Your love of being outdoors shines through in your desert images. Your body language and movements makes it evident you are well on the mend from your back issues and that is great to see! It’s time to pull out the old school macro lens and find some spring blossoms. Thanks for the inspiration.

Some especially nice images when you got outside, Leigh. I am learning from several photographers, to not be locked into some idea when I go out to shoot. A plan, yes, but not cast in stone. I missed a potentially very good shot, because I was waiting for the conditions to be what I had in mind at the time. Only later when it was too late did I realize the potential which had been presented to me. Not only that, I had plenty of time to become aware of it. Tunnel vision; a curse. Thanks for this very good reminder. I like what the Lumix can do, by the way. Thanks for posting.

Great timing and synchronicity again, I picked up the LUMIX S 100mm macro yesterday in order to do a project of macro photogrammetry on food items including some vibrant red chillies and tender stem broccoli . It’s great to use and I’m inspired by this video to get out in my garden as it’s become full of flowers in the past weeks as spring tries to get going.

I loved this video, Leigh! We went to Texas in early April to photograph the wildflowers. In addition to photographing the large fields of flowers, I also took closeups of some of the individual flowers. I tried an experiment with off-camera flash, using an old Neewer Vision 4 unit. With my new Sony A9M3, I was able to shoot at 1/2000 sec. and f9, which isolated the flower from the background very well. I didn't use focus bracketing, but I realize now that I should do that in the near future. Since I'm using the flash, I'll do the bracketing with a focusing rail instead of trying it in-camera. Thanks again for the inspiration!

Focus bracketing is absolutely worth a try. It was really helpful but also difficult to use in the field. It really only worked with the cactuses that had no chance of moving!

I really enjoy macro photography - I use a flash mounted offset to my camera with a magmod diffuser. You can very easily get a fully black background even outside in bright sun, and get studio-like macro photos while still doing the more free-form approach of your hike. Using the flash lets you shoot at smaller apertures for the larger depth of field you want in macro, which might cause slower shutter speeds without it (potentially leading to motion blur or even movement of the focal plane from movement of the camera over the course of the exposure). The set up is a little bit bulkier and heavier than going out with just a 24-105, but it allows for a good mix of the studio style and hiking style. I shoot macro on a Sony A7RV and Sony 90mm G Macro, plus a Sony flash and flash control unit, mounted onto a small rig cage and arm to get the flash out near the end of the lens and off center. The mag mod diffuser is about the size of a softball, so it creates a huge light source when you’re right up against something small like a flower or bee.

Thank you for sharing this! I’m always so interested in how other people like to shoot. :)

Very inspirational video!! I've never done any real macro work, although your honesty is good to know up front before attempting macro work. Yes, focus bracketing is a required skill for macro work. I have bookmarked this video because of the lessons learned as well as the plethora of links you have provided. Nice work; I really like all of the saguaro & cactus close-ups!!

I've been doing macro photography since the 70s, and I was even able to work it into my job, taking macro photos to detect counterfeiting and tampering with seals and tags used in nuclear weapons treaty verification. My first fieldable system used a video camera with 640x480 resolution and a frame grabber on an IBM AT computer platform. The field of view was 36x24mm, and the depth of field was about a millimeter. It was a challenge to design the system so that it could be used on missiles in Siberia.
I was really excited when practical digital cameras became available. It's much easier to design macro systems that can be used in the field now.

I prefer shooting outdoors to a studio, but doing macro photography outdoors can present its own problems, and can take more set-up time than studio photography. No matter how sturdy your tripod is, the slightest breeze can make it all but useless (I guess that's an exaggeration, but it's to make a point). So I sometimes will carry portable Norman flash equipment, often using a ringflash for general fill, while modeling with the Norman heads (and yes, the stands, too!). I try to incorporate direct sunlight, of course, and need to sometimes light the background (depending on the subject and what I'm trying to do). That's a lot of work to make someting look natural while interesting! And lot different from going for a stroll in the outdoors! But I love the Norman line of portable flash power packs and lamps. And a flash meter is a must!
