- Pre-owned watch prices are kind of a difficult thing to understand. What causes stainless steel Rolex's to sell for almost double while other large brands immediately take a hit on the market? How does the original retail price of the watch effect it's pre-owned market value?
Well, Josh is definitely someone with knowledge of the process as someone who's been trading watches, new and used, for years now. He'll explain why some watches fall while others rise in the competitive pre-owned market!

I have Rolex fatigue, I can't stand to look at one let alone talk about it. I sold my sub 5 years ago & honestly I don't regret it. I hate hype & being like everyone else. Why spend 5 figures on a watch when every other jackass you meet will have the exact same one? People are followers & individuality is dead! That's why I really love unique brands A Lange Sohne, Blancpain, Breguet, Vacheron, Zenith, FP Journe, JLC, Glashutte & H Moser.
aaaaand HUBLOT :DDDD
Rolex fatigue? More like Rolex hatred. I can't stand the brand, everything it represents is toxic to me. Uninspiring, boring, blingy crap selling over retail. The endless supply of fools will ensure it keeps on going.
Blake Star zenith is criminally underrated for design and technical advances.
Agreed ! Seems like every 3rd person in a gathering is wearing one and don't get me started with their attitudes 😉
Almost every 3rd builder in London wears Rolex... I don't want to look like a builder....and you never know if is real... . Wealthy people don't wear Rolex... Wealthy people just buying what they want and don't need a waiting list.... Just the plebs making it...
The thumbnail couldn't be more wrong
The Nautilus is soooo much more expensive then the submariner, but clearly the thumbnail doesn't care
Having the Patek at $$ and Rolex at $$$ in the thumbnail doesn't exactly give off a very good first impression.
PivotShorts thank god someone point this out
Wanted to point it out too 😂
My money will be spent on Omega, Longines and Seiko-Grand Seiko, I'm sick of Rolex and all the hype around it.
I understand the brand recognition heritage and history behind Rolex. Other brands also have heritage and history :
Omega have the moon landing and a tourbillon watch
Longines the oldest valid trademark in the International Registry at WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization)
Seiko-Grand Seiko was behind the Quartz crises and have spring drive
all 3 are cheaper than Rolex and have in house movement
all the fake Rolex watches in the local market make me wounder every time I see a Rolex on someone's rest whiter its real or fake.
They're mostly genuine hereabouts but problem is there are simply too many of them walking around and believing Rolex is haute horlogerie.
The shady ADs are the problem. They never display hyped up watches and they sell those watches to whoever they want, usually VIPs or 2nd hand dealers at a premium.
Kenny Suet Rolex sells their sport watches in the backstreet alley where dealers are. That’s their real ADs.
Lolololol wrong
Josh Thanos even pawnshops have more Daytona than ADs
Why wouldn’t they?
You’re hilarious! Which dealers are doing that? I’m sure the other ADs would love to get their allocation. I’m sure you’ve reported them, right?
Another legend from Watch U Want days
Im glad rolex is so hyped up...allows me to buy better watches for less... thank you rolex fangirls and speculators!
@@arcuz7862 lol
You know you want a Rollie
He called men Rolex fan girls sounds like jealousy my books you know you want one done inside keep stacking up the bullshit watches there’s a crown on Rolex for a reason king of watches don’t get me wrong there’s more expensive ones like Patek Philippe but you can keep barking up the mountain because at the bottom is omega and all the other Brands wishing to be like a Rolex for those people people say close but no cigar it’s like buying a kit car Ferrari it’s nothing like the real thing you only live once by the Rolex and get it off your chest enjoying the rest of us from your former Rolex fan girl lol
Why the hell is the Patek Phillipp Nautilus on the thumbnail cheaper than the Rolex Submariner on the thumbnail? Is it foreshadowing watches are overpriced? Ahhh get it
One simple question sir. Why does Rolex keep advertising their sport models which they can’t supply? Is that a trickery?
100% fuckery
Obviously demand but I was waiting for an explanation on craftsmanship, complications, precision, and design, which is basically everything I love about watches, instead I got an explanation on why watch buyers are full of sheep.
Sorry booboo
Agree with a lot of the comments. Personally i'm into Grand Seiko like the Snowflake. Better finishing than a Rolex and i can buy one without sucking up to a A.D of Rolex.
Paul Smith Yes! I’m a convert. Stop that Rolex and Patek shit. I’m not a celebrities or a rapper. Lol
@@jeeefthegreat7555 Most collectors know that 99% of watches do not hold their values. It is a hobby just like buying and enjoying expensive sports cars. I personally don't want to sell any of my pieces right now & am quite happy with them. In the future, I'll pass a couple of my less desirable pieces to my daughter & nephew.
Blake Star Which watches do you own?
@@jeeefthegreat7555 doesn't matter. Never buy watches with the idea of reselling it at the back of your mind. Watches are expenses. Buy them enjoy them - end of story.
@@blakestar4100
Yes I understand that feeling...you get this emotional attachments... memories that you can't seem to let go. That's why a lot of people don't sell their watches be they expensive or cheap ones.
Economics 101 using watches
I guess the supply is just ok. The problem is that the gray market dealers are buying bulk of hype timepieces and sell them over retail.
Thank you so much for this presentation. Very informative and well done. Keep up the great work!
Excellent video Josh👍
Nice work Josh, great vid. 👍
Great video - enjoyed it. Re all the comments about Rolex hype, I don’t see much of that from Rolex for the sports models in the UK; plenty from RUclips and other media, but not directly from Rolex. Further, I see the occasional Rolex sports model on people, but very few. I guess that might be different in London, New York or Singapore, but not in Scotland.
Brilliant- Bravo my man
Excellent presentation on the current market
It's because people who buy luxury buy on emotion. Principle of substitution does not apply.
Very frustrating video!
1) Talks about basic supply and demand and how prices are set and the effect of depreciation - a generally educated person knows this mechanism, so nothing new to learn here.
2) Talks about 30% depreciation on a Rolex that now no longer applies BUT DOESN'T EXPLAIN WHY THIS IS THE CASE.
3) Talks about scarcity of Rolex leading buyers to other brands but doesn't link this back to the topic - how prices are determined - other than to say "all boats rise".
4) States that his first Swiss watch was a Panerai - WHICH IS AN ITALIAN BRAND.
Tobias Gaulke let me know where the panerai factory is my man. Thanks for watching! 😂
Great explanation without pretense. Well done!
Great video !!!
I love how the thumbnail makes it look like a Patek costs less than a Submariner lol
Exactly lol. In fact i think the nautilus is pretty exclusive to Patek customers
What’s the watch on the left?
Ray Diehl Panerai
Thank you
Oh wow! That’s me!
are you the real Josh Thanos and not an impostor? who's your life partner again?
andrewst12 you can be! 😁
best person on watch box
😁
your example rolex.. the problem is most rolex are not limited edition ie daytona, sub, gmt.. so, u didnt really answer your question
Rolex refuses to make more of their perfectly unspectacular watches so that they can increase prestige and allure.
@@Mister_Phafanapolis haha.. but it works!
Rolex rolls it's droll, haughty eyes seeing no need for limited edition, all it makes is limited.
@@samadrid6321 yup
Kind of disingenuous for him in his example to blithely say “Rolex special edition of 100...” Yes, there’s a high demand and choked supply for certain steel sports models, but Rolex, (to their credit IMO) doesn’t make special editions the way other brands do.
Panerai is not a Swiss watch, it's Italian from Firenze (Florence) (10:05)...
Hi Patrick - it has an Italian heritage, but is owned by Richemont group and manufactured in Switzerland. Check out our history video here: ruclips.net/video/OEUiQ6n7b10/видео.html

Great informative video. Bravo
Never liked the design on the Submariner . No AR too. I'd happily take the Pan over it
I like you better this way, being nice and articulate.
Enjoy!
Very well put .👍
At 4:20, who is tim?
Lots of hate, insults, and judgment in this comment section. Buy a watch because you like it, not for any other reason.
Good explanation and well presented!
Excellent Josh. Really enjoyed that
Your classroom videos are brilliant
Great video mate.
i still miss the chair, but good video, as always.
Have all 3 and still like my Explorer II the best!
This guy just explained basic micro economics...
youre welcome
Thanks to the high demands from Asia in the last 3 years!!!
Nice job Thanos! Nce! Good break down. Break it down!!!! 👍. 5711 is redic! 😳
Why are Supreme clothes sold over retail? It's always a calculation of supply and demand. I appreciate the effort, but if one does not understand that principle one won't understand a 10min video either.
After all, it all comes down to people's obsession.
I still don't get why a 2007 audemars piquete skeleton is worth more then the same watch from 2019 ? They look identical so why not buy directly from AP?
Because the waiting list from AP is several years, if you ever manage to get one at all. You want it now, you gotta pay the price.
@@yetidh9 ok thx for the answer. On the website it looks like you can just go in every store and buy one
@@Dasding619 It's the same with Rolex, Patek, and some Vacheron models. Brands such as Omega, Breitling, Panerai are available in store, or with a short waiting time because they over produce. But this means you can negotiate a discount or buy them cheaper on the grey market from places like Jomashop.
@@yetidh9 even the limited ones? There is a omega apollo 11 dropping this summer only 6969 ever made ? Will they fall in price?
@@Dasding619 Well normally Omega release the limited ones online, so you have to sign up quickly to get an allocation. But 6969 watches is far too many for a limited edition. There will be plenty of these available on the pre owned market when they are released. At first they will be over RRP because it's new, but then prices will cool. If you register your interest at an Omega shop you might get one, you never know.
dope!
Great video. Just a note, Panerai is Italian brand not Swiss. Cheers.
Wrong. Name is Italian. That’s all at this point. Thanks for watching!
Isn't China having a large affect on watch prices, especially with Rolex
China literally owns Rolex at this stage. If they were to dump the stock like they threaten with American bonds, it's game over man.
@@gmshadowtraders not sure about that since Rolex is a charitable trust...
@@franco2739 Nothing but a front. Charities are the worst agents around. I mean we do business with fukin communist China what's that then
@@gmshadowtraders you know Rolex isnt a public company right?
@@imjustlookingformydog896 I know they are total criminals. Very shady.
"Don't hate the player - hate the game"...every used watch dealer ever
It cost x dollars because people are paying x dollars or the factory has cash to burn. Other chat is bullshit.
I noticed he didn't say anything along the lines of "Don't ask me references".
😂
For a second there I thought this guy has 2 eyebrows on the left side.
Did you want to see my luxury watch
In 6 months time try saying all this again when we are in a deep depression. Premiums won’t be a term that’s used.
Well this aged like milk
hmmmmm
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Did you mean scalpers and speculators?
Miss leading thumbnail
Submariner more expensive than Nautilus? Hahahaha
