Would defeat the purpose. The mystery is the entire intrigue. It is more important as to WHY Robert does what he does, not WHO Robert is. The whole point of The Equalizer is that criminals need to be wary of average everyday people, because they don't know which one of them is a 'Robert McCall'.
Instead of a prequel, I'd love to see a crossover between Robert and John Wick, either as opponents or as allies. Both really good at what they do with an untold backstory.

There are a lot of good actors but a good actor that's also an interesting actor is pretty rare. For instance, Brando was a good as well as an interesting actor, it was amazing to watch him in whatever he did. Denzel Washington is also one of those rare actors who surprises you with the direction he takes in a role.
Points gun at one guy, and then somehow ties up all 20 other gunmen. I think seeing a Battle Royal with McCall + John Wick + Sarah Connor + Dirty Harry + Hit-Girl + Jules Winfield + Leon + Robocop + The Bride + Wolverine would be more believable.

At 1:46 there was some sinister music that came on leading to Andre and his henchman, just calmly staring at McCall and the cop. Made me a bit apprehensive and reminded me that these men kill with no hesitation. Damn good acting by Andre
It's great Hollywood, but in real life Denzel would be dead almost immediately. Not all the henchmen would have the nerves of steel and restraint not to pull a trigger even if their boss got killed.
