MOMENTS AGO BLACKMAGIC JUST ANNOUNCED THEY LOWERED THE PRICE OF THE URSA 12K TO $5,995. That is absolute insanity and instantly makes it 40% more affordable and even more competitive.

I tend to shoot 12K 5:1 compression. Yes, you definitely need fast, high end, expensive CFAST cards. I found buying cards in tandem (identical cards) and writing to both CFAST cards at the same time avoids the skipped frames. Yep, there is a setting where you can tell it to divide up the task of writing to disk. For a clip, you will get two files - *.braw and *.braw2. Half the frames are written to one card to the *.braw files, and the other are written to the other card to the *.braw2 file.

  • @retlwiz

Most amazing to me was that it balances on that gimbal! As an Ursa Mini Pro G1 owner, this is the holy grail and I shall be selling my Ronin s2 ASAP and buying that gimbal of his. Otherwise, I still don’t really get this camera unless you want 12K for some reason. The G2 offers more dynamic range and faster frame rates at 4.6K, which I find is résolution enough. It’s also surprisingly good in low light, though it’s no Sony Fx6.

    • @billium99
      @billium99 2 года назад

One reason would be anamorphic shooting. I have a G1 as well, and while I love the images from my spherical glass, it only shoots in 3k anamorphic, under-utilizing the sensor pretty badly in the process. The 12k has a 6k anamorphic option that uses most of the sensor.

The problem for me with this camera is you can't record ProRes even at 4k, I think that excludes it from a lot of productions especially if your handing off rushes. Also the 4" screen on the new URSA's is garbage. That being said the colours out of the sensor are amazing and for the price point its incredible. Great review bud thanks very much.

Great review. I'm loving the idea of one of these. Personally I doubt I'd ever film in 12k - it's more 8k and below for 4K delivery, but with the option of recropping and for all that extra detail. The frame rates (and always using the full sensor - except for a few exceptions) and image are incredible. Shame about the lack of dual ISO - probably the biggest drawback.
Glad you like the form factor. I'd like to think I would but it's a big step up (also needs less rigging than my current shooter so is a much tidier unit)...
Thanks for the sample clips. I'll check them out in resolve and compare them to my P4K (which would be the companion camera to this - for low light, b-cam and incognito/travel)...

I totally get that bit about the ND filter getting into the shot. Same on the UMP G1. I was covering a pre-dawn raid by some activists blocking a gas power plant. It was 18ºF, so I was wearing thick gloves. After the sun rose, there were some shots with a mysterious angular thing in the shot. I thought I broke the camera, then figured out is was the ND filter. Luckily, I lost nothing by cropping and selecting alternate takes. But I learned my lesson and that has never happened since.

13:30 just so you know the pixel size has been proven a myth. When testing with a 20mp full frame camera against a 42mp full frame camera, the exposure and dynamic range were exactly the same. There’s a few videos on it but I think it might’ve been Tony Northrup that did a pretty good one. It’s not about pixel size, but about sensor size. Super 35 sensors won’t have less dynamic range just because they’re higher resolution
It’s known that full frame tends to have higher dynamic range, but it’s not due to large pixels, and larger pixels don’t change exposure.

Just a few notes on why the camera doesn't, actually, physically work. (Hi I'm Gabs, I'm an Imaging Technician and work alongside several optical engineers - something that plays a very important part in the argument). Yes hypothetically due to a crazy interpolation scheme (interpolation is part of the debayering process when a camera assumes RGB channel values for its red, green, blue and in this case white photo sites.) Which is where a sheer number of aberrations do form (aliasing issues) yes it theoretically does give an 12k output.... however it's so typical of our industry to view one figure and put everything else aside. If you can sample at 12k it does not mean your capturing 12k fidelity (227.27 lpmm!!!!). People argue digital imaging sensors are in there infancy, yes one could make that point. However another as important aspect of capture that isn't in its infancy is optics. Anyways explanations bellow. If you read it, have fun. I recently have been studying the 12k’s relatively tiny photo sites (2.2 micrometers). I have some findings that I am unsure are correct and was wondering if anyone more experienced in this field could assist.
Now my question is, with the UMP12k’s photo sites being so small. Does it make it physically impossible for light to enter them without overlapping to a certain extent making the famed resolution redundant.
Allow me to elaborate. One may question this by saying the actual wavelength of light, for example, green is around 500nm (nano-metres). This is far far smaller than that of the 2.2 micrometer photo sites. However the actual part of light we capture the ‘Airy Disk’ is substantially larger than that of the wavelength.
An airy disk is formed when light passes through the aperture/iris of the lens. As you stop down (due to diffraction) the airy disk get’s larger.
A crude example of this would be water coming out of a hose. As you put more pressure onto the end of the hose making the exit smaller the spray of water gets larger.
It is important to note an Airy Disk does not have a sharp cut-off. It has a bright central region, with additional rings around it. The bright central region is measured at about a 2.44 ratio.
To calculate the size of an airy disk one must times the ratio 2.44 x f-stop x nm of light. So using this equation far red (700nm) at F2.0 (700 x 2.0 x 2.44 = 3416nm). Now 3.4um (micro-metres) is substantially smaller than say a 7.2um (if I remember correctly) photo site of a UMP4.6k and smaller than the 8.25um photo site of an Alexa. However 3.4um is larger than a 2.2um photo site of the UMP12k.
If we did the equation again at the other end of the spectrum where the wavelength of light is significantly smaller it would be another story. However for the size of this post we shall move on.
(I will quickly note that resolution is often calculated at 550nm (Green) but for proving my point I’ll remain in far red as I commonly use tungsten fixtures, I will note as well I am unsure if the cameras spectral response curve is indeed that sensitive to this part of the spectrum, but again, hypothetical).
Now by all means airy disk’s being larger than the photo site of a camera is not uncommon say if we did the same equation above at F5.6. We then obtain an airy disk which is 9.5um. Larger than that of the Alexa.
Now Airy Disks can overlap a bit without causing a major hit to resolution. This is where MTF takes stage.
If you're interested it taking a deep dive into MTF please do so. I won’t put too much information here. However from a very basic perspective it looks at the overlapping of airy disks. Measured by putting black and white lines next to one another at different intervals.
MTF (100) is when a solid black line is next to a white with no overlap. MTF (0) is where everything is a wash of grey. Making the airy disk similar to that of the photo site puts us at MTF (74) but resolution is often calculated at MTF (50)
Now to be able to use MTF to show the point I’m making point we need to calculate the line pair per millimetre for a sensor. That is done by taking 1mm (1000um) / pixel pitch (2.2um) / 2 (line pair). The UMP12k would be 227.27 lp/mm and just for a comparison the Alexa is 60.61 lp/mm and the UMP4.6k is (I don’t remember the exact pixel pitch) around 70 put crudely.
I shall copy and paste this math to save time "The actual MTF(50) ratio is 1.971. So you could think of it as multiplying the pixel pitch by that or multiplying the Airy Disk ratio by that, but the 1.971 is just another ratio that would be multiplied by everything.
    So, f-stop of MTF(50) = 1.971 * pixel size / Airy Disk / wavelength in nm
For the Blackmagic 12K sensor at green 550nm, that puts MTF(50) at f3.2 and for the Alexa sensors that puts it at f12.1.
At red 700nm light, the Blackmagic 12K would hit MTF(50) at f2.5 Alexa would at f9.5
At violet 400nm light, the Blackmagic 12K would hit MTF(50) at f4.4 and the Alexa would at f16.7”
    (Joshua Cadmium)
Now to conclude. I want to emphasise here that this is with a PERFECT lens. Only limited by the diffraction limit! Even glass such as a Master/Supreme/Signature prime suffers from aberrations and their glass is by no means as transparent as air (attributes of a perfect lens). If I remember correctly a master prime just about gets MTF (74) at 70lp/mm. Even with a beautiful highly regarded piece of glass on a camera with such small photo sites it would surely give a considerable hit to resolution.
Does this make the 12k feature of this camera redundant? Well, that is my question.
Do let me know if I’m being a moron and miss understood my studies.
I have not proof read this either, am in quite a rush but wanted to write this.

TLDR - No optical system (even one with elements as transparent as air with almost zero optical aberrations (note some of our best designed optical systems in our world (film) doesn't come near this note Master Primes at MTF74 at 70lp/mm (which I will add is perfect for the Alexa's photo site).

    • @gabj9017
      @gabj9017 3 года назад

Now, another thing. One might ask 'Why is out resolving an optical system a bad thing?' - it's not. Your just going to suffer the serious consequences that come about with tiny, tiny photo sites (similar to that of your iPhones camera) photo sites. Small photo sites are much more easily saturated (when a photo site cannot decipher any further information) a smaller photo site is much less sensitive (note the smaller surface area) and with a lack of sensitivity from the photo site level your noise floor rises without a serious amount of internal analogue and digital noise mitigation (the last part being an assumption but that's my only theory on how each photo site giving such little voltage output would be able to be boosted without such discrepancy in gradient to others (noise)).

Plastic isn't plastic, GFRP can be stronger than aluminium depending on the level of reinforcement.
So always check the materials carefully before assuming aluminium is a better material choice.

I just plunked down for a second BM 12K. No, it is not a perfect camera. Low light lovers with dark indoor setups? Pass. Buy a FX9 or Varicam and spend a lot mo money. Those who light - the art of cinematography imo - YES, this camera can produce wonderful images, but imo it wants and needs proper exposure to shine. The sensor is amazing, but it can be noisy and moire can bite you. The body is HEAVY - but so are tiger tanks. It can drop frames, so this purchase I am going with Angelbird Pro 512s. I went with Prograde 512s on my first BM12K, and they do a fine job, but my advice is to test, test, test. Don't push your media to the redline. That extra bit of data is not worth dropped frame or dropping out of record - for me - and it will drop out if you go past what the media can sustain. BRAW rocks! As always, your mileage may vary - horses for courses.
