  • Since the beginning of this journey, you all have been begging me to do Kamelot and Roy Khan. Well, it's finally here, and on my birthday no less! This trilogy of songs dig into the history of Elizabeth Bathory and her obsession with eternal life. It gets dark from there. Wait, why am I reacting to this on my birthday again?
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Kamelot for the very first time, performing "Elizabeth I, II & III".

Now she has done Tommy with Kamelot, Tommy with his other band, and tea time with Tommy - I hope she will do Roy with Conception and a tea time interview with him too! There are a lot of interviews with Roy where he explains his music education, talks about his musical influences, talks about leaving Kamelot - it would be great to have an Elizabeth interview covering his vocal style more specifically.

    • @kmacgregor6361
      @kmacgregor6361 2 года назад +9

Only question is what Conception song to do. For something from the new album I think I'd pick Waywardly Broken since it covers such a range of vocal style, but Feather Moves is so gorgeous and his voice so ethereal it'd be nice too. The other thing that would be cool to do is Silent Crying 2.0 which shows off his low range that she didn't hear much of on Elizabeth. If she did Silent Crying, she could also compare the new and original Silent Crying and talk about the difference in his voice and style over the years.

Now that you've listened to so many Nightwish songs you might as well get acquainted with another Finnish metal band, Amorphis. The singer is Tomi Joutsen, who's vocal range is something else. The song I'm recommending is called 'Amongst Stars' and it's basically a duet by Tomi Joutsen and Anneke van Giersbergen, the fabulous Dutch singer. So two amazing voices in the same song! Greatest reaction video of all time!!! Khan was indeed trained classically and has impressive natural vocal skills but what really sets him apart is his passion and intensity. He totally lives inside of these songs, better than anyone I've ever seen. So much so that he eventually burned himself out, emotionally and physically. The darkness he portrays so intensely was consuming him and going against his truly nice guy persona. He left the band and went on to become a minister for his local church to find good again. Watch the video for The Great Pandemonium to see him at his most intense evil, he left shortly after that. He has since returned with his previous band Conception, but it just isn't the same for me and many others, he definitely burned his voice out a good bit and the songs aren't this epic. Kamelot got a great replacement in Tommy Karevik, but it just isn't the same either. Khan and guitarist Thomas Youngblood were the perfect combo, neither is quite the same without the other.

The Thing about Roy, is that he is a trained opera singer, that switched to sing in rock in a band called "Conception" before Thomas found him and brought him on to Kamelot. After about 5 years with the band, his mentor told him that he was slowly eroding his voice because of how he sung in Kamelot, and he had to make a choice to be opera only, or lose it and be a rock/metal singer.... He choose Kamelot. He ultimately left the band years later because he began to burn out from touring constantly, and because of an instance that had him performing drunk on stage. He has since refound himself, and after a 6 year departure from performing, is now back with his original band "Conception"

One can never go wrong with Kamelot, and with Roy Khan. He's just brilliant, can't say it any better than that. Back when I was a kid, Kamelot was the band that got me into music (having only really heard your typical mainstream music up until then and just not caring much for it at all), but now I simply cannot live without it and have even, thanks to Kamelot and other bands I've discovered since, grown to appreciate your occasional mainstream piece.
My first concert was Kamelot, but my brother and I both found out that Roy had quit while we were at the hotel just about to head off to the concert, so I never got to hear him live. My brother was at the very concert in this video, which I gotta admit I'm pretty damn jealous for, ha ha. He's even seen headbanging with his head all bowed during one of the songs... But hey, the replacement vocalist for that concert that I did go to was Fabio Lione, who was the singer of another of my favourite bands, so at least I got that!

Edit: Now that I got the chance to watch the video, I'm glad you liked it! Roy is a true performer, he sings with such conviction, commanding the stage and always 'dripping' in emotion. Since you mentioned the likeness of his falsetto to the one heard in opera singers, he actually has an opera background in his home country of Norway. The woman portraying Elizabeth Bathory here is Mrs. Youngblood, the guitarist's wife and Simone Simons, the singer in Epica is the wife of the headbanging keyboardist haha. She actually joins Roy in this concert for a beautiful song called "The Haunting". To end my rambling I'll mention that Epica got their name from one of Kamelot's albums - that one and its sequel, The Black Halo are both linked concept albums following the story in Goethe's Faust. You are definitely one of my favorite reaction people. I love your passion for the music no matter the genre. I also appreciate how you explain the vocals and make it understandable for the non vocalist. Your innocent excitement of the music is inspiring. I love hearing things for the first time and being that enthralled with it.

Happy Birthday Elizabeth! The lady in the video is Mari Youngblood, the wife of guitarist Thomas Youngblood, and she is a singer in her own right. During Kamelot's tours they use guest female vocalists...more so on their two DVDs. Mari also appears on the song "Abandoned" during this same concert. Your reaction to "Abandoned" is a MUST see. A MUST!

The moment at 20:20 where Liz starts singing - I think this is a rare moment that is worth revisiting. I trust her analysis of singers - but hearing her try to recreate the moment in her own voice is super rare. - and all the more powerful because she was able to recreate the moment on the fly. Super cool. Worth doing more. It’s powerful and just makes Liz look like a badass.

Roy was always a very interesting guy to see live. Unlike a lot of metal frontmen, his performance itself was never that flashy or dramatic, but it was his singing itself that was special. To this day, it's a short list of singers with as distinct a voice. You know immediately when it's a Kamelot song because you recognize his voice and style instantly. Honestly, I think that's more impressive than any showmanship.

    Happy birthday, Elizabeth!
This was utterly delightful to watch! It was so much fun seeing you geek out over and be viscerally affected by one of my all time favourite vocalists. And when you got goosebumps, I had them too! So it was pretty cool sharing goosebumps through cyberspace, that's a new experience for me.
Kamelot has been one of my favourite bands since I discovered them about a decade ago. Absolutely phenomenal music. Especially the albums 'Epica' and 'The Black Halo', which as concept albums telling one continual story throughout, I would highly encourage you to listen to for pleasure in your own time, they're an awesome awesome emotional cinematic ride for the theatre of the mind.
As for recommendations to react to / analyse:
    From 'Epica':
    Descent Of The Archangel
    A Feast For The Vain
    On The Coldest Winter Night
    III Ways To Epica
    From 'The Black Halo':
    March of Mephisto
    The Haunting (Somewhere In Time)
    Abandoned
    Nothing Ever Dies
    Memento Mori
    Serenade
The vicarious joy of seeing your beautifully expressive self enjoying great music is a gift, (as is the vocal knowledge you share,) thank you!
