Thank you so much for the walkthrough; don't think I could have done this by myself!
I finally made it! Adapt is now running just fine after several mishaps, thank you for your fantastic video!
never seen a clearer set of instructions. All installed, no blips - thank you!
Thanks Mike. Hopefully this is the start of you creating some awesome content.
Crystal clear. It's almost as if you're an instructional designer of some sort.
But seriously, I attempted to do this twice last year and failed. Having an extremely clear and up-to-date video made this possible. Some small things such as checking windows updates and running cmd as adminstrator are often missing out of instructions, but not yours!
Hey Tom, I'm glad this was helpful. I'm planning on looping back to adapt videos in the future to cover the basics of the tool. Do let me know if there's anything you'd really like to see!
@@InstructionalDesignTips A step-by-step for creating your first course will help.
Brilliant thanks Tom. I have trawled through so many videos about installing Adapt and had no luck what so ever. This is spot on and so clearly explained. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge.
Glad it helped, do let me know if there's anything else you want to see on the channel as it grows.
@@InstructionalDesignTips So I have just run the install through successfully and the first time I accessed localhost:5000 Adapt displayed correctly and I was able to log in. But when I closed it all down and tried again it just says: This site can’t be reached localhost refused to connect. What do I need to do to make sure it loads up again? I'm wondering if it's because I have my documents on OneDrive?
@@Jaydelberry If you shut down/restarted you'll need to rerun the node server instruction each time you want to access your instance of Adapt.
Just open your command prompt, change the directory to your adapt files and run the 'node server' instruction again. This should restart your instance. Also, make sure you don't close the command prompt window whilst using the tool.
If you're still having issues, I would suggest using a local file for your installation, rather than a one drive file - though this shouldn't really be causing you an issue.
@@InstructionalDesignTips You are a star thank you very much! All working now :)
You saved me from headaches and confusion. Your instructions are super clear and easy to follow. Thanks a million!!!
Glad it helped!
Is it as hard to use as it is to install..in other words, is it worth the effort?
This was an incredibly helpful video! Thank you so much for creating it! I've put off exploring Adapt for years, because it seemed extremely complicated. Can't believe I finally installed it. :)
Hey Alexandra, still using Adapt? Hows ur progress on tool?
This was awesome! A few years ago, I had attempted to install this but gave up because it kept failing. This tutorial was awesome! Your instruction was perfectly paced; the live video demo was effective. Thank you. Now, I'm excited to dig in....finally!
Is it as hard to use as it is to install, ie is it worth it?
@@greenspringvalley It's still not super user-friendly but I find this to be a worthy option for certain scenarios. When I compare it to the cost of a Rise subscription, I'm ok with the learning curve! :)
There is definately a learning curve. I would say the additional learning time is the trade off for using an open-source tool. One upside si that the community is always happy to help (i know I have asked many, many questions in the forum).
@@gracereality thanks
Really appreciate it. I got it installed, thanks to your instructions
and optimism. Folks, stay with it...and if run into bugs get it to the
99% mark and then ask a computer geek to figure out what's missing. The
interface looks user friendly..
Freakin brilliant, just what I was looking for :)
Glad this was useful MAK
Wow! That was so awesome. Adapt Authoring tool installed. I'm so excited!!! Thank you so much!
Great to hear!
This was a great walk through of installing Adapt on a local machine! Thanks for the video. I usually work from a version hosted on a central server but having a local instance will allow me to test extensions without worry :)
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this video! I can categorically say that if it would not have been for your video, I would never have been able to install this tool:)
Hey I'm glad you found this helpful.
Thank you so much. This was so helpful!
Happy to hear it!
So good! Thank you.
Thanks!
Thanks sooooo muuuuuch
You're very welcome. Hopefully the tool can be put to good use!
Wow. That was a journey. But it worked. Thanks!
It certainly takes some work. But it's worth it!
@@InstructionalDesignTips - not sure why, but it worked when I first installed, but now when I type localhost:5000 in my browser it's giving me a ''can't reach this page' message. Any suggestions?
Thank you for this! Clear and concise 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Hello Tom!
First I need to thank you for this great post. I was searching this for a long time. Finally with the help for your video I have installed it successfully. Once again Thanks the video. Please keep on post more videos like this.
One more request. I want edit the course which was created 2years back. Do you have any reference for that? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for your kind comment. I'm going to try and get more Adapt content out there very soon.
Many thanks for the clear guide. Was not able to complete the installation. After I run "npm install --production", it showed the first line ...extract:ffmeg-static: and stopped there. Any suggestion to fix it, Tom?
Hi, Tom! Please ignore my request below. I re-run the related comment and was able to complete the process. Thanks again.
Hi Ngo TL, I'm glad this worked for you, even if it wasn't 100% smooth. Let me know if you run in to any further issues or if there is anything you'd like to see on the channel.
excelente, muchas gracias no me funcionaba cuando escribía localhost: 5000 y debía ser localhost:5000,
Glad it worked in the end. I think because I use if quite often my browser may have auto-changed it to not have the space in it, my bad!
It says, "This package is no longer supported." In the command prompt while downloading Grunt. What to do?
Hey Tom thanks for the great tutorial. Will you be making more adapt content?
What would you like to see in future videos @Clyde Eugene Makamure?
@@InstructionalDesignTips I would love to see tutorials on how do create actual courses. I've dabbled with adapt in the past and honestly got frustrated. But the cost keeps bringing me back so this time I want to commit to learning the platform so that I can make some material for my classes
@@clydeugene We have a few things planned, but we'll certainly add this to the list.
@@InstructionalDesignTips great, I've subbed and I look forward to the tutorials
@@InstructionalDesignTips That would be extremely helpful. I bet many users will start flocking this channel when you continue to build on this video. I will be spreading the word. You are such a great communicator!
Holy crap! That worked!! Thx
Happy to hear you got on okay with the install process.
Hi Tom, thank you for this :)
Would you be able to share us some tips & tricks in creating courses in Adapt Authoring Tool?
I am working on this, but I don't get to use Adapt as much as I'd like outside of NDA work. I would strongly suggest checking out Adapt.Tips as they are a dedciated channel and podcast just looking at Adapt.
Doesn't work as shown anymore. Apparently it needs a specific node version. It shows it needs version 12 or 14, but then it also needs to be a LTS version that was generated using lockfileVersion@2...? I couldn't find that version, tried it with 3 different setup files.
thanks, so helping
You're most welcome.
I'm not a developer, but I know that developers gave their time to build this....is it difficult and time consuming to make an exe that does this? or do they just assume we're all tech smart.
This is actualy something I know the project is looking at. There are a range of challenges involved in that (much smarter people than me would know).
Fingers crossed this happens one day, but until then, hopefully this helps make it a little mroe accessible for people.
@@InstructionalDesignTips Adapt does Branching. It seems like somebody could use branching to make a walk-through like TurboTax...how it guides people through a process....with decisions that lead to download links and the next steps.
Excellent tutorial, thanks. Do you have any tips on replacing / editing the vanilla theme?
Hi Sian! This is something I will try and get a video made on in the future, but it might be a while. I would suggest checking out Mel's fantastic article on this process here : elearningindustry.com/adapt-authoring-tool-project-5-tips-styling
@@InstructionalDesignTips Thanks for Sharing.
Could you done of these for OSX installation?
Hey Pedro, I can certainly give it a go. I'll try and get something up over the weekend!
@@InstructionalDesignTips Update: I followed along your video and was able to get it installed! The differences in installation method between Windows and Mac is what through me off, but was able to get it eventually.
Hi Tom,
Thanks so much for this! The installation worked beautifully. However, after successfully accessing the website via localhost:5000 something popped-up on my screen (I think it was Windows firewall) and - stupidly - I didn't read it before clicking on it. Duh! I am furious with myself.
I think I may have activated a firewall which is now preventing me from accessing Adaptive Learning. The error message says check your firewall. Any advice on how I should I deal with this would be much appreciated. PS. I use Norton 360 - not sure if that is relevant.
Chances are you'll need to create exceptions in the firewall for all the prerequesites for running adapt. I'm afraid I know nothing about using Norton, but this would be a good place to start.
Hi Tom, I have followed your instructions but cannot log in. The username or password is incorrect. Tried again to reset the password, but it did not work. Do you have any idea why this might be happening? Thanks.
For this I would go to the adapt forum for better advice.
Hi, really great instructions. But after it all its coming up as "Install was unsuccessful. Please check the console output." I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but still no joy :(
I would start by ensuring all the prerequisites have been installed properly and are running. It's also worth checking the version numbers as anything beyond mongo 14 tends to cause issues.
If that all looks okay, I would suggest and reset and trying again from the install point. If you still have no luck, the Adapt forum might be able to provide more support as you can then share screenshots etc.
I am getting an ECONNREFUSED error to do with the database? Any clues?
This may be a conflict with the port being used. I would suggest changing the port you're connecting the instance to.
@@InstructionalDesignTips I don't think there is a conflict. Does running a newer version of node cause an issue as I do have an error saying version should be between 12 and 14 and the lts version is 18.
Ah yes! Running a newer version has caused a lot of issues recently. Roll back the version and then try again.
@@InstructionalDesignTips I couldn't work out how to roll back so ended up using nvm to install 14.
@@philtowle4683 That's exactly how I do it!
didnt work for me..said failed to set app.db
did you get this to work, this may be that you have not install and started Mongodb correctly. I am trying to get this to work on Ubuntu and got this message
@@brianthird4173 no I got frustrated ... I deleted all... maybe some day it will have an exe file :)
Hey, sorry I'm late responding. Anything relating to the database (db) usualy means that mongo was either not installed, not actively running, or was in conflict with another program (though this last one is very rare).
I appreiciate this process can be a little frustrating and often involved on the fly problem solving. If you ever want to have another go, please feel free to reach out and I'll support as much as required.
thanks for this.
it worked until the npm command.
it gives me 'deprecated' warnings, vulnerability notices etc. my windows 10 computer is brand new. I don't get it.
just for a second, I thought I was doing so well. blah.
Hi Maroosh De, this shouldn't cause any issue. The depreciations are within the actual github codes. You should have the option to move on (i always get this, no matter what)
Thank you very much for the great video. But I have a problem if i try to login, there is written "Invalid password or username". But i am sure i have given the right password and email.
That's an odd one. I have never had this issue myself (being someone who forgets passwords the moment I create them). If the details are correct for the user you created during set up, it might be that the database where the user data is being stored isn't connecting as it should. Try restarting your MongoDB instance and see if that helps.
@@InstructionalDesignTips Thank you. But i am not really good with tech 😅.
I followed your instructions. But now i have closed every programm. How do i start/run adaptlearning?
Once you've restarted Mongo DB you'll need to open the command prompt window, navigate to your adapt folder (like you did during the installation process) and and issue the node server command, just as you did when launching it for the first time. I would also suggest making sure you don't have any outstanding windows updates as these can sometimes cause issues.
@@InstructionalDesignTips So, i deleted everything and started your instruction video again. Before, i updated windows. But in the end of the installation process i got the same problem: "Invalid email address or password".
I dont know what to do. How do i start mongodb? If i type mongo in the searchbar in windows, it only finds MongoDBCompass. I hope you can help me.
@@InstructionalDesignTips Ahh thanks, now i know the problem with the email. But now I have closed every programm. How do i run adapt. Ist this the right way? 1. i started command prompt as an admin. 2. I typed in "cd C:\Users\Documents\Adapt authoring files". 3. I typed in "node server". 4. I started webbrowser and typed in "localhost:5000". It doesnt work, have i forgot something?
After two days of trying to install i found your video, it was uploaded 2 days ago which saved me. Thank you. now i think i made big mistake, i wanted to downgrade framework from 5.7.1 to 5.7.0 and started npm install i realized that i didnt exported my course, only copied my course from "temp" folder. After going back to 5.7.1 and pasting files in temp folder Adapt cant see my course. Maybe you will know how to fix it?
Hi, so far as I know, without the exported source code of the course you might not be able to move it over. I've never tried this myself, but would highly recommend heading over to the Adapt community forums. The folk there are super helpful.
community.adaptlearning.org/mod/forum/view.php?id=4
Sorry I can't be of more direct help and do let me know if you find a solution as I'd be interested to know.
@@InstructionalDesignTips Thank you for reply. I've solved it by recreating it, luckly i copied all files. In this moment finishing last animations :)
Well, it may not have been the perfect fix, but I'm glad it's worked!
Will this work for Windows 11?
I don't believe the underlying windows stuff has really changed much in the update. That said, I have yet to test it myself.
I can't see a reason I wouldn't work.
@@InstructionalDesignTips fab thanks !
Tried it with Windows 11 and it did not work.
