    Thanks for the video - very helpful!! A couple thoughts: thread the flywheel nut partway back on and tap on the nut. Also tie back the stopping bail so it doesn't bear on the flywheel.

  • @peterpanpixyland
    @peterpanpixyland 6 лет назад +17

    Hey thanks. The tapping worked well for me. I do know that tapping on a magnet weakens it (well at least that's according to my HS physics teacher), but it gets the job done. Also, instead of clamping the flywheel to hold it in place, Stuffing a 2x4 through the grass outlet and up against the blade worked well. And check you're socket sets before you start! That nut is at least 7/8" if not 1"

    • @docham
      @docham 4 года назад +1

      My Briggs had a 15/16" nut. Be sure you buy a deep socket.

    • @bobgreene2892
      @bobgreene2892 3 года назад

      @@docham HOW TO AVOID BUYING A DEEP SOCKET FOR A ONE-TIME JOB--
      If your 15./16-inch socket is a standard length, for a 1/2-inch drive, simply attach a 1/2 to 3/8-inch drive adapter, and use a standard 3/8-inch drive wrench, instead. In other words, the adapter, itself, contributes enough length to avoid having to buy a 15/16 deep socket simply to clear the pull-off cup.

      I take a 4x4 block of wood put it under the blade and pull the spark plug wire off and take a half inch breaker bar or a regular 3/8 ratchet and then I loosen the bolt. Because those vise grips can slip off crack or Bust the aluminum flywheel or bust one of the fins off of it.. I have a Toro Personal Pace mower. It was a gift or I would have never gotten it. Toro decided they needed to create a mower that uses a PTO with a belt to turn the blade. This means blocking the blade won’t stop the shaft from turning. They also made the fan blade section out of plastic.
    I was a bit nervous about even clamping the Vise Grips on it due to the plastic bit, but I soaked the nut with PB Blaster and let it sit for a while, clamped it and gave it a crank with my breaker bar. It came loose like butter!
    I wouldn’t want to clamp down on that plastic too often so I need to make certain I get all the repairs done in one removal. Thanks for the video!

    This video encouraged me to get off my butt and work on an old lawnmower I bought with the intention of fixing up and selling. I was pretty much stumped when it came to removing the flywheel, and I didn't really want to buy a tool, and it would be discouraging to have to wait more time to work on it. So I used the penetrating oil tip, hit lightly on the end of the crank, and pryed up on the flywheel. It took a bit, but it did move and came off!

  • @netdoctor1

    Nice idea on the Vise Grips. I'll have to try that sometime when I don't have the Harbor Freight Electric Impact available (which is a VERY good $39 investment for just such a purpose.) That is a rare boxed end wrench to have that much angle. I'm guessing most people would use 3/8"- or 1/2"-drive ratchet and socket.
    Regarding flywheel extraction: I would endorse this methodology. He didn't hit anything hard enough to damage it.
    More stubborn extraction may force the use of pry bars or pullers. Protect those threads, perhaps add the nut to it. Don't pry hard enough to break the aluminum flywheel.
    Thanks for sharing your ideas here.

    I use 2 large screwdrivers to hold the flywheel and output shaft to its highest position, start the nut back on the crank, then one sharp blow removes it. No need to hammer on the flywheel. You could see in this video when he taps up on the flywheel the amount of end play on the output shaft. That tiny bit gives you the ability to tap down on the output shaft to release the flywheel. You can do the same thing with the screwdrivers but use an air hammer instead.

    • @robertm8204
      @robertm8204 6 лет назад

      Deucealive75, Correct! Because the flywheel is NOT in contact with the upper crankcase bearing, tapping the shaft down without lifting the flywheel up to the top of the shaft end play does NOTHING but impact the lower crankshaft main bearing! Any mechanic watching this video cringes at the lack of experience proudly showing others the WRONG way to remove engine flywheels. This video is a dangerous, embarrasing joke. Take it down!

      Found out the B&S puller kit has self taping bolts. As the flywheel key seems to be fine and there's no play in it, I'm just going to leave it alone. No point in spending more money on tools.
      If the key ever breaks, I imagine there will be enough play between the flywheel and shaft to allow removal by the hammer and pry bar method.

    1st: to lock up the flywheel pull the spark plug and insert nylon rope (pull string rope) as much as you can fit. This will stop the piston without causing damage. 2nd: pulling the flywheel without a puller. Put the bolt or nut back on the crank. Apply pressure with a crow bar under the flywheel as close to center as possible then with one swift swing of a heavy hammer to the top of the crank straight down in combination with the pressure from below the vibration will free the flywheel

      You don't need to do that, you can insert a 2x4 between the blade and mower frame if uncomfortable with my method. Thanks for watching!

    Hi. I have an old kirby tecumseh 2 stoke motor and I have LITERALLY tried everything there is to get the flywheel off, from heat, to soaking the shaft in brake fluid and I've even tried heat, and the puller and hammering at the same time, but nothing has worked. Do you have anything else to suggest?
    Thanks.

  • @martystevens3969
    @martystevens3969 7 лет назад +1

    Use Clothesline in the spark plug hole to lock the engine. Put a block of wood on top of the crank and hit the wood with a hammer. Pry up on the flywheel under the thick part while hammering on the wood. It'll pop up! A knock-off tool works also. Set magneto gap with a paper calling card.

    As a precaution against damaging the flywheel, would it make sense to put a block of wood between the hammer and the bottom of the flywheel, so that you'd be hitting the block instead of the flywheel, and so that the striking would distributed over a broader area?

    You didn't claim this is the best method, just that it does work when the instructions are followed so you don't deserve the unfair and worthless comments such as the self proclaimed mechanic that demanded it be taken down. I was very surprised to learn mild hammer taps didn't fail to pop it or cause harm by hitting the edge of the flywheel. I appreciate you sharing this interesting and valuable knowledge even though I wouldn't choose this method.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  5 лет назад

      Take the spark plug out of the hole and look inside with a flashlight to see if the piston moves up and down as you rotate the engine. If it doesn't then the connecting rod broke. Also make sure the blade isn't jammed up and the flywheel brake isn't engaged.

    An improvement to this would be to use the claw of a second hammer to pull UP on the flywheel while tapping the end of the crank. It literally makes it come off in 1-3 hits without EVER striking the flywheel at all

    How many times do you have to follow this procedure's steps before I can expect the fly wheel to come loose? Or how much time should I spend trying to make it work? I've been trying to remove the flywheel from my mower's engine for about a day with this method and it's not even close to coming off! Anybody got any ideas for me?

    • @allenkrauss8792

      my engine has an aluminum flywheel. the puller put some stress cracks in it. I used a 3/4 box wrench like a ball joint chisel. If you have an old box end wrench, you can grind it down to a two prong wedge like a ball joint chisel. check the shaft behind the flywheel, to what thickness you need.

    Just use a block of wood and block off the blade from underneath instead of taking chance of screwing up flywheel, coil or anything else if the vise grips slip. If the blade is off you can use a pipe wrench to grasp the driveshaft underneath.

    just remove spark plug and stuff some rope inside cylinder to unscrew that bolt. These flywheels crack so easily. To remove flywheel I used two crowbars to lift it.

  • @billydenham9313
    @billydenham9313 5 лет назад

    Take center nut off, then take your hammer and smack the center bolt on top a couple times. If that doesn't pop it off, then put a screw driver up under the flywheel to put upward pressure on the flywheel, then take your hammer and smack that center bolt again! Works with any mower!

    • @electronicsNmore

      If you hit the crankshaft too hard, you'll mushroom the threads, so it's better to leave the nut on to protect the threads from damage. Thanks for watching!

    • @electronicsNmore

      The hammer works fine just as long as it is done carefully. You need the shock from the hammer to loosen up the flywheel. The mallet absorbs shock, so I doubt the results will be as good.

      Take your time and keep tapping. Try penetrating oil on the spindle/flywheel. Worst case, apply heat to the spindle/threads. Do not get carried away, otherwise you can melt the top seal on the crankshaft. The seal is easy to replace if you did burn it.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  10 лет назад +1

      If you used the specially designed puller, that should not have happened. You must of used a 2 or 3 jaw puller and applied too much force and did not tap all around the flywheel. You can find a used one at a lawn mower repair shop.

    • @nickbeets1
      @nickbeets1 10 лет назад

      yup was a 2 jaw puller...all I had at the time.
      ironic thing was I turned around to get a hammer to tap it and it was at that point it went BANG and when I looked back it was in two halves :s....bad luck I guess

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  10 лет назад +1

      You could have applied a little heat to the flywheel right around the crankshaft using a propane torch while the 2 jaw puller was applied. That would have expanded the metal and allowed it to pop off. Just don't apply too much heat!
