thank you so much for this! The game that has become life during lockdown is no longer going to be playable on my mac so I am in desperate need of figuring out how to run windows. Hopefully that even resolves the issue.
*JUNE 2020 CATALINA ADVICE* i don’t know much about this but i read up and this worked, i used a macbook pro 2018 and 2tb hdd drive from seagate and spent 2 days trying to get this to work so i thought i’d spare you all the time lol: download *wintousb 3.5 from filehorse* on the internet download the latest windows 2020 version iso from microsoft follow the instructions in the video (see other comments about hard drives not being seen by vmware). when wintousb 3.5 is at 100%, *immediately click home* (the first time i did it i waited too long and vmware shut the window) then transfer the windows support folder to the boot camp disk. shut down vmware. when you reach ‘startup disk’ it will not show ‘boot camp windows’ because the latest macs and macbooks have a t2 security chip in them which disallows booting from external media. to solve this: restart your mac by clicking apple > restart, then immediately hold down command+r to boot the mac/book into recovery mode. put in your admin password and then you’ll see ‘utilities’. go to the menu bar where it says ‘utilities’ and click on ‘startup security utility’. the setting is automatically set to ‘full security’ choose ‘no security’ and put in a firmware password if you want to make it a little more secure. also tick the box that says ‘allow booting from external media’. close the window using the red ‘x’ then go back to startup security utility. (staying in recovery mode) if the settings *are* as you changed them, then you can select ‘startup disk’, and select ‘boot camp windows’ and it will boot from that without verifying through apple. if the settings *aren’t* as you changed them (this is the problem i had) then restart your mac using ‘startup disk’ with macos, and restart in recovery mode again. this time it *should* save your startup security utility settings. your mac/macbook will now boot in windows using the external usb/hdd/ssd hopefully!! *you will need a usb mouse and keyboard to control windows until you install the drivers from boot camp*: i had an issue where if you ran the drivers from ‘setup’ as shown in the video, the installation gets hung up on ‘apple usb virtual host controller’ if you run c:\windowssupport\bootcamp\drivers\apple\bootcamp.msi instead of the normal setup.exe the installer runs well but the drivers won’t be 100% as good as macos - the @ and “ key will be swapped and the speakers sound pretty crappy (if anyone has a driver to sort this i’d much appreciate it). UPDATE: i tried through setup again after doing bootcamp.msi and it worked fine that second time.
it tells me "you can't change the startup disk to the selected disk; the bless tool was unable to set the current book disk" when i try to use the bootcamp windows. do you know what i should do?
alice souza have you tried booting it into recovery mode and starting windows up from there? make sure your external hard drive is connected, but the way i always boot into windows is through holding the option key on startup and selecting boot camp so am not sure about through startup disk :/ hope that helps somewhat
owen baker yeah, i tried through recovery mode, pressing option, everything. my external hardrive, when on the wintousb software only has one partition, so i'm thinking maybe that's the root of my problem. thing is, i have no idea how to format the drive as shown in the video (like, with an efi part and a data part)
alice souza yes just ensure you do it exactly in the video with the disk management on windows and wintousb. it should be named ‘boot camp’ like you called it so maybe the partition renamed your drive. did you use wintousb 3.5 from filehorse?
For those following this now.... Oct 2019, OS Mojave Retina 15, mid 2015 Download wintousb 3.5 You will encounter error during installation. Head back to disk management, allocate another 200MB of space, and format as fat32, name it Boot (or whatever you like, just differentiate it from Boot Camp) Go back to installation, use the NEW “boot” as efi. Vola! It should install! Try change startup disk, and you will encounter the “bless error” Reboot your Mac and hold alt. Your efi should appear. Boot into that, now you will most likely encounter a BSOD while booting for first time. From here, reset your PRAM, (Command, Option, P, R) and you should be able to boot into windows using the method i mentioned above. You are welcome!
唐展科Zhane Tang 真好!! Your comment saved my life 🤣🤣 its exactly what I need. I followed ur steps and it all work!! (Except the BSOD, I didnt get BSOD) 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿 4 thumbs 4 you
This worked for me, including the bless error. Windows just crashed the first time I tried starting it via the alt key method, but after zapping the pram it did boot. So far so good.
High Sierra tip - probably, when you re-connect your external drive it connects again into OSX and not inside of the simulated Windows. Solution: VMware Fusion - Virtual Machine menu - USB and Bluetooth - Connect EFI
When you erase the partition of the external disk on MAC (minute 3:00), open Disk Utility then select View --> All Devices because if this is not selected you might not be able to choose the Scheme GUID Partition Map. Also use WintoUSB 3.5 otherwise the latest version 5.8 it will ask you to format the partition again and you will use the EFI partition. I hope this helps :)
I think it's a new idea, with new bugs and firmware/driver consideration. USB and PCIE is becoming synonymous, and hardware matters more for bandwidth. USB-C 3.1 Gen 2, platform controller hubs between CPU and the USB port has to deal with bandwidth outside being large, and transfer power with Thunderbolt Bootcamp dual-booting, NTFS (windows) and exFAT works in both environments. Modularity w/ support behind it, standard protocols, and acknowledgement of pros/cons to particular behaviors.
Because I believe it goes against the Microsoft EULA which states that you can only install Windows on a computer's main boot drive (although I haven't actually read the EULA...). I don't think there's a technical reason why it couldn't be incorporated in BootCamp, but Apple isn't going to facilitate shady activity like that.
Marcel Obist boot camp give the option to install to any drive over 60gb, I’ve installed windows onto 128gb flash drives simply through the boot camp assistant and it’s many steps fewer than this
Worked perfectly except for a few minor issues. I installed Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit on an external hard drive. Since I am using El Capitan on my Mac I had to use VMware Fusion version 8.5. Also as someone else commented the older 3.6 version of WinToUSB needs to be used. Otherwise everything went smoothly. Kudos to 9to5Mac! To boot into Windows I had to use the Startup Manager (press the Option key while restarting) to boot into "EFI Boot"; the System Preferences Startup Disk pane only shows “Boot Camp Windows” which will NOT boot!
So guys, everyone who can't reboot using the external hard drive cause of the bless stuff problem. I found another way... When i start ur Mac just hold option, and choose the external hard drive... Hope this works for you guys, it worked for me :)
Followed the tutorial using the windows 10 May 2019 version, Windows to USB v3.5. Everything went perfectly. You only need a usb mouse for the final windows 10 setup, you can use the on-screen keyboard! Goodluck
When I get to the part at 11:41 and restart, I get a black screen upon restart that says “unable to find bootable device. Press any key to exit “ or something like that. How do I fix it?
Anupam Bharti I’ve already tried that I select the EFI Boot option (the drive that things were installed to) and then my computer freezes for about ten minutes and just restarts itself
@@JamesonTylerBynum I'm still at the Beginning of the process ( Formatting the external drive ) although reading the comments down below made me belive many people got it working using this method even on the newer mac with T2 chips ... Still there are other methods to do this .... Maybe just delete the Partition of the external drive and try it once again from the beginning would help as a last try.
@@workinonbeingsomething2129 you will have to connect your hard disk to a pc and then reconnect to your Mac . I had the same problem and now its solved.
Hi I've tried it 5 times and these are the things that made me succeed : - I have an internal Crucial SSD 240 GB card that I have put in an external case (Orico), every time the windows 10 (October 2018 version) didn't recognize my drive via VMWare, it kept connecting and disconnecting (tried to format in MacOS, NTFS, MS Dos but didn't work). Then I took the internal SSD (formatted in MacOS journalized system in GUID) and put it in a USB Docking station, connected it to windows 10 through VMware, it was recognized by windows 10, and allowed me to format it to NTFS - The WinToUSB 4.5 downloaded on the web site didn't work (it told me that Windows 10 Pro wasn't supported in trial mode, the same thing with Win 10 Home), I downloaded the 3.5 version (googled it) and it worked nicely - After installing windows 10 on my external SSD (plugged in on my USB docking station) , I updated it with all the possible windows update, then shut down windows. I took out my Crucial SSD from the docking station and put it again on my external case (Orico), booted it again on windows and it worked. Think that the windows upgrades downloaded the correct drivers for the USB Hosts.
Warning High Sierra users: High Sierra has caused a ton of changes. First you can no longer create a GUID partition with the external drive in disk utility. You will need to use terminal to reformat do this, otherwise there will be no EFI partition to work with win2usb. Second I could not get VMFusion 10 to work correctly detect the external drive. Luckily I found Fusion 8 works pretty well except drag and drop was disabled so I had to transfer the files by thumb drive.
One question, what do I have to type in the terminal to make it work, because when I want to restart to Boot Camp it says "The bless tool was unable to set the current boot disk" Thank you.
This is not true, you can create a GUID partition with the external drive in disk utility if you follow these instructions: www.magoshare.com/mac-data-erasure/how-to-format-hard-drive-under-macos-10-13-high-sierra.html
I followed this and it worked. Just to share, the stage where you boot from the USB drive for the first time can stick at the Windows Logo, Getting Ready for literally hours (over 6 in my case, I ended up leaving it going overnight.) So my advice would be don’t get impatient like I did on my first attempt, as long as the Windows spinning dots are moving just let Windows do it’s thing and it will eventually work.
@Safiullah Taufiq yes, as far as Windows is concerned it’s a normal installation. Whether they’re playable is a different matter as Macs tend not to have the greatest graphics chips or cards as they’re not really targeted at the games playing market. But yes, you can install them and with the graphic quality settings put to low or medium they are playable. Of course 1 caveat, all of this applies to the Intel based Macs only, Windows support on the new M1 Mac’s is a different kettle of fish altogether.
Tip for Mac OS High Sierra users and people that get "The bless tool failed to set the current boot disk": On the disk partition tool (when you want to format the external drive), select "Show all devices" (Show volumes only is selected by default). And then, format the *disk*, not the volume. That will give you the option to select GUID partition map, which will create an EFI partition that will allow you to boot from the disk. Then, just proceed with the instructions as usual.
For anyone trying this right now and coming up on some obstacles such as: - if your drive's partition doesn't look like a really big/extensive rectangle or named similarly to the one in the guide; - if when you attempt to delete it and then do the New Simple volume but can't find an 'unallocated' volume and none of the ones you have available show the " New Simple volume" when you right click them; - if when you do the New Simple volume step but then the drive connects disconnects and reconnects over and over; Here are some solutions you might be looking for: You need to go back to your Mac desktop, connect the disk to the mac specifically and remove any passwords you may have given the disk. Once you do this and attempt the "delete volume" step again you should see the partition rectangle is bigger/longer and named differently as soon as it shows up on screen. It should allow you to do the delete volume and new simple volume steps without problems. Is this your problem? maybe not, but it was for me so I thought I'd post it here for anyone having similar problems and looking for solutions.
It sounds similar but my problem is that it keeps saying that my device is unable to connect to its ideal host controller and then when I bypass the error message windows says USB not recognized and it can''t see it at all in the disc management screen :(
Lampshade hey hon, I’m sorry to hear that. Unfortunately I don’t know how to solve that for you, it didn’t happen to me :( If you can afford the time, you might wanna send them a question on their 9to5 webpage. They’ll def know what to do. And again, sorry I couldn’t help!
Everything worked fine up until connecting my drive to Windows. I hear the connect sound but then that is followed by multiple disconnect sounds and eventually they stop. The drive doesn't show up in Disk Management either. Any idea as to why this is?
Mine didn't show up in windows explorer but was in Disk Management although it didn't have a drive letter assigned. I set it to E and then it showed up in windows explorer.
Super step by step tutorial, it helped me a lot. Only add the error that could happen due security issue to be granted on System Preferences, Security and General tab; that stops VMWARE to run at the beginning when starting for the first time
Connect your External Hard Drive. Start VMware Fusion (ignore if already started). Go to Virtual Machine > USB & Bluetooth (Fusion 4.x and later) / USB (Fusion 3.x and earlier) > Connect . That'll work.
Update February 2020. I was able to get windows 10 home up and running on an external SSD using the November 2019 ISO file. My mac is currently running mojave. I wasn’t able to get this to work using the journaled format i had to format the external SSD to exfat format with gtp partition. Once i did this vmfusion was able to pick up the external drive and allowed me to format it then followed the steps. I was even able to use the version of wintousb thats was provided with the video. Make sure you chose gtp partition once you’re ready to create the bootable drive using wintousb. Also make sure you have a wired mouse, keyboard and a wire internet connection.
I have had the same issue but I solved it by restarting my Mac and when you hear the chime hold the option key and your drive should pop up as efi boot. Hope this helps
Greatly appreciate it. I've tried using bootcamp and had audio issues so i tried formatting my hard drive to get rid of the partition (stupid of me i know). Since then, i was unable to use bootcamp on my hard drive and it has been a nightmare. I watched this video, and was able to install windows again with no problems with most of your instructions (apple users have mojave now so i had to work around a few steps). If anyone has an external hard drive, i highly recommend this method as its the most simple i have seen to this date.
I just finished this on my MacBook Pro 2019. A few hiccups but all in all great tutorial. Here were the issues I ran into and hopefully it will prevent someone from searching around like I did. First issue, when I erased the external ssd in Mac the formatting options shown weren’t available. Under the disk utility menu click view and choose show all devices. Second was my option to boot from my ssd said I didn’t have permission to do so. Follow this tutorial is you have T2 security chip: support.apple.com/en-us/HT208198. Third was you must make sure you use wintousb version 3.5 or it won’t allow the steps to proceed. Fourth was if you are using Win 10 home, you must use the April release or Windows will begin to load then go to blue screen of death. Fifth was my boot camp setup would bomb out or lock up when running to correct drivers. (You must use USB keyboard and mouse to setup the first time). Run the boot camp.msi instead and it worked perfectly. And finally, my Windows activation would not work and kept throwing an error. Slui 4 function would not work to activate either. Do the following to activate from running cmd prompt as admin. Type slmgr.vbs /ipk . To activate online, type slmgr.vbs /ato. These extra steps got me up and running. Thanks!
I wanted to ask you something, I did everything that works on all the macs I have at home, but on my pro2019 when I start EFI BOOT it gives me an error, can it be the usb-c port's fault? thank you
UPDATE JUNE 2019 Windows 10 ISO April 2018 is no longer available When using may 2019 we run into this weird BSOD type thing when installing the bootcamp drivers to finish. Is there anyway to get the April 2018 iso? Or is there a work around for may 2019? Help! :((((
If your SSD is being recognized by VMWare (you're being asked which environment to load into) but it's not showing up in windows here is the fix: (credit to DfGuidance on reddit) - Shut the VM down - Right click the VM from VM Library (Window - > Virtual Machine Library) - Press 'Option' Key from keyboard and hold it - Choose 'Open Config File in Editor' - Add a new line with the string usb.generic.keepStreamsEnabled = "FALSE" - Save and close the file, power on the VM (Be careful that you are not using "smart quotes" in step 5 as VMware Fusion will not understand the vmx file then) I just did this and it got recognized right away.
Hey there, everything worked until restarting the system, windows isn’t booting again.. black screen with the small blinking „minus“ up on the left corner ..
I had the same problem. I just powered off the Mac. Then I put my ssd (it is an internal drive connected through usb) , where I put windows on, in one of those internal slots of my Mac Pro. After that I powered it back on and Windows setup began. This worked for me. Let me know if it worked for anybody else.
WOW! Thank you so much. I have MacBook Air 2013 and watched your other video with bootcamp and it only gave me the option to use USB, so I used this method instead and used a USB instead of an external harddrive and it still worked perfectly. I had a couple of issues but nothing I couldn’t fix myself. Really appreciate the video 👍🏻 liked.
To those who can’t see the boot camp drive after restarting the computer(or it shows “the bless tool was unable to set the current boot disk” when selecting disk) I had the same problem. But after some research I finally solved it. I found that we have to have an EFI section in our drive. I’m by no means an expert so I’ll try my best to explain. So go to disk utility. In the top left corner, tap view, show all devices. Then select whichever drive you’ll be using. Then click erase. Format will be “Mac OS extended (journaled). Scheme “GUID Partition Map). After this just follow along the tutorial. After you’re done, restart your Mac and hold down command and R. The system will go into recovery mode. Click “utilities” on the menu bar and then “startup security utility”. Then select “no security”(not sure if full security mode would work, but you can try) and “allow booting from external or removable media”. Exit the window and open it again to see if the changes are saved. If not, restart the computer and log into recovery mode again and it should do the job. Then restart your Mac and hold down option key, you should finally be able to see the boot camp drive disk. Hope this will help some of you.
Ok this is awesome, thanks Jeff!! Legit, I was debating either doing this or smaller partition on my iMac, and using my 1TB Samsung 850 Pro SSD as the external drive to run everything. I'm still not sure which way is the best but I appreciate this tutorial it helps so much!!
For those with (very) new macs that are having issues when booting: you need to start your Mac in recovery mode and access boot security settings. You need to change both! (Allow booting from external drive, obviously, but also boot security needs to be turned off (or possibly on medium, have not tried that myself yet). Then you should be able to boot from your windows drive as planned! This was driving me insane, reinstalled 3 times and then in the end it was so simple lol
Before you changed this, did you only see EFI Recovery drive on the external SSD? Because I've changed "Allow External Drive Boot" but not the security, and I can't boot from the external drive. Cheers.
@@bobacks Yes, I did, but my mac would ask for an internet connection to verify the startup disk, restart several times and then ultimately boot back into macos. Afaik this only applies to macs with the T2 chip, which is MBP 2018 and up (i think)
@@lukasengelhardt5371 Yeah, mine has a T2, it's a new Mac mini. I'll have to check out your method once home. Hope it works because I am losing sleep and hair :)

Hello everybody, thanks for this tutorial Jeff! I followed your introductions step by step but stocked on one... I got a MacBook Pro from 2016 with High Sierra and I want to copy windows on a SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD. But the SSD doesn't connects on windows. As seaabird suggested I solved the problem that my Mac asks me, where I want to connect the device. When I connect the device to windows I can hear the "connection sound" (like on 6:54), but I can´t see it under "Disk Management" and after a few seconds I hear the "disconnection sound". After that, the device reconnects and disconnects all the time... I tried both versions of windows, April and October but I still got this problem. Does anybody got a solution for this problem? Thanks in Advance, Tom
i have a problem. After 5:27 , i got a message telling 'Could not open /dev/vmmon: Broken pipe. Please make sure that the kernel module `vmmon' is loaded.'. what should I do? pls help me!
Hi, I followed your tutorial and the installation was complete. Yet the problem is that the usb drive do not show in the "startup disk". Can you please help. Thanks.
I'm getting stuck at 06:53 onwards. I'm trying to connect to a 2TB Seagate Expansion Desktop Drive via a USB-C Adaptor and working from a MacBook Air. Disk Management doesn't recognise the drive. Any ideas on how to fix? Thanks very much.
Doesn't work on Mojave. Followed every step to the letter, even paid attention to the comments that suggest to format the DRIVE and not the VOLUME, but nothing. Windows installed on the drive, pops up in macOS as NTFS drive, Parallels offers to mount it - but won't. It also won't show up in SysPref/Startup Disk. I already lowered security level in recovery boot mode and allowed booting from external drives, but nothing. Windows 10 on an external drive in Mojave just isn't meant to happen.
@@lawjunhong6982 Not on an external drive. I just split the system drive into two partitions, and voila, works like a treat. External drive, no luck ever. (On Mojave.) On my previous Hackintosh, I could just select in the BIOS to boot from another drive entirely before getting into the Apple bootloader, so there it wasn't an issue. But with the 2018 Mac mini, you're outta luck if you don't have a system drive that's large enough for both Windows and macOS. Luckily all gaming platforms (Steam, GOG, Origin, Uplay, Epic, Blizzard, ...) can install to external drives, so since I only use Windows for gaming, I can live with a small partition on the system drive for Windows and an external drive for my game libraries. But still... sucks that something so simple like Win on an external drive is made practically impossible.
This does work. However Wintousb is no longer free to use for any Windows 10 installs. You need to buy the Wintousb Pro license in order to install Windows 10 Pro.
I'm stuck at 7:09, VMWare does not recognize the external ssd drive and it doesn't appear in the Disk Management section. I tried to select "Connect Sandisk SSD Drive" from the Virtual Machine Settings, but it just keeps playing the Connection and Disconnection Sound continuously, the ssd drive doesn't appear at all, neither in the My Pc section. I have Mac OS Catalina, maybe it's a problem of Catalina? Anyone experienced the same issue?
I followed the instructions exactly but when I try changing the startup disk to my USB with WinToUSB and rebooting, I get a black screen saying "No Bootable Disk, insert disk and press any key to continue" Am I missing something?!
Got same error, just restarted computer while holding Option key and chose the Boot Camp disk to start up again. This time it works. It cycles into Windows but does another error after an automatic restart. Restart again holding Option and choosing Boot Camp again. This time Windows goes into configuration and works! Don't forget to Install the Windows Support (last step in video). Now the boot camp disk works like a charm, and no need to do the above again. FYI, running Sierra 2012 macbook pro, samsung t5 500gb ssd

I did everything, Boot Camp drive win 10 is in Startup Disk in preferences . I click on it and click restart but the Mac always restart in Mojave not in Win 10. I am running os Mojave 10.14.3 on iMac. My Boot Camp drive is Samsung 250GB SSD
Try holding the Option key at the Mac startup tone to see if your Windows 10 external drive appears. You should then be able to select and boot into it.
@Abhishek Singh shut down your mac, turn it on hold the option button and you can choose the windows disk. It was the only way for me to start windows, the first time I needed to use a usb keyboard and mouse but when i installed the bootcamp everything is working fine. The only way to switch between the iOS and windows is holding option.
Every ssd, hdd, pen etc will work. IF you don’t use VMware. There are 2 alternative and easier methods . Method 1 - install win 10 on your Macs Drive. From there instalar win 10 to the external drive via wintousb. Then go back to MacOS and delete bootcamp. Method 2 - use a pc with windows, maybe your old laptop or a friends pc to instal win 10 via wintousb.

Updates if you're using this method: 1) Use Parallels Trial to avoid external ssd drive recognition problems. The process is exactly the same as shown here. If you do end up using VM, you might need to edit your vmx file for drive recognition. communities.vmware.com/thread/627298 2) WintoUSB part remains same. 3) For Macbook Pros 2018 and newer (T2 chip enabled), you need to go to Recovery Mode(Cmd+R at startup)>Startup Utility Manager>Select "no security/allow boot from external media" combination. This would allow Windows to boot from external drive. Some external drives work on medium security; for samsung T5 you need to select "no security". 4) Perform Windows installation as shown here. If you have trouble installing bootcamp drivers (screen flickers, installation freezes etc.), you will need to perform a force installation of the bootcamp drivers. www.imore.com/how-fix-boot-camp-unsupported-computer-model-error 5) Update AMD Radeon drivers if you have a 15-inch Macbook Pro. Right-click Start>DeviceManager>DisplayAdapter>Radeon>Properties(right click)>Update driver Note: This is not true bootcamp. This is Windows to Go i.e. Windows that runs from external drives. BootCamp runs on Mac partition. You will not see the external drive on startup disk of Mac. To see it: Go to System Preferences>Security&Privacy>Privacy>FullDiskAccess>Click + to add System Preferences. I'm not sure this will allow you to boot directly by making this selection. That's because this isn't BootCamp! Pressing Option at Mac startup is probably the best way to switch operating systems.
Is it important to do all this with the exact device i want to run windows on later? Or can i just plug and play the ssd to basically whatever mac i want?

@@cRillystr Sad thing is, VMWare is aware of this and banned it. You need PARALLELS DESKTOP, which also has trial. Or you can just use a WINDOWS PC to do it.
Hi Guy, can someone help me please. the external drive not showing up on the virtual system. I don't get the open message and not under disk management. Can someone help. Thanks
When you plug in your external drive, a message should pop up asking if you want to use it with windows or OS, make sure you pick windows. Otherwise, you may have some outdated software or the version of VM you're using isn't compatible with your version of OS.
This still works perfectly by October 2019. However, there is one more thing I concern about: Since we are using the trial of VMware Fusion, is this only working within 30 days?
No, VMware is just a software for virtual machines. Once you have installed windows in your external drive you'll have it there until your drive dies. The thing that happens after 30 days is that you'll not be able to use virtual machines anymore, but cuz you already have installed everything is fine.
Oscar Aguirre but once you’ve installed everything and the VMWare fusion trial ends how are you supposed to boot windows on Mac? (So far ive had to go on VMWare fusion to boot it up)
You need to start it up again and push the option button right after you touched the on/off button, so you can choose the startup disk you want to use. In this way you can switch between windows and mac
Help. Neither my MBP 13 retina nor my MBPwTB 2018 are able to see my SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD. I've tried formatting multiple times, using both laptops, did the same procedure on both and when it's time to do delete the volume at 7:17, it just keeps making the sound when you plug the device and then it disconnects. It may be a problem with Fusion and USB 3.0 but maybe some of you had the issue and found a a workaround... I just can't seem to find any solution to this.
Try using Parallels trial instead of VMWare Fusion. I had the same problem with my SSD constantly connecting and disconnecting with VMWare, and it works fine in Parallels.

Hmmm, very odd. It's meant to work flawlessly for everyone 2013 up.... Obviously not! I've got a 2012 MBP and all I've had is trouble trying to get this to work but, long story short, the work around I discovered was to ditch the WintoUSB program all together and download a program called Rufus. Once downloaded, run it within your VMware version of Windows to install the .iso to your external device. Here's what my window looked like before installing: imgur.com/33xcLc1 Hope it helps :)
I had the same problem. This is how i fixed. Instead of restarting pc from start up disk. Try restarting normally. Hold down option as soon as you hear the start up chime. Select windows then you should be good to follow the last step. Any time your computer restarts just start up by holding option. Hope this helps

Once all fully up and running do you just uninstall VMware? (and that will remove your temporary copy of windows too)? Thanks

*JUNE 2020 CATALINA ADVICE*
i don’t know much about this but i read up and this worked, i used a macbook pro 2018 and 2tb hdd drive from seagate and spent 2 days trying to get this to work so i thought i’d spare you all the time lol:
download *wintousb 3.5 from filehorse* on the internet
download the latest windows 2020 version iso from microsoft
follow the instructions in the video (see other comments about hard drives not being seen by vmware).
when wintousb 3.5 is at 100%, *immediately click home* (the first time i did it i waited too long and vmware shut the window)
then transfer the windows support folder to the boot camp disk.
shut down vmware.
when you reach ‘startup disk’ it will not show ‘boot camp windows’ because the latest macs and macbooks have a t2 security chip in them which disallows booting from external media.
to solve this: restart your mac by clicking apple > restart, then immediately hold down command+r to boot the mac/book into recovery mode. put in your admin password and then you’ll see ‘utilities’. go to the menu bar where it says ‘utilities’ and click on ‘startup security utility’.
the setting is automatically set to ‘full security’
choose ‘no security’ and put in a firmware password if you want to make it a little more secure.
also tick the box that says ‘allow booting from external media’.
close the window using the red ‘x’
then go back to startup security utility.
(staying in recovery mode)
if the settings *are* as you changed them, then you can select ‘startup disk’, and select ‘boot camp windows’ and it will boot from that without verifying through apple.
if the settings *aren’t* as you changed them (this is the problem i had) then restart your mac using ‘startup disk’ with macos, and restart in recovery mode again. this time it *should* save your startup security utility settings.
your mac/macbook will now boot in windows using the external usb/hdd/ssd hopefully!!
*you will need a usb mouse and keyboard to control windows until you install the drivers from boot camp*:
i had an issue where if you ran the drivers from ‘setup’ as shown in the video, the installation gets hung up on ‘apple usb virtual host controller’
if you run c:\windowssupport\bootcamp\drivers\apple\bootcamp.msi instead of the normal setup.exe the installer runs well but the drivers won’t be 100% as good as macos - the @ and “ key will be swapped and the speakers sound pretty crappy (if anyone has a driver to sort this i’d much appreciate it).
UPDATE: i tried through setup again after doing bootcamp.msi and it worked fine that second time.
Thanks man. Your info helped. I am able to run on catalina finally
it tells me "you can't change the startup disk to the selected disk; the bless tool was unable to set the current book disk" when i try to use the bootcamp windows. do you know what i should do?
alice souza have you tried booting it into recovery mode and starting windows up from there? make sure your external hard drive is connected, but the way i always boot into windows is through holding the option key on startup and selecting boot camp so am not sure about through startup disk :/ hope that helps somewhat
owen baker yeah, i tried through recovery mode, pressing option, everything. my external hardrive, when on the wintousb software only has one partition, so i'm thinking maybe that's the root of my problem. thing is, i have no idea how to format the drive as shown in the video (like, with an efi part and a data part)
alice souza yes just ensure you do it exactly in the video with the disk management on windows and wintousb. it should be named ‘boot camp’ like you called it so maybe the partition renamed your drive. did you use wintousb 3.5 from filehorse?
This tutorial uses a Windows To Go workaround to install Windows 10 on an external drive, and uses the Boot Camp drivers provided by Apple. Enjoy.

For those following this now....
Oct 2019, OS Mojave
Retina 15, mid 2015
Download wintousb 3.5
You will encounter error during installation.
Head back to disk management, allocate another 200MB of space, and format as fat32, name it Boot (or whatever you like, just differentiate it from Boot Camp)
Go back to installation, use the NEW “boot” as efi. Vola! It should install!
Try change startup disk, and you will encounter the “bless error”
Reboot your Mac and hold alt. Your efi should appear. Boot into that, now you will most likely encounter a BSOD while booting for first time.
From here, reset your PRAM, (Command, Option, P, R) and you should be able to boot into windows using the method i mentioned above.

Why the hell isn't this just an option in Boot Camp!?
I think it's a new idea, with new bugs and firmware/driver consideration. USB and PCIE is becoming synonymous, and hardware matters more for bandwidth. USB-C 3.1 Gen 2, platform controller hubs between CPU and the USB port has to deal with bandwidth outside being large, and transfer power with Thunderbolt
Bootcamp dual-booting, NTFS (windows) and exFAT works in both environments.
Because bootcamp dosen't have the "create a bootable windows 10 drive"??? I'm not really sure
It is, he just did this the insanely hard way

Hi I've tried it 5 times and these are the things that made me succeed :
- I have an internal Crucial SSD 240 GB card that I have put in an external case (Orico), every time the windows 10 (October 2018 version) didn't recognize my drive via VMWare, it kept connecting and disconnecting (tried to format in MacOS, NTFS, MS Dos but didn't work). Then I took the internal SSD (formatted in MacOS journalized system in GUID) and put it in a USB Docking station, connected it to windows 10 through VMware, it was recognized by windows 10, and allowed me to format it to NTFS
- The WinToUSB 4.5 downloaded on the web site didn't work (it told me that Windows 10 Pro wasn't supported in trial mode, the same thing with Win 10 Home), I downloaded the 3.5 version (googled it) and it worked nicely
- After installing windows 10 on my external SSD (plugged in on my USB docking station) , I updated it with all the possible windows update, then shut down windows.
Thanks for your answer. I have a problem with VM10 and a Samsung T5. Will try VM8.
One question, what do I have to type in the terminal to make it work, because when I want to restart to Boot Camp it says "The bless tool was unable to set the current boot disk" Thank you.
regarding the second problem (hopefully it was the same as mine), I went to VirtualMachine > USB and Bluetooth to enable it.

Because mine is taking quite a bit and still at 0%
Lions and Tigers Gaming Nope, just a few minutes.. My advice to download your windows 10 iso file again. That file might be corrupted.
I Use Mac for web development, design, music, and the like. I use windows to Play Video Games!

Tip for Mac OS High Sierra users and people that get "The bless tool failed to set the current boot disk":
On the disk partition tool (when you want to format the external drive), select "Show all devices" (Show volumes only is selected by default). And then, format the *disk*, not the volume. That will give you the option to select GUID partition map, which will create an EFI partition that will allow you to boot from the disk.
Then, just proceed with the instructions as usual.
thanks
Wait, so you're telling I have to let it load WinToUSB again?! *Slams head on desk*

@@rboznd3742 it has a "View" name on top left corner of the disk utility window, click on it and you'll find the Show All Devices option.
Thank you for this tip. It works for me now.
For anyone trying this right now and coming up on some obstacles such as:
- if your drive's partition doesn't look like a really big/extensive rectangle or named similarly to the one in the guide;
- if when you attempt to delete it and then do the New Simple volume but can't find an 'unallocated' volume and none of
the ones you have available show the " New Simple volume" when you right click them;
- if when you do the New Simple volume step but then the drive connects disconnects and reconnects over and over;
Here are some solutions you might be looking for:
You need to go back to your Mac desktop, connect the disk to the mac specifically and remove any passwords you may have given the disk.

Thanks!

- Choose 'Open Config File in Editor'
- Add a new line with the string usb.generic.keepStreamsEnabled = "FALSE"
- Save and close the file, power on the VM

After that I powered it back on and Windows setup began. This worked for me. Let me know if it worked for anybody else.

In the Mac Pro 2010 there are four slots for your drives with a sata connector. My problem was that my ssd was connected external via usb to my mac.

Thanks in Advance,

Doesn't work on Mojave. Followed every step to the letter, even paid attention to the comments that suggest to format the DRIVE and not the VOLUME, but nothing. Windows installed on the drive, pops up in macOS as NTFS drive, Parallels offers to mount it - but won't. It also won't show up in SysPref/Startup Disk. I already lowered security level in recovery boot mode and allowed booting from external drives, but nothing. Windows 10 on an external drive in Mojave just isn't meant to happen.

Same issue.
Does it work now?

Updates if you're using this method:
1) Use Parallels Trial to avoid external ssd drive recognition problems. The process is exactly the same as shown here. If you do end up using VM, you might need to edit your vmx file for drive recognition. communities.vmware.com/thread/627298
2) WintoUSB part remains same.
If you have trouble installing bootcamp drivers (screen flickers, installation freezes etc.), you will need to perform a force installation of the bootcamp drivers. www.imore.com/how-fix-boot-camp-unsupported-computer-model-error
5) Update AMD Radeon drivers if you have a 15-inch Macbook Pro. Right-click Start>DeviceManager>DisplayAdapter>Radeon>Properties(right click)>Update driver
Note: This is not true bootcamp.
Should also work with any PC that lets you choose a device to boot into (So not on Chromebooks, but yes on pretty much anything else)
