Did a Celestyal cruise of the Greek Isles in Oct '24. It's a small, affordable line that specializes only on the Greek Isles. We were aboard the Journey, a former Holland America ship. The ship itself was very basic, but you didn't need the bells and whistles of a big ship when we got such long days in port. For example, we did an excursion that arrived by bus to Oia in Santorini around 9am (about 45 mins before the MSC and Costa masses arrived), went back to the ship via the cable car in Fira around noon (no wait), then returned to Fira around 5pm as the other 3 ships were leaving, had a leisurely dinner overlooking the caldera at sunset and did some shopping before back to the ship at 10pm or so. We left the port at midnight. I think the ship stayed in Mykonos until 2am. Celestyal has the best itineraries for late port stays when most of the cruise passengers have left and you can enjoy the ports without the crowds!

I loved my two back-to-back Holland Greek cruises. Each island is unique and wonderful. I spent 2 weeks on Mykonos earlier, which remains my favorite, with Santorini a close second. But I do so agree Santorini was a challenge. I had to stop and regroup myself often due to heights, heat, and steep walkways. But the views at the top are unmatched. The food, wine, people, and history are unmatched. Will definitely be doing another Greek island cruise with possibly an added port of Istanbul. I LOVE Greece.

Well if you take a Cruise excursion in Santorini none of the problems are an issue such as walking from the port...no cable cars..Tours always take you to areas for bathrooms. The Excursions from the ships take you to.all of the Isle, Not just 5 or 10.mins away..Our Excursion lasted 8 hrs.
Also if you cruise there in May or Sept, it is not that hot...
As far as Tendering, Excursions have the priority...
The crowds are ONLY THERE in June July Aug....I cruised there in May and it was practically empty...
To go to the Greek Isles in the Summer is insane, I would NEVER do that.

We cruised the Greek Islands in a small ship (580 passengers). In the walled city of Rhodes, we were less crowded than on larger ships. A shop owner told us that when a large ship comes in the lines for the shops is terrible.

Your review is spot on. Bravo! On our cruise we encountered a lady in a wheelchair, broken leg, looking like road burn all over her face and arms and legs...she took the donkey ride, donkey slipped, she fell....yeah, not a great way for a vacation. Just this past May another friend decided to walk up the trail, but was constantly looking out for donkey poo and having to move to the side or donkeys would have pushed her out of the way. Moral of my stories...take the cable car LOL

I enjoyed your video and much of your advice is on point. However, I wish to correct you when you stated that marble contributed to the hot environment in Santorini. It is the dark colored soil and volcanic rock that create additional heat during the summer months. Marble, on the other hand, is a heat insulator and cool to the touch even on the hottest of days. That’s why marble floors in Greek homes is used. You made a great point about accessibility on your Greek island cruise. However, you chose the three most non-accessible islands to indicate that Greek Isles as being non-accessible. In fact, many of the other 100 Greek islands are handicap accessible and one just has to do their homework as they would any trip.

We cruised Greece, Israel and Turkey last fall on the NCL Jade departing from Athens and had an absolute blast! Greece is an amazingly beautiful country. Because we cruised at the tail end of the season, we didn't have the problems with crowds that you experienced. You are spot on with the need to carry cash because many of the merchants on Santorini, Cyprus, Jerusalem, and even in Athens didn't take cards. Good walking shoes are a must! The marble pathways in Ephesus were extremely slippery and in every port there were lots of elevation changes and steep stairs.
Also, buy your tickets for the Parthenon online. We didn't do that and stood in the hot Greek sun for an hour. to buy tickets.

I cruised the Greek Isles in October 2021. Perfect weather, small crowds. My recommendation for your viewers is to go during the "shoulder" seasons. It is incredibly hot and crowded during the peak summer season, as we had been in the Med during summers previously. My Greek Isle cruise was 7 days with 6 ports! We left out of Athens and went to Crete, Rhodes, Mykonos, Santorini, Olympia (mainland Greece), and Corfu. Is was all Greece, all the time, and it was wonderful! Thanks for the video. It was fun re-living Santorini and Mykonos.

You guy's forgot to mention, the stairs up to Santorini that is the donkey trail is also the donkey bathroom, be careful where you step and if you fall, good luck.
I did the last cruise of the season in mid November one year, it was great. We were the only ship in port and all the shops were having sales to clear out the inventory. Along with the Greek food the Greek Beer and Wine was good also. I have fond memories of an outdoor cafe with a great view and a huge Sampler plate with a couple glasses of wine.
The Greek Islands are a must see part of a travel bucket list, try to do it while you are in good shape, so much walking and stairs. We were on an 11 night cruise and we only had 2 sea days, at the time we were 50 and 30 years old, even the 30 year old said a couple more sea days mixed in to rest would have been nice.

We booked our excursions with the cruise line and as far as I can recall, I believe we only had the one tendered port, Santorini. I also recall climbing the acropolis in Athens and an older lady was in a wheelchair, but, she could walk short distances with help. So she did make it up using a combination of the two. When she would walk her wheelchair would be left and when she was resting someone from her family or group would go back to fetch the chair. Definitely, talk to your travel agent. The information I am giving you is old, almost 30 years old, but, came from our experience. There could have been a number of changes throughout all this time.

We live in Canada and went to Greece on our Honeymoon the middle of May almost 30 years ago. When we left Canada it was actually snowing which was unusual and 105 degrees F in the shade. I agree wholeheartedly with you Santorini was fantastic. We were recommended by the cruise director not to take the donkey ride on Santorini as in her words they were psychotic, but, if that was something that interested you to take it on Rhodes which is what we did. The donkeys on Santorini actually went down where the cable cars went. We had a week on Rhodes as well as 2 2 day cruises. Besides Santorini and Rhodes we saw Ephesus in Turkey, Mykonos, Crete, Patmos and Athens. The only change we would make would be to spend the week on Crete instead of Rhodes. As hot as it was the Greeks were complaining in May the hotel in Rhodes refused to turn the A/C on and just told everyone to open their patio/balcony doors. Only one problem with that solution is they did not believe in screens, which we were also warned about. So if you forgot or ignored the advice you woke up to bugs of all description sheeting your walls. The other comment about Rhodes is that the chef could not cook. Everything that should have been cold was lukewarm at best and what should have been piping hot such as fried or scrambled eggs were also lukewarm at best.

My first backpacking trip was in 1992 to the Greek Islands. I fell in love with Santorini. And have spent 6 birthdays there. It's so crowded and expensive now. Last trip 2018, I left and island hopped. I'm doing a cruise there in September, and 3 b2b's there in Sept 2024. Never thought I would go via cruise ship!...but it's easier now...I've aged some 😅...renting a car and going to surprise my friend there, and in Kusadasi also. Spent a lot if time in Turkey. Other than Paris, this is my favorite places to go!

Just got back from a med cruise. I informed my friend she must not be mobility challenged. I told her Europe is not a good choice for mobility challenged people. For a year before the trip she insisted she was walking and building endurance. She lied. She never walked to build endurance. When I met her at the airport she had a cane and could barely make it to the gate without huffing and puffing. Moral of the story is, do not travel with liars, they will ruin your trip. If you need a scooter or a cane or walker, DO NOT try this trip. I am going back without the liar so I can see more.

So sorry to hear! We completely understand the limitations are so frustrating for all but especially when someone lies to you about their ability.
We wish Europe had more accessibility throughout but also understand the history makes it difficult.

Thank you for the heads up. I just don't understand why anyone would lie about having limited mobility. Just plain silly. A few years ago we went to the zoo with some friends. The husband couldn't walk back to the parking lot to the car. I love walking and will definitely prep before my cruise next year.😊

Love visiting Greece, been many times, but suggest avoiding July/August. It’s very busy, especially August as all the Greeks from the mainland head out to the islands for their holiday, plus all the foreign visitors. It’s also very hot, often around 100f.

We are thinking of Greece. Enjoyed your commentary. We've done two Viking River cruises (Danube and Rhine) and just finished a Viking Ocean cruise (London to Bergen (Midnight Sun)) which have all been great. We definitely want to avoid the masses and are partial to Viking which is the only line we've used. Want to avoid the heat and crowds. Is the "shoulder season" good for Greece? We're not beach people. Enjoy history and meeting people more. The Viking Norway trip we just finished was "over the top".

Santorini is so beautiful, but it is a lot of work to enjoy it. We were the 7th tender and it took us over an hour to get up the cable cars. We enjoyed about 3 hours in Fira and it was time to go back down. The cable car line was so long that we walked the donkey stairs. It wouldn't say it was horrible, but it definitely isn't ideal. Overall, the beauty of Santorini outweighs the hassle.
You are correct when you say excursions aren't needed to enjoy the islands. Do some research, save the money and enjoy the islands on your own.
