Not enough credit is given to gothic ecosystem especially in gothic 2 where AI got tweaked a bit and the concept was developed so much, you can become a gothic biologist. Everyone noticed common interactions like wolfs stalking their prey, or skeletons attacking anything they see, but the intricacy of mobs behavior goes far beyond that, to the point where some interactions are never seen in a playthrough. And they are not random either, based on them you can access what kind of creature you're dealing with, which makes the world feel trully alive. Generally, undead are always agressive toward the living but not the other way around, animals have a complex predator/pray/scavenger behavior, almost noone dares to attack demonic creatures, golems are true neutral who's only target is humans. Pray behavior - run away when attacked Predator behavior - stalking instead of chasing Here are some in depth notes of interest: *Lurkers* appear to crave exclusively humanoid flesh, and their behavior depends on the size of their target. They confidently prey on goblins, attack humans only to defend their territories, and do not fight orcs and lizard men but will eat their corpses. Very fascinating. *Wolfs* are your standart predator attacking critters like sheep, rats, molerats and scavengers. *snappers* are not afraid of humans and will pray on them as well. They also do not mind huning goblins. Their diet is very versatile, and it's a good time to mention that both snappers and lurkers can breathe underwater just in case you'd like to transform into one. But here is a curious one: snappers hate zombies. They do not pray on them but they will attack a zombie if it gets close. I assume this is similar to crows thinking scarecrow resembles humans and being cautious. *shadowbeast* is the apex predator of gothic. They will stalk all the previously mentioned pray, but they do not mind praying even on lizard men and orcs. *orcs* and *lizard men* appear to have identical AI and behavior since the ladder was clearly designed off of orcs, but the devs went out of their way to make 1 small change. Unlike orcs, lizard men do not attack shadowbeast on sight. This small change is meant to showcase that lizard man are not familiar with how dangerous the beast is. *skeleton goblins* have a strange respect(?) For orcs and will not attack them. *zombies* actually eat humans and orcs but unfortunately don't have the animation. Altho when I was a kid I always thought that their obsession with staring at corpses was extremely creepy. As if they are waiting for new friends to join their ranks. *field raiders* are docile, but they will eat bloodfly corpses. They also lack animation. *giant rats* seem to be the only species that consumes their own kin. Gross. *harpies* got their own guild in gothic 2 and unlike in gothic 1 they are animals and not demons now (undead kill them). They attack sheep of all things, which represents their sadism. *minecrawlers* are THE most agressive species, despite being animals. Just like ants, they seem to fight off of instinct and smell, and will attack anything that moves. Undead, demons, dragons - anything. Except golems (they cannot detect them?) And meat bugs (too tiny?) *warans* are docile picky eaters and will only scavenge scavenger corpses.
@@OfficialBizkit The countries where Gothic is most popular are Germany, Poland and Russia. In Poland, almost every gamer, at least RPG player, will know Gothic or has played it. It has an awesome Polish language version that is on par with the German original (in my opinion, having played it in both versions).
@@Domi_Wl It has a large following in the UK also. The only official languages covered by Piranha Bytes were German and English, and while the US market was intended it never got much further than the UK, but we did pick it up there. I got my copy in 2002 when it got the UK release, no fanfare or marketing, I stumbled upon it in the shops but it has enough of a retail release that word got out. Gothic 2, 3 & 4, Risen 1, 2 and 3 all got a retail pass due to Gothic and sold well in the UK to loyal customers such as myself, though the lacklustre quality at release of many of these titles hurt them. I bought them anyway Elex was the first Piranha Bytes game to get major attention in the US, as most RPG gamers over there had heard of Gothic by then, mostly as an answer to 'what do I play after running out of mods fro Skyrim? However Elex was also flawed, its a great game masquerading as a poor one and most reviewers didnt bother spending enough time on it to find out what the game was all about before giving it bad reviews.
If game is playable 15 years after release that means it's great game. If 15y old game is more enyoable then 50% of new releases that means it's masterpiece.
@@amsi6980 I haven't played it in a few years. Why would you say it is unplayable? I think I only installed a user made mod with a few bugfixes but other than that I played it exactly like it was back in the day.
@@amsi6980 Completed the game a dozen of times back in 2006. No mods whatsoever just plain old Gothic. Yes I died countless times, Had to save a lot and when I forgot to save for half an hour or more was extremely punishing. But it was also a really extremely rewarding feeling once you acomplished something in it
@@amsi6980 it all depends on your OS and such, my game only experienced one common bug - tried to load non existent textures that crashes my game. It took me a mere 5 minutes to find and download a FREE mod to fix it easily. Dont complain about a non-existent problem. Some mods are even an all-in-one bug fixes...its not hard finding mods specific for the problems you are experiencing, ESPECIALLY now since the game has been up for so long. edit: the game is playable, but not on modern computers, unless you spend a mere 5 to 10 mins downloading bug fix mods. Unless you been downloading individual mods and not mod packs, then im not surprised you find it a problem.
@Regeneration 19 i know everything about gothic 1 and 2, spent hundred of hours in them, I think i know how hard the games are but on the other hand once you know everything , it's not as hard anymore. Enjoyable none the less
@@yobro6053 it's not as good as g1&2, but it's a very good game IMO if you are a fan of the series. also the soundtrack is incredible. Stay away from "forsaken gods" and gothic 4 though, they are broken and rushed together games, they're not even made by piranha bytes
Yeah I also had to google it, but after learning controls I gotta say... I will never touch Skyrim again, I always wanted to play Gothic at least once and now I'm finally doing it, and playing it in 2021 with no nostalgia whatsoever I can say, it is a timeless masterpiece.
@@zsrlmsb2470 I always thought Skyrim was good, but incredibly overrated. It downgraded the already downgraded rpg mechanics of Oblivion and made a less varied map. It barely worked at lauch and still is full of problems. And there is very little actual choise in how you finnish the game
Definitely not. From the engineering point of view the game was not good. Lot's of bugs (for me it felt like ages before there was a bug free version) and awful loading times. What makes Gothic and especially Gothic 2 with it's addon one of the best games I ever played are the points that Merlin analysed quiet good in this video. Btw. CD Project developers once said that gothic was the game that inspired them the most for witcher 3
I'm playing this game since I was 4. It's so beautifull. Perfect story and one of the best gameplay ever! It's so sad that jowood destroyed gothic 3 and made their DLC and game. Pirania is in my heart!
i really miss the old gothic series ... the atmosphere, the dialogues, the music the alternative ways to play it ... so sad modern games have good graphics but really miss whats important.
That's what I was trying to tell some of my friends. What is the most important part of a game. Is it the grafic or the possibilities to travel or how to spend your skill points? Maybe that is the 2nd part. But the soul is how the atmosphere, NPCs, locations and sounds are presented to you. How the music and dialogues are written. Every named NPCs is unique and every location is telling a story. Every game is nothing without anything what is in gothic to find what makes it worthy to play. The soul of a game !
IT IS THE BEST GAME EVER MADE You know what sets it apart? Attention to detail and the way it was made, as reading a book but actually living it. No game gets near this level. I love fallout but it's not even close. Oh and fuck bethesda
I started with Gothic 2, which i think is the best in the series and man that was such a strong game. Still sucks me in more than each other game. The atmosphere is so intense
A.G. Never played it but i don't regret it for me it is not SO great lolz all of the comms are like "gothic is the best no games like that are made these days" you were in the box with computer and a gothic to play in my eyes
It feels like technology got worst or something. I don't understand how this game has so many features that they can't add in today's games. It's ridiculous.
well it's weird to me that you say this because i really enjoyed the gothic series, dungeon siege, torchlight, diablo and fable: the lost chapters and i still enjoyed fallout 4 and skyrim very much just taking each game for what it is and trying to make the best of it
I grew up with games like Gothic 1 + 2 and Morrowind and i love them even today. But I disagree with you, for me Skyrim is also a very good RPG, sure you can just rush through the main story and call it a disappointment, but there is alot more to it. In my first playthrough i had like 100 hours of gameplay without even doing 1/10 of the main story. Saying that game is not an RPG is simply not fair.
@@TechSupportDave 2019, probably my 50th playthrough, still those crazy chills. This game brought me to gaming and RPG esp. Used to be my number one game (before MassEffect2 and Kingdom Come: Deliverance came).
It's sad that the game isn't that popular. In poland for example it's a game from our childhood and everyone knows it. even today poles are making funny fan made songs from the dialogues from the game.
When I see only a small scene of the game, I am back in a better time XD... loved it, lived it. Damn. The music alone brings back good memories. I installed the mod for skyrim where they completely remade the mineland.... and you could take a look on gothic one and two reloaded :)
It's mainly Poland, Russia, Germany and the rest of eastern Europe because they have the best voice acting and because the players there seem to know a great game when they see it, which is why I'm not surprised that the amazing Witcher series was done by Poles rather than Brits or Americans. Bethesda for instance only talk about enthusiasm when it really is all about making money. CD Project does it with passion and true love for great games.
2 more importent aspects: 1. The standart graphics dont look very good compared to new games but they describe the athmosphere perfectly. 2. By learning how to use melee weapons, the animations change and become more handy. Every attack must be timed, which becomes easier if you improve your weapon skills. PLAY THIS GAME!!!
I completely agree (at least with this part in english, bc I don't know german very well yet :P ). I can't imagine Gothic with more realistic graphic and I think this is good, because it will never get old, it's just hallmarks. I also like whole combat system in this game.
Gothic was my first action RPG and it ruined this genre for me. Pacing, meaningful choices, replayability, map design, player's place in virtual society... God, I dream I'll be able to play game like this ever again.
Gothic I and Gothic II (+ addon) are the best. Ever. I sometimes think it is the nostalgia speaking but everytime you play these games you simply realize that no other rpg combined all the mechanics to create such a lively world and great character system.
that is true, it is one of the VERY few games i replay every once in a while that i try different approaches and still get amused. although i gotta admit getting used to the game takes 10 hours (every single time) at best :D
@Jorge LOL so true. That's one of eternal points that i loved this game. In the current RPGs you are fed by help and support. In Gothic, nobody helps. You can just open free walk around and be killed by first creature, haha.
I think that Gothic was somewhat important in making of Witcher franchise. In Poland Gothic is a big deal for gamers. Every gamer that I know personaly played Gothic and CD-Projekt was publisher of Gothic in Poland so it's clear that Gothic had some influance on their games.
Have you heard of polish fan-made expansion for Gothic? It's called "Dzieje Khorinis" which translates to "History of Khorinis" an will be fully voice-acted. Sadly it probably won't be translated to english or any other language. It's still quite impressive tho.
@tREX13470: There's nothing to think, Gothic was probably the biggest influence on the Witcher after the source material: ruclips.net/video/s2-sDeavkqU/видео.html
@@user-xx6fv4tu2q Here's the homepage, it's not out yet. historyofkhorinis.org/ The FAQ says that they will have a Polish, English, German, Russian and Italian version but the Polish FAQ says that the ones other than Polish will come later on.
I'm glad this game is still getting exposed every now and again. It was an amazing experience, especially back in the day. That's good work you're doing here. Thanks.
I replay Gothic 1/2 every few years, they are even better now with the system packs that enable super smooth movement of the camera (better than the originals).
When this game came out at first the graphics were top notch, what made people turn away from it was the very unusual controls and the extremely high system requirements (for the time) BUT once you got past those two "obstacles" you get a beutiful Masterpiece that only Witcher 3 has come close to after 15 years.
The interesting thing is that the witcher is mostly inspired by Gothic. The polish devs are huge fans of the old Gothic games. Also CD Project used A "writing organizing program thing" made by some old piranha devs to organize and connect their tons of quests for witcher 3. So even Piranha Bytes fade away over time you can say the old spirit lives on^^
As someone from Germany I've played the game back when it was first released. I never understood why it didn't get more recognition internationally. The graphics might not have aged well, but it was great for the time. And the mechanics were ahead of its time and some even better than some modern games.
I love how RPGs released much later than this title, learned and implemented so many of the features of this game yet so few know that this series even exists. Publishers are milking their games with remakes, I would love to have a remake of this and g2 on their elex engine, but with the combat system intact just more handy. Fantastic Tribute, even if g2 is my favourite game of all time, g1 certainly has its charm in its atmosphere.
Yeah I would like a remaster of all the Gothic games for console loved Elex and it shares a lot in common with this one except for the added tech etc but I liked that part as well as you could go swords and sorcery , chemmed out mad max style , or high tech telepath/ telekinetic
I don´t know why this game was popular in Romania, but through this way I managed to play it when I was a kid and, understandably, has remained with me ever since.
Am primit partea a doua cu revista Level si de atunci am terminat partea a doua de vreo 6 ori, prima parte de 2 ori si a treia de vreo 4 ori si inca as mai juca...
Incredibly well put-together video. I recently finished my first playthrough of Gothic, and can tell that you've really paid attention to all the subtleties of the game, many of which I completely missed and had no idea about. The camera work is spot on, and your script, voice over and mic quality are also top-notch. One of the best RUclips videos I've seen for a while, if not ever. Really well done.
I was 7 when Gothic came out. I'd never seen an open-world game before. It blew my mind. I kept playing intensely for 10+ years but still never found a match to Gothic and Gothic 2.
Since its release in 2001 i play Gothic about once a year. It never gets old, its never boring. I'm somehow emotional connected to it. Gothic is truely special and unique.
sad how no one recognized this post....A salute to you Sir for making one of the best game soundtracks ever! Listening to the Gothic 1 soundtrack feels like a nostalgic journey to the prison colony!
Everyone kai here composed the soundtrack for gothic 1. Thank you kai for a great soundtrack. I have enjoyed it and this game for 20 years. I hope to enjoy it for another 20.
Wow sehr gute Arbeit!
To this day there are German, Polish and Russian modding teams that make mods. Some teams translate mods from other languages into their own and others create the mods.
I agree. I finished a playthrough on my Steam Deck one week ago; the second after 20 years. I did not forget the main storyline, but I forgot so much of the details and side quests. It was a fantastic atmosphere replaying Gothic again. Now I started Gothic 2 also on the Steam Deck: Also a fantastic game!! The only drawback: the Steam Versions do no playback full motion video sequences on the steam deck; you just hear audio, but you can skip the sequences. Since Gothic does NOT heavly rely on render sequences, it was OK for me.
I think I stumbled across this video a week or two ago while looking for a new ARPG to play. Loved the video, definitely can tell the passion you have for this game. Realized I bought the Gothic bundle on Steam like 6 years ago and only played Arcania. 47 hours of game play later and I'm about to be moving onto Gothic 2, then 3, then I'll probably give the Risen series a go. Thanks for taking the time to make this.
Ah yes.... Lefty... In the beginning... Lefty, Ricelord and his Cronies made my life a living hell.. but after leveling up and becoming stronger... I kicked their butts big time :)
@@Pokerface-tr1ds Nah what you do is save the game , enable Marvin-mode and beat the shit out of them then teleport them into ork camp and watch them fight.
@@filipstudeny Funny thing you mention this type of scenario.... because I did it 2 or 3 years ago.... was fun to watch them getting slaughtered by the Orcs there :)
Gothic 1, 2 + Add-on are some of my favorite games ever. Never even finished Gothic 3, wasn't the same game for me anymore. For anyone loving old-school amazing Rpg's this is a must play.
@@iacobescuionut2459 there is really no Boss in G3, maybe Xardas. G3 is a good game, just different, not as good as G1-2 obviously but better than so many others
I remember the first time I was ever obsessed with a game. I played Gothic 2 so much I started during the day, and time and space became so irrelevant I never noticed the night was gone and it was a new day again. Didn't seem to matter, because I was the Nameless Hero. That is what Gothic does. Pure immersion with sensible characters, landscapes, progression, and a constant desire to get better and distinguish yourself from the routine of the world. And when I finished Gothic 2 for the second time, I didn't believe there could be a game as good as it. And then I was told the first Gothic was equally good. Gothic and Gothic 2 were the games where, for the first time, I wanted my memory wiped, so I could play them again with the same gusto. And the funny thing is: they still are, imo, but as objectively as possible, the best gaming experiences the gaming world has to offer. Immersion, world-building, game mechanics and progression, interactivity, atmosphere, it is all just. perfect.
Totally agree, Gothic was such a great game and ahead of its time. I had countless hours playing it. The only complaint I had was the keybind configs, but over time you got use to them. Thanks for bringing back this great memory.
Awesome. It is hard to find good gothic perspectives espacially since durmin paradox blocked his videos, even though I think you should mention the price and the fantastic sequels,as well as Risen 1. Definetly a Like.
I played the game over 100 times and I'm still not bored and around 200 times Gothic 2 Gold. Gothic 3 is easier but not so good as those 2 and the story is lacking badly.
I love gothic series, gothic 1 and 2 are my all time favorite game :D I thought about doing a video about this game but sir you did a wonderfull job with this :D I could not do it better. Love this video OLD BUT GOLD!!
I kept saying, "Gothic. Its gotta be Gothic. Totally Gothic. Please be Gothic. OH YEAH! GOTHIC!" This is freaking great dude, very well done. Consider me subscribed ~ With notifications! Also, Gothic 3 has one of the most amazing theme songs in a game, IMHO. Look up Gothic 3 - Vista Point for anyone curios.
The only problem with Pirahna Bytes company is they never found good publishers. If they ever did found good publisher, Gothic would be still alive. I mean, The Witcher turned to be success game when they found new (popular) publisher and it'd be dead long time ago if they never did. Why Pirahna Bytes never bothered to do it? JoWooD was terrible, people tell that Gothic 3 was an unfinished buggy game and lots of it had problems. People talks how first two are better than 3rd but for me 3rd one was good especially the musics. But that's just my opinion.
Gothic 3 is an amazing game and completely justified successor to first two parts. It was JoWooD's fault that the game WAS buggy. After a large community patch came out and the game became playable and in the state it should be at its release. Gothic 1, 2 and 3 are my all time favourite RPGs.
Actually Witcher publishers were very small company and they asked Andrzej Sapkowski (creator of Witcher books) to turn book source material into a rpg game. Sapkowski sold rights for Witcher for very small amout of money (heh), and look now look how the CD Project Red evolved
Agree 100%, played the game multiple times a while back, the npc interaction is awesome, It's a tough game at first but so much fun and laughter. You just gave me the taste for another run.
Epic. Old but totally gold!
This was by far the best game ever! My 1st playthrough when i got down from the barrier, I've meet those 2 guyz that wanted ore to teach me how to skin animals, saying I'll make a frotune that way... I've spend the next 15 lvl's runing around the whole map, not even seting a foot in the old camp. I didnt even know I was standing in front of it, I never saw it xD I did the whole Tower of skeletons with a rusty sword, no sword skills. And then when I stept into to town i realized there are quest, more interactions.. AMAZING game. Gothic 2 and NoR were just as good. I would recomend this game even now. I come back to it every 2 years, thats how good it was!
I would have missed it if my dad didnt show it to all of his kids. I remember him letting me land the final blow on the crawler Queen. It was do exciting
As a 10 year old child in the UK some 15 years ago, my dad somehow brought this for PC & it became one of my childhood favorites! Still have incredibly fond memories of it to this day. First RPG I ever played...
Dem schließe ich mich an! Nachdem was ich von dir all die Jahre schon zu Gesicht kriegen durfte, inklusive dem riesen Haufen Arbeit hier, konnte ich einfach nicht anders. Ich hoffe ebenfalls, dass meine 20€ ankamen.
Top Video!
damn man, as a person who has played Gothic I & II back in the early 2000s I'm so happy to finally see this series getting more attention lately (not that much, but back in the day there were barely ANY videos about it, not even small reviews). Gothic II especially is one of my favorite games ever created, and when I played Witcher 3 my best way to characterize it was: Gothic if it were still being made today. Great video, make one for the second game aswell!
I remember installing gothic and after an hour of play I decided to leave it alone. This was my first ever RPG encounter: can't beat anything, where to go, a lot of text, a lot of walking around without really getting anywhere. And then.. After finding the CD after a year or two I decided to give it a go. Only because at the time I didn't really had anything to play with. After a few hours I found myself more and more sucked into this wonderful breathing world. I will never ever forget how amazing this game was and how it felt to play with it. It was magical. Needless to say after finishing the game I jumped into gothic 2 right away, which is still one of my favorite and most played games of all time.
Man, thank you so much for making such a great tribute to such a great game. :) I'm surprised (unless it was for the sake of not spoiling things) you didn't mention the friendship you create with the various characters around the colony, the ones you also meet later in the series as well.
Super gutes Video!
My number one rated action RPG of all time. When I started playing this I had just bought Dragon Age Origins and The Elder Scrolls Oblivion. I didn't even know this game existed and someone recommended it to me. I installed it, dropped playing both the other games I just bought and 100+ hours in Gothic. Possibly the most underrated game ever. I really wish that Piranha Bytes would make another Gothic. Also recommend 2 and 3 and even Arkania and the first Risen. The next 2 Risens were just sort of meh and now we're getting ELEX.
I have Gothic 1, 2 and 3 in my steam library, all uninstalled. Just never really felt the urge to play any, but thanks to this video I am going to start up the journey!
I lost dozens of hours over this game. I remember it VERY well. Loved the story and feel of the game. It seemed more solid than newer games. Thank you for this awesome Tribute!
Its a gem that one. Never found a game to be that emersive again. It was so good even the developers couldn't keep up. Gothic II is still good but wasn't nearly as well thought out than Gothic I and from that they've gone down hill (at least for me). Today you can feel its age here and there but it's still a favorite of mine, that I play again and again.
i can't believe i've heard of this game for so long and i had no idea it was this awesome. i should have tried it, i'm sure i'd love it. welp, i'm sold, this is going into my classic gaming pc
Thank you for this video, watching this and hearing the sound effects (nostalgia) made my day, as I played this right when it was release and this and Gothic 2 are two of the best games I've ever played (right up there with Morrowind, Oblivion, etc), it's difficult to fathom how advanced they were considering what we have today (Witcher as example). I was never able to experience the sense of accomplishment you had when you could defeat that enemy that used to destroy you. I remember to this day that there was a quest that you had to become a close quarters ring champion in one of the cities, defeating other NPCs, and it was so difficult, I spent hours trying it and finally made it and I recall I had to keep running around in circles in the ring, as he could simply two-hit-kill me. Man such memories. Only those who experienced this game in it's hayday can understand it's excellence.
Pray behavior - run away when attacked
Predator behavior - stalking instead of chasing
Here are some in depth notes of interest:
*Lurkers* appear to crave exclusively humanoid flesh, and their behavior depends on the size of their target.
Except golems (they cannot detect them?) And meat bugs (too tiny?)
*warans* are docile picky eaters and will only scavenge scavenger corpses.
Beautiful comment, thank you.
Yet another love letter to Gothic. Always warms my heart.
Thanks :)
Still playing Gothic 1+2 and Morrowind to this day!
Gothic series, Evil Island, Arcanum. Still the best RPG in the world for me.
Temple of Elemental Evil is pretty good if you haven't tried it
Did gothic come out on a console?
Creators of Witcher are always mentioning that their games were inspired by Gothic :)
Yes, great to see how the legacy lives on.
In fact I think Witcher (2 and 3) are basically evolutions of Gothic.
Where do they that?
Enjoyable none the less

is gothic three worth playing? I might pick them all up on Gog
@@yobro6053 it's not as good as g1&2, but it's a very good game IMO if you are a fan of the series. also the soundtrack is incredible. Stay away from "forsaken gods" and gothic 4 though, they are broken and rushed together games, they're not even made by piranha bytes

Phahahaha the reason i quit the game when i was like 11 and came back older
Yeah I also had to google it, but after learning controls I gotta say... I will never touch Skyrim again, I always wanted to play Gothic at least once and now I'm finally doing it, and playing it in 2021 with no nostalgia whatsoever I can say, it is a timeless masterpiece.
@@zsrlmsb2470 I always thought Skyrim was good, but incredibly overrated. It downgraded the already downgraded rpg mechanics of Oblivion and made a less varied map. It barely worked at lauch and still is full of problems. And there is very little actual choise in how you finnish the game
Can we say German engineering at its finest in this case?
I guess so :D
A shining outcome of German Polish cooperation! #strongertogether

No, the game was right at its time. It is todays game that sucks so bad.
it's too advance for today games which has no AI gaming just Graphics
@@taljune142010 Thats true... its easier to make crazy graphic game instead of finding talented people that can make good game mechanics.
@@monsterboomer8051 world building in gothic is still on top
i really miss the old gothic series ... the atmosphere, the dialogues, the music the alternative ways to play it ... so sad modern games have good graphics but really miss whats important.
IT IS THE BEST GAME EVER MADE
You know what sets it apart?
Attention to detail and the way it was made, as reading a book but actually living it.
No game gets near this level.
I love fallout but it's not even close.
Oh and fuck bethesda
Where you come from?
The game that gets you into gaming.
Absolutely.
It actaully did get me into gaming 😁 Bought gothic 1, 2 (gold edition) and 3 for 10 bucks. Didn't play gothic 3 though. Too buggy...
A.G. So true
It feels like technology got worst or something. I don't understand how this game has so many features that they can't add in today's games. It's ridiculous.
You're absolutely right.
Thats because they have made this gave with heart, passion and devotion to rpg fans.
well it's weird to me that you say this because i really enjoyed the gothic series, dungeon siege, torchlight, diablo and fable: the lost chapters and i still enjoyed fallout 4 and skyrim very much just taking each game for what it is and trying to make the best of it
I grew up with games like Gothic 1 + 2 and Morrowind and i love them even today. But I disagree with you, for me Skyrim is also a very good RPG, sure you can just rush through the main story and call it a disappointment, but there is alot more to it. In my first playthrough i had like 100 hours of gameplay without even doing 1/10 of the main story. Saying that game is not an RPG is simply not fair.
the people making this game probably slaved away for half a decade before this came out.
"Ich bin..."
"Mich interessiert nicht wer du bist."
Die ikonischsten Worte die je gesprochen wurden xD

"...eine weitere arme Sau die klar kommen muss" (Gothic3)
"Ich fühle mich, als hätte ich drei Wochen unter Steinen gelegen."
"So war es auch."
"Mein Name ist..."
"Mich interessiert dein Name nicht."
"Neu hier was?"

"Ich bin Neu hier"
,,Ein neuer Tag und nichts hat sich geändert"

It's sad that the game isn't that popular. In poland for example it's a game from our childhood and everyone knows it. even today poles are making funny fan made songs from the dialogues from the game.
Yea, that's the reason why I made this video: I want to make it more popular :D
@@MerlinPlays Im so happy you shone light on it, Im from poland and thiss game will always have a special place in my heart,
The situation is totally the same in Russia. We have rap songs compiled of Gothic dialogues with million of views. Its a cult game in Russia.
2 more importent aspects:
1. The standart graphics dont look very good compared to new games but they describe the athmosphere perfectly.
2. By learning how to use melee weapons, the animations change and become more handy.
Every attack must be timed, which becomes easier if you improve your weapon skills.

I completely agree (at least with this part in english, bc I don't know german very well yet :P ). I can't imagine Gothic with more realistic graphic and I think this is good, because it will never get old, it's just hallmarks.
I also like whole combat system in this game.

Gothic is the best game I played in all my life.
Gothic was my first action RPG and it ruined this genre for me. Pacing, meaningful choices, replayability, map design, player's place in virtual society... God, I dream I'll be able to play game like this ever again.
and for the first time too...
games made with vision, passion and love for story and depth will always always always be what we, as gamers, look for.
Gothic I and Gothic II (+ addon) are the best. Ever. I sometimes think it is the nostalgia speaking but everytime you play these games you simply realize that no other rpg combined all the mechanics to create such a lively world and great character system.
Yea, it's definetly more than just nice meories that makes this game great.
and risen 1 can relate
that is true, it is one of the VERY few games i replay every once in a while that i try different approaches and still get amused. although i gotta admit getting used to the game takes 10 hours (every single time) at best :D
to me the beginnings are always the most fun, it feels so realistic at the start, so interesting, it feels like a genuine adventure as you progress!
@Jorge LOL so true. That's one of eternal points that i loved this game. In the current RPGs you are fed by help and support. In Gothic, nobody helps. You can just open free walk around and be killed by first creature, haha.
It is without a doubt the best game ever made, too bad nobody came close to making a game this beautiful
Gothic 2, Arx Fatalis

maybe Sacred 1 nad S 2. They are also German RPGs, just a little different, not like gothic
I think that Gothic was somewhat important in making of Witcher franchise. In Poland Gothic is a big deal for gamers. Every gamer that I know personaly played Gothic and CD-Projekt was publisher of Gothic in Poland so it's clear that Gothic had some influance on their games.
Yea, I think so too. Really cool that Gothic is so popular in Poland, seems like it's even more popular there than here in Germany.
Have you heard of polish fan-made expansion for Gothic? It's called "Dzieje Khorinis" which translates to "History of Khorinis" an will be fully voice-acted. Sadly it probably won't be translated to english or any other language. It's still quite impressive tho.

I agree, this was the masterpiece. And the sound when you level up was incredibly satisfying.
When this game came out at first the graphics were top notch, what made people turn away from it was the very unusual controls and the extremely high system requirements (for the time) BUT once you got past those two "obstacles" you get a beutiful Masterpiece that only Witcher 3 has come close to after 15 years.
Exactly.
The interesting thing is that the witcher is mostly inspired by Gothic. The polish devs are huge fans of the old Gothic games. Also CD Project used A "writing organizing program thing" made by some old piranha devs to organize and connect their tons of quests for witcher 3. So even Piranha Bytes fade away over time you can say the old spirit lives on^^
Not exactly... Witcher game was inspired by book saga by Andrzej Sapkowski.
Damian K. cd red was inspired by gothic check on the internet. Sapkowski gave them Just story, the rest was up to them
"Just story" ?
Thanks! Yea, this game was an inspiration for so many develpoers.
Yeah I would like a remaster of all the Gothic games for console loved Elex and it shares a lot in common with this one except for the added tech etc but I liked that part as well as you could go swords and sorcery , chemmed out mad max style , or high tech telepath/ telekinetic
And now, 2 years later, a reimagine of Gothic 1 is actually coming!

Thanks for bringing back this great memory.

oh man, gothic 2 is my alltime favorite, more than 50 playthorughs by now i think
Jan, take a look at this. ruclips.net/video/C1KPT85NEU8/видео.html Now tell me if you still think that gothic 3 is amazing.
Soo Kratos got into the hitmen business?
Actually Witcher publishers were very small company and they asked Andrzej Sapkowski (creator of Witcher books) to turn book source material into a rpg game. Sapkowski sold rights for Witcher for very small amout of money (heh), and look now look how the CD Project Red evolved
Gothic 3 has mods, you can rework it and it's fucking great

I feel so lucky to have played both Gothic 1 and 2 as a kid when they first released.
I would have missed it if my dad didnt show it to all of his kids. I remember him letting me land the final blow on the crawler Queen. It was do exciting
Me too, i was 16 years old when the gothic 1 was just released.
Before Gothic 1 i played Blade of Darkness, for me that was the best RPG ever played.
As a 10 year old child in the UK some 15 years ago, my dad somehow brought this for PC & it became one of my childhood favorites! Still have incredibly fond memories of it to this day. First RPG I ever played...
Gothic... it was my first RPG. I fell in Love with RPG because of Gothic 1 and 2...
Same here :)

Ich hoffe ebenfalls, dass meine 20€ ankamen.
Oh starte ich da etwa ein Kampagne? Ich hoffe doch!
Sehr geile Aktion Zurkes / BeerMage
My first rol game when i was a teenager. Gothic game and music always be the best !
Top Video!
Jo, da liegst du bestimmt richtig.. Aber waren diese alten Teile schon in 3D? Das impliziere ich in "Action-RPGs as we know them today" nämlich.
damn man, as a person who has played Gothic I & II back in the early 2000s I'm so happy to finally see this series getting more attention lately (not that much, but back in the day there were barely ANY videos about it, not even small reviews).
Super Video!
Dankeschön! Jo, da hätte ich auch nichts dagegen :)
6:57 Das Klappergestell springt dich an xD
Gute Arbeit!
Dankeschön :)
You sound like you just woke up from a coma. Despite that, I like your take on this little gem of entertainment software :)
Stop using the word gem about old games its overused and cringy
@@ItzTrickshotHD Stop using the word cringy.
Since 20 years every year part of my live. Never forgotten :)
Best game ever, with no doubt... It changed my childhood, never find someone to compare to... Love it ❤
Man, thank you so much for making such a great tribute to such a great game. :)
I'm surprised (unless it was for the sake of not spoiling things) you didn't mention the friendship you create with the various characters around the colony, the ones you also meet later in the series as well.
You're welcome! That's something people can finde out themselves while playing.
Caius Cosades would like to have a word with you...
Thank you for this awesome Tribute!
ive played gothic 1 in 2005 so epic game !
