Sonoran Hot Dogs with Homemade Pinto Beans

- These Sonoran Hot Dogs may be our new favorite hot dogs to make! Wrapped in bacon, perfectly cooked on the griddle, and topped with homemade pinto beans, pico de gallo, and a simple sour cream and mayo mixture, this Sonoran Hot Dog recipe takes the classic hot dog to another level!
When I first heard about the popular Southwest hot dog, I immediately thought “Yuck”, who would put those Mexican ingredients on a bacon-wrapped hot dog? But then I tried them and I was hooked!
For the Homemade Pinto Beans:
- 16 oz bag dry pinto beans - Soak the dry beans overnight in a large bowl of water, rinse and drain the next day
- 1 onion, small diced
- 3 cloves garlic, rough chopped
- 1 smoked ham hock (Usually available in the meat department of the grocery store)
- 4 cups chicken stock
- 2 cups water
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 jalapeno, seeded and small diced
- 1/2 teaspoon Mexican oregano
- 1 tablespoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 tablespoon salt
- Add all ingredients to a large Crock Pot with the rinsed and drained beans. Cook on high for about 6-7 hours. You can allow the beans to cool a bit and refrigerate overnight, and reheat in a pan on the stovetop the next day for the Sonoran hot dogs.

As an Arizona native - I approve of this video.
Sonoran style Mexican food is my all time fave to this day.
Born and raised. Grew up in Queen Creek and Mesa. Now in Casa Grande. Love Sonoran Hispanic food. But my all time is a Chicago Dog and Italian Beef
OH BOY, who-da thunk-it!!! This will be at the top of the TA-EET list. Glad you brought this idea back home with you. I literally can eat pinto beans 3 meals a day and will be eating them on a hotdog (which I detest) just because I remember how good they tasted when I was young 70 years plus ago. Plus with the Indian Fry Bread that doc says is not good for me at this age. I'm looking for a different doctor. Thanks for sharing with us. Fred.
Those electric fly swatters are easily one of the most fun and useful gadgets ever. Dogs looked delicious!
hhahahha True...shoulder is sore
Had my first Sonoran dog in Tucson in 2009 - they are life changing!
I have had these sanoran hot dogs years ago in AZ. I used to make them but had forgotten about them until this video.
Love Sonoran hotdogs! Good video. Glad you used the bollilo bun.. Try Mexican crema as a topping also
Looks great. Have not made a Sonoran Dog in several years. I need to change that. I am a griller guy. But am wanting to get into the griddle game to now. I have a folder on my work drive. It contains a lot of tips and tricks on how I do what I do and be the best at what I do.I am in the process of deleting that folder. That will be August or September when completely deleted. Then I am done. My retirement gift to myself will be a Black Stone Flat Top. Thank you for these videos. I learn a lot.
I just introduced our friends here in the RGV to Sonoran hotdogs a few weeks back. I cooked mine on my pellet grill though and used Costco 1/4+ pound all beef hot dogs. For buns I used bolillo rolls, widely available here in the Valley. I smeared refried beans on the buns for those that were “adventuresome” and they agreed, the beans were a great addition. Anyway, I’ll watch your video now and see how I could’ve improved my own version. FYI our first time eating them was in Tucson. They are great!
Hey Neil, thanks from Germany for what you are doing. Beside all the cool recipes, I just bought a Spanish plancha flat top grill with a 12 mm rolled steel surface. Now, having it is one thing, mastering is another. I learned so much from your videos and I love watching them. Keep on cooking for is man!
Greetings from the Texas panhandle! I made this tonight and it was fantastic! I also noticed that the bacon was sort of lost in all the other flavors. I’m not sure if you were trying to set Amy up for some sophomoric humor with the “just the tip” line, but kudos to her for not taking the bait. If I’m totally reading that wrong, please forgive. I teach high school sooo….
Love Sonora dogs and hadn’t thought of make them on griddle. Thanks for the inspiration. Glad you enjoyed our state. Would love to hear what restaurants you enjoyed.
I live just outside of Phoenix and just made Sonoran hotdogs yesterday on the Blackstone! I'll be in Tennessee again next week for another 2 week trip. Love the food there! Great video Flat Top King and Queen!
Hey thank you...absolutely loved our trip...old scottsdale, Phoenix, and Sedona...up to Flagstaff
Mmmmmmmm, That hot dog looked great, glad you liked Phoenix so much. You should have come up north a bit to Prescott, AKA, God's Country. But I'm glad you two enjoyed Arizona so much. We love it here. Take care and stay safe in East TN.
Made these over the weekend, minus the beans. One of the best things I've done on the flat top so far. The backyard was smelling awesome.
Heck yeah..cheers
Happy Birthday to your wonderful wife !!
TY
Looks delicious! I make a hotdog sauce using hamburger, catsup, mustard, onion, relish, salt, pepper, brown sugar and hersheys cocoa powder. Recipe calls for kraut but I’ve never used it. It sure dresses up a hotdog. But, beans and pico on a bacon dog….wow!
That’s is almost like skyline chili from Cincinnati Ohio look it up its AMAMZING
Happy 76th, Amy! These are totally different, but look awesome! I'm not a huge bean fan, but for me maybe refried beans might work. Also, my neighbor just got a Blackstone. He asked me if I knew anything about them. So, I quickly said NO and ran off (J/K) But I did send him to your page, and Adam & Brett. We'll elevate the world 1 griddle at a time!
hahah Thanks bud...Hope all is well..
Bravo zulu. That's a new one to me. I worked at a joint base down in Pearl Harbor and learned some Navy terms, but BZ is a new one to me.
Those look amazing! Would also love the restaurant guide for phoenix.
Sonoran dogs are always bomb! You did a great job Neal!!
thanks bud....
Happy Birthday Amy! 🎂
I can't wait to make these dogs. Looks totally easy.
Absolutely delicious lookin' hotdogs. This is definitely a must try for me. Awesome video, Neil & Amy.👍👍
Pinto beans are my favorite bean. Those hot dogs look so yummy. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMY!
TY
I just moved to Phoenix and would love to have recommendations for some good restaurants. Please post a list!
Another dish to try.....Great video Neal and Amy!
Thank Thomas
Great cook. I'm going to have to try this soon!
Great looking dog, thanks for bringing it to us
My wife and I always stop for a Sonoran Hot dog when we are in Arizona. Love ‘em
Absolutely
My dogs have two things that they absolutely love. Pizza and ham hocks(we call them knuckles).
for the white stuff try a mayo, cilantro, cracked black pepper and lime juice. ratios up to you but more mayo then the others.
also to me personally i find the ranch style beans tend to boost the hot dog up for ppl that dont wanna do the beans
I tagged you in the one I made a couple years ago. I’ll have to try your version
Absolutely...thanks
I live 30 minutes north of Phoenix. My wife and I would have loved to take you to dinner
We're in Arizona and make Sonoran Hot Dogs. Although ours vary slightly.
Man I love em....so good...
Will definitely have to try this one. Looks awesome
It's so good!
Fantastic Sonoran dog! Happy to hear you enjoyed your visit to Arizona👍😊
Thanks Bobbi
A Big Happy Birthday to you Amy 🎂🎉🎉
Thanks bud
That's a great looking dog. The beans could def eat like a meal on their own too
Sounds and looks amazing, I haven’t made homemade pinto Beans in years, I will try this!
Great video!
I have those bug rackets too, great for the mosquitoes!!!!!
Hope you enjoy....shoulder is sore..hahaha
We were issued those shocker racquets in Iraq during my first tour in '04 for the mosquitos that were all over the place. And yes, of course we would prank our buddies by sneaking up behind them and shock them. 😆😆 The dogs look great and I'm going to try them on the Blackstone.
ahhahah Completely understand hahaha
I’ve been waiting a HOT Min for this one my brotha ✊🏼🧐! Sonoran or even a Cali dog variation, YES PLEASE. I knew y’all would enjoy it. And shoot, I hope you can do a fry bread Indian/Navajo taco episode.. if that’s something you think you would like. I think you just might. Anywho, Super dope cook my guy…. Cheers y’all 👊🏼😎🤙🏼😊
Absolutely.....cheers bud
Dude that looks delicious!! Almost reminds me of borracho beans which I love🤤🤤👍🏻👍🏻
yes sir....might have a chance to go duck hunting in Mizz in early Dec....we shall see
And a "bravo zulu" to you as well!
Love your vids!
Thank you kindly!
Amy, you are rocking 76 years of age! 😁 ❤️
hahahahaha she said.....i should have edit that out..hahahha
Baked beans with Hotdogs and Bacon would be a hit so why not the other way around? If you like the Black label bacon you'd like Wright and believe it or not Walmart's brand of thick sliced bacon they have in the 3lb packs is pretty good too. If you're trying to save calories Non-fat Greek yogurt (from a premium brand) is an awesome sub for sour cream! BTW it was great to see the Lady behind the camera! I was wondering if you were going to make Her like "Wilson" the neighbor in "Tool time" and have something blocking most of Her in every shot. lol Happy Birthday Special Lady!
Looks good ! I made a pot of pinot beans the other day with chopped bacon, onion, garlic, diced jalapeño, diced celery, FlatIron pepper Co seasoning, pinto beans and roasted hot pepper in tomatoes. I like my pinto beans spicy……no spice not nice!!!
Hey Neil, since you can't do the direct heat ribs. I have another suggestion. I saw a RUclips video today. The guy took Captain Crunch and pounded it into a powder. He took Tuna and cut them into maybe1inch by 1 inch and 6 inches long. Oiled, seasoned and coated with the cereal. Seared all sides quickly and sliced into bite size pieces. Then served over Japanese mayo and Siracha. Looked good. I would like to see your take.
Geeze....good and bad...ill take a look...thanks
BTW. It was Sam, the cooking guy.
6:49 - "just the tip." Reminds me of one of the first episodes of Archer. 😂🤣
ahahahha
That looks good guys , but to be honest I never heard of it. But I am gonna try it. THANK YOU FRANK FROM MONTANA.......
Definitely a regional thing...but well worth it
I see you went to Pizzeria Bianco. Best pizza in the world!
I would like to hear the restaurants you loved here in the greater Phoenix area. And there is a Sonoran dog truck on Bell near 28th street that is supposed to be pretty good for any other locals. Nice work on creating a Tucson original! And yeah, the Indian fry bread is pretty dope. I think they were more popular when I was a kid and most of the times it was served with honey and powdered sugar.

Try not cutting the bolillo bun through all the way to the ends. Then stuff the hot dog down into the bun. And I’d guess the white sauce was probably Mexican Crema which is similar to what you made - a runnier version of sour cream with some lime added. We added or I had available, similar condiments for my friends to add, such as diced onion, jalapeños, Pico de gallo plus some shredded Mexican Blend cheese.
I'll probably cut a few corners and cheat with premade pico and doctored up canned pinto beans but I will making these.
Absolutely.....no doubt...

What is the brand of your black cutting board?

Boss, I've never heard of this dish, but I could surely see a few of them going down my gullet. It sounds and looks great. PS: Pull my finger 👉
ahhaha absolutely..made refried beans out of the leftovers
Never thought about pinto beans on a dog ....😮 but love them both , so why not !
G O V O L S ...!
GBO....
What is the secret to getting the hotdogs heated all the way through we’re new to the Blackstone and the first couple of times we’ve made hotdogs. They don’t get hot all the way it seems like they have to cook a lot longer than they would on a regular grill what’s the secret?
Maybe lower temp...so they dont burn...maybe add water and steam with dome...also you could take out the refrigerator sooner...to warm up before putting down
Electric Fly Swatter...MEH...Salt gun Baby! (Bug-A-Salt)
hahaha true...
Seriously and you didn't bring me my Weber Griddle... Muy Brueno
hahaha had a blast for sure
@TheFlatTopKing this was a great I really enjoyed both of your excitement over the recipe
No nitrites, 100% grass fed hotdog 🌭 I can do every once in a while. Sausages even better. Looks great. As an option could tear out some bread for better fit or put it all in a tortilla or pita bread.
NO BEANS IN CHILLI!!! If you add beans to chilli, it is called chilli beans, not chilli. ;-) Great video sir, as always. BOOMER SOONER!!!
hahahaha Go VOLS
It looks good but the beans are a no for me I just don't eat them .. Look forward to the other trip inspired recipes .
Catch a wasp in that electric toy and it will try to sting it while it’s lightning him up. Pretty interesting.😬

Sorry, not for me

thats your comment...ahhahahah
