This is a great method. Thank you. How wide can the treads get before I need a middle stringer?

Nigel Ryan in our area the max width is 36”. You will have to check your local codes though

How long were the boards for the stringers before you cut to give me an idea what length to buy.

Do you have a way to explain the last steps of your closed stringer tutorial? I am having issues understanding how you create the top and bottom for a flush fit to the deck. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

We subtract the thickness of the tread material on the bottom and add the thickness of the tread material to the top so everything lands flush. The top riser only affects the stringers and has nothing to do with the treads. You really need to layout one stringer so you can see it for yourself. I hope this helps you. Good luck with your stairs:)

I have a question about attaching the stairs to the deck. Is it safe to simply screw the stringer into the rim of the deck? I was looking at using some stringer hangers but I don't think they will work with the 2x12 stringers I plan to make and the 6" rim of the deck.

      Hi Paul,
We use screws to attach our stairs to the deck for the most part. If the deck allows it we try to put nails from the rim board into the stringers from behind to increase the sheer strength. The key is having a fixed landing for the stairs to land on. If the landing has movement you will be putting stress on the screws instead of relying on the strength of lamination from things being tight.
All the best with your stair building project
