The word your looking for is “future proofing”. It’s when something is designed with the potential to withstand future events. In the case of Hex Bugs, the habitats were future proofed with the inclusion of attachment points for potential future additions.
Taking the "autonomous robot" line even further, I remember the Hexbug line where they made them able to be equipped for battle was SICK. It basically made them bigger and gave them slots for *customizable WEAPONS* that would jitter and spin, and so it was like you were basically equipping your own gladiator to duel another person's! You couldn't control them directly, but kid me enjoyed decking mine out with helicopter blades and "training" it to duel other kids'
The one time I got to play with Hexbugs, I was enthralled. I wanted to build a massive habitat, taller than me, with hundreds of the little things in it, like an actual full-blown insect hive. Of course, I was like 8, I didn't have that kind of money, but I looked at them on the shelves and dreamed. Went back to Lego soon after, but I actually had Lego. I only got to play with Hexbugs cos I was at a friend's house
