I now live comfortably I no longer have to worry about bills and I’m concerned on expanding my business. The point I’m trying to convey is the American dream is achievable through business. The means of starting a business in the age we live in is accessible to everyone including Black people. You may not know this being that you’re significantly older than me but what the Internet has done is provide a means for people to gain entry into a business or market with relative ease. If you don’t have a talent or aren’t super athletic The only way you will achieve the American dream is by starting a business. There are plenty of businesses with relatively low barrier for entry & little overhead needed. Mostly blue-collar work like moving or lawn care plumbing etc the list goes on. Interesting video. I find myself on the cusp of retirement wondering how this "American dream" passed me by. I did all right things, went to grad school, read the "Road to Success" books etc. but yeah I don't have it. I guess its because I refused to eat, sleep and drink "hustling" 24/7. At this point, I've learned to be content and thankful for what I have right now.

One thing I've learned over my 58 year's on this planet is that a dollar saved is a dollar earned! I still drive a Dodge van that I bought 21 year's ago for $2,000 and that's all I need. I had my girlfriend tell me a while back that I need to buy a new one because it was embarrassing to her as she scrimps together enough money for her next car payment, I just looked at her and laughed. I told her she goes before the van, it's been more loyal too me. I hate what life has become with this narcissistic look at me social media attitude, i'm all about substance. I carry around an old coin silver pocket watch I bought on Ebay three year's ago that was made in 1867 that winds with a key and keep's time within 15 second's a day and I think about all the people's lives that have carried it through the year's. I shine it up once a month and it still looks like it is new. The rat race sucks your soul out, and without a soul you are nothing!

We can all become so materialist only to realize that it is making us broke. My father told me that a car is only there to get you from point A to point B. So, you don’t need to spend $30,000 to do that. Many people need to change their mindset on how the approach this thing called life and understand that it is more than owning possessions. I was always taught that having a solid peace of mind is needed. It is so easy to get led down the wrong rabbit hole only to come up empty. Learn how to get what you need in life and don’t focus on trying to keep up with everyone else. It’s about making you happy. Thanks for your comment.

@@miltoncraft901 That's the point I would make in response to questions about "The American Dream." There is nothing wrong with the aspirational concept of "The American Dream." What I believe is wrong is the perversion of that dream. Corporate American, Madison Avenue (advertisers) and Mass Media are responsible for this perversion. They have successfully tricked society into believing "The American Dream" exists at only certain income/wealth points above a thresold intentionally set out of reach of the average person. They then use this "carrot on a stick" to tempt everyone to stretch beyond their means. Those hold accept the temptation often end up in a form of perpetual debtor's prison where they are forced to give up their life energy just to stay in the game. The movement toward minimalism is a vital key to breaking the spell cast by the perpetrators of this perversion of "The American Dream."

The problem with the "American Dream" is that a lot of people won't live within their means. If a $250k house will suffice, but they want a $400k house. A Toyota Camry will suffice, but they buy a Range Rover. They try to stretch a $100k annual household income to the appearance of a $250k income. From what I can see, that is the biggest issue. It's not the American Dream, it's the way people are executing it.

If the old folks won't listen and learn, keep informing yourselves and spreading the truth. I’ve said most people don’t even know what they like or even enjoy outside of their job. They don’t have hobbies or anything that brings peace to their lives or puts a smile in their heart. Why? Cause there’s no time 😳
Time is a valuable commodity but most don’t value it for the sake of working hard to buy “stuff” to appear successful while drowning in debt.
I believe in some cases the 2 income household led to the breakdown in the family. Family values are lost or not taught. Family time is nonexistent. Money fights are on the increase etc etc etc etc.

Truth. Truth. Truth. This notion of two parents always having to work just to make ends meet is totally overrated and people, like you said, never talk about the tole that takes on the family. My parents made the decision to live below their means in order for my mother to be able to stay home and build a home. We learned that we didn’t need everything, but we had the things that we needed. It allowed us to have more family time and conversations to help build an everlasting bond. I took the same approach with my family. Our goal was to let our kids know that they were loved, and they would always have a foundation of family to lean on at any time during their life. The concept of family is gone in this America. This American Dream has destroyed and continues to destroy families. It’s not worth it. We must change our behaviors and actions to put us in a position to be happy. No one else is going to do it for us. Thank you so much for this comment. I really have so many thoughts on it.

@@kylemorgan3109 I respect your opinion but it’s his truth just like your truth is your truth.
We all have different experiences in life which lead to different perspectives.
The reality is the American dream is a dream for some and a nightmare for others.
The 9-5 is typically the nightmare because it often requires you to work to build somebody else’s dream while neglecting your own because you gotta pay the bills right?
Yes I’m about 30+ years older than you, however, I believe that investing and business ownership is the way to the quote unquote American dream if that’s one’s goal.
It sounds like you are making a lot of sacrifices to build your own enterprise and while that’s commendable I hope that you don’t forgo living and enjoying your life while you can. You’re 21. 22 isn’t promised or 23,24,25. I pray God bless you with many more years but my point is so many people “live only to work” til 65 or longer only to retire but that’s not a guarantee.
I’m a fan of FIRE (financially independent retire early) so if that’s your goal I say go for it!
I tell young people IF you get it while you’re young (such as yourself) meaning the financial literacy piece, then you’re well on your way.
      Spend less than you earn
      Budget
      Save
      Invest
Build on a skill (business, talent or passion)
      Rinse and repeat!
I’m very familiar with the dawn of the internet and social media as a means of opportunity.
It offers the promise of a more “fair and level playing field”
By the way I look like you.
      Best wishes to you 😊

I achieved the American dream. All your points are valid - corporate America is at war with the workforce and the government is not structured to help provide a better life for Americans. Unlike Canada or European countries. Here it's every man for himself, dog-eat-dog - that's how this country started from inception with the idea being to make wealth. If you can make wealth you can rise above others and segregate your self away from those who don't. But most everyone today starts in a hole - it wasn't that way when I started out in the early 80s. The people have to be smarter in who they elect to government offices and transition to a Socialist Democracy (which is a long way off if ever). Instead of funding massive military budgets that money could go towards universal health care, maternity/paternity leave, etc - and lead to a much happier population. And in most countries the minimum wage is adjusted OFTEN and discussed OFTEN. Here, the Repub politicians couldn't care less. And so a huge percentage of Americans are stressed everyday and struggle everyday, and it's intended to be that way. Start electing better people to government positions.

For me, when I started my small business, there wasn’t a lot of state and local regulations that made it to impossible to do. But now, we are seeing more and more regulations that make it expense and time consuming. Therefore, making it harder for people (especially those with limited funds) to be able to open a business. There always seems to be some sort of obstacle or hurdle to jump just to make it in this system. This should not be the case if it is designed for everyone to have the opportunity to succeed. Hopefully things will turn in the right direction.

As a 21 year old African American kid who grew up in Brooklyn NY I can say with 100% certainty that the narrative you present is simply not true. In the slightest. The American dream is alive and well. Within the span of a year and a half I went from being homeless to
Owning a moving business. I’ve had to work harder than most people could ever comprehend. Day in and day out all I think about is my business. I don’t party I no longer have any friends all I do is work. With those sacrifices I’ve been able to buy my own box truck and a sprinter van as well as afford as $1850 in rent for a 1bdr apt. Far easier than any other point in history. The American dream will never be achieved through 9 to 5. That for most people is middle class at Best and poverty for the rest. If you don’t have a talent or aren’t super athletic The only way you will achieve the American dream is by starting a business. There are plenty of businesses with relatively low barrier for entry & little overhead needed. Mostly blue-collar work like moving or lawn care plumbing etc the list goes on. African Americans should be dominating these industries And it’s my goal to continue to get people who look like me to start these types of businesses. Moral of the story you bust your ass and the American dream will surely find its way to you.

Thanks for your response. I am glad to hear different opinions on this subject. In his 1967 interview, Dr. Martin King speaks on the reason why black Americans face more obstacles because they were the only people ever to be slaves here on American soil. He tells that after being enslaved for years, blacks were not given anything to start and economic base, yet the Europeans were given land and possessions to help them get started. The playing field was not level then and it is not level now. Therefore, it was and is as Malcolm stated, “a nightmare” for many people of color. Can you share a little on how we have control?

    • @SuperFoodParents
      @SuperFoodParents 2 года назад +2

@@miltoncraft901 Its true, there are obstacles and this is a situation where 2 things can be true at the same time. Within a nightmare you can wake up. For Black people who received their doctorates and assembled and formed HBCU's and created legacy during trans-Atlantic chattel slavery, survived and thrived in wars while enslaved, navigated the plight of sharecropping, set their foundations during Jim Crow, or grew businesses throughout the drug and gun infusions and even to today's continued perils therein lies the control to rise and excel and enjoy the life you have.

Hello. I like your video. Growing up as a kid all I saw were people trying to do the right things. If they had something new it was, because they could afford it. I learned a lot from others, but what I learned was a valueable lesson. I learned not to live like anyone else. I'm just one person, and adding more problems into my life was not what I wanted. I learned to not want things at all. I live how I want, and not like other people live. It's a good thing to know yourself. My mother asked me before she passed away when was I having a family of my own. I told her mami that is a very difficult life to live. In my mind I thought it's difficult for me to take care of myself, and having to take care of others is even harder. She forgot that I helped her raise 4 little kids while raising myself. So I learned about that dream at the age of 5. Thank you for your video.

Best advice I ever got is to live satisfied and happily UNDER your means and pay with cash because getting into debt will turn a dream into a nightmare. Isn't it odd that to get a mortgage they want you to have no debt..think about that, how can that be maintained going forward?..and what typically happens later on is more DEBT..
The economic outlook is not like it was 30-40 years ago so 2 income families should resist getting their house on both salaries instead save one person's salaries for the fun stuff like raising a family, vacations and unexpected expenses.

    • @miltoncraft901
      @miltoncraft901  2 года назад

The goal is to always live within your means and stay away from debt. I was always taught in a married household to live off of one income and save the other. However, I do believe that due to their work status, a number of people are unable to meet their basic needs which causes them to make choices that lead them down the road of debt. This should not be the case. If someone works a full time job, they should be able to at least meet their basic needs. I agree with you, pay cash as much as possible to avoid falling into the trap of debt. Thanks for your comment.

It’s not because you are not prepared, motivated, qualified, skilled, or educated, it’s because of who and where you are. This American Dream is not for everyone. Structural racism is real in this America. It continues to isolate people of color from access to opportunities and upward mobility which is part of the dream. It is more difficult for people of color to accel in education and jobs. This country is filled with racial and ethnic inequities. As a young man, I had all of those things that were prerequisites to having the American Dream. The skills, the education, and the plan. We can all have a plan but it we are honest, the path to success is not the same for everyone. It is not a leveled playing field. I know a number of people who have had plans only to see them sided lined by this great American system. I understand your point and realize that there is a small percent of people who will have the dream but speaking from experience, having a plan is not the answer in this American Dream. So it’s hard for me to hear anybody cry oh boo-hoo for the general populous because the last time I checked the general populace got their 40 acres and a mule and have benefited off of the compound interest of it over generations and that’s just to a piece of the many parts of this pie that we don’t get to enjoy. Even if the general populace is in debt to achieve the American dream at least they are given the opportunity to even be in debt to enjoy any type of dream we all know that African-Americans are the least approved for every single loan possible whether it be home loan or business loan. Last time I checked the general populace was doing fine everywhere I look I see general populace with businesses in front of me on the side of me and in the back of me all I see is businesses that don’t have our face on it. There are still a number of systemic obstacles that blacks face when it comes to getting good jobs. African Americans have always been more vulnerable in the labor market. You are correct, we have to take care of our own families and the so called American Dream is not for everyone. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. 👍🏽

@@miltoncraft901 I would say my uncle who didnt speak english who came here at 12yrs old made the most of public school, learned english as fast as he could and went to UC schools on scholarship. He became a teacher for a special education school - went back to school for his masters and then PhD in education. He became a high school principle and retired from education after spending a lifetime teaching American children.
Every opportunity provided to him is available to anyone willing to put the work in.
I have found many of the people who are born in the US take their good fortune for granted and piss away the opportunities available to them.
The US military takes in bright low income kids - trains them and pays for any college courses they want to take. Basically free education in exchange for service.
As a first gen American I spent 10 years in the military because I love America and the opportunities its provided my family. I have several degrees and certifications provided for by the government. It was an honor to serve and taught me alot about mindset.
You either get busy living or get busy dying.
You have to motivate yourself to achieve greatness. Give everything your all or just skip it. Half hearted effort is lazy and a waste of time and resources.
The kids I went to school with had the same teachers as I did - the difference is afterschool I taught myself. Electronics, engineering, applied sciences. I read magazines about the subjects that intetested me. I expanded my personal knowledge. My parents are both high school drop outs who worked multiple jobs to raise me. My fathers english wasnt great as a teen but improved over time.
Their work ethic combined with my drive for a better life pushed me to do better.
I am not special. My parents were not able to help me in my studies. They did show me there is no quit and you must work for that which you truly want.
Now im on track to make over 200k this year - not a ton of money but better than most. My daughter is in college and I support her goals.
With each generation success can be easier as the pathway is known.
Its not overnight or easy but you have to want it.
My uncle raised his son to partake in the family medical translation business - they have grown it into quite a large small business. Not easy.
Again - my family has zero knowledge of American life - finance - banking or government work but found their way.

The playing field is not leveled and everyone does not have the same access and opportunities. As for me, I have several successful businesses. I didn't make any excuses.
