    a)you can beat up every trader and steal their whole inventory, they don't have it magically stashed away somewhere
    b)when a skill trainer teaches you, they actually describe the new or improved action you'll be doing, it's not just a +1 to a skill, they describe how the new moves work, so it feels like an actual training session

      Thats the good think about Gothic. The Creator expect you to be an Asshole time to time. You can kill people out of greed and even get paid for it. Morrowind had this features two (no in the inventory but you were able to steal traders Stuff out of their Shops. Meanwhile Oblivion and Skyrim punish you for randomly killing people as they just give you the middle finger for killing people for Loot.

    The thing is, the concept of Gothic is genuinely interesting. There's this great war against an orcish horde going on, but it's all background for why you get dropped into this situation. You're just some guy, and you never stop being just some guy, you just become a stronger, better version of yourself. You never stop being what passes for normal in this setting, never get any kind of special destiny or divine aid. I wish more fantasy games were willing to not force you to be the chosen one.

    One big advantage from having a smaller world map is, that you remember every place. I always remember "Oh yeah this hunter is right next to where I killed all those orcs". I couldn't say you anything like that about later Elder Scroll games, where I only vaguely remember special dungeons and cities.

    • @kopicat2429

      Not to mention a better quest design is possible. Like how you have the quest gives actually describe the quest location and how to get there. Instead of just a boring marker and arrow pointing the way. In this game, one has to listen to the quest givers if you actually want to know the way.

      Maps being smaller have nothing to do with maps being memorable or your ability to recall them. Per your example of Elder Scrolls, I can recall where most relevant NPCs, items, quests, and locations are in Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, and ESO in addition to irrelevant but noteworthy ones, and I do so almost entirely from associative memory formed from an initial playthrough. Don't conflate your own shortcomings with those of the game's.
      @@kopicat2429 The overwhelmingly vast majority of games confer relevant quest details through the dialogue or quest log, regardless of there being a marker or not. It's also not remotely "better" to not have them, you just happen to prefer it, there's many many reasons markers are a ubiquitous feature. Learn to differentiate between subjective preference and objective improvement.

    I loved this game. This is an epic classic, right up there with Morrowind, Bloodlines, Deus Ex, etc. Playing and exploring was a blast, reading and planning for a more epic play-through (min/maxxing or completionist mode) was just as rewarding (as you had to face insane challenges, but for awesome rewards), this game was fun for multiple plays. This is one of those games where you think "why aren't we getting more games with this much awesome in this day and age, how come such old games (with such limitations) can outshine so many modern creations?". I know that some games are just breakthrough brilliant and innovative, but we can be building on old successes instead of innovating new duds. Even remakes, like X-Com and MechAssault, are such a disappointment; why do they have to dumb-down a game, can't they remake a classic and just improve graphics and take advantage of advanced computing power, why do they have to mess with success and muck it up? I think this is why I look for indie games more, they are more likely to focus on gameplay & story over just graphics & style/gimmicks. I'd rather have substance over slick graphics any day.

    Oh, Gothic....Game that in my country have status of absouletly cult classic. And for good reasons. One thing that I personaly adore about this game is that even in very late game, with god-like gear and stats, there are still monsters that can kill you in a heartbeat if player isn't paying atenction. But if you know how to fight, you can murder preety much 99% of NPC-s and still finish the game.

      I personally still loved G3 a lot. But it was not as much a masterpiece as 1 + 2. But the biomes, the camps, the size of the world, the loose main quest... that was really nice.

    Finished it just now and it was one of those experiences that I will never forget. Despite the jank, it was very immersive and it never got boring. Been a long time since Okami where I got complete satisfaction throughout a whole game without getting tired at all, despite looking under every rock and checking every nook and cranny. The design was very fascinating.

      I was lucky to play it on a PIII 500 MHz in 800 x 600. A friend played on a 266 MHz PII and it was so bad (view distance nearly 0 to get playable FPS). Saving a game took a good 10 or so seconds and loading one was a bit over a minute. There was a demo released that featured the whole first starting area around the old camp and I played that through four or five times, knocking down everyone in the camp just to get more XP for that last level up. It was a ton of fun.

    I loved Gothic 1 & 2. It's crazy to think how the NPC and creature AI in those games, which were made by a small, obscure studio in the early 2000's, is better than most Triple-A games released today. That series was ahead of its time.
    BTW, thanks for informing me which patches to download to get this running on modern computers. Will definitely come in handy later.

I'm turnung 21 in a few weeks and it's been cool to see all these games that were around before i started gaming and before I was born. Plus the discounts are great because I get to try them myself and it helps contextualise modern games and how they have learned or forgot cool ideas.

    In Gothic 1 you'd want to knock your opponent down with a sword then finish them off with a bow/crossbow once they're back up - you'll get exp for them once more!

    • @elmariachi5133
      @elmariachi5133 4 года назад +2

      Yeah, the melee weapons knock them down first, but the piercing arrows kill them. That's also an important difference for some quests, where you better shouldn't kill some people.

    • @Katzenhaarallergie
      @Katzenhaarallergie 4 года назад +3

      yes that is a great way of getting exp, but it is also bugusing and defenitely not planned (and I personally don't like that but everyone can choose for himself ofc)

      @@Katzenhaarallergie Yes.. just like me killing Raven in G1.. I mean.. you did get the TP to Fire magicians.. going to the ore baron and Raven showing up and were able to kill him... I wish there were other options in G2.. using your save file for example who are what were alive in G1 save file and transfering to G2 gameplay.. instead Raven.. now another person was the bad guy... etc etc etc.. the choices that you made made difference in G2.. I hope we'll get something like in the future games. I hope Elex will catch up with this setup..
