  • Greece and the Greek Islands is a wonderful cruising destination, with many cruises starting and ending in Athens and Venice, known as Eastern Mediterranean Cruises. But when you are looking at which cruise line and itinerary to go on your Greek Islands cruise vacation, make sure you are going to the best, most beautiful and interesting islands and ports. Many only go to a few and very busy ones, skipping some of the more appealing ones. In this video I recommend the best islands and ports you should make sure your cruise goes to and what to do on your day in port, including those the cruises often call on when starting or ending in Venice. These include Athens, Katakolon, Crete, Santorini, Mykonos, Patmos, Gythion, Corfu, Kotor and Dubrovnik.
Note: I travelled as a guest of Titan Travel on their Italian Lakes and Greek Islands cruise trip before making this video. Find out more about similar trips with them at www.titantrave...

We did a trip way back in the late 1970's-early 1980's and we flew from NYC to Athens on Olympic Airlines and cruised the Greek Isles on Epirotiki Lines. It was an incredible trip. The Acropolis and Athens was an incredible journey. Thanks for posting.

I went to Athens on my first cruise and loved the Acropolis, another stop off we went to was Santorini which is a beautiful island. Olympia is a must see and is stunning. Mykonos is a lovely island and is well known for being the location for Shirley Valentine and was great to see locations from the film.

So many islands to try! I flew into Athens and visited five Greek islands by small cruise, plus Bodrum, Turkey. I much preferred Paros to Mykonos (but I'm not a night clubber or big partier). It had everything I liked about Mykonos (the architecture, shopping, etc.) with none of the crowds and noise. I also quite liked Kos, which had more of a lush, exotic, oriental feel to it, and Syros, which has the pretty little city of Ermoupolis and some beautiful beaches on the other side of the island. Kalymnos was interesting but very different and much hillier and rockier than neighboring Kos. Santorini and Crete are next on my list, along with Skopelos and Skiathos to the north.

I loved Rhodes an Delos. Then Mykonos an Crete next. Great trip on the Marco Polo back in 1999 or 2000. Can’t remember. Wonderful cruising.

WOW, this is a Great Video. Seeing all the other islands really shows the beautiful history that surrounds the larger islands. I myself have always enjoyed exploring the areas most people may not know about. We tend to just visit the large cities and forget there is more to see.

Wonderful suggestions and insights. I'm new to your channel and appreciate your knowledge of cruising. As an American who has studied and researched in Greece for 30 years, and thus only took the ferries/hydrofoils -- not a cruise per se -- I suggest one do some research prior to your trip (watch some documentaries, read some classics, and even old "guides" such as "The Greek Stones Speak") before you go. Piles of rocks, and the inept reconstruction of places (like Knossos) have many stories to tell about civilization both ancient and more recent. When I give tours to friends who even have a decent history of that region, it is still a lot to decipher.
It's also important to know that the best frecoes and finds from Akrotiri on Santorini/Thera -- which should absolutely be part of your trip to that island -- are in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. It is not to be missed. They also have the golden treasures from Mycenae among others. And you can witness Kouroi/Kore (standing and stiff male and female statues) start to move through the slight transference of weight, their "butt crack" evolution, and shorter hair into a true contrapposto. Always fun to liven up museum trips with gold and butts! True, the new Acropolis Museum is a highlight, but only for the Acropolis. Notable is also what is not there, and in the British Museum. The Elgen Marbles have a great history themselves, regardless of your philosophy of their repatriation. The Heriaklion Museum is also a must see in Crete.
Finally, remember that many of these islands are quite quiet in the winter months. It is indeed best to go in early spring or fall. Traveling with two lady friends in February to Mykonos meant we could barely get a coffee without being eyed by all the men in the few cafes/tavernas that were open. LGBTQ+ visitors will have a similar issue when traveling out of the high season. I suppose big cruises as you discuss don't even sail then, but it's good to know. Also, Samos is a wonderful island great place to embark on an excursion to Western Turkey (Ephesus...).
I'd love to be a tour guide on a Viking Ship or similar! Yassas!

I book 4 straight Greece island cruises on the NCL Epic . The Epic is must cheaper than other NCL ship. The last cruise is Transatlantic that will takes me back to the United States. I have 18 months to pay and save. NCL have change a lot. If I’m not going to get the extra perks I’m going to think about a cheaper cruise line.

Is this a very scenic cruise? Compared to maybe something like Alaska? Trying to determine if we spend the extra money on the balcony. We typically don’t use the balcony much in places like the Caribbean. Thanks!!

Think I'd not cruise and take ferries so can explore at leisure and even stay there without the pressures of having to leave the island at a certain time based on the Cruise ship. I'm looking for the Ancient Greece experience and definitely much smaller places to explore. So in Olympia the men get naked and re-enact the 100m although the women will need to leave as per the original rules from Ancient Greek games. :)
