I never ever comment on videos on RUclips. But I had to on yours. I just want to say thankyou so much for your informative videos I thought my qualcast was fit for the bin until I done everything you said to do in your videos and you have managed to save mine now she is running perfectly again. Thankyou so much mate.

Good craftsmanship in the video, and appreciated the tip about using a pry tool (gently) to lift the flywheel.
As a suggestion, you should include use of a flywheel puller tool-- at least to show how it should be done. For those with a flywheel which resists removal, that will be useful.

Sometimes the flywheel will pop nice and easy . Good job Paul runs like a charm.

This answered my question about a hard to start briggs with kickback. I was thinking it was a broken compression release but that wouldn’t explain the kickback too. Thanks mate.

Hi, MM. I stumbled upon your video and, boy, I'm glad I did! My neighbor hit a pipe sticking up out of the ground (property marker) and after that his mower ran like crap and vibrated like crazy. Well, he figured he bent the shaft and that it would cost too much to repair ($450) so he went out and bought a new mower, same brand but newer model, so after watching your video I asked him if I could have it for parts and he said yes. I immediately went to work on the flywheel removal and, sure enough, the flywheel key was cracked, just like the one in your video. Cost three bucks and now I'm the proud owner of a 2018 Honda GVC160 lawn mower. Thank you for a great video!

My lawnmower nearly broke my hand, the back pull was so strong. It's a Champion 40 R484. Your video was fantastic and kept the misses happy as previously I had said I haven't a clue how to fix/repair them. I've got the nut off, I just need to get the flywheel off now. Hopefully I'll get that far tomorrow. Where do you buy replacement keys from? I've been all over the net without success. Help??!!

@@MowerMan I got the flywheel off eventually. It took me two day and I was sooo tempted to give it laldy, but didn't. A gentle tap on the side while lifting was perfect. Off it came. When I finally got the flywheel off the pin was intact!!! 3 days work(in between computer work from home, tea and head scratching) in total....so far. Back to the drawing board. Everything back on. Praying it would work. No! When you pull the string the cord slips constantly. Everything else is fine. Any tips? Pretty please? I'm tearing my hair out in frustration.

Please help. Own the SP470 with a B&S Quattro engine. It's old but it was still running well until it cut-out recently after 10 mins use. Takes a lot of effort to get it running now.
Gave it a full service - no change. Checked the brake and cut-out device - working fine. Checked compression - again fine. Replaced the carburettor and flushed the fuel tank - still no joy. Removed the cylinder head and cleaned off all the soot - no change. Went to replace the flywheel key, but I cannot get the flywheel off.
The key itself doesn't look sheared, and there's no play in the movement between the shaft and blade (which is also new). Tried various things to pop the flywheel off, including using a 6" three leg gear puller, but nothing would budge. I'm loathed to spend £20 on the genuine flywheel puller, and my worry is the holes for the puller kit don't appear to be threaded. M5 bolts are too big to fit in the holes, and M4 bolts don't grab on to anything.
Any suggestions welcome as to what I'm doing wrong / how I can get the flywheel off. Any ideas?

Removing the flywheel you just put the bolt back on til it’s flush with the top and then give it a good whack with a hammer and it pops right off.

  • @risalangdon9883

Have a question?? When trying to remove the bolt from the flywheel cup, are you going to the right???
I know it's supposed to be lefty loosey,, righty tighty.
If you just Google the question, it states to the left.
However, after watching several videos, it seems like it's being turned to the right?? Nobody is specifying the direction. And with my bolt being rusted, definitely want to make sure I'm turning the correct direction.
I really don't want to have to haul my mower to the garage I use for my vehicle. (Major pain and don't have anyone to help lift it into the vehicle).
I'd greatly appreciate your response and help 🙏.

Hi, I was looking for some advice, I have removed the flysheet and crankshaft key from my mountfield sp470 after ordering the new crosshatch key from DIY spare parts, but it doesn't seem to be the correct part, after searching for the part online it came up with a Woodruff Key 4 X 6.5 D=16 but doesn't seem to fit, would you happen to know or have a link to the the correct part for me
