The Percy Jackson movie was bad but the script was worse
You might have heard the buzz on TikTok and social media about the Percy Jackson movies--memes, GIFs, Reddit threads on how they're "not that bad", and, naturally, movements calling for references to these films in the new Disney+ adaptation. But Rick? Rick is having none of that. If you're interested, we happen to have a peak into his mind in the form of emails sent directly to the filmmakers *while the movies were being written*. AND we have the working screenplay. ...Oof.
Anyways Happy Pride Month!!!

The movie is actually how I was introduced to the series. I was a young autistic kid with ADHD and a special interest in Greek mythology, and I was hooked on the movie just from the premise alone. Then I found out about the books, read them, and grew to absolutely love them. One adult in my life went as far as reading the books just to be able to hold a conversation with me, because I was THAT obsessed with the series. I also realized pretty quickly that the movie was just... bad, especially as an adaptation. Despite that, I still went to see Sea of Monsters in theaters (though I cannot remember why) and enjoyed it for what it was, even if it was not all that great either. The movies are bad, but I hold a begrudging soft spot for the first one, if only for introducing me to Percy Jackson in the first place.

Yes! I can’t believe how badly the Percy Jackson movies butchered the books! As a huge fan of Rick Riordan’s series, the adaptations were a massive disappointment. The script was an absolute mess, completely ignoring key plot points and character development that made the books so engaging. They aged up the characters for no reason, and the story felt rushed and hollow. The essence of the books’ charm and humor was totally lost. Hollywood needs to stop ruining beloved books with these half-hearted attempts. If they had just followed the source material more closely, it could have been epic. Such a wasted opportunity!

I've been on movie field trips; they were either associated with a book we read in class or educational. If the book, we read had an older movie that wasn't at the theater we would have a movie day at school where we would have a party day with snacks and soda.

Basically this video summarized my opinion about the series, I hope they change the negative things from the first season in the second (and apparently this will happen because the guy who wrote the script for the last episode will be showrunner in the second season, and he wrote the best episode of the season so maybe that's a good sign?) From the second season onwards, they have to jump in head first and go further with acting, CGI, script, etc.

  • @lucasoliver2571

The audacity of some people saying that the films are better than the series is unbelievable The series has many flaws, but they are flaws that can be fixed in the second season and there is clearly a certain level of respect for the author and the original work, as for the films...I can't say the same

@@heromanager4271The only good part of the first film is the Lotus Casino, that's the only thing the films gain from the series. As for the rest, the series wins hands down. The cast of the series has chemistry (which the film's cast doesn't have), the fidelity is on point (something the films ignored), scenes that were never adapted finally had their moment to shine in the series, the second film is so bad that anything the series does will be infinitely better. Rick has a history of listening to fan criticism and applying it to his work (just ask Piper), so why would the series be any different? Sometimes pessimism is bad

What I really liked about Everything Now, and Heartstopper, is how they explore how the person with the ED impacts the people around them. I like that Mia is flawed and is kinda a crappy person outside of her ED (although I guess it’s hard to separate her from it so early in her recovery). Obviously the person with the ED experiences the most suffering and pain, but it wouldn’t be right to say that loved ones don’t experience the shit from it too, especially like Mia’s brother in EN

I think Rick may have been misled as to how much they were going to let him "advise" on the project sadly :/ I really hope he wasn't taken for a ride by big time Hollywood execs who thought they could manipulate the out-of-his-depth author into signing away the rights to a million dollar franchise, but either way I HOPE he got a big check out of it. I think it also impacted the way he approached projects going forward, because he clearly got a much more involved role for the Disney show. I'm not sure if he would have had the power to stop that adaptation from going forward if he wanted to (considering Disney had already acquired the rights), but I feel like he would have chosen to stop the development if he wasn't going to be allowed to write for it.

    • @allartisbad
      @allartisbad 11 дней назад

I personally find that if I watch the TV show/movie, THEN read the book of something, I like the adaptation more and end up being over with the changes. But if I read the books first, then I end up more annoyed at changes and it almost ruins the experience of watching the adaptation, so I try to avoid that and watch the adaptations first in order to get an unbiased experience. Also, some books are just flat out bad but end up making for good movies. For example, the Godfather (from what I've heard) is actually a pretty bad book but of course ended up as one of the greatest films of all time lol So adaptational changes on their own are not inherently a bad thing at all!

I definitely don't want to tell anyone that they're wrong for personally liking the movies or being nostalgic for them (I like plenty of stuff either as guilty pleasures or that I genuinely think is good that others think is bad), but it's more about the quality of filmmaking and especially writing. It was extremely characteristic of bad YA movies of the time. It just failed at all the things it was clearly trying to do: world-building, character writing, narrative arcs, and smaller things like humor, action and visuals. As young kids, it's hard to notice a lot of this stuff but what they COULD notice is that it's not a faithful adaptation, so that's what fans mentioned and remember to this day. Young viewers who didn't read the books wouldn't know that it's unfaithful, obviously, and may not be cognizant of all the other ways it failed, leading to them finding it fun. But still, that was clearly a minority of kids given that the film did not do well commercially (probably too "adult" for kids that young).

Iroh has a line in the finale about how Zuko can't kill Ozai himself, because the world would see it as a continuation in the cycle of violence. Aang taking away Ozai's firebending is a way more politically/symbolically significant move and backs up Aang's claims of wanting peace between nations. I do wish that Ozai's lightning had been the thing to unblock the avatar state when Aang hesitated to shoot it back at him. Lightning, which is the purest form of firebending and has been exclusive to the royal family for centuries. Which is first explored in depth in Bitter Work, where Iroh goes over the qualities of each nation and stresses the need for balance between all four. The redirection of lightning in particular was learned by Iroh studying waterbenders, used by Azula to kill Aang in the earth kingdom, and finally taught to Aang by Zuko in the fire nation. It could have been an inverse to Zuko's story beginning, tie in with the Zuko/Azula duel and make Aang's choice of non-violence feel relevant in a more tangible way.

*I found this video by looking up reviews for Everything Now, since I just finished the series....and by your video being recommended, I came across so much more than I was looking for and I want to thank you for that! Thank you for educating us from your perspective and others on what it really is like for someone vs what we see in the media. As someone on the opposite end of things (what I learned to actually be Binge Eating), it's crazy to see how many similarities we actually have in our Eds. I felt that while watching the show and I cried during certain parts and I feel it tenfold now while watching you speak about the other end of the ED Spectrum. Both disorders leads to unhealthy bodies and can lead to our passing if we didnt/dont get a handle on things. Both ED sufferers feel like how can it not take up our entire minds if its something we're required to do to survive. Food addiction in a disordered way is So so so hard to manage because unlike Any other addiction, we Cannot just go cold turkey and never think of it again. A druggoAddict can more easily not be around them ever again, an alcoholic can never have a drop of alcohol again and beat alcholism..they can rid their homes of it and never be forced to be around those subtances again. But us-with food addiction literally have to put food in our mouths every day and be told "but just a little cause anymore than that youll keep being addicted and pass." To the world it's "so what just diet and exercise"...but to us it's literally like telling a Coke addict "Okay you Must get clean and stop doing lots of coke..but oh no, you cant stop being around it, but instead you need to just find the will power to only do 1 tiny bump of coke each day...unsupervised for the rest of your live." And I can imagine how on the other end of the spectrum you must hear "just eat, its not that hard" vs how you actually felt/feel about it. But I bring that up because I felt that in my soul when both Mia and You say "how can you escape that ed when it's food, you must think about it and be forced to deal with it multple times a day for all of your life."* *Im also crying while writing this because I also feel in my deep deep soul the sentiments of feeling like a failure and how I may never recover. I, after years of doing well and falling back over and over again actually just had weight loss surgery about 8 months ago. I literally had a surgery in which they cut my stomach by 80% to help aid me in my new weight loss journey to health. And yes I went from 270lbs day of surgery to now 220lbs but as my stomach is able to stretch again and im getting more stressed in live Im reverting back to old habits and my scale has been embarrassingly stagnent and going up again. Ive even rescheduled my next appt with my surgeon to give me more time to "get back on track" and lose the weight I was supposed to be losing for the passed 3 months since Ive last seen her and even with that pressure I just feel like im eating more than ever. Im embarrassed, ashamed and feel like recovery isnt ever gonna be possible for me. I watched hundreds of hours of others content who had the surgery I did and they all look and feel amazing..but im such a failure and I cant figure out why. So yeah, even thought Mia and people like you are on the opposite end of the ED spectrum, I still feel many of the same things. Cause those of us with disordered eating one way or the other have deep-seated reasons as to why we avoid/purge or binge food. I dont want to be this way anymore and it can feel even more embarrassing when everyone knows that you went to the extreme of surgery and you still cant do it. Every "compliment" about how "good I look" burns as well. People mean well, I get it but it just can cut so deep, it truly makes me feel like im only worth love&admiration if I can just be thinner. :/

    • @allartisbad

Wow thank you so much for opening up and telling your story. I hope that you are proud of everything you've accomplished and how far you've come! I totally understand how people saying things like "you look so good/healthy/beautiful" is so much more harmful than helpful. People don't understand the impact their words can have. Make sure you continue to have adequate mental health support as you go through this challenging time. I know a lot of people who have had different weight loss surgeries, so I know how hard it is. Also, it's different for every person, so if you don't achieve the results you or your doctor wanted, it's not your fault at all--it's just a result of us all having different bodies. You NEVER have to be ashamed or guilty for eating, no matter how much or what you eat. It's just a normal human function! If it's becoming disordered again, that's where mental health support comes in. I would really recommend getting support from someone trained in ED care, specifically binge-eating disorder if possible. I am sending you so much love right now <3

The conservative worldview is just obvious in so many ways 1. The way Walt connects with Thao is by teaching him how to be a real man 2. Racism is an individual problem, we can fix it by acquainting the lonely old white man with an asian boy 3. Black people are predators and wear tank tops 4. Walt is a Gigachad who never shows signs of weakness 5. Christianity will ultimately catch up to you 6. If we just arrest all the gang members, the problem goes away 7. If we just laugh about racism, it is no longer a problem etc. I can understand why this movie appeals to a lot of people. It offers a simple approach to racism without really having to think about it or feeling the need to tackle it after watching it, because the problem of Racism just kind of solves itself, and the "small" acts of racism like jokes are just portrayed as funny.

great video, i thought you would have a lot more subs! i agree, i viewed to the bone as 100% trigger content, almost felt like thats what they were going for...the fact that they made her basically reignite her ED to lose weight for the role is pretty disgusting. and they made a treatment center seem pretty fun, like a fun camp with friends. i really liked everything now, its def one of the better non documentary style portrayal of EDs ive seen. I agree, i love her inner thoughts being shared & because of my own personal experience, I really love how they emphasized that EDs/anorexia IS NOT just about wanting to be thin, it can start with you wanting to lose weight & spiral out of control into becoming a coping mechanism. A way to feel better, to feel like youve accomplished something in your life. Im so sick of people making ED videos and its all about wanting a certain body type. Its really a small part of it, a symptom of it, IMO. I think it can be compared to a drug addiction, being thin isnt the drug, the ED itself is. I used to not understand when people said EDs were about control, but i completely get it now that im older. I actually lowkey wanted everything now to be full on trigger content...and while it is definitely that, it has a decent balance. Also, yeah, terrible name for a show. lol

In my opinion the problem was its script. It wasn't focused enough. There were at least three routes this movie could have taken: 1- Barbieland is a matriarchy and Kens journey is to discover and fight for their liberation, with the message being "see men? This is what it feels like when the roles are reversed." 2 - Barbie is in a journey of womanhood. Starting with her discovering cellulite and mood changes, menstruation, to a romantic awakening with the Kens, and her relationships with other Barbies. 3 - Barbie goes to the real world to help women be happier and achieve some change. Battling not only women's relations with Men, but also among each other. (There was a small criticism of feminism that forces women to abandon femenitiy with the examples of America Ferrera's character feeling dissatisfied with her career and yearning for her mother moments; or her daughter mocking Barbie for being girly and her presenting masculine, therefore belittling femeninity). But the movie doesn't concentrate on one topic, rather it just presents it briefly and then moves to the next thing without proper development, much less resolution. This causes the audience to not center around Barbie or America Ferrara, but on the underdog character: Ken. Ken steals the show because he's the marginalized character that seeks justice, and instead of the story supporting this line, it tries to undermine it by ridiculing the rebellion of the Kens. The intention may have been to make it comedic, but it was more patronizing. As if, oppression is good if led by Pink and women, but bad if Men with their cars, sports and movies. Definitely not a feminist concept. To me, the movie runners really thought all the events of the movie would have concluded with the message patriarchy is bad and women are suffering, and that's evidenced by America's speech. But it just didn't land they way they thought it would. Especially, since America's speech, while true in the vacuum, it doesn't make sense in the context she says it where an oppressed class is fighting the oppressor and the speech is to support the oppressor. That speech would have made sense had she said in the real world where, allegedly, women are still second class citizens. (I'd argue that they're not though). I understand you're point that a movie should not be judged for what it's not trying to be, however this is not the case of it. Poor Things, for example, it's being criticized for not being really feminist, but it had no intention of being. I go farther than saying Margot and Greta were not snubbed by the Oscar's. I think this movie should not have been nominated for any category except Costume and Design. And I do believe there was a spot for Best Director that should not have gone to Scorcesse. I believe the real snubbed was Celine Song for Past Lives. In all honesty, I do see this as a bad movie. I didn't think it was funny, the plot was a mess and inconclusive, and the message wasn't delivered properly. This last part is the worst because it's so obvious that everything in this movie is a vessel for its message to be delivered and it just didn't make the landing. Good video though 👍

the discourse around barbie made the movie and overall experience worse imo. everyone who talked about it like it changed their lives and it was so feminist made me feel like we didn't watch the same movie. so agree with your nuanced take, and also appreciate the idea that "because something is feminine doesn't mean it's about feminism" say it again and LOUDER.

I really liked your take, it was also needed. Lately everything seems that it is either a masterpiece or overrated, while things are much more nuanced. Do you have Letterboxd? <3

Just found your channel, agreed with everything and have faced the judgement of mentioning the same opinion, perhaps in a more rudimentary manner. I'm interested to know your opinion on Poor things Keep the great work

Hello! Thank you for the kind words, they mean so much <3 I loved Poor Things! There is a lot to enjoy (I think the pacing was just a little off). While at first I didn't know how I felt about how it handled the women's autonomy issue, I understood what it was going for by the end. Emma deserves her nom, but not the win (Lily Gladstone's).

19:12 one thing, when I heard that list I rlly felt like this show should have been about young adults. It’s those who miss out on these sorts of things, spending their teenage years wrapped up in their Ed’s. 16 yr olds have time. And maybe it’s just cuz I’m not as well off as Mia, but as a British kid we rlly weren’t doing any of the stuff on that list for a while, like relationships maybe but partying and underage drinking n stuff is much rarer imo until later teens

I will say while most Ed media is godawful, everything now presented a mixed race disordered girl, representation id never seen before, and did way better with most of the ed topics than other movies. Outright saying it’s not about vanity, it’s not about social media and that “healthy” is a horrible word to hear at the start of recov. It was nice just to see something different

36:11 THIS! Watching media that depicts EDs, I’m always amazed by how LUCID the characters are, even in their worst states. They make sense when they talk, they can be witty and insightful… they aren’t tearful, irritable or completely blank-minded from undernourishment. It’s an aspect that many might not consider, but after recovery, it stuck out the most to me

Yeah, To the Bone is nonsensical, IMO. I thought that when it came out and still think that now. As someone who has been in and out of IP in the past (which did not help, for many reasons, sadly), everything about it the way it was handled was ridiculous. Everything Now was overall, a good show! My Mad Fat Diary is also wonderful

To the bone was lame, and I never found it triggering. Instead, I found it offensive and stereotyping. The best film on ED was Starving in Suburbia: Thinsporation. For the Love of Nancy is the next best film. Thank you for mentioning the stereotypes of men with ed. What never seems to be mentioned is the pressure placed on us from our parents. I was told I was fat and placed on a diet. I had a problem with the texture of food and would only eat certain foods.
