It was revolutionary for its time. The story is depressing. I didn't understand how sad it was until I got older. I wouldn't really expect to like it, but worth a watch I think.

The Godfather is a great movie...... but there is a subplot where Michael goes to - I think - Sicily, somewhere in Italy, and it is almost completely pointless. There could be the argument that it is "character development," but there was already a solid sense of Michael's character. When a movie reaches 3 hours, it better be sure that every scene matters, but that Italy subplot could have been 5 minutes or less. Anyway, Marlon Brando gives an impressive performance, especially since he didn't want to rehearse, so is just reading cue cards off-screen the whole time - but they hid it perfectly! The Godfather Part Two is really good. Although, there is a jarring character replacement because one of the actors had a pay dispute, so they just replaced him with some guy that the movie pretended had been there since the first movie, which was certainly confusing at first. Also, half - maybe more than half - of the movie is just a prequel story; it's probably the strongest part due to Robert De Niro's performance, yet it is a little clunky, as in, it doesn't quite gel with the present day plot. They were going for some sort of parallel narrative, but I don't know, could've been better polished. I haven't seen Part Three since it is infamously considered bad. Also, a re-release of the movie changed the title into one that spoiled a massive character fate, so, yeah...
