Fun fact: The book this movie is based on has a different ending. Spookley still saves the patch and earns their respect, but in the book the farmer doesn't make him pick of the patch. Instead, he takes spookley's seeds and plants them in the ground, so that when the next harvest comes, they have even more square pumpkins, plus some triangular pumpkins and pumpkins that are a variety of different colors, including green, blue and yellow.
So in the book, Spookley basically becomes the next evolution of pumpkin.

What's ironic is that in Japan, there's an entire agricultural branch dedicated to growing square melons and other unique fruits. The work put into growing them takes a lot of skill and dedication, and often a large percentage of the crop doesn't make the cut. What does make the cut usually goes for very high prices, ($90+ range, if I remember correctly) and is typically given as gifts, not to be eaten, but to be displayed. Even in American culture though, how many people would pass up such a rare and unique *natural* genetic mutation? Like, you KNOW that kind of thing wouldn't happen often, so a lot of people would probably get it BECAUSE it's different.

I remember watching this movie when I was in preschool but I always thought the moral was “be nice” or “treat others the way you wanna be treated”. But now that Danny brought up these points about the movie I think his explanation makes more sense but kids can’t really examine it as “if you’re different everyone will hate you unless you help them in some way”. It’s a good point and it completely changes my perspective on this movie. I like that it subtly introduces kids to the harsh reality they have to struggle through in life.
