  • In a time where there's much to be outraged about, poet and organizer, Amal Kassir, questions whether her anger is the most effective tool in making change.
    Amal Kassir is a Syrian American international spoken word poet who started as a waitress at her family's restaurant in Denver, CO. She has performed in 13 countries, and over five dozen cities, including Geneva at the United Nations. She has lectured, performed poetry and taught workshops in venues ranging from orphanages to refugee camps to youth prisons to universities to city sidewalks.
    Amal designed her own undergraduate major, titled Community Programming in Social Psychology, where she has been able to create programs for a range of causes and communities, from businesses threatened by gentrification to poetry workshops for refugee students to counter-terrorism websites for the department of homeland security and she is now working on her first book.
    This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    Being sad when you see another person struggling only proves you have a strong and healthy heart. This is an important part of being a fully functional human being.

    I agree that sadness, and empathy grabs people and moves people to action - then anger moves people forward.

    • @aylbdrmadison1051
      @aylbdrmadison1051 3 года назад +2

      Yes. Anger in it's purest form is just energy to propel us to actions that prevent further harm. Our feelings, although absolutely necessary to our very survival, are not what defines us a individuals. We are defined by what we do those feelings.

    I feel your pain and try to do as much as I can in my daily life to suppress inequalities and abuse of power. We have to demand justice for the victims in the borders and in the countries that are suffering war, death, hunger, discrimination... The people in power are mainly responsible for this happening, we should demand justice. A war is not inevitable like a storm or rain, it is a decision, and decisions are taken by people who can and must be held accountable.

      @HentaiRacoon the first and simplest thing we can do as individuals is spread awareness and inform others of the oppression happening around. The more people aware, the faster we can get to raising our voices to be better heard.

    • @MGPRaleigh
      @MGPRaleigh 4 года назад +2

      I don't think you understood the talk. When you make demands that is the anger that she was speaking about, when you ask for empathy that is when people are swayed. If you want to make a positive impact then when someone talks, listen. Don't argue. Don't rant. Don't get so full of rage that you refuse to even speak with them. Learn about people like the speaker here who have stories that show the horror that is happening and ask for help to change the world instead of demanding that people do things, because when you demand things from people they fight back. When you ask for help and show them why it is needed you are much more likely to receive it.

    I totally agree with you about how many people look at middle Easter as angry people who can't hold a conversation without raising their voice, however I noticed this only happens when we deal with another middle eastern person, who doesn't allow you to talk back and doesn't care about listening to your respond back. I am an American Egyptian woman and I lived my entire adulthood here in the US, so this is coming from an experience. I can tell you now whenever I'm communicating with anyone who is not from this culture the conversation go so smooth and in a very respectful way.

      You maybe a Muslim but Syria is not just for Muslims. There are Christian's and Alawis and other religions in Syria. If you only feel for Muslims then don't look at Syria because that's not the way to "feel" for Syrians. Be human first and forget about what religion people are.
