Pope John Paul II returned to the Philippines in 1995, a visit that celebrated the 10th World Youth Day. The Pope’s visit drew one of the largest crowds at a papal event which was estimated at over four million.
President Ramos and First Lady Amelita Ramos led the delegation who met and received His Holiness The Pope. Upon his arrival, President Ramos delivered a welcome address followed by His Holiness The Pope, who likewise delivered a speech.
The 10th World Youth Day in the Philippines marked the first time an Asian country hosted the event, and the second trip to the country of His Holiness after 14 years since his visit in 1981. This was also the last papal visit in the country in the 20th century and 2nd millennium.
