Hey Grant! I'm starting as an AM as well in January! Just wanted to say that I really appreciate these videos. I had my interviews just around when you started making videos so the timing is perfect. Following your journey, hearing about your day, and hearing you enjoy it now has made me much less anxious for when I start!
That is great congratulations on the upcoming start date and thank you for the feedback - I love hearing that these videos have been helpful for you and others and reducing anxiety is always a god thing!
Grant helped me get ready for my interview and I'd HIGHLY recommend for you to work with him if you've got a interview coming up with Amazon or you'd just like to gain some additional interview experience. He's fantastic doing Mock Interviewing, answering your questions, and helping you to answer using the STAR method.
Just wanted to say thanks for the advice, my process was slightly different I received an email Thursday, interviewed today and accepted my offer as a L5 AM 🙌🏽
13.5 hours per a day? One extra hour for preparing for your day at the start, and 2.5 hours doing shift hand off at the end? I was under the assumption that it would be more 11-12 hours (30 minutes to an hour before and after shift). Thanks a bunch for making these. I'm glad you are liking it and you give me reassurance that I have made the right decision by accepting my offer.
Tyler J. My shift is RT, which means I work Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night. For the associates, this shift goes from 6:30PM-7:00AM. The extra hour comes from coming in one hour early to prepare for the shift. Other shifts are 10 hours typically but run over four days. I hope this helps clear it up!
Thanks for posting Grant! That’s a very long day but working 3 days out of 7 isn’t so bad. Wondering how long do you get for meal breaks (you mentioned you bring two meals). What about your team. Does everyone go to lunch at the same time, it seems it would be challenging if they didn’t. What about mid day breaks?. I know they are not union workers but most companies usually allow for mid day 15 minute just to refresh your mind. Appreciate the information you share. Really helpful to know what to expect if given an offer.
@@tamarhc Yeah 3 out of 7 is not bad especially since I can flip back to a regular day schedule during my days off. Right now they have staggered lunch and break times due to COVID. This is for mid day breaks but keep in mind this is for associates, not managers. Managers can take breaks as they see fit. My shift specifically has two 30 minute breaks and one 15 minute break.
Just had my interview 2 weeks ago and got the job last week as an AM! Still haven't gotten told where i'm being placed though yet. They said they will have a decision by January.
I just did my campus next interview 3 weeks ago now and its been 2 weeks since I got accepted I am still in the boat of waiting for my assignment as well I liked that they let me send them some areas that I would like to go so at least wherever I end up I will most likely enjoy living there.
Can you sit down at all there? How much communication is it between you and the operational manager? Also are you the only AM over your associates or do they have other AM’s as well ?
If you would like to sit down you can find places to take a seat and rest - it is definitely an active job physically. There is constant communication between Area Managers and the Operation Managers as they are the ones providing oversight on key time-sensitive functions. I have my own set of associates that are assigned to me but myself and another AM are over the same area in the facility but they have their own set of associates.
Thanks Grant, appreciate you sharing your experience. For anyone who got a similar job offer for Area Manager. Did anyone get a start date that is in the summer? I got a start date for July 5th 2021. I truly appreciate your videos Grant. I accepted my offer as an AM last week and I was recently placed in a Fort Worth FC starting in January. I'm looking forward to the new opportunity and change of scenery. I was hoping you could provide some examples of problems that often arise during your shift. What methods have you found to be most effective in troubleshooting these occurrences efficiently and effectively?
That is very exciting congratulations! The change of scenery will be a lot of fun - I have loved moving around and can relate to this. That is a good questions and I will cover that more in my next video. In short lots of the issues relate to staffing, belt jams, strategically placing associates based on skill, and various other things. I will have to think more on this!

Are you able to take a vacation within the first year of working or must it be after the first year Thanks in advance 🙂
Thank you for watching! To answer your questions: There are certain discounts you may get on Amazon products. Amazon's total compensation package sometimes includes the granting of RSUs - restricted stock units which are awarded to you as you accrue them over time. You can take vacation whenever you have the hours accrued, there is not a time frame on when you are allowed to take your first vacation.
Hi Grant, I got my offer letter from amazon today however the salary is REALLY low and they are saying it supposedly non-negotaible. Wanted to know if you had a similar experience and how you negotiated your salary?
I would suggest watching my video on negotiating salaries :) If you feel it is very low and you want to discuss that further with your recruiter then do what you think is best in your situation!
Awesome channel/videos, I've basically binged through all of your videos! Quick question, did you happen to have a Lean Six Sigma certification before you applied? Would you say it's valuable when applying for an Area Manager or Operations Manager position? Thanks for the valuable information...I am too in the progress of applying for this position. One doubt I had is for how many hours does an AM get paid for? Is it a standard 40 hours per week or does the AM get paid for more hours during the peak season?
So far I have not - however during peak season this is more up in the air. You will have a day in your shift code that is assigned to you where if you have to work overtime you will at least know the specific day that would happen on. I would imagine during peak AMs can be called in on other days outside of this as well. You kind just have to let it go during peak and go with it! But otherwise I have not had this experience. Very good questions and I do not have an answer for you on those. Mine is right outside the city but it would be difficult to get to without a car. In most cases you can probably use a local bus system but I don't know enough about the location of each FC
I know a few people on this shift - it is definitely more manageable having the days back to back on nights as opposed to a "donut" setup some people have where they work Monday through Friday but have Wednesday off
