After research into the AIWA TP-1011 preamp and completing the first build for my friend Mauro (who was the driving force behind all this), the first new song I wanted to record as a sound test was "The Shed". Even though there are other effects involved, I think that the unique character of the AIWA preamp can still be heard clearly as the base for the whole sound. Probably my favourite song from Rainbow.
For the build I was lucky to have access to the original transistors as well as detailed pics and schematics of the original unit. I could also compare it with other existing pedals (thanks Tony G!) that are based on the same circuit but sound different from Blackmore's unit to my ears. After many tests I decided on what circuit revisions sounded closer to the original and built the prototype I'm using on this video. Please let me know what you think on the Comments section!

Thanks to the great guys at Blue Cat's Audio I could get close to the original with their amazing plugin that's based on the legendary Schulte Compact Phasing A used by Blackmore. And it's free! Not the same as the real thing of course but quite close enough. I'll do another version in the future when/if I build one ;)

A big thanks also to Joe F. for the original "Blackmore" pick and for all the great info he shared with me.
Great playing. Sounds amazing. Probably the most underrated, Rainbow/Dio songs in their catalogs.
Thank you! 🎸🎸🎸

This is perfect! Even on my Samsung phone it sounds totally authentic. Well done. 🤟
Thanks so much man!
In the Straight Between the Eyes video live Blackmore use Scheckter 500T pickups and later on he change to Lace Sensor pickups. He never used Semore Duncan Quater Punder wich they use in his Artist Fender Blackmore...Thouse are as close as you can get but a bit darker than 500 T picks.
Is there a link to the schematic you used/ended up with after mods?
I was hoping I'd have a shot at the best Rainbow tone on youtube but you just had to enter the race :D Lol. Jokes aside sounds fantastic as always. I am glad you are getting into later 70s sounds!
Thanks Adam! :D
I was dragged into it to be honest. I'm glad though, it's a lot of fun learning the new material...Cheers, M.
Suggestion: you’ve got that carefully curated rig, but then you add the Compact Phasing as a digital plugin. Suggest you buy the J Haible Compact Phasing X, they are incredible!
Thanks! I build the phaser too, check out this video:

Hey Bud !!! Vince from France ! Great job again it sounds awesome... So happy with my booster... Guys around don't hesitate to order Max boosters it's really serious work😁😎
Glad to hear that Vince! Thanks a lot! :)
Nice job 👏
Sounds great! I love how much midrange Ritchie had in his tone. Does the pedal add a lot of mids? Did Ritchie use the Aiwa in the Perfect Strangers era?
Thanks! Yes, the pedal adds that midrange so specific to his MKIII/Rainbow sound. Ritchie used the TP-1011 during the Purple reunion years too. There are pics of the studio sessions with his amps and cabs and you can also see the AIWA. Cheers, M.
Thanks! Finally placed an order for one!!
Man that was excellent! Are you sure you're not really Blackmore? : ) Details on the Aiwa Preamp lucking in the background please. I'm intrigued.
Hahah, thanks Robert! I got asked by a great guitar player of a tribute band in Italy to build him a pedal after the Aiwa TP1011 preamp. He didn't like any of the alternatives and after trying some myself I agreed that the original circuit had to be revised to sound like Blackmore's unit. It has a Mic Level knob and an Output Level like the original plus a Tone and Filter controls that I added for versatility. If you have a Major you won't need to touch those but they will come handy in case of using a different type of amp. It operates at the correct specified internal voltages from a regular 9V adaptor. I have the original transistors (impossible to find anymore) and was able to find suitable modern replacements with the same electrical characteristics of the old ones. Let me know if you have any questions! I'll be building them to order, still undecided on the price but it will be reasonable. Just let me know, cheers, M.
Again, GREAT playing and sound! Love it!
You now have 2 Marshall Majors behind you? Is there a difference or are they duplicates?
Thanks Wlat! One the Majors is from 1970, the other one is a build I'm working on. Same modified circuit but only 100W of power ;)
Cheers, M.
Hey Max, sent you an email :-)
Where can this TP-1011 pedal be bought??
Hi, send me an email to mgalbusera285 at gmail and I’ll build you one. I have it listed on Reverb.com too but they will charge you sales tax and charge me high fees. As you prefer. Cheers, Max

Ok thanks!
Let me think about it. Just stumble on this today the first time.
Send you an email if I want one 🙂
Great video. Now we need a video of ritchie's strat with the humbuckers he played. Which are john birch hyperflux same as tony iommi's. And dimarzio dlx plus humbuckers. Rb mainly used them during 74 during the encore when purple played "going down".
Thanks so much! First time I read such detailed info on Ritchie's humbuckers, cheers. M.
@@mgalbu there's photos from manchester 74 and some backstage photos 1974 on Getty image. John birth had a signature rb guitar it was reverse strat body with humbuckers. John done a reissue in 2005. I went down the rabbit hole looking for clues. Listening to bootlegs. Sent emails. Cheers. 👍👍
@@hopespotbrand.1725 Great info! Those are great builds by John Birch...excellent stuff
Wow!! Awesome! Great work Max, it sounds fantastic.
Thanks so much J.!! 🎸🎸🎸
Where do you get those thick trem arms?
I used to make them myself. I made a video about it, it’s relatively easy. Cheers, M.
👏 amazing 👏. I'm amazed you were able to come anywhere near that intro solo. Such a great performance of a great lesser known classic.
Thank you so much! 😊🎸🎸🎸
Absolutely love this. Ritchie Blackmore style is ear candy. My #1 guitarist!
That was awesome 👏 👏👏 very well done
Thanks so much, Jim! ;)
Max sei una Ferrari mescolata con una Lamborghini...non ho parole!!:)))
truly fantastic Max!
Thanks Eric! :)
Excellent as always. Nailed it.
Thanks a lot Joseph!
Really close. Only thing missing is a bit more volume, to get the classic volume sustain. But obviously your rig would do that perfectly. You’ve nailed the tone, you’ve nailed the style. Hope you’re getting the opportunity to utilize it with a great band.
Thank you so much! :)
Brilliant and unusual choice!!!Have you done Babylon yet?
Self portrait might be an unusual one too!?
Thank you! I'll look into those too! Don't know how to play them yet. :)
Too Weird! Last nite I played this intro as it's one of my fave rainbow moments, esp the Am bit in the intro. You always nail it. Are you going to be selling your 1011 on Reverb like your H-S TB?? PLEASE DO! While I love BSM and Bernd's stuff, but the price tag for a normal working dood is a bit much for the BSM RPA or even the RB1011 from GtrSlinger. I do follow your 'verb shop so if you post up I should see it in my feed...but it's reverb so ya know...'should'...👍🤘
Thanks so much! :) Yes, I will be putting them up for sale on Reverb, have to decide on a fair price yet but I hear you ;). I'd rather deal directly here as their fees are quite steep though...
@@mgalbu copy, will comm thru reverb msgs once u list then "go private mode" 👍
Great job! Is this pre amp pedal for sale? Thank you!
Yes, it is, I build them to order. $225+shipping. I have not set up a Reverb listing yet but you can contact me directly at mgalbusera285 ( at ) gmail com. Thank you!

Absolutely excellent, fellow RB freak!
Thanks so much, Graeme!! Much appreciated.
One of greatest intros in rock history! And you nailed it 👍
Thank you so much, Robert!
Sounds Great my friend !! - Dave..
Thanks Dave!
What is wrong with frets after 12th for top strings?
It looks weird on the video but it's just the scalloping of the neck. Cheers, M.
can we use batteries with this one?
At the monent it works with a 9V AC adaptor only but I could add a battery clip on request. Internally the pedal operates at the higher voltages of the original circuit so I’m guessing battery life to be shorter than normal. Cheers, M.
Он такой маленький 🥺😀
Superb !!!!
I appreciate it! 🎸🎸🎸
How do I contact you? Interested in one
Great work btw!
@@heryadijaffar9507 Thank you! ;)
This sounds very good. You actually nailed his LLRR album sound! I always wanted to get close to his Live Between the Eyes sound. Maybe you could help me :D
Especially the Blues Improvisation has so many lovely tone nuances. It's very clear with a rolled back volume and really fat with the guitar volume turned up which is probably done by the Aiwa preamp. Do you think I could get close with your pedal and a "marshally" voiced amp and the right speaker? Which speakers do you think were used in the San Antonio show from 1982? My guess is he must have used different speakers because it sounds so different from the album sounds. I think it's more than just different amp settings or amp mods. Even the album sound itself is totally different from Difficult to Cure which is only one year older.
ruclips.net/video/pIulbiss6Rs/видео.html
That's the link to the Blues Improvisation
Thanks Timon, very glad you liked it! I have to confess that I'm not a fan of RB's post-Dio period but I will check that link and hear if I can be of any help with the sound you're after. :)
Cheers, M.
@@timons7446 OK, I just checked the link. To my ears it's his classic modded Major/AIWA TP-1011 combo but this time his Strat has what looks to me like Seymour Duncan pickups. I know he experimented a lot with different pickups but I'm not sure if he did the same with different speakers. I mean, if he could have access to G12H Greenbacks, why use anything else? Surely someone with better knowledge of this period might know better ;)
@@mgalbu Hahaha that's fine, many people don't like this era very much. I really appreciate that you took your time anyway and gave me some tips! Personally, my favourite live tones are from the Kopenhagen show with Deep Purple in 1972 and with Rainbow in San Antonio in 1982. Funnily enough, I find some similarities between these two sounds (apart from the amount of gain).
So you think he probably used the same speakers as always?
Concerning the pickups you're almost right ;). In this show he used the Schecter F500T's but the Seymour Duncans are copies of them. To my ears it sounds like he used the tapped output at this time because there are no major gain differences between the neck and bridge position. I have the SD version of the Schecters in my Strat and I tried the full output. The full output doesn't clean up that well so I returned to the tapped output.
@@mgalbu What I also really like about Ritchies Aiwa TP-1011 is the echo effect. Like a ducking delay (which is often used in studio productions) it doesn't interfere with his playing and acts more like a reverb but as soon as he stops playing it "pops up". Could you do a video about this, please?
If I use my BSM RPA into a delay in front of my amp, the echo repeats distort in a very unpleasant way. Somehow, this was never the case with Ritchie although he used his echo in front of his amp, too. You can already hear this effect in the California Jam show in 1974. I think it would be very much appreciated by many of your viewers if you did a video or more in which you experimented with a similar setup because you have the essential tools that most of us don't have. I've been following your channel for a couple of years now and you always succeed to emulate certain sounds of Ritchie which is amazing! The next step would be the echo effect ;)
Excelent!! Tab please :)
I'd wish I knew how lol. I might do a "slow motion" tutorial though, that's easier for me. Cheers, M.
@@mgalbu That will be awesome. Great sound and playing by the way. Ritchie is my all time heroe. He is the reason why I pick a guitar. Thanks for sharing it. Greetings from Argentina!
Very nice - you always nail the Blackmore sound. Curious what type of phaser effect you use here.
It's a free plugin based on the Compact Phasing unit that Blackmore used back then. Link is on the description. The phaser is no longer available so I'm planning on building one and see how it comes out, then maybe I'll make some more. Thanks! M.
