      Halo 4 and 5 have some of my favorite ships and Covie designs in Halo. And the idea that these ships are small because of a manufacturing error is just hilarious to me, I like it when the Covenant have problems.

      I love them too. Although I do have issues with the CRS as it's presented. Supposedly it is able to carry several phantoms in its hanger bays, But the hangers are waaay too small for that. I actually wanna make a redesigned CRS model at some point to fix these issues while keeping the spirit of it intact.

      @@Dryymyeah I been interested in this one since halo 3 and 4 and the design looks Wierd for it being way scaled down like it looks not too tall to fit a phantom as in game we see it at angles but also is very slim but I love the idea of a support ship with no shields 😊

    I love how both in and out of the universe, the Zanar is literally the result of a production "oopsie". Out of Universe, 343 accidentally made the CCS too small in Halo 4's campaign, then made it a feature in Spartan Ops, while IN universe the assembly forges of the Covenant goofed up and crapped out a batch of cruisers that look like they got hit by Gru's shrink ray. It's silly but funny and I kinda like it.
    I also love the implication that Jul M'Dama basically tried to bulk out his fleet with these "pocket cruisers" because he was so broke-ass that he couldn't afford to nab enough actual cruisers. The scanners on the Infinity probably freaked out when first jumping into the Requiem system being like "Ah shit! He's got a shitton of CCS cruisers!" before looking at it for a second and being like "Oh, false alarm! It's just a bunch of CRS cruisers! Drop the frigates and let's mop up this mess!"

  • @EliteBlade46
    @EliteBlade46 9 месяцев назад +67

    So this thing is essentially a glorified dropship dropship for dropping dropships where the typical, very vulnerable, dropship would get dropped shipping troops. The Zanar to frigate ratio is pretty spooky too.

    I love how the covenant is so advanced but at the same time so completely incompetent. Their largest ship is just a scaled up CAS Carrier, and their smallest ship is just a downscaled CCS cruiser. They have no ability to innovate whatsoever.

    • @Omega4Productions
      @Omega4Productions 9 месяцев назад +9

      “Necessity is the mother of invention.” Don’t need to innovate when you’re the most technologically advanced faction by a long shot.
      At least that’s probably the mindset for the Covenant leadership. There’s also the Covenant bureaucracy that restricts innovation, as well as the fact that the Covenant don’t fully understand their own technology, so they couldn’t make meaningful innovation even if they so desired.
      This is demonstrated perfectly in First Strike. Cortana learns that Covenant ships are capable of in-atmosphere slipspace jumps, and performs one to escape certain doom, but also realises that Covenant technology’s “imitative rather than innovative” nature means they didn’t even know their own ships were capable of such a feat.
      Hell there’s a chance Regret only figures out it can be done in Halo 2 because he won’t make it to orbit and so he does it out of desperation, only to learn that his ship could always do that lol.

    • @OpticBeatz
      @OpticBeatz 6 месяцев назад

      Except that’s not true at all lamp, the assault carrier is a design that works well as a carrier so, why change it? The Zanar is a result of what are known as “mutations” in the building process of covenant ships, usually they erase these mutations and reset the forges but sometimes ships like the Zanar are useful enough and are kept. There are also several aspects of their technology that they themselves have made. Energy shielding was said to have improved from the Maugen(RCS) to the Ket(CCS), the drekar was being developed throughout the entirety of the war to combat prowlers but obviously they collapsed before it could be used, there are several weapons that were in develop even during the war, the plasma repeater to replace the rifle as a mainline weapon, and a later edition being the pulse rifle.
      That whole Cortana thing is also quite literally just because she’s an A.I, she doesn’t say any of the technology is inefficient it was calculations and that’s it, but also Let’Volir was said to have done the same maneuver before Cortana did it meaning that like their unsc counterparts most covenant commanders use normal techniques and don’t pull these wild crazy tactics.
      Also forgot to mention that literally all of their ships aren’t forerunner derived so those are innovations. Even as the covenant was winning the war they introduced a new design of ship the Kewu.

    • @PeterMuskrat6968
      @PeterMuskrat6968 5 месяцев назад

      I mean the entire point of the Covenant faction is that they are using tech they "found" on Forerunner worlds... after basically just doing some redesigning and painting they have a fleet.
      The thing that makes the Humans so great is that they actually organically discovered FTL tech and then set to work adapting Covie tech and eventually forerunner tech for their own ships.

    • @OpticBeatz
      @OpticBeatz 5 месяцев назад

      @@PeterMuskrat6968 no the sangheili had a fleet and almost a hundred colonies on their own before the war that started the covenant, this is with them forbidding the research of forerunner tech. It should be noted they had a native base of energy weaponry and anti gravity tech. If they used literal forerunner ships that were repainted just one would destroy human space.

    7:45 i think there might be an explanation for the "plasma laser" being similar to the beam rifle which fires a "particle beam," a similar contradiction. I believe what is going on is that there is a matter projectile, either solid or plasma in a firing chamber, with multiple lasers discharing into it from the back as a propelling mechanism. That was the lore for the beam rifle iirc, so id guess the plasma beam would be similar. In practice it may appear like a scaled up beam rifle, not too dissimilar to a pulse laser, but with the advantage of a hard impact weapon, which may be more effective at point defense than a regular laser which needs to heat its target to deal any damage

    The idea of Covenant ship patterns being created through "mutations" is honestly a really cool concept and makes the Covenant quite different to other scifi factions that either "grow" their ships in a fully- or semi-organic fashion, as well as being different to the inflexible religious dogma and ignorance of factions like the Imperium of Man in 40k.
    It gives the Covenant ship designs a quirk that keeps them halfway organic and halfway mechanical, at least conceptually, and lets us both have the Covenant not fully understand their own technology as well as letting them experiment and innovate in limited and not-always-successful ways.

      I totally agree and I think most of the community also does. I won't go into all the details as you should read it for yourself but there is a mass effect-halo crossover (called 'All the Stars' by BlueWay) where a upgraded Ardent Prayer (using parts from the Long Night of Solace) was able to take out Sovereign and a couple Geth ships protecting it by itself for the most part. Honestly mass effect is one of the weakest and least advanced sci-fi universes I know off that has prominent space combat (doesn't mean it's not cool though).

    The CRS is a decent little ship for the Covenant, for sure. When you think of the hulking battlecruisers and carriers, you might laugh at this tiny little thing, but you'd find your face melted soon after for sure.
    It does make me wonder about the Paris-class UNSC Savanah in Halo Reach though, and the slug-fest it got into with that SDV corvette(which was almost twice it's size, and over three times larger than the CRS). It was done for the sake of plot, maybe, but there's no way it should've lasted as long as it did in that fight.

    • @gietpudemee9155
      @gietpudemee9155 9 месяцев назад +1

      @richard-4655
      The difference between the Zanar-patterns and Ceudar-patterns probably come from their roles in a fleet.
      The Zanar-pattern seems to be more space combat focused, with features like it's hangar bay seeming more like an afterthought to make it easier to move supplies between it and it's assigned ship. It's laughable ability at holding personal (50 warriors is nothing when considering the far smaller Lich can comfortably hold 40 warriors) kinda supports it being pretty much only focused on ship to ship combat.
      The Ceudar-pattern while also serving as escorts seems to be more focused on troop deployment rather than space combat, using it's cloaking devices to essentially act as an extension of the fleets Carriers ability in deploying invasion armies. The SDVs in Reach are a prime example, sneaking beneath Reachs defenses to set up spires and pylons while also deploying the seeds for an invasion, allowing the nearly 30km long Sh'wada-pattern Supercarrier to also sneak onto the surface of Humanities best defended fortress world besides maybe Earth...

  • @sunderbans
    @sunderbans 9 месяцев назад +2

    If we had the time and tech to turn all of our ICBMs into surface to space missiles, I think we could probably knock one of those out of the sky. It would be super tricky though, since the ship could just do a slipe soace jump to get away from the missiles.

    I know there's some ambiguity about the ship at Chi Seti 4, has it been established to be a CRS? From what i know, TFoR describes it as a covenant ship a third of the Commonwealth's length, or roughly 178 m long, which the comic book and Fall of Reach movie portray it as a CCS class, over 3 times longer than the Commonwealth. Is it logical for such a small ship to absorb so much damage, or is it unusually durable for her size because of her stable mutation of a CCS nature?

    • @josesanchezrodriguez1783
      @josesanchezrodriguez1783 9 месяцев назад +2

      Memebers of 343 refer to it as a CRS so I'd take that as soft confirmation because they seem to want to avoid that topic. If you ask me, the ship at Chi Ceti 4 took less damage than it should have and if all CRSs are as weak as that one then that class isn't that good all around. A single MAC round was enough to bring down it's shields and do some hull damage, a single round from a pre-war ship which would be considered laughable by late war standards and in a single shot when other ships normally take three, surviving the nuke isn't even all that impressive because it's shields were likely active by the time it went off.

    17:56. I’ve read SoI, I don’t remember the Minister of Preparation ever saying that the Elites sided with the Flood. I think he just preyed on Tem’Bhetek’s belief that Rtas ‘Vadum was responsible for his wife’s death.
    19:07. It also further highlights just how little the Covenant truly understand the technology they reverse engineered. Their assembly vats are just reverse engineered Forerunner design seeds, which are so incredibly complex that renegade mutations are bound to happen when you don’t truly understand the technology being used.

    I know in lore that the Unrelenting was a light cruiser but am i the only one that thinks it's weird that a 300 meter long ship looks massive compared to a 535 meter long ship? In the animated full of reach movie (if this is a commonly known sizing error please let me know) I had always assumed that the Unrelenting was CSS class based on size alone and despite the fact that if it was CSS you'd assume that the Commonwealth should of been vaporized I think that the fight in the movie was fairly realistic as the covenant ship gives up one of it's advantages by going into close range, and had blue team not bordered the Unrelenting the Commonwealth would of lost anyway. I feel like the Paris has been unfairly judged like how in Halo Reach (Game) it was able to last a decent while against the larger and more advanced Ardent Prayer when it couldn't even use it's MAC (unless it did in lore as i defo don't remember it being used in game) .

      Yeah the error in that movie was that they thought the Unrelenting was a Ket-Pattern CCS, but its since been retconned to be a Zanar-Pattern.

    its alot more effort trying to justify it instead of just admitting 343 made a mistake in scaling the model

    • @gammacompanymark
      @gammacompanymark  9 месяцев назад

      That wouldn't be accurate, as the model was made for Halo 4 and wasn't a rescale.

      Yeah I didn't say they re used any model, they just scaled theirs incorrectly in game

      @@konk8429 the concept of a 300m-long cruiser was first established in Halo: First Strike in 2003. The CRS designation was first introduced in 2011's Essential Visual Guide.

      @BaconShelf yeah there's no issue with the existence of a smaller ship lol, the only issue is trying to justify why its just a tiny CCS instead of a new design

    A Covenant ship named simply ‘the Unrelenting’… this is… blasphemous, disingenuous, fake, heretical and fit for Brute’s dinner! What happen to ships names like ‘Truth and Reconciliation’, what happened to the continuity?! Lol

    • @gammacompanymark

      The Unrelenting was in the Fall of Reach book, which is actually the first book and released a month or so before Combat Evolved.
      The cooler names came later.

      @@filipgaecki5480 yeah, one has to start somewhere, can’t be born with the knowledge after all, I’m a kid and has just known Halo for half a year, and I’m not really invested in expanded content yet, that’s on me. But I also don’t hate 343 as it is now, not at all, and hasn’t imbued an emotion as strong as ‘hate’ towards anything in a long time, even when things sucked. At the most I’ll just be amazed at how frakked up it is, mild amusement.
      So I’m going to excuse myself for this once.

    Nope. Too mobile, too much point defense, too much offensive options against the nuclear triad and other launch systems.
