My strategy: I always have 3-4 long term pieces in mind, but I just don’t go shopping. I might run into something when I am on holiday or when I run around town, but I learned to only ever buy the item when it is at least a 9/10.
This is kind of a flip side of the only-buying-things-in-the-sales thing. I find myself having to be extra careful when deciding whether or not to buy something in the sales that I've had my eye on for a while. This is because of the temptation to view it as a good buy just because it has been reduced in price. I'm pretty fickle myself and am prone to losing interest in certain items that I thought I really wanted. Similarly if you've been given a gift voucher/card and feel tempted to use it straight away. I've learned the hard way that it's much better to hang on until something you really want comes along. As usual, great video 👍
That’s a very good way of looking at it and I know exactly what you mean! I will only buy something on sale if I’ve genuinely wanted it for a few months
I hate how a lot of luxury brands live off of the branding. they'll slap their logo all over a piece so that people can walk around as a billboard that goes "I spent too much on this" when you can get the same quality if not better for way cheaper. I have a sweatshirt that's $105 that has smoked other ones i've tried for 4x the price. And it doesnt have me being a billboard either, which is how I like it. It's like Zuckerberg, he's wearing extremely premium T-shirts but a lot of people just look at it as a simple t-shirt. He's custom ordering them for $300 a pop from Brunello Cucinelli. The feel of high quality doesn't have to be advertised. This is the main reason I cant stand branding on clothes. At most I'll allow like a small logo on something in leather. Even gone as far as to remove patches and such that's been stitched in to clothes because I dont like it.
Same I like waiting for sales and if it’s gone then it wasn’t meant to be. I’m sad to hear you are stopping shopping and giving away your clothes. I hope it doesn’t affect the channel in the future for content as I did subscribe for your outfit ideas and hauls.
Not only is searching too specifically going to give you less options, but let’s say if you do find something listed by it’s official name: That person understands the products value and you may get a poor deal! Anyways, great video mate, great values too.
I buy based on the outfit I want to create. That makes it very easy to choose what to wear since I have the items I want for that particular look. I feel 7-10 is the maximum I need in a rotation at a time, and this way I avoid buying anything that I don't need.
I did discover your channel recently, you are such an inspiration, and I love your chill voice :D Keep up the good work, and thanks alot for all those advices/point of view. Big love from France (✿ ♥‿♥)
The sale price point that you made, is something that I still have from when I was dirt broke in my early 20s as a student. Now that I work in science and make a good living i'm still having a hard time spending money because the mentality is still there. I'll see a shirt I really like but still wait in hopes it drops in to sales lol.
Hello, I am in the middle of a wardrobe shakeup after a massive weight loss but I need help. In your videos you talk about the importance of sizing and proportions. I have relatively short legs (31 inches legs, 164 cm height / 34 inches waist) and most of the advise online is to buy high waist/raise pants for shorter people, but most brands don't really sell those for men, mostly women. How do I go about buying them? Most of the women trousers with high raise come some other caveats that I am not keen on a lot of the times (baggy, flared out, tight thigh areas etc).
Many vintage style reproductions of men’s jeans have a high rise for those proportions! There are a bunch of Japanese brands making incredible repros - they’re prohibitively expensive new but I’ve had no problem finding deals secondhand in my size
Great vid James. I think that this behavior is part of becoming more mature - getting to know your body type, what you actually wear and consolidating your wardrobe. I’m curious about this weekday hoodie. Any particular reason why you choose a female basic over men’s basic? Cheers 🙌
Definitely agree with that! The main thing I liked was the shorter length. But also it has the double zip and it’s also heavier weight than the men’s equivalent. It’s a lovely piece!
For the “on sale” thing I would add to not buy stuff from stores that always have sales. I bet a lot of people have noticed that certain stores basically have sales all the time. So you get tricked into thinking you’re buying something that’s marked down a lot but it’s only a few dollars at the end of the day. I’ve kept track of these stores so I don’t go and immediately buy something because it’s “on sale” there. I want to find the real deals and stuff that’s actually marked down well.
something we need to take in consideration is that for most people 200 dollars is a lot of money to put towards one single item of clothing. I understand the whole concept of this and I know it might not meant to be for everyone but like me for example I always try to find the best quality item I can but price is a thing I need to take in consideration.
We may have the same mindset. I don't buy knockoffs and I don't buy things that are super loud (monograms and logos) like Gucci, etc. I may go loud on bold colours but no logos. And textures as long as the construction, stitching are good because they will last. If I can't afford a piece that I like, I go for vintage or Preloved items 😊
100% agree with your first point. I wanted white Common Projects Achilles but settled on a pair of KOIO's (still a great shoe). Fast forward 1 year and now I own a pair of white Common Projects Achilles. This year I wanted the YSL wyatt chelsea boots. I was tempted to buy an alternative on discount but I bit the bullet and just went for the YSL's.
I think what I have difficulty with in terms of shopping is the change in the weather. I live in a place where it will snow half a meter and drop well below 32 degrees (0 degrees celsius) and then in the summer we'll have a couple of days where its 100 degrees (50 degrees celsius). I need 3 or 4 different jackets, two pairs of boots, some sandals, plenty of linen, and a wide variety of pants.
Oh my.... this is where I am at right now and I'm glad you made it even more clearer. However my take is Crockett & Jones been making Moccasins since I can't remember so I think it's OK to choose them over Gucci Moccasins, for an example.
Dont stress bro, I too have a footwear acquisition DISEASE! I recently won a bid on ebay for some mint squared toe harness boots and am currently wearing the navy black gh bass x nic daley loafers; the quality isn't as high as i would like. However, they're 🔥 with black trousers. BUT WHAT AM I DOING WITH LIFE
right now my #1 rule is to buy anything that really makes me fall in love w it… if something is off or making me contemplate, it means that its not worth purchasing
Another great video, keep it up, Shorter length tops, pants that sit higher at the waist and a bit more fitted seems like something that I’d be interested though coming in only at 5ft6 I don’t know if that would suit me though I have an inkling it might. I also like the outfits you showed when you said that line. Might have to screenshot them for inspiration.
@@JamesLeung they're lovely, once I got my pair of heavyweight 888s I realised how much I loved them, sold all my jeans and bought all 888s, overdyed, black, indigo. They also make fantastic jackets. Really really pricy but I know I will get extremely long usage with them.
My strategy: I always have 3-4 long term pieces in mind, but I just don’t go shopping. I might run into something when I am on holiday or when I run around town, but I learned to only ever buy the item when it is at least a 9/10.
Love this, thank you!
Agree on not trying to buy hype things. I do love when trends die, and things I’ve wanted and waited for years go down in price.

We are getting old thats why
Too true 🤣
The quote cluttered house, cluttered mind is so true. I feel so much lighter every time I declutter my closet. Gotta love that feeling!
Hell yes!!
My man where did you get the zip up that you’re wearing? I’ve been looking for one and it looks like the material I’m looking for, lmk thanks
It’s from Merz B. Check out my spring outfits video for more info!
Really like this advice from your channel as a fashion RUclipsr you’re really honest especially with the cons of fashion especially overbuying items
Thank you! As I get older I see the value in buying fewer but better things
This makes a lot of sense tbh.
Fantastic video, James. 100% agree w everything you said
Thank you mate!

Yeah it’s sad when it becomes about the logo instead of the quality of the piece!
When I shop online I just browse by highest % sale items and add the things I really like to my list, then I consider whether I buy them or not.
I do that as well!

Yes exactly!! It’s such a dream scenario when the seller doesn’t know what they have haha
Great info here brother!!
Thanks bro! 🙏
Always look forward to your videos

Very good informative video with well thought out ideas, stop overconsuming! Thanks dude.
For sure! Thank you man

Haha I’m exactly the same. I think even if I was a millionaire I’d still be really frugal 🤣
Me too, I can't find any reason to buy retail. I always buy sale, Used, and thrift items.
I like tops short too man, I used to cut almost all my shirts and get shit for it lol. There are more options nowadays though.
Haha I’ve cut so many of my shirts because they’re too long!
I think you need to buy reps mate, almost 1:1 with gen but usually 10-20% of gen, obviously not everything are repped but worth checking
Agreed on point 1, you will always want the real thing, so no point in wasting money.
🙏
How I needed this video right mow 😂
Hope it helped!
Bought Margiela tabi "dupe" dont care, love them, margiela ones aint original either
I'm not wasting my money on clothes and shoes. Only socks.
Same lol, I only thrift with the exception of stuff like socks or underwear/boxers
Well you shouldn’t really waste money on socks either, just some white and black socks will have you set for a long time
Fantastic video, James. I also have an abundance of pants and shoes and am constantly assessing what I want or should declutter.
I’m slowly getting rid of everything I don’t need! It can be difficult.
What about buying from a outlet store !?
Muchos besos ese !!
What about cutting down clothes and buying some lights to shoot your videos?😂
I have too much light through my window! I need blinds or curtains if anything haha

Definitely! The first one that comes to mind is GAP. They have 40% off like every week

Totally understand. That’s why I almost never buy anything full price and wait for sales or find it second hand on eBay

Vintage is the way to go! I might have more vintage than new things in my rotation at the moment haha
The big clearout is fun. The problem is all that money in your vinted/grailed account going right back into more clothes!
I try to reinvest it into fewer but nicer quality pieces! But only if I actually need them, otherwise the money will be saved for something else 👍
What are your thoughts on coach jackets?
100% agree with your first point. I wanted white Common Projects Achilles but settled on a pair of KOIO's (still a great shoe). Fast forward 1 year and now I own a pair of white Common Projects Achilles.

I almost did the same thing with Wyatt boots. So glad I didn’t! Thanks for watching
One thing that’s been a problem for me is buying clothes that look similar to one another. Especially black pants & jackets.
Yeah I used to do that! I had like 5 pairs of black jeans

Yeah to be fair if you have extreme weather changes like that you kind of need two different wardrobes!

what grey zippered shirt are you wearing?

How can a fashion content creator make his content without routinely buying new clothes? 😂 it kinda goes against your career
It’s difficult haha. It was much easier when I was buying loads of clothes but now I need to be more thoughtful about what I make videos about!
