What is your opinion on ACC (even other game) setups? Did you ever try proper good setup done by some esport driver or you make setups yourself?
Do you think you could improve by driving better setup?

HoLiFuk! The changes in the game made me give up on setups, 'cause i can't make them myself, so i was buying them, or getting them from you. At one point i just gave up and said, that custom setups are wasted on me and went back to default setups. I thought that if i can be about 3.5s off the pace, i'm satisfied. But seeing how much of a difference it is... I mean... OMG! No no, OMFG!

Ive seen a "pro setup", but it looks more like they take advantages of different things in the physics engine, than based on real driving. So a caster maxed out for example, stiffest springs, stiffest rollbars, driving the car on the bumpstops. This car would not be fast in real life. Same thing in older sims ive driven, (where the fastest guys also drove with joysticks to be able to drive the car in a way you would never do in real life). So the better the physics engine gets, the worse these setups will be luckily.

@@AndrewTSqFunny how to you that and it did happen. Over the 1 of patches for console I've noticed braking being way different and more like real life and curbs punishing people that want to cut. Fully engaging ABS and trailing off works but I found for races longer than 15 min it can real f@#k up your tires (tyres). I threshold brake most of the time now unless there is a crash or brakes are cold. From what I here most console players use aggressive setups anyways whether or not they tune them some more I'm not quite sure. I just use aggressive and leave it alone. I love battling the understeer and oversteer because it can make you a faster DRIVER not just the car.

I'd still argue that in most cases it's a driver problem, not a setup problem. But the default setups deserve an overhaul for sure. They all seem to suffer from on throttle understeer, some break out under throttle release or braking (yes I'm talking about hte Porker).
It's not ideal for new drivers because it can reinforce bad habits. More neutral and predictable setups would be great.

Well done, Jardier. This one will come up in a few conversations I'm sure. :)
The highest rated driver in iRacing said that what he didn't like about ACC is that "2 clicks on a damper and it's a different car". And unlike your average sim racer, real life drivers have engineers doing this stuff for them. Factor in all the 'electrickery' between the driver and tyres, the (arguably) exaggerated pressure and temp effects, and you can see how ACC can be a frustrating sim for many.

This video is a great demonstration of the gap between a good and an average setup. Drivers in the real world have a team of engineers and strategists behind them that can help them to achieve the best setup for their driving style and the best strategy for a race. Your general run of the mill Sim Racers have to "know it all" and do it on the fly. When you want to make it big in the E-Sports world, you need a good team (or close community) of Sim Racers that are willing to work together to make the whole team performing at a higher level.

Hey Jardier and friends. I don't know if people understand how frustrating it can be to just get into sim racing and serious enough to get a full rig... work hard to learn and become better, and not have any proper references or friends to help and learn to develop setups like this. I'd probably say that it's way harder than actually learning to drive. I know you can't share your competition setup, but can you tell us how different it is (1 to 10 or something) than the default aggressive in some aspects like aero and suspension, etc? When learning about setups, you always hear to test small changes and one at a time so I get worried about pushing things to the extreme. Hard to understand when its a setup change or when its my driving that is improving/declining.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience.
My first comment would be that I am totally unable to drive the car around the track like you, especially at kyalami.
The use you are making of the all track available is just insane, and explains already why you are fast.
Regarding the setup, I agree 100% that a appropriate setup for the driver makes the driving experience a lot more enjoyable, and for sure improves a lot the global pace.
But these "esports" setup applies to only 1% of the already most gifted pilots.
For average pilots like me, it is just impossible to manage , a little like Grand prix legends in 30/85 differential a long time ago
These setups make an optimized use of the game physics , and are not for everyone (especially for those not having hundreds and hundreds of hours of training and races).
Of course I can not qualify good an LFM with about the agressive setup , and I have to start at the back, but it remains that at the end I stayed on the track and can to finish around the 12th position. Some very quick guys are out after two laps. What's the point ?
Important is to have fun, make some observation and with the time try to become a better driver.
The place at the end doesn't really care, because even if some people told you it is a simulation, the true story is that it is just a GAME with nothing to win (except for a very few people).
Another important thing is not to pay to much attention at what are the laptimes of the other pilot, especially at LFM for example.
Or it may be very frustrating
Qualifiying at imola in 1:40 is not an normal laptime for a rookie, even on split 1.
There is about 65000 users, and there always be pilots quicker than us average pilots.
I am already very satisfied when i can brake my personal laptime, stay in the same lap as the winner, and so on. ....Important is the fun we can retire from a hobby. Or it would be better to switch to something else !

Great video, I would love to see more cars tested as it can be seen that each setup was bad in different way! EDIT: My bet is on Bentley not having great aggressive setup, as it doesn't feel the same way to me, as you described in your top 5 rookie cars video.
There I can see that setup can make or break the feel of the car. I remember when I bought ACC and obviously started on safe setups, which are made understeery on purpose. After transitioning from AC, I was surprised how much I didn't like the game, but after a while I realized it was precisely because of those setups, even just transitioning from safe to aggressive setups made the game so much more enjoyable to me as cars suddenly became much more fun to drive.
Now I am intrigued how much more would I enjoy the game with a proper setup! As I didn't like the Honda precisely because of reasons mentioned in the video.
I really think that Kunos should pay more attention to how setups are made, as it can make or break the feel of the game for new players, who based on their initial impressions could just stop playing or stay and potentially race online or buy some DLCs.

Adjust the right height to get more weight towards the front to get a decent setup without paying money. Next adjust BB, TC and ABS to get a setup you can use in LFM top splits to get into top 5 to 10 territory. The aggressive setups tend to have major issues on corner exit. No rotation.

I've spent my entire sim racing experience playing ACC. Starting on console and moving to PC.
I've never liked the idea of using Exploits regardless of what type of game it is.. From sim racing to other sports games.. For me it doesn't prove who is the best. It proves who's learned how to exploit the game the best.
This week, and I understand this video is old, LFM is using the Hungaroring for it's 25 min rookie sprint.... I'm using the McLaren Evo.
I found a hot lap video with set up posted on RUclips! The set up was ridiculous. Max caster, max min toe, max damping (bottom 3 sliders) , max front RB, minimum springs and 500/400 wheel rates and the bump stop in the rear down 4 clicks and from up like 12 clicks. Max downforce!
My set up is basically a fined tuned aggressive set up.
My caster is stock, my toe is -1.2, 1.2 rear. My camber is the stock 4 and 3.5.
My mechanical grip settings are basically stock but with 1 or 2 clicks down on the spring rates both front and back. Then I take 3 or 4 off the rear bump and as a couple to the front.
Damping is basically -3-4 off the stock set ups all the way around.
    26, 27, 16, 27
    11, 17, 20, 28
My downforce is 10 rear and 0 front and my ride height is 70-52!
    I do use 4tc 4abs and 2 tc2.
My lap times were 1:43.5 and the hot lap time was 1:41.9. Around 1.6 seconds slower which is pretty normal for on most tracks with the exceptions of Paul Richard where I'm about 2.5 seconds slower and Spa where I'm in the 2:17 range.
I've attempted to try the eSports/Hot lap set ups but they just feel so weird and unrealistic after spending 3 years using base aggressive set ups with a few tweaks to make the car more stable..
Id like to see a league or championship that requires the settings to be with in a specific window eliminating the exploit set ups!
This would imo bring out the best drivers in Sim racing and eliminate the ones who rely on the exploits.. While I believe people like Baldwin, Whitehead and the other top elite drivers would still be at the top, at the same time I feel some of the others would fall off.
It would also make for better racing. It would bring the top 50% of the field closer and who knows. Some of the bigger names might fall off and new names come into the spotlight!!
You saying your 3 tenths from the fastest guys seems crazy to me. Are you really 3 tenths slower or is the set up 3 tenths slower? The only way to find out is have races where the exploits are eliminated. Which was the goal of 1.9 and it failed miserably

My take is that default setups are for new people to the game and they will not be hitting anywhere remotely close to these lap times anyways. I'm almost certain that anyone truly into sim racing would be dabbling with pro setups within a month if not sooner. I've been using gosetups and they have proven to be fantastic so far. Great video I found it very interesting

Thats what the safe setup should be for, for newcomers that want to get into the rhythm without losing the car. The aggressive setup should be more oversteery IMO, and I dont mean esports level of oversteery, but just a bit more to play with. You can reduce the rear wing on every setup by 2-5 clicks and its still stable

The thing is, those esports setups require the driver to have quite a bit of skill to get the most out of it (as proven by Aris in the Watkins 24 he did). Someone like me would most likely not find any time from those setups and/or would have a hard time not crashing.
Maybe you should repeat this test with both you and someone of average ability and a new driver, you know in the name of science...

One and a half second it's a massive disadvantage, even half a second would be too much and it's not just about the time you lose but also the driving difficulty that might lead you to make more mistakes, there is zero point in playing this game online unless you're using an esport setup.
I hope the developers realize having separate races with locked setups wouldn't hurt anyone, I might even buy some DLCs if they add online races with default setups.
I want to support the game but I don't have endless amount of time at my disposal to make my own setups, spending $40 on DLCs would make me feel much better compared to spending the same amount of money buying esport setups for the best car, and I can only do one or the other.

  • @MasterDeroy

I think no matter what, your driving will be compromised because you know what setup you're using. You would have to collect other racers and blind test the stock and esport setups.... somehow.
Only by collecting multiple laps of data on multiple tracks with multiple cars and multiple racers on different setups could you get the real answers. Also, driving style plays a big factor, too. Green light, go go go!

Pro/Esports level setups generally need to be purchased or shared with you from a experienced teammate. The majority of RUclips videos out there nowadays that are actually decent setups are samples of what you can get if you purchase the rest. There are a few channels out there that have usable setups. I use GO Setups, HYMO, & still have my CDA subscription. I like to test & compare setups against one another. I still make my own adjustments for qualifying & races, but having a solid base to start with is key. Setup changes can drastically affect how the car reacts & feels. So it's no surprise that Esports level setups using Motec or some other software are that much faster than the presets. They are really just basic setups to get your foot in the door. If your serious about being competitive then you'll either need to pay someone for the time they put into the setups they sell or you need to find someone experienced that's willing to build you your own. Unless you get really good with software like Motec, you'll most likely never be able to get the most out of creating your own. I don't mind investing in complete track packs for certain cars. In split 1 of almost any league, it will be the difference between running competitive or struggling in the back.

playing on gamepad the normal setups are awful for my car of choice and the free esport setups felt like honest trolling (maybe they are awesome with proper steering wheel but with the pad way too aggressive), I watched some guides and especially the one you provided on what to turn when the car turns a certain way has helped out tremendously. still feel like I can feel at least 30% more comfortable with setups but with practise I can probably get 2 seconds faster - so practise would give me 2 seconds and nailing a proper setup would give me 0.8s on top which would explain why I'm 3 seconds off the pace XD at least that's the copium I'm huffin here.
For F1 2019 and 23 I just found good setups and copied them, but here I feel like I have to do a lot by myself through practise and trial and error because the game unlike f1 isn't made for the controller but optimized for a nice wheel, so it always includes a couple hours of tweaking for me, one track at a time, one car only, so yeah, that's the charm though!

I rarely use the Ferrari or Honda as I feel like the aggressive set just gives me constant front rear changing balance. The video is interesting due to showing what is capable from a better set up. But, I do think that set up is partially an individual thing and what may work well for one person may not work for another. I can see why people charge for proven generic set ups though, its a painful process that can take a long time! I'd quite like to see a similar test at Spa. Great video as usual. 👍👍👍

I think the setup has to suit your driving ability, so a tricky Esports setup will not be good for a novice or bronze level driver. So maybe a detuned Esports setup for your silver standard driver.
I have put in so much time to develop my own setups, and been about a year doing them now. As of course every drives different so hard to find one setup to suit a team for instance. (Non esports level). I've made setups and then paid for setups to compare and I'm maybe one or two clicks different so tells me I'm on the right path for making the higher end setups. Still things I don't fully understand.

Yes, exactly a second per lap gain to be expected. And that makes me angry. I’m struggling, sweating, fighting my car, concentrating to a limit every corner when Very best setup will let you enjoy driving and achieve superb times laughing. Now I’m learning my own setups, just to reduce understeer and sliding out. I had an excellent example on Donnington track. My reasonably safe (from aggressive) setup for 2 hr drive was loosing a lot of time vs good setups, do calculations yourselves over whole race!…

Even if you have a perfect esports setup, the driver has to be able to get the best laptime out of it. But I think the car setup can make a bigger difference than the racing hardware actually.
