A Legend Returns, RENTING A Tractor to Plant Food Plots!

  • In this week's episode, I finalized my 2024 fall plots by renting a tractor from a local hardware store. This was a cost effective, efficient way to get a food plot in the ground! There are several pros and cons to tilling a food plot, but a timely rain in the forecast sured up most of my worries. I wouldn't recommend this if you are in an area that is currently experiencing a drought and you need all of the soil moisture possible. To cap the episode off, I reintroduce a legend to the channel, "The Flyer Buck" and he's sporting an impressive set of headgear. Join me in the excitement of having a target buck reappear on camera!

    As someone who owns land and a compact tractor, if you can rent a tractor for $350, don’t bother owning one. I have a $5,000 rototiller I use once a year for spring plantings. Obviously if you need the tractor for routine use like cutting CRP, then it might be worth it. Spending $20k - $50k for the equipment, you better use it every week if you think you’ll get your value back. Great planting and I see you got the rain you hoped for.

      I agree, for now it doesn't make any sense to own one when I can do all of the work I need in one day. Next year, I may try to do all of my plots in the same day with that tractor.
      And yes, we did get the rain I was after! Just over an inch of rain in the last 24 hours. It has been slow and steady, so shouldnt have to worry about any washouts. Thanks for watching, I appreciate the support.

      Renting a tractor is definitely a great way to go , I own mine , for my small 37 acres an a couple of leases I lease by myself, it is convenient, but when something tears up , I pay for it , when renting, no more than you have , you don’t have any expenses towards equipment upkeep , pay the fee , get your stuff done an carry it back , you can spend a bunch of $350 ‘s rather than $15000 for a decent used tractor, an that front end loader is with its weight in gold !!! Keep the shows coming, greatly enjoy watching your shows !!!

    I did the "Throw and Mow" last Friday, knowing that rain was coming.
    I used the Extreme Blower Product seeder, and broadcast the seed into my standing clover, and weeds, and then immediately bush hogged the two food plots. This "thatch" cover helps to hide the seed from birds, and helps to keep moisture in the ground.
    This method has worked the past several years.

    Ethan, your plot looks great!! A tiller really makes a great seed bed, that's for sure. Wondering, did you do a soil test? My similar sized plot needed a bunch of lime when we started it several years back. Look forward to seeing how your plot turns out. Take Care, Dave
    P.S. Good luck with Flyer!!

    • @ethan_stubbs
      @ethan_stubbs  Месяц назад

      Yes, I did do a soil test. It wasn’t nearly acidic as I thought it was going to be. I may do some post emergent fertilizer depending on how the plot is looking. Thanks for watching!

    Cons to using a disc:
    1. terrible erosion when it does rain
    2. Kills earthworms by the thousands
    3. Kills beneficial microbes in the soil
    4. Depletes soil moisture
    5. Leads to a hard pan underneath where you tilled

    • @ethan_stubbs
      @ethan_stubbs  25 дней назад

      Pair that with potential regeneration of dormant weed seeds, and there is definitely an argument for the no till strategy. I think breaking the ground for this first time plot was the best option. Next year I may try to get a drill to plant. Thanks for watching!
