  • This film is incredible. It's not super good, but I've watched it six times. I didn't include it in this video, but when that one robot yells "I am losing my mind!" while bolts and screws are falling out of his head, I could have cried it was so great.

Thank you all so much for the early love on this video! It means the world! I meant to post this video in November, but then I split ramen on my laptop and had to get a new one 😐 This video almost didn't see the light of day, but I managed to export it before my laptop completely self-destructed. *I have another video planned before the end of the month on Netflix Christmas movies, so stay tuned for more!*

"Your ability to pay determines your ability to get better" That hits hard as someone who was in a workplace accident that resulted in me nearly losing my leg, working for a company with no workers comp just trying to survive and not having insurance at the time meant that I was given just enough care to no die or loose my leg right away (still probably going to loose it eventually) but not enough to actually get better and not be permanently disabled. I needed a surgery to put in artificial tendons and ligaments in my knee, every major one was completely destroyed like my ACL, MCL, Miniscus, ect. I was even scheduled for the surgery and everything and it wasnt until i showed up at the hospital at 5 in the morning the day of the surgery getting ready to get prepped for surgery that I was brought into the administration office and told that because I didnt have insurance and had reached my limit finically for billable services I had to pay an upfront down payment of 10 grand or I couldnt have the surgery. RIght then and there they expected me to somehow have that kind of money. As i sat there and broke down in tears begging the lady to help me somehow, she was like oh well you dont at least have a credit card you could put it on in. Obviously not, even if i had a credit card at the time it wouldnt have had a 10,000 dollar spending capability. So I was forced to leave and go home and do this day, 5 years later I still have no tendons of ligaments in my knee. After having to go through a lawyer and the long process of getting on disability which took about a year, and then after the 2 years I had to wait after being approved to be able to get Medicaid insurance and finially thought maybe I would be able to get the surgery I needed to gin back my mobility and be able to go back to work I found out that they no longer could do the surgery because of all the scar tissue that had built up over the years of me waiting for a way to pay for the surgery. Now at 33 years old I am permanently disabled.

I went back and watched this with my family on a whim a few months ago and... When I grew up I never realized until how much this says fuck you to the healthcare system, it was just a fun movie as a kid. But watching it now as a full blown leftie it's so great. Not just the healthcare system, but how capitalism causes people to not fix problems because that's less profitable. Absolutely awesome.

It’s always weird when corporate greed is this bad. You can help the poor easily and barely see a dent in your profits. But screwing over the poor is apparently worth an extra couple of bucks.

All "Robots" commentary is good commentary 🥰 but thank you for taking the time to tie it into the real world. It's one thing to deal with the film's internal logic, it's another level of effort entirely to draw the logical parallel between its world and ours. It's truly insane that things our so bad we just make movies about them.

A rather rather depressing outlook that the healthcare systems is a necessity while actively screwing over lower income people and families. great vid, both of your guys' dedication to research is impressive and admirable.

It seems like an increasing number of people start to think about these things more and more in the US, which is needed for change to be implemented. :)
Of course, this could be wrong. It is difficult to know looking at the situation from the outside. But one can hope!

I do not see how this movie has anything to do with health care, but I have to agree with most of what you have said about not the movie. The movie is about good capitalism in a anarcho world where those have power who have money. The old dictator got overthrown by a new one who is worse than the old one. Good guy from the middleclass comes to save the world. Yey good dictator :) ?

    • @allartisbad

Uh oh, I was hoping it came across well enough for people who haven't seen this movie recently, but basically I think the fixing of broken robots is akin to health care because they are basically prolonging the lives of people who are "breaking down"--ie sick or injured in some way, and in some instances directly addressing their disabilities. At other points, the idea of "upgrades" seems more like a cosmetic thing, but it is also similar to the idea of being able-bodied and thin, which are both aesthetic traits that we often associate with health in the real world.

@@allartisbad I am sorry if I was too blunt. What I was trying to say is. The good version of "Healthcare" in this movie is exactly how it has always been for all of my life. The bad guy then takes away all healthcareplans but one. So basicly it is still the same system, it is just very limited in choice. Which just exaggerates the problem that was already in place. "Upgrades" made me think more of clothing and having to wear the old stuff from your older sibblings. But I honestly think the movie never gave much thought about police and capitalism aside of perpetuating the story and look & feel. A big thanks, that you took out time of your day to answer. I am sorry if my "Question" disheartened you, that was never my intend. I have huge respect for your work, because it is a lot of work to put these things together. More than my lazy self ever did. :)
