I wonder if that small entrance will allow the bees to do adequate fanning and cooling in hot weather. Also, I don't see what you mean when you say you won't have to reach over the bees to lift out the frames. With a conventional Langstroth hive you have only to stand beside the hive to grab a frame from each end without reaching over the bees.

Yes, it is easier to remove frames. Fanning works better than wide open. The venturi effect.
