Dear Leigh, This video made me realize that in my 50 plus year experience shooting Nikon (going back to the used Nikkormat FTn I bought in 1969), I've never owned a lens with a wider aperture than f/1.8! Currently I'm addicted to taking long walks on nearby trails with my Nikkor Z 50mm f/2.8 macro lens, and spotting wildflowers I've previously never noticed. Loving it. During this video I just looked up the Nikkor Z prices on the 50mm f/1.8 and 50mm f/1.2 and found one is $526 and one is $1900. Especially in this era of ISO flexibility, I'm loving the modern f/1.8 to f/4 lenses.

I really liked the Nikon Z 50mm f/2.8 Macro as well - it’s so compact!

@@LeighAndRaymond just last night I was shopping on line for a Z30 with the pancake 26mm lens to get the very lightest Z system camera to take overnight backpacking. Maybe I'll start scanning KEH. My next hike I'm going to "settle" for my Galaxy S24 Ultra's camera.

Thank you Leigh and Raymond, I enjoyed this video.
It seemed to me about having fun in photography.
Lovely images form both photographers and both lenses.

Great video. You should try the 50mm .95 noctilux.

A little further and you can find 50/1.0 (Canon EF) and even 50/0.7 (Zeiss) lenses. And be even more surprised. )))

    Dear Leigh
Nice to see you both again
    I enjoy my 50mm 1.2 ais
    Portraits are amazing !
A little soft wide open but at f/2 it’s ridiculously sharp
I’m playing in both systems L mount and F mount
And on L mount I was wondering or thinking about selling my Leica SL 50mm 1.4 to get the sigma 1.2
Not ready yet to let the LUX leave
You are so right . There are so many options out there for this focal distance.
The ais 1.2 is hold and you see that in the images. It’s for from being perfect but it’s the charm of these vintage lenses
Sometimes I want to have more this organic look than a perfectly mastered engineered cold image from modern lenses. But the Leica has this unique look also… as the Otus 55 1.4 too. It’s another story 😉

Leigh, I really love your videos. I currently use the Leica 50mm APO Summicron-SL and 50mm Summilux-SL on my SL3. Each has their advantages. Do you think the Sigma 50 1.2 can replace both of them without leaving anything on the table?

I have only ever had a single f-mount 50mm lens and never used it. Still, I always feel like I should have one of these in my kit…. Why? No idea but they are still cool!
Thanks Leigh and Raymond for sharing your time with us.
Also, can you really call the basket ball shots of Raymond “action”? 😅

I‘m sorry, but after this video I‘m quite disappointed. My expectation from the headline was to learn something new. There are tons of vintage lenses and it would be nice to see differences (or not) between the old and new designs. But that was the one thing you explicitly not did, because in my opinion you had to compare the same scenery with the 2 different lenses to do so. So this video showed some pictures and you give some general comments (I expected that the old lens is not as sharp as the new one wide open…), but everytime when it becomes interesting you stopped.
So this video maybe is a good starting point for someone who never used such lenses, but if you have some experience the video lacks the details using this headline!
