Amon Amarth is the Sindarin name of Mt. Doom from Lord of the rings
Many of the characters in Lord of the Rings books are from the Poetic Edda. Mainly the dwarf names.
Didn't know that
For non nerds this means elf shit
LOL, had no idea
@@rbfleischer3 Even the name of the world is from norse mythology. Midgard in old norse means Middle earth in english.
People in the comments: it’s Viking Metal!
Me who’s got drunk with the band at Wacken and spoken to Johan Hegg: no, it’s Melodic Death Metal with Viking Themes. As said by Johan himself
Viking Metal is....not a sub genre
Viking Metal is a sub-genre. Just not of Death Metal.
Viking metal is very much a sub genre
Same as with Alestorm disliking the title of pirate metal
Some would say the band Finntroll is Epic Heathen Pirate Polka Metal. Therefore Viking Metal must also exist.
Lyrical themes doeoes not define a genre. It's a style/sound that makes a genre. There are a lot of Metal bands with Viking themes and all of them sound different from one another. Remove the lyrics from Amon Amarth's songs and you get Melodic Death Metal.
The band's name is "Mount Doom" from Lord of the Rings in the Sindarin language.
Every album they release follows a specific group of stories from Norse Paganism. I'm Norse Pagan myself so I follow this band heavily. It's our heritage and culture as Scandanavians.
SKÅL!!
skål
@@michaelkrause1338 skål brodyr!
I'm a Scottish pagan but I might become Norse I'm part Norse and Scottish so I chose one
schenket ein.
Check out more of their songs, please! "The Hero", "Under The Northern Sky", "Embrace Of The Endless Ocean", "Raven's Flight", and "Crack The Sky" are some good ones to check out.
you forgot Cry of the Black Birds and Death in Fire! \m/
I know you recognized a few of them, but the last part of the video had a bunch of rockstars, both old and new, raising beer horns. They included members of Nightwish, Anthrax, Megadeth, Disturbed, Trivium, Volbeat, Overkill, Slayer, Mercyful Fate, Overkill, Avatar, etc. it’s really amazing that they got all those people to take part in it.
I got surprised when I saw the singer from sabaton.
Forgot Nergal from Behemoth filliping everyone off at the end! lol
You forgot The Metal Queen herself, Doro at 10:30
@@Pingouinator yeah I couldn’t remember what her name was 🤣
Also Jessica Pimentel from Brujeria
Amon Amarth is Tolkien Elvish for Mount Doom.
Amon Amarth - In Pursuit Of Vikings (Live Summer Breeze) should definitely be next! Or, if you want to hear some female-fronted death metal, I recommend Arch Enemy- My Apocalypse as a perfect starting point
I saw Amon Amarth and Arch Enemy last October. It was amazing
From Amon Amarth.... You NEED to check out:
Twilight of the Thunder God
Pursuit of Vikings
Destroyer of the Universe
Guardians of Asgard.
That will teach you about Viking Metal for real :D
Death metal with viking theme lyrics, not viking metal bro
bruh you missed shield wall
They are cattle horns, carved, treated and dressed. You can obtain them from their online store Grimfrost, they are not expensive, I have 2 myself. Traditional Norse drinking implement that is usually filled with Mead (Honey based alcohol).
Not much of a rap fan a huge metal (amon amarth being my favorite band) thank you for enjoying this stuff and appreciating obscure music! Raise your horns!
Also for what its worth the band's name is a Lord of the Rings reference, its the Elvish name for Mount Doom in the fictional language of Sindarin
This is a perfect Viking drinking song.
Nah, that goes to Korpiklaani "Happy Little Boozer" :P
AGREED
@@eduardomendesvieira2561 that's a Finnish Folk drinking song.
Twilight of the Thundergod is definitely their best song
You need to listen more Amon Amarth lol
@@qelipothaumiel I've listened to all of their albums and seen them live multiple times. I still think it's their best song :)
Guardian's of asgaard is my favorite song of theirs. Twilight of the thunder God, is a great one too though, and father of the wolf.
Im gonna say Gods of war arise.
Father of the Wolf
Runes to my memory
Fate of norns
Tattered banners and bloody flags
For victory or death.
All amazing songs too
"Amon Amarth" is High Elven(Lord of the Rings/Silmarillion) for "Mount Doom" where the ring from Lord of the Rings was formed
My fav tune from them is "where silent gods stand guard"
This is one of my favorite songs ever, especially as a war veteran. Awesome reaction. Keep up the content
You guys are musicians and like music. That is what makes your channel good...you know what you are talking about. Keep up the good stuff :)
"Death in fire", "pursuit of vikings", or "twilight of the thunder god" are great songs by amon amarth, all of which get great responses at live performances. Great band, love to see more. Keep it going guys
I doubt anyone would be upset about Twilight of the Thunder God.
Hollywood: "we're two intelligent people"
Smokey: *rolls his eyes* "some would say" lol
I love it haha.
My two cents, you guys don't know everything (me either, go figure ha) but you ask questions when you don't know. You both are genuinely inquisitive and open minded, which is usually a sign of an intelligent person 😁. Keep up the good vibes 👍
Kreator - Hail to the Hordes. Kind of in the same vain. Not about drinking per se, but about and for the fans. Gets me kind of into the same mood as Raise your Horns
Grog was a mix between water and rum drank by sailors in the pre colonial days. Mead is a honey wine drank by vikings and others predating grog.
And grogg today in sweden is just soda and booze
Horns are harvested from cows and bison that are slaughtered agriculturally. Certain bones can be illegal to own without permits in certain states, but in the US there aren't too many rules about things like deer and smaller mammals (I collect most of mine from roadkill). And finally, grog was water and rum. Sailors made it to keep their water supplies from going stagnant on long voyages.
Oh, and you guys should check out the full length video for "Father of the Wolf" by Amon Amarth. It will make your beard grow a beard.
Amon Amarth put on a great show, seen them live a couple of times. When they get up on stage and all windmill in time with one another, it's really easy to just get swept up in the energy.
Haha. Cool that you reacted to this one. I entered my video and Amon Amarth put me in. Was really cool when I watched it for the first time 🤘
I've seen them in concert and I can honestly say that it is hands down the best concert I've ever been to
You two are infectiously happy. I'd watch you guys just for that
It took 6:05 for them to actually start reacting.
Edit.
Please warn when you are going to rewind, some of us are high here.
Johan Hegg is probably one of the most down to earth and genuinely kindest singers/musicians Ive ever met... Dude has been a beast for decades and is so humble its disarming. On top of that, they are one of the few metal bands that actually sounds better live.
- AT DOWNS FIRST LIGHT incredible official video
- THE PURSUIT OF VIKINGS live at wacken. Exceptional song and performance
A knowledge of Latin can help demystify medical conditions and it's important if you're going to pursue a career in medicine
The name is the one of J.R.R. Tolkiens ideas. Its the name of a mountain in his simarilion (thats what i know so far)
No. It's named for the mountain in Lord of the Rings. It means Mount Doom in the language of Mordor.
@@DKfan87 Yes, it means mount Doom but not in the dark language but in Quenya, language of the high elves and of Valinor
@@esalaine4711 I realized that after I made the comment. So, that's definitely a my bad.
You guys should listen to their song "one thousand burning arrows". That one gives me the shivers every time hearing it!
never really liked this band, until I saw them twice live a couple of years ago in Slovenia and blew me away! Amazing stage show!
Latin is still a spoken and evolving language surprising enough.
French, Spanish and Italian are based off of Latin. English is based off of a very early Germanic language.
Also gonna drop some knowledge, grog is a specific drink which was popular on ships and of a relatively low ABV, mead however is honey wine and very much readily available at your local liquor store, as well as being very popular with the norse people (vikings) and just about every other ancient culture roman through ancient Egypt, as for my suggestion. THE BERSERKER AT STAMFORD BRIDGE- AMON AMARTH
This is why The Trash Talkers are better than Google
Some of those people in the video are metal legends. That's how good this song and this band is.
Voivod is French Canadian, and Snake (the singer) writes lyrics in French, and has them translated into English, because in order for most bands to make money, you need to tap into the American audience
The meaning of the name "Amon Amarth" is actually from the novel "The Lord Of The Rings". Amon Amarth is the Sindarin Elvish name for "Mount Doom". Amon = Mount/Mountain/Hill - Amarth = Fate/Doom. Mount Doom is where The One Ring was forged by Celebrimbor unbeknownst to the evil intentions of the 2nd Dark Lord, Sauron, for whom the ring was made for. Also the location where The One Ring was destroyed. Its a site of Destiny.
Amon Amarth is also the name of a volcano
Regarding horns: yes, these are from oxen. The inside of the horn will be carved out and the horn itself is covered in some sort of food-safe coating. This makes it harder to maintain and the horns as a natural product come in all shapes and sizes. But luckily nowadays horns can be produced by additive manufacturing (3D printing f.e.). Those are made of plastic, but very practical and they'll last pretty much forever.
Loads of Metal legends in that video. This has been around for awhile... y'all can jump in the loop anytime you want, yes ox or cattle horns... but a good bit re fake molded plastic and painted. Loads of bands that have that sound out there... find them if y'all are Really interested
Apocalyptica is a Finnish band that made a big splash doing covers of Metallica all on cellos. 4 cellists covering heavy metal songs. They since moved on to doing originals. Still good but it was their cover work that got them noticed way back when
Amon amarth just makes us feel exactly like that...go viking
Viking metal started with bathory in the late 80’s early 90’s, Quorthon player viking Metal from 88 until his death in 2004.
this band is amazing. when i heard my first song by them, i fell in love. the only other metal band that did that for me was kataklysm. you dont hear about them, because its not main stream.
You should absolutely react to Brothers of Metal, you're gonna love it.
That guy flying was prolly a blow-up doll (maybe filled with helium).
You see those every now and then at festivals
Welcome to the world of Viking Metal. Amon Amarth is the elvish name of Mount Doom in the Lord of the Rings books. Their songs are pretty much all about being a Viking, the Norse gods like Thor and Odin, and drinking. Their newest album was based on the TV show "Vikings."
to answer your question about "grog"...Grog is any of a variety of alcoholic beverages. The word originally referred to a drink made with water and rum, from the British Navy in the 1700s.
8:13 It's viking-themed, but it's Melodic Death Metal.
And you should check out
Twilight of the Thunder God
Way of Vikings
Guardians of Asgaard
as a native american, keeping your language is core to your culture. If the language dies, the culture dies. Hearing our elders converse in our own language is beautiful to hear.
Also, what blizzard games you play? Classic or retail wow? Been hitting classic hard lately.
Also, a wicked side note, there's so many artists from different bands throughout this music video that raised their horns with each other.
GROG is what pirates drink.
Vikings drink MEAD in vallhala
World of Warcraft player here Hollywood. Actually currently on the public test realm looking at the Shadowlands prepatch. Duke Llama actually might be more Fortnite than WoW.
I do think a lot of foreign groups, do seem to target English speakers. Bigbang who I've mentioned are actually Korean and song names are also in English and most songs have partial English if not all English.
Raise your horns is a little too harsh for me, I personally prefer melody over growling, but each to their own and I'd def say Viking Metal.
I believe it's possible to get manufactured horns, plastic etc. Much more friendly to animals. Personally as long as they come from animals that are already dead, it doesn't bother me.
hell yea bro, thanks for this
This band is viking in every way.
Yes.. it was Floor from NW (Inthinknit was her you did notice). There is a lit of well knowned metal bands. Talking about the horns. johan (the singer) has a company where they sell viking equipment called Grimfrost :)
FEAR FACTORY FEAR FACTORY FEAR FACTORY FEAR FACTORY FEAR FACTORY!!!! POWERSHIFTER OR FEAR CAMPAIGN!!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!
LOL WE SEE YOU IAN
@@Hollywood6IX did you know lol is actually the Dutch word for "fun"?
Everyone thinks it's an abbreviation for "laughing out loud", but that's just dumbfucks trying to give meaning to something they don't understand.
Back in the day of SMS, MSN and ICQ n stuff when most of the messaging services were limited to a certain amount of symbols (y'know like Twitter is nowadays) people got "creative" with stuff like w8 sk8 4eva. Back then if a Dutch person thought something was "funny" (in Dutch "lollig") they would comment with "lol", eventually the word went international. I've actually once seen the forum where it happened . It was a Dutch counterstrike forum discussing pros and cons of various weapons in the game. At some point a Frenchman joined in trying to talk to these guys through one of those gen1 Internet translators that didn't work at all. At first the Dutchmen were kinda annoyed and tried to ignore him, but the Frenchy didn't let up. So they decided to just teach him Dutch. The one thing he didn't understand at first was the seemingly random use of the word "lol". So he asked what that was about and Dutch explained it to him.
I guess it took a life of its own from there.
Here's some other Dutch words you're using that you're prolly not aware of:
Boss comes from baas, Dollar stems from daalder (two n half guilders, which is what a dollar is worth in our old currency, we have the €uro now).
Others have said it, Twilight of the Thunder God. It's a must.
After reacting to it, you must drive on a dark stormy night where there is lighting cracking the sky while listening to the song at full blast at speeds of over 100mph. Then you will know life.
Saw them live in Houston. They were awesome.
Love Amon Amarth!!!!!! Also love that both Floor from Nightwish and Nergal from Behemoth were in the video! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Viking metal is so good. Amon amarth is one of the best at it. You should do destroyer of the universe
Ohhhh hell yeah...... this band is incredible thanks fellas.
As always, guys, awesome reaction! If you guys want another great song by Amon Amarth to react to, then I recommend Guardians of Asgard or Back On Northern Shores. I also really enjoyed your reaction to Krigsgaldr by Heilung, and would like to request a reaction to their performances of In Maidjan (Maria does one hell of a job on her solo part) or Othan from the LIFA concert, or the studio track of their song Traust. I think you both would highly enjoy all three of those.
Grog was what they called the rum rations on naval ships in the 17-19 centuries. The vikings drank mead .
A lot of legends in this one
Great choice fellas they have great live show their from sweden most their music is based on their viking heritage. twightlight of the thunder god, guardians of asguard, pursuit of the vikings, father of the wolf, gods of war arise all good songs , pirates drink grog theres big festivals like bloodstock, wakken, download, 70,000 tons of metal (Caribbean Cruise) use to be one called Paganfest (alot of folkmetal bands)
Grog is water with rum added to it. It killed the bacteria in the water and kept it from going bad. It also tended to give everyone a nice mellow rolling buzz😂
Epic. Swedish. Melodic. Viking. Death Metal.
I think "grog" was a British naval thing in the 1700s. It was a drink made with either rum and water or rum and ale. I seem to remember it being mentioned on an episode of QI (that's a panel show here in the UK where the panelists are asked questions on quite interesting facts, hence the name "QI").
In your heilung vid you asked about pirate metal. Best I've found is Alestorm
Amon Amarth- The Pursuit of Vikings
Guys, check out Enslaved. It's a progressive/black/viking metal. Great stuff. Their bassist/vocalist is in the video btw.
Me: I'm a real man...I have a beard
Johan Hegg: Hold my horn😎
One of my favorite songs ever!
That man is ascending to valhalla
You guys should check out “At Dawns First Light” by Amon Amarth
Amon Amarth is Norwegian or Danish, the english way of saying it is Mt. Doom, they honesty are one of my favorite death metal bands of all time, such amazing people
Swedish
"Wait was that who I think it was?" Yep.
Yo was that Dave Mustaine at 10:54?
Yes and other Cameos every second.
Mead is the drink of Vikings. Grog is watered down rum. usually the Horns are Bull or cattle horn.
For Amon Amarth...
Twilight of the thunder god
Guardians of Asgard
Sheild wall
Also see Ensiferum, a similar band with a Finnish take on Viking Metal. And that's the challenge for you sweet gentlemen... When you can hear the difference between Swedish, Finnish and Norwegian styles of metal, you know you're getting into your heavy music..
The band takes its name from the Sindarin (Elvish languages ) name of Mount Doom, a volcano in J. R. R. Tolkien′s Middle-earth
Lost in vegas see their reactions 🤘🏼 especially the way they react to tool 🤘🏼
English is spoken in the most countries but is not the most common language most of these bands will do thier songs in their native language , also the reason to learn Latin is that it makes it much easier to learn most other languages . All western languages are Latin based and if you speak Latin and one other Latin based language you can understand most conversations in other Latin based languages
Uh MAHN UH MAARTH
AMON AMARTH - The Pursuit of Vikings - Live at Summer Breeze (OFFICAL)
Latin was the official language of academia and government in many european countries for nearly a thousand years after the fall of rome, so there's a lot of historical documents out there in latin. Much like English today, educated people used latin to communicate as there were hundreds of languages.
Swedish word
Grogg is a alcholic beverage with only 2 ingridients like rum and coke, if you have more than 2 its a drink
If no one have mentioned this, this video is full of cameos of people from other metal bands and even a cameo of Samwise Didier of blizzard entertainment.
Twilight of the Thundergod. Def their most popular song.
Mead is what vikings typically drank and those horns usually come from cattle or yak. I love you guys! Keep up the good work and listen to ironside
Another great viking metal band is called "SKálmöld". They are from Iceland and they did a live concert with the icelandic symphony orchestra in 2013. I would love to see your reaction to the song "Hel" from this concert. :-))) Just look for: Skálmöld & Sinfóníuhljómsveit Íslands - Hel
We are all sons of our Viking fathers. Thats why you feel it. SKOL
Vikings didn't run full speed into battles on horses. At best they could ride horses towards the battlegrounds, but they dismounted before charging.
Under Siege, Fafnir's Gold, Hero, & Tattered Banners all rock hard too.

Great reaction!
There is a Drink Horn Industry (!) over here in Germany.I even got some with Silver Edging....Greetz from Fenris/Germania
I have several horns made from real cattle but I buy them legally from the website GrimFrost. The vocalist of Amon Amarth is one of the owners of it
Man I played WoW for years. Kinda miss it, but damn that game will steal your soul 😂
You have to do Rivers of Nihil - The Silent Life. Perfect for a reaction
You guys should try some Týr or Korpiklaani..
(Good luck with THAT tongue twister.. 😈 specially Korpiklaani)
