told my husband that he could put me in a care facility or take me home and just wait to see if I would wake up from my "veggie state". So he took me home. Slowly I did wake up asking poor Don the same questions over & over again every few minutes, driving him crazy. One day I was looking in the mirror and I realized thaI didn't even recognize my own face looking back at me. It took several months before I came out of it to remember some of the things that I use to do. Like sewing! It was now July, the seizure was the end of March. My husband had given me an I pad for Christmas but because of all that had happened to me I had no clue how to use it. One day Don set it all up for me on RUclips to watch some sewing channels, to keep my mind busy. Missouri Star Quilt Company came up and to say the least "I was hooked on guilting". You became my mentor who recharged my mind & taught me how to quilt. Which brought me out of that "veggie state". Watching you was challenging my brain to remember & to learn how to do, once again, the thing that were so easy and even so natural to me at one time that seem to be so long ago. You taught me one stitch at time to be, some what "me" again, and it felt so good! By the end of September I had learned how to drive again and the fabric store & quilting hope were just a couple of miles away. So.... guess where I was when I wasn't looking at RUclips watching you quilt. Quilting is a whole different world than sewing and I fell in love with it, with Missouri Star Quilt Company and with you Jenny. I know that everyone who watches you absolutely loves you like their friend, teacher, Mom, Daughter or Sister. Jenny, I consider you all of the above including therapist! Thank you for introducing to this fun world of quilting🤗🥰🧵❤ Linda Snow Camas, WA
What a story, Linda! Thanks so much for sharing, and glad we could be a part of your recovery from such an ordeal. We do hope to see some of your creations soon, too!
It is inspiring to see a display of "show quilts." But I am with you on this. I don't make quilts that are meant to hang in a museum or sit on a shelf. I always give away a quilt with the hope that it will be taken on a picnic, or used to make a blanket fort, or wrapped around someone who has a fever. My goal is that the quilts I make have a long, useful life and add to the happiness of people I love. Quilts can be like the people who make them: more beautiful as they show age and wear and service. You just have to open your eyes to that kind of beauty.
Jenny you have the loveliest family! We are all a close family too. Michael J. Fox summed it up best. "Family isn't everything. It's the ONLY thing". Hugs to all the Doan gang and your extended MSQC familly too!
What a wonderful idea, Jenny!! Their 'adventures' with their quilt will certainly begin with its' creation......from mother and grandmother!!!!! HOW AWESOME IS THAT!! AND what a BEAUTIFUL place to start the memories!!♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Congratulations to your grandson and his new wife. May they spend many happy years on that picnic quilt! Love the wonky stars sashing on this strip quilt. It definitely gives it a “fresh” attitude! Thanks for sharing it! 💕
Congratulations to Isaac and Aisling - wishing you a lifetime of happiness 💕 Love this quilt, particularly in the blue and white - so cute! Love the idea of giving a picnic quilt for weddings, so thoughtful. Xx
Congratulations to your grandson and his new wife. Praying they have many happy years together. I love this quilt. I think it would make a great QOV quilt. Hope your day is wonderful.
Great idea! I'm always looking for new Quilt of Valor patterns and this one will be perfect. I think I will make it with 2 borders to make it slightly bigger.
I just finished this pattern after beginning it almost 2 years ago & setting it aside. The wonky stars terrified me! They didn't have to but I had used them in a different pattern (Roadblock) and I just couldn't get the hang of it. Because the fabric screamed "masculine possibility" I decided to not opt for the wonky stars and to use the leftover pieces from the strip tube cuts and made them into 4-1/2 inch 6-color "wonky squares". I am so pleased with the finished quilt top and it will be a great gift for one my nephews. Thanks Jenny for another amazing quilt pattern & instruction.
One of the many things I enjoy about MSQC tutorials is that we see the entire process. All too often, tutorials will show the materials, but then they whip out an already pieced block. I much prefer the way these tutorials are designed. I want to say Thank You for all the valuable information :)
Before my son got married I had made him a beach quilt and his girlfriend a park/picnic quilt. They are now married and still have the quilts in their cars and use them all the time. I've never worried about them getting used or dirty since they were made to be used and enjoyed. I love this pattern so might have to make a new on for the grand kids to use.
Gosh looked at the beautiful quilt and said to my self, you don't have the patients to make those stars. So glad I watched to the end. I would love to make them, easy peasy. Thank so much for your video Jenny. Darlene
Congrats to your Grandson & new Granddaughter-in-Law. I love their new picnic quilt!!! Another homerun, Jenny! This would also make a GREAT Man Cave Quilt. MSQC ROCKS! Lindsay, Sacramento❣
I don't have any grandkids old enough to get married yet, but this is a great idea Jenny!!! I loved the blue Quilt and I loved the one in Yellow/Grey that was featured for the video. This is a GREAT idea....for newlyweds!
Congrats to your grandson and his new love. I hope they have many many years of happiness together. That quilt is gorgeous and I can see it in Pinks 💕 thank you again Jenny and MSQC for all you do
Oh I so wish I could add a picture to this comment. I watched this video over morning coffee (as I do most days). I needed a little mental break from two large quilt tops (also Missouri patterns) I’m working on and I thought I’m going to try these little wonky starts with some 2.5 “ squares I have. They turned out so well. Ive been woking on accuracy and the seams lined up beautifully. Thanks so much for your wonderful tutorial Jenny.
Love this idea and pattern! Just recently retired and I’m already a fan of Missouri Star for life. My grandmother taught me how to sew and hand quilt years ago and I’m excited to start all over again. Love your soothing voice and adorable personality Jenny! I’ll see you on the road in TN in March❤️
I think I recognized the blue and white quilt was made from "Blue Byrd" by Windham Fabrics. I have been drooling over those Williamsburg fabrics since Christmas. So now I think I will use this pattern to make my blue and white quilt. However, it will not be placed on the ground. It will be on the bed in my blue toile bedroom. Thank you , Jenny
I love it when you post a new tutorial it’s great watching you create beautiful designs...thank you so much for all your hard work and simple instructions, with best wishes from Scotland.
This quilt sort of reminded me of the women's suffrage flag, which was done in purple, gold, and white. Those are the colors I would choose to do this design in. It's great how you make those striped blocks look scrappy by simply turning them before you sew them together.
I “owe” a picnic quilt to newly weds that love red, white and blue. I was going to make the Charm Quilt on Point pattern but I love this so much I’ve changing my mind.
Oooh you have a new iron! So pretty! The Oliso irons aren't well known here in Australia, but I got a pink one through our local quilt shop who brought them in specially for their regular customers. All my friends love how it pops up when it is put down!!
So I’m currently watching your CBS Sunday morning special and I first wanted to say that I am so amazed by your story!! You are absolutely amazing and inspiring! Also, I would totally watch a reality TV show of you and your family running your business 😁 secondly, I’ve been a sewist for about 15 years now mostly making garments but I worked in a sewing machine shop as an internship in college and everyone there quilted. I never got into it but I’ve been thinking about trying it out lately! Then I saw your special this morning and thought that’s it! I have to try! Haha. I figured I could make one for my sisters wedding next year and from the thumbnail I thought this would be a cute quilt for her. And then right at the beginning of the video you said you make these for wedding gifts! Haha I can’t. I think it was meant to be 😂
Jeanine, thank you for this lovely pattern variation, I am working right now on my second Summer in the Park from your tutorials , the first one given to my sister and this one Maybe for me , love any of your patterns you make it so easy I will have to make this one too.
We're so glad you're enjoying stitching up the Summer in the Park pattern! Be sure to share your quilty creations with us using #msqcshowandtell. Happy quilting! :)

Quilt designed by Natalie, his mother, and made by his grandmother. What a memory for them. Love all your tutorials.
