- 12 hit songs with time signatures that deviate from the one they start in... the beat follows the melody!
Vocals + Guitar: Tommy Novak
Vocals + Shaker: Lauren Dawes
Keys: Michael Tan
Cool format and great covers!
cool, thanks for the comment!! i’ve always found this interesting but your video definitely motivated me to make this series!
Gosh, it’s incredible how practically unnoticeable these are from just casual listening
my thoughts exactly
because 2/4 transitioning to 4/4 almost just feels like a small extension. Which, if you cover well enough with the lyrics, it feels natural for the song to have 'extended' sections. Also noticeable is the fact is that the note length remains the same (the denominator part when you write the time)
Yes especially the I have nothing omg I just noticed now
The Stranglers - Golden Brown
Blondie - Heart of Glass
Erasure - Always
Maybe Pink Floyd - Money, where the song transitions from 7/4 to 4/4
EDIT: David Bennett has two good videos about this, go check them out.
Yes! I was surprised that he didn’t include money :(
I didn't know about that Erasure song!! Nice!
Wuthering Heights - Kate Bush (chorus)
Thanks Grétar!
He's baaaack, I love you so much, please keep making videos
I never knew that kiss from a rose was 9/8 at times! I was just hearing 3/4 the whole time !
Nicely done with the visualisation. Interestingly, a couple of the 4/4 followed by 3/4 examples I always interpreted as 7/8 in my mind.
I’ve always interpreted “All You Need Is Love” as 7/4 with two 4/4 bars in the verses, 4/4 in the chorus with a 2/4 bar at the end
excelent visual interface and playing
Dream Theater: "Hold my metronome."
ha!!
Radiohead: Everything is in the right place
Dream theater "hold my Dance of eternity"
Interesting approach to the concept. Good covers.
Lots of great songs in this.
I love your covers of the songs its so cinamatic
cheers!!
The way the flute and clarinet come out of nowhere is a highlight for me :D Awesome vid!
1:53 - please tell me you did a full recording of "Kiss from a rose". It is one of my favourites!
They need to drop a full cover of that song...I kept replaying that part😭
The singing is beautiful ❤️👌🏿
There needs to be being something beyond liking and subscribing! You might have just become my favourite channel, fair play!!
Great video!
thanks for watching! actually we have done 4 episodes of this series :)
@@MichaelTanMusic nice!! I'll watch them now
It's a wonder just how much better If You Leave Me Now sounds with a singer that isn't Peter Cetera.
-Let Down by Radiohead (bonus that guitar intro is in a different time signature)
Not in the same format but still cool:
-Take Me to Church by Hozier
-Sweater Weather by the Neighborhood
Very nice work!
paranoid android also changes time signature
Wow lady what a voice
every metal song ever: hehe that's cute
AmazingGamerHD totally! although i grew up listening to Dream Theatre haha
@@MichaelTanMusic oh hello! On second thought, I think I meant tempo and not time signature hahaha. Metal songs have inconsistent tempo in a good way
It's interesting that the change of time signature is more noticeable on some tracks than others.
yea totally! that's been the exact inspiration behind this video!
OMG THE I HAVE NOTHING I just noticed it now. It's unnoticeable

Michael Tan you’re welcome 😇
They just switching they flows , rap artists do it all the time .
No but seriously these covers are amazing , you guys are talented .
Tool’s Schism has a wild time signature
I try to convert song I've written to the guitar pro computer interface, this will help A LOT!
1:04 - Thank you for not cutting to the next clip before she sang the high note.
Hmmm this was just recomended to me... its gonna blow up
On the Toto song Called Africa song it works .. it's like tripping over your own feet ... The RPM Speeds up...
Here before he blows up.
AKA Mashup Artist's Worst Nightmare
Who’s the hot dude on guitar 😍😍...and these videos are very enjoyable 👌
haha I'll tell him you thought so ;) Thanks for stopping by!
Walk me home - P!nk
I will - The Beatles (verse)
Cry baby cry - The Beatles (last chorus)
good suggestions!!
Yo you freaking read my mind... I’m a DJ and those extra beats on HEY YA kept throwing me off for when to mix out... NEVER AGAIN! 😈
haha i hadn't thought about the implications for DJs!!! Interesting! This whole thing came up for me having to chart out / arrange these songs for recordings, and noticing that heaps of the older hits had extra/missing beats to accommodate the melody!
@@MichaelTanMusic Isn't that crazy? I've been noticing more RUclips videos on "songs that add a beat" now as well... collective conscious man... it's a real thing
What tiglle of the music?
I was weary of that high note on Kiss from a Rose but DAMN did Tommy hit that!
How is it you have Jay Kay as your profile picture and you don't mention Virtual Insanity?
I nearly did, I might include it in the next one.. I've played it before and from memory there's like 2 sneaky bars of 2/4 in the second verse??
yeah they’re barely noticeable when you listen to the song normally but when you deconstruct it in your mind there are some unexpected switcheroos
@@mattd7927 crazy!
Title*
Foreigner - I Want to Know What Love Is
Kaiser Chiefs - I Predict a Riot
Armin van Buuren - This is what it Feels Like
omg Foreigner of course!! Great pick!
Re the songs such as If You Leave Me Now...without looking at the sheet music how do you know?
if you count the beats, in the irregular bar you will be unable to count the same loop (eg. 1,2,3,4) as the rest of the song. that is, the irregular bar will put you out of sync with the start (“downbeat”) of each bar.
it’s a good question but to a musician it’s very intuitive what the downbeat (counted as the “1”) of each bar sounds like.
@@MichaelTanMusic ok. I studied music theory years ago and ear training was always the most difficult for me because it sounds to me just like a continuous 1,2,3,4.
I like this. It’s the same yet different video. Will this be a new series?
Could definitely do 2 or 3 episodes but would run out pretty quickly!
Michael Tan Thanks for the response. It would be a unique music series on RUclips.
@@Kettterer thanks for the coomments. got another one in the works, we'll see how many i can think of before the audience starts driving suggestions!
Modern Man by Arcade Fire is a really good example too :)
Frequently used time signatures
3/4, 4/4, 6/8 = 99.9% of all pop songs.
I wish I could see what the video's trying to demonstrate, but I just have no idea what the beats in the graph are meant to represent in the song. Nice covers though.
The avalanches's "colours".
The song is in what i think sounds like 13/8
haven't heard that one.. i'll check it out!
This is interesting, but from the perspective of a music novice, I have no idea how the first few weren't still just in 4/4 lmao. Forgive me, for I am stupid.
how this dont have millions of views 😲
Haha well I only uploaded it an hour ago ;)
@@MichaelTanMusic this video needs to blow up for sure
Nightmare for synths programmators !
Any links for the full versions of these?
bUt HeY yA iS iN 22/8
Justin Chancellor wants to know your location.
Some of those feel more like 7/4
Does Pink Floyd's "Money" count as a song with changing time signatures?
It sorta does, I think the guitar solo is different to the rest of the song. But the weird time signature (7/4) is pretty consistent otherwise :)
Michael Tan, also the chorus “new car, caviar...” it goes to 4/4 in that bit but back to 7/4 at the end
@@roryphillips57 oh cool! Will definitely have to include it now haha.. thanks!
Question: where’s the sample videos?
Answer: coming as soon as I have time to do it! And as soon as I get some more Patreon support ;)
Michael Tan lovely
Great, but can I just say, the first few with 4/4 going to 2/4 are not really changing meter, it’s just like a split bar. Amazing video though, keep them coming
Yes but how would you notate that without using 2/4? (Or 6/4)
Well generally speaking on something like a Nashville number chart you would put a box around the number to signify that it’s a half bar
@@roryphillips57 interesting! I've never come across that before!
Take Me To Church by Hozier
Until It's Gone by Linkin Park
Mountains by Biffy Clyro
Take Me To Church!!! Of course!! Definitely going in the next episode! :) Thank you
Yoooo first comment
I don't see a difference
Difference between what and what?
Dude sounda hilaripus trying to imitate johnny cadh. Good singer but that part was really bad.
95% of listeners don't know what a time signature is.
Well hopefully they are interested enough to learn ;) although I did consider calling it "12 hit songs that have extra or missing beats"
