Dynamite Kid, Kuniaki Kobayashi & Dos Caras vs. Tiger Mask, Mil Mascaras & Great Sasuke (10.10.1996)

  • That second time I went, they wanted me to wrestle in a six-man tag match - myself, Kobayashi and a Mexican wrestler, Dos Caras, against Sasuke, Sayama and Mil Mascaras. I wasn’t feeling too good on the flight over, and by the time I got to the building I knew I was very ill. I kept getting that familiar feeling of light-headedness and seeing spots in front of my eyes. I knew what was coming, just like I’d known on half a dozen previous occasions. I stood in the dressing room, trying to shake the feeling off, and saying to myself, “Tommy, just hang on lad. Get the match over and get your money.” You see, if anything had happened before the match, I knew I wouldn’t get paid. So I drank about a gallon of water and kept shaking my head, saying, “Don’t let it happen now. Please don’t let it happen now.”
All I wanted to do was to get the match over and go home. I made it to the ring, the arena was full, and I’ll be honest, the fans were cheering and clapping, like they were genuinely glad to see me, but I’m sure they must have been shocked at the way I looked. Thankfully, the other wrestlers did most of the work in that match, in fact they more or less kept to themselves in the ring. I never felt part of it, and to tell you he truth, it was just big relief when the bell rang and I could get back to the dressing room.
I was due to fly home the next day. I’d made it through the match, Sasuke had paid me, but that horrible feeling was still there in my head; something bad was definitely going to happen. I was feeling a bit down anyway, because I knew, for the first time in my life, I’d been booked for my name instead of my ability. The truth was, I didn’t have any ability at that moment. But it was still a terrible feeling. Hiroshi, the booking agent, picked me up from the hotel and we caught the train to Narita airport. I said to him, “I will check in, while you change my money from Yen to Sterling.” He disappeared. I put my case down, and that’s when it happened. I suddenly felt warm and light-headed and saw the stars in front of my eyes. I said, “Help,” but my voice sounded like it was coming from a long way away. The next thing I knew, I was in hospital, aching from head to foot. I missed three flights home because of that seizure, but I knew I’d been lucky that it hadn’t happened in the ring the night before.
I never heard from Sasuke again. Hiroshi rang a couple of times to tell me about another new promotion in Japan called Battlearts. He said, “If you bring some more wrestlers from Wigan, you could be their manager Tommy.” But for whatever reason, it never came to anything.

@kdizzle901 Unbeknownst to Dyno he was on the verge of suffering a neuromuscular seizure only hours after this match. He collapsed and seized at the airport. Wearing his old gear from when he was jacked up to 230lbs here didn't help the way he looked in the ring when he was only 175lbs and unshaven. He looked terrible here. This was his last ever appearance in a ring.

However he did his best trying quick brain buster and pile driver although he couldn't dive after that as he used to. It was really impressive Sayama requested Dynamite at first which showed their respect and friendship. Movement of others were superb. i was really surprised Sayama still could do somersault and back kick ith his fat body. Genius is genius at any age so as caras brothers. With the loss of all the muscle, injuries will surface.
I had a friend who lost a lot of muscle mass and found out he had injuries along his back. His muscle helped support his back until he lost it all.
All the bumps, injuries and steroid use created a ticking time bomb for Kid. Once his back went out, making it impossible for him to keep muscle like before, it was bound to happen.
Even though he was a horrible person outside the ring, I’m a strong believer that you can separate the art from the artist. He was Picasso in the ring and paid the ultimate price.

I think the crowd were in shock at Dynamite's appearance. If you look at any of his Japanese stuff, he always gets a huge pop, but here, there was very little, especially when he walked out. And you can tell he was in no fit state to be wrestling. He looks okay when grappling, but his movement is sluggish and his strikes and kicks really weak looking.
He had a seizure the day after this match and was confined to a wheelchair soon after. The last few years of his life were pretty horrible by all accounts. By the tine he died (at 60), he looked like he was in his 90s.

It’s quite difficult watching this knowing what I know, dynamite shouldn’t have ever had to wrestle again, wwf should’ve seen to it, the bulldogs wer a huge part of the show back when it took off and certainly helped adhere us British fans to wrestling and the wwf brand.
Out of all those vince has helped dynamite could’ve used that help so much more.
I realise it’s an older guys exhibition match but still it’s not good them still trying to entertain and risk hurting themselves even more than already had.

I never felt an overabundance of pity for Dynamite Kid.
The more and more you learn about the wrestling world of that era through accounts from other wrestlers of the time, Dynamite kind of sounded like a bully. Whether you believe in karma or not, Dynamite's fate happening to a different more upstanding person would have garnered more sympathy. People quickly forget how many lives and opportunities he may have stolen from people with his violence and sophomoric mentality towards competitors.

He walked up “from behind” to Jacques Rougeau and full forced hit him and then kicked into him- apparently because Rougeau wasn’t very popular. So Rougeau got him back (and the gloves were off after the way Dynamite did it the way he did) by either a roll of coins , but more likely brass knuckles. The Kid walked up to him, gave a real smart arse smile with his chin up in the air 😂 then Rougeau creamed him and told him he’d put him in a wheelchair if he sought revenge. He never did. You don’t do what the Kid did without karma coming back to you.

So, what caused him to shrink up so profoundly? Was it that injuries kept him from working out? Was it abruptly going off the steroids? Was it his internal health failing due to all the injuries, road time, poor diet due to diminshing income, and drugs? Or was it all of the above?

@@ethanb498 I was wondering as it was odd, even going off steroids, to deteriorate that bad. I feel like he still some definition, but he went from looking like a bodybuilder or offensive lineman to a marathon runner. You can even see a match from just two or three years prior Where he srill has a bit of muscle. I assume at this point his bad back, ankle/knee, shoulder, and elbow where in constant agony. Thus, in addition to not being able to lift consistently, he likely dealt with going of the steroids, self-medicated, and had underlying health problems from all the abuse her out his body through. Only way to explain such a massive deterioration in such a short time.

likely a combo of all, but remember, paul orndorff suffered severe damage to his right arm about the time dynamite's back went dead, and while he could still work out the rest of his body, the right arm never really recovered (it's really noticeable in his final match in wcw 2000, the right arm is WAY smaller than the other, though he could still go a bit).

No matter how he might have hurt anyone in his past, you can't help but feel sorry for Tommy here.
I'm pretty sure he'd long stopped training at this point
    (weights and wrestling).
He only accepted when offered a good amount of cash.
I believe he stopped using steroids in the early 90's, after docs warned him about his heart.
I reckon given enough time before, he could have got himself more physically prepared and closer to the Dynamite folks had been accustomed to.
A tan, a shave, adequate tights, with a few more pounds (obv natural, even if not uber ripped) and I reckon his appearance would have been a lot less "shocking".
He gave his all for the business.
If not the best, he is certainly among them!
I do hope he's at peace now.
    God bless ya, Tommy
