I use it for Drums & Vocals mainly. Not always a compressor, but a saturation or tape/tube emulation does wonders. Parallel compression is also very good on an FX bus
Good one Em, I send them too, not duplicating. It an essential procedure with lots of material I work on.
Yes indeed, Cary!
Knew about it never really used it but I will give it a try and see what it does ..good stuff fam 👌🏽🔥
You got it!!
I'm just learning and tried this on my drum bus and guitars. Sent the drums to a compression fx track and the guitars to a saturations fx track. Mixed them in to taste. It's crazy how much fuller everything sounds without getting louder! Such a cool technique!
That’s awesome!!
@ TheJustinside! Do you add Eq on your parallel track before or after?
The right parallel trick is to add eq on the parallel track
Great, thanks for the parallel comp. trick ✌️
You got it, Nils. Thanks for being here!
Excellent vid. Loved how you didn't just have a cut and dried definition on PP or it's origins. I think that duplicating the track is safer and easier to conceptualize so it's a good way to start. If it;s duplicated and one simply hates what they did then they can simply delete the track. In Reaper, instead of duplicating the track, I would use a function called "freeze track" which would insure that any preliminary processing like tuning or manual dynamic adjustments got copied as well. Dang this is hard to talk about.
Do you add compression to the original track before parallel compression (say, in guitars or vocals)? Or do you leave it uncompressed to preserve the dynamics, even if there's a wide dynamic range?
By original track are you referring to recording? If so, then yeah recording with compression is great. Always get it sounding the best on the front in. And in mixing I will add some more compression to individual elements so that all tracks “fit together”. That being said, I usually will just have the parallel compression on vocals and then a final compressor on the vocal group track in my template. Hope that helps!
@@emily_bowie It really did, thank you so much for taking the time to explain!
