    I never knew you could tumble dry it. I got mine last year, and only since we got into summer here in Australia, have I stopped wearing it. I love my alpaca

    • @appgearco8674
      @appgearco8674  3 года назад +1

      Yep ! We designed our process to make the fabric so that it could be tumbled without significant shrinkage. Most every textile product will shrink a little - and if you washed and tumbled ours right out of the box, it would shrink a few % points - but WELL within normal standards. But, what you will find is that as you wear the hoodie, it will loosen and break-in, and that when you occasionally wash & tumble dry , it will go back to its original shape, but will not shrink past that noticeably. Thanks !

    Thats cool that I can use permetherine on Alpaca garments. I mix and use that stuff on my clothes anyway. I even made a RUclips video about it. Awesome, Thank You

    I'd like to know what the ingredients are that we need to avoid using in powdered detergents. I want to use low waste products, and prefer to use powder detergent because it means no shipping water around. I can use castille soap, instead, for now, but more info would be great. Thanks!

    • @appgearco8674
      @appgearco8674  3 года назад +3

      Great suggestion! And, its really hard to go into depth about the chemistry of detergents - so we decided to segregate it into the "Liquid" vs "powder" because its the most definitive way to do it. But your question is a great one - and here is the reason:
      GENERALLY, most powdered detergents have either Sodium Carbonate (or "Soda Ash"), Sodium Percarbonate ("oxygen cleaner" ), or other similar chemicals. Sodium Carbonate is often touted as environmentally friendly because its a natural substance that is mined. BUT these types of chemicals have a high PH. Short Chemistry lesson: Acids like vinegar have a low PH less than 7, "Bases" like Soda Ash have a high Ph over 7. A Ph of 7 is neutral. High Ph substances can break down the fiber structure of protein fibers like Wool, Alpaca, Angora, Silk, etc. When the protein structure breaks down, the fiber gets week and breaks. We're not saying that once wash with a high Ph powder would damage your Alpaca - but it could depending on how much powder you put in the wash. But for sure, repeated washes with high Ph chemicals will weaken your alpaca garments over time.
      So - high Ph powdered detergents with phosphates (also high Ph) were popular in the old days because High Ph is great for getting oily & greasy grime out of cotton. Phosphates were doing alot of the work, and were eventually outlawed in home detergents because they are environmentally probematic.
      On the other hand, generally, liquid detergents are based more on surfactants - and do not depend as much on Ph to get the job done.
      So - if you have ANY animal based fibers like Alpaca or Merino Wool - its always to wash with a detergent that is as close to Neutral as you can get - and most liquid detergents meet that goal. Also - liquid bleaches DO NOT COUNT in this statement - they are high Ph too, in general.
      GREAT question - thanks !!!

    I'm assuming tide pods are safe to use for the hoodies as well.

    • @appgearco8674

      Yes - tide pods are fine. Just stay away from powdered detergents - they are high Ph. Also stay away from all forms of bleach - very damaging. 🤙

    so 10 mins in dryer on low heat won't cause any shrinkage?

    • @thmkly
      @thmkly 3 года назад +1

      looks like they're air drying (no heat) in the video

    • @KarenWickert
      @KarenWickert 3 года назад +2

      Yeah, I'm not super clear - they say you can tumble dry on low, but looks like they aren't using any heat - my dryer doesn't have that option.

      Thanks !

      Karen, the dryer scene was more for effect rather than to show the actual setting. If your dryer doesn't have a low heat or permanent press setting - if it is just one heat setting - I would go ahead and lay it flat to dry. Most dryers have a "no heat" or "fluff" cycle - so if yours has that options - I would lay it flat to dry, and then once dried, you can put it in the fluff or No Heat cycle with some wool dryer balls to fluff it up. That will work fine. Thanks !!

    • @appgearco8674
      @appgearco8674  3 года назад

      TomK - don't pay much attention to the actual dryer setting in the video - that scene was for effect and not necessarily to show the actual setting. Please see the answer to Karen's question.... Thanks !

    What about tide pods?

    • @appgearco8674
      @appgearco8674  2 года назад

      Tide Pods are fine. You really want to stay away from the powdered detergents (even the "environmentally friendly" powders) because they are very high Ph (very alkaline) and harsh. You also want to stay away from all forms of bleach.
      Thanks !

    I have two certified 100% baby Alpaca hoddies. Drying Alpaca is the worst idea ever. I'm guessing your Alpaca products are a blend?

    • @appgearco8674
      @appgearco8674  Год назад

      Heck no. Other companies that advertise their products as "Alpaca" often use blends - and make it hard for you to discover that. Our Hoodie fabric is 100% Alpaca - we know because we make it. And yes, you can launder it and tumble dry it. We even recommend to tumble dry them occasionally. Obviously, Alpaca doesn't need to be washed much because its naturally resistant to retaining bacteria, but if you follow the laundering instructions, they will be fine !! 🤙
